The main aim of this article is to show that maps with specification property have invariant distributionally scrambled sets and that this kind of scrambled set can be transferred from factor to extension under finite-to-one factor maps. This solves some open questions in the literature of the topic.
We also show how our method can be applied in practice, taking as example Poincaré map of time-periodic nonautonomous planar differential equation $$ \dot{z}=v(t,z)=(1+e^{iκt}\abs{z}^2)\z^3 -N $$ where $κ$ and $N$ are sufficiently small positive real numbers.
In this paper we consider relations between distributional chaos in a sequence with distributional chaos, w-chaos, R-T chaos, DC 3, respectively). We give a sufficient condition and prove that the distributional chaos is equivalent to the distributional chaos in a sequence under this condition. Besides, we get that distributional chaos in a sequence and w-chaos(R-T chaos, DC 3, respectively)do not imply each other. Finally, we give a new definition of chaos, named DC 2', which is similar to DC 2, and show that for any integer N > 0, f is DC 2' if and only if f^N is also DC 2'.
In this paper, we discuss the relationship between Li-Yorke chaos and distributional chaos in a sequence. We point out the set of all distributional $δ$-scramble pairs in the sequence $Q$ is a $G_δ$ set, and prove that Li-Yorke $δ$-chaos is equivalent to distributional $δ$-chaos in a sequence, a uniformly chaotic set is a distributional scramble set in some sequence and a class of transitive system implies distributional chaos in a sequence.
For continuous self-maps of compact metric spaces, we consider the notions of generic and dense chaos introduced by Lasota and Snoha and their variations for the distributional chaos, under the assumption of shadowing. We give some equivalent properties to generic uniform (distributional) chaos in terms of chains and prove their equivalence to generic (distributional) chaos under the shadowing. Several examples illustrating the main results are also given.
We explore connections among the regional proximal relation, the asymptotic relation and the distal relation for a topological dynamical system with the shadowing property, and show that if a Devaney chaotic system has the shadowing property then it is distributionally chaotic.
This paper studies distributional chaos in non-autonomous discrete systems generated by given sequences of maps in metric spaces. In the case that the metric space is compact, it is shown that a system is Li-Yorkeδ-chaotic if and only if it is distributionallyδ'-chaotic in a sequence; and three criteria of distributional δ-chaos are established, which are caused by topologically weak mixing, asymptotic average shadowing property, and some expanding condition, respectively, where δ and δ' are positive constants. In a general case, a criterion of distributional chaos in a sequence induced by a X…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of distributional chaos and the measure of chaos for random dynamical systems generated by two interval maps. We give some sufficient conditions for a zero measure of chaos and examples of chaotic systems. We demonstrate that the chaoticity of the functions that generate a system does not, in general, affect the chaoticity of the system, i.e., a chaotic system can arise from two nonchaotic functions and vice versa. Finally, we show that distributional chaos for random dynamical system is, in some sense, unstable.
We prove that the set of maps which exhibit distributional chaos of type 1 (DC1) is $C^0$-dense in the space of continuous self-maps of given any compact topological manifold (possibly with boundary).
For any continuous self-map of a compact metric space, we prove a saturation of distributionally scrambled Mycielski sets under a type of shadowing and the chain transitivity.
The main aim of the present paper is to study relations between $n$-scrambled tuples and their attraction-adherence properties with respect to various sequences of integers. This extends previous research on relations between chaos in the sense of Li and Yorke and distributional chaos with respect to a given sequence. Moreover, we construct a system which is $n$-distributionally chaotic but not $(n+1)$-chaotic.
In present paper we mainly focus on non-recurrent dynamical orbits with empty syndetic center and show that twelve different statistical structures over mixing expanding maps or transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms all have dynamical complexity in the sense of strongly distributional chaos.
The aim of the paper is to correct and improve some results concerning distributional chaos of type 3. We show that in a general compact metric space, distributional chaos of type 3, denoted DC3, even when assuming the existence of an uncountable scrambled set, is a very weak form of chaos. In particular, (i) the chaos can be unstable (it can be destroyed by conjugacy), and (ii) such an unstable system may contain no Li-Yorke pair. However, the definition can be strengthened to get DC$2\frac{1}{2}$ which is a topological invariant and implies Li-Yorke chaos, similarly as types DC1 and DC2; but…
A sufficient and necessary condition ensuring that the backward shift operator on the Köthe sequence space admits an invariant distributionally $\varepsilon$-scrambled set for some $\varepsilon>0$ is obtained, improving the main results in [F. Mart\'ınez-Giménez, P. Oprocha, A. Peris, J. Math. Anal. Appl., {\bf 351} (2009), 607--615].
Let $M$ be a compact smooth manifold without boundary. Based on results by Good and Meddaugh (2020), we prove that a strong distributional chaos is $C^0$-generic in the space of continuous self-maps (resp. homeomorphisms) of $M$. The results contain answers to questions by Li et al. (2016) and Moothathu (2011) in the zero-dimensional case. A related counter-example on the chain components under shadowing is also given.
Many definitions of chaos have appeared in the last decades and with them the question if they are equivalent in some more specific spaces. Our focus will be distributional chaos, first defined in 1994 and later subdivided into three major types (and even more subtypes). These versions of chaos are equivalent on a closed interval, but distinct in more complicated spaces. Since dendrites have much in common with the interval, we explore whether or not we can distinguish these kinds of chaos already on dendrites. In the end of the paper we will also briefly look at the correlation with other typ…
According to the recurrent frequency, many levels of recurrent points are found, such as periodic points, almost periodic points, weakly almost periodic points, quasi-weakly almost periodic points and Banach recurrent points. In this paper, we consider symbolic dynamics and show the existence of six refined levels between Banach recurrence and general recurrence. Despite the fact that these refined levels are all null-measure under any invariant measure, we further show they carry strong topological complexity. Each refined level of recurrent points is dense in the whole space and contains an …
In this article we prove that for a diffeomorphism on a compact Riemannian manifold, if there is a nontrival homoclinic class that is not uniformly hyperbolic or the diffeomorphism is a $C^{1+α}$ and there is a hyperbolic ergodic measure whose support is not uniformly hyperbolic, then we find a type of strongly distributional chaos which is stronger than usual distributional chaos and Li-Yorke chaos in the set of irregular orbits that are not uniformly hyperbolic. Meanwhile, we prove that various fractal sets are strongly distributional chaotic, such as irregular sets, level sets, several recu…
It follows from Oseledec Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (or Kingmans Subadditional Ergodic Theorem) that the Lyapunov-irregular set of points for which the Oseledec averages of a given continuous cocycle diverge has zero measure with respect to any invariant probability measure. In strong contrast, for any dynamical system f with exponential specification property and a Holder continuous matrix cocycle A, we show here that if there exist ergodic measures with different Lyapunov spectrum, then the Lyapunov-irregular set of A displays distributional chaos of type 1.
In discrete dynamical system $(X, f)$ where $X$ is a topological space and $f \in C(X,X)$, three notions of distributional chaos were defined. They were denoted by $DC1, DC2$ and $DC3$. For interval systems such three notions coincide and they will be denoted by DC-chaos. Generally speaking we have $DC1 \subseteq DC2 \subseteq DC3$-chaos. We wonder if it is possible that chaos can concentrate in some points and develop a local idea of the distributional chaos. Answering to this question, in [12] is introduced the new notion of $DCi$-points for $i = 1,2,3$. Such special points are those in whic…
We disprove the conjecture that distributional chaos of type 3 (briefly, DC3) is iteration invariant and show that a slightly strengthened definition, denoted by DC2$\frac{1}{2}$, is preserved under iteration, i.e. $f^n$ is DC2$\frac{1}{2}$ if and only if $f$ is too. Unlike DC3, DC2$\frac{1}{2}$ is also conjugacy invariant and implies Li-Yorke chaos. The definition of DC2$\frac{1}{2}$ is the following: a pair $(x,y)$ is DC2$\frac{1}{2}$ iff $Φ_{(x,y)}(0)<Φ^*_{(x,y)}(0)$, where $Φ_{(x,y)}(δ)$ (resp. $Φ^*_{(x,y)}(δ)$) is lower (resp. upper) density of times $k$ when $d(f^k(x),f^k(y))<δ$ and both…
Positive topological entropy and distributional chaos are characterized for hereditary shifts. A hereditary shift has positive topological entropy if and only if it is DC2-chaotic (or equivalently, DC3-chaotic) if and only if it is not uniquely ergodic. A hereditary shift is DC1-chaotic if and only if it is not proximal (has more than one minimal set). As every spacing shift and every beta shift is hereditary the results apply to those classes of shifts. Two open problems on topological entropy and distributional chaos of spacing shifts from an article of Banks et al. are solved thanks to this…
Omega-limit sets play an important role in one-dimensional dynamics. During last fifty year at least three definitions of basic set has appeared. Authors often use results with different definition. Here we fill in the gap of missing proof of equivalency of these definitions. Using results on basic sets we generalize results in paper [P.~Oprocha, Invariant scrambled sets and distributional chaos, Dyn. Syst. 24 (2009), no. 1, 31--43.] to the case continuous maps of finite graphs. The Li-Yorke chaos is weaker than positive topological entropy. The equivalency arises when we add condition of inva…
There are lots of results to study dynamical complexity on irregular sets and level sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (and topological pressure) etc.. However, it is unknown from the viewpoint of chaos. There are lots of results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and various chaos but it is known that positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos called DC1 so that it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. In t…
This paper establishes some criteria of chaos in non-autonomous discrete systems. Several criteria of strong Li-Yorke chaos are given. Based on these results, some criteria of distributional chaos in a sequence are established. Moreover, several criteria of distributional chaos induced by coupled-expansion for an irreducible transition matrix are obtained. Some of these results not only extend the existing related results for autonomous discrete systems to non-autonomous discrete systems, but also relax the assumptions of the counterparts. One example is provided for illustration.
We answer the two questions left open in [Z.~Kočan, Internat. J. Bifur. Chaos Appl. Sci. Engrg. \textbf{22}, article id: 125025 (2012)] i.e. whether there is a relation between $ω$-chaos and distributional chaos and whether there is a relation between an infinite LY-scrambled set and distributional chaos for dendrite maps. We construct a continuous self-map of dendrite without any \textit{DC3} pairs but containing an uncountable $ω$-scrambled set. To answer for the second question we construct dendrite $\mathcal{D}$ and continuous dendrite map without an infinite LY-scrambled set but with \tex…
We study a certain class of piecewise monotonic maps of interval. These maps are strictly monotone on finite interval partition, satisfies Markov condition and have generator property. We show that for a function from this class distributional chaos is always present and we study its basic properties. Main result states that distributional spectrum as well as weak spectrum is always finite. This is a generalization of same result for continuous maps on the interval, circle and tree. Examples showing that conditions on mentions class can not be weakened are presented.
Let $σ_{K}: \sum_{K}\rightarrow \sum_{K}$ be a shift map. For an interval $[p,q]\subset[0,1]$, let $D_{σ_{K}}([p,q])$ denote the set of pairs for which the density spectrum of the $ε$-approach time set equals $[p,q]$ when $ε$ is small and $E_{σ_{K}}([p,q])$ the set of pairs for which the density spectrum of the $ε$-approach time set converges to $[p,q]$ when $ε\rightarrow 0^+$. Then $\dim_{H} D_{σ_{K}}([p,q])=\dim_{H} E_{σ_{K}}([p,q])=2-q$. Moreover, $\mathscr{H}^{2-q}(E_{σ_{K}}([p,q]))=1$ when $q=0$ and $\mathscr{H}^{2-q}(E_{σ_{K}}([p,q]))=+\infty$ when $q>0$. Meanwhile, $\mathscr{H}^{2-q}(D_…
In this article, we provide a sufficient condition which gives Devaney chaos and distributional chaos for Cowen-Douglas operators. In fact, we obtain a distributionally chaotic criterion for bounded linear operators on Banach spaces.
This article investigates the relation between the distributional chaos and the existence of a scrambled triple. We show that for a continuous mapping $f$ acting on a compact metric space $(X,d)$, the possession of an infinite extremal distributionally scrambled set is not sufficient for the existence of a scrambled triple. We also construct an invariant Mycielski set with an uncountable extremal distributionally scrambled set without any scrambled triple.
In our another recent article, we introduce a new dynamical property for linear operators called norm-unimodality which implies distributional chaos. In the present paper, we'll give a further discussion of norm-unimodality. It is showed that norm-unimodality is similar invariant and the spectra of norm-unimodal operator is referred to. As an application, in each nest algebra there exist distributional chaotic operators. Moreover, normal operators and compact operators with regard to norm-unimodality and Li-Yorke chaos are also be considered. Specially, a small compact perturbation of the unit…
In this note we will discuss the notion of robust chaos, and show that (i) there are natural one-parameter families with robust chaos and (ii) hyperbolicity is dense within generic one-parameter families (and so these families are not robustly chaotic).
Recurrence determinism, one of the fundamental characteristics of recurrence quantification analysis, measures predictability of a trajectory of a dynamical system. It is tightly connected with the conditional probability that, given a recurrence, following states of the trajectory will be recurrences. In this paper we study recurrence determinism of interval dynamical systems. We show that recurrence determinism distinguishes three main types of $ω$-limit sets of zero entropy maps: finite, solenoidal without non-separable points, and solenoidal with non-separable points. As a corollary we obt…
A continuous map $f$ on a compact metric space $X$ induces in a natural way the map $\tilde f$ on the hyperspace $\mathcal K(X)$ of all closed non-empty subsets of $X$. We study the question of transmission of chaos between $f$ and $\tilde f$. We deal with generic, generic $\varepsilon$-, dense and dense $\varepsilon$-chaos for interval maps. We prove that all four types of chaos transmit from $f$ to $\tilde f$, while the converse transmission from $\tilde f$ to $f$ is true for generic, generic $\varepsilon$- and dense $\varepsilon$-chaos. Moreover, the transmission of dense $\varepsilon$- and…
In this paper we analyze chaotic dynamics for two dimensional nonautonomous maps through the use of a nonautonomous version of the Conley-Moser conditions given previously. With this approach we are able to give a precise definition of what is meant by a chaotic invariant set for nonautonomous maps. We extend the nonautonomous Conley-Moser conditions by deriving a new sufficient condition for the nonautonomous chaotic invariant set to be hyperbolic. We consider the specific example of a nonautonomous Hénon map and give sufficient conditions, in terms of the parameters defining the map, for the…
Dynamical systems on the interval were widely studied because they are among the simplest systems and nevertheless they turn out to have complex dynamics. Many works on chaos were inspired by the behaviour of interval maps. However these systems have many properties that are not found on other spaces. As a consequence, one-dimensional dynamics is very rich and worth a separate study. The aim of this book is to survey the relations between the various sorts of chaos and related notions for continuous interval maps. The papers on this topic are numerous but very scattered in the literature, some…
We deal with a mechanism of generating distributional chaos in planar nonautonomous ODEs and try to measure chaosity in terms of topological entropy. It is based on the interplay between simple periodic solutions. We prove the existence of infinitely many heteroclinic solutions betwen the periodic ones.
In their celebrated "Period three implies chaos" paper, Li and Yorke proved that if a continuous interval map f has a period 3 point then there is an uncountable scrambled set S on which f has very complicated dynamics. One question arises naturally: Can this set S be chosen invariant under f? The answer is positive for turbulent maps and negative otherwise. In this note, we shall use symbolic dynamics to achieve our goal. In particular, we obtain that the tent map T(x) = 1 - |2x-1| on [0, 1] has a dense uncountable invariant 1-scrambled set which consists of transitive points.
From a two-agent, two-strategy congestion game where both agents apply the multiplicative weights update algorithm, we obtain a two-parameter family of maps of the unit square to itself. Interesting dynamics arise on the invariant diagonal, on which a two-parameter family of bimodal interval maps exhibits periodic orbits and chaos. While the fixed point $b$ corresponding to a Nash equilibrium of such map $f$ is usually repelling, it is globally Cesaro attracting on the diagonal, that is, \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}\frac1n\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}f^k(x)=b \] for every $x$ in the minimal invariant interval. Thi…
In the family of area-contracting Hénon-like maps with zero topological entropy we show that there are maps with infinitely many moduli of stability. Thus one cannot find all the possible topological types for non-chaotic area-contracting Hénon-like maps in a family with finitely many parameters. A similar result, but for the chaotic maps in the family, became part of the folklore a short time after Hénon used such maps to produce what was soon conjectured to be the first non-hyperbolic strange attractor in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Our proof uses recent results about infinitely renormalisable area-cont…
For a dynamical system $(X,f)$, $X$ being a compact metric space with metric $d$ and $f$ being a continuous map $X\to X$, a set $S\subseteq X$ is scrambled if every pair $(x,y)$ of distinct points in $S$ is scrambled, i.e., $\liminf_{n\to+\infty}d(f^n(x),f^n(y))=0$ and $\limsup_{n\to+\infty}d(f^n(x),f^n(y))>0$. The system $(X,f)$ is Li-Yorke chaotic if it has an uncountable scrambled set. It is known that, for interval and circle maps, the existence of a scrambled pair implies Li-Yorke chaos, in fact the existence of a Cantor scrambled set. We prove that the same result holds for graph maps. W…
In infinite ergodic theory, two distributional limit theorems are well-known. One is characterized by the Mittag-Leffler distribution for time averages of $L^1(m)$ functions, i.e., integrable functions with respect to an infinite invariant measure. The other is characterized by the generalized arc-sine distribution for time averages of non-$L^1(m)$ functions. Here, we provide another distributional behavior of time averages of non-$L^1(m)$ functions in one-dimensional intermittent maps where each has an indifferent fixed point and an infinite invariant measure. Observation functions considered…
We consider a smooth two-parameter family $f_{a,L}\colonθ\mapsto θ+a+LΦ(θ)$ of circle maps with a finite number of critical points. For sufficiently large $L$ we construct a set $A_L^{(\infty)}$ of $a$-values of positive Lebesgue measure for which the corresponding $f_{a,L}$ exhibits an exponential growth of derivatives along the orbits of the critical points. Our construction considerably improves the previous one of Wang and Young for the same class of families, in that the following asymptotic estimate holds: the Lebesgue measure of $A_L^{(\infty)}$ tends to full measure in $a$-space as $L$…
A continuous map $f$ from a compact interval $I$ into itself is densely (resp. generically) chaotic if the set of points $(x,y)$ such that $\limsup_{n\to+\infty}|f^n(x)-f^n(y)|>0$ and $\liminf_{n\to+\infty} |f^n(x)-f^n(y)|=0$ is dense (resp. residual) in $I\times I$. We prove that if the interval map $f$ is densely but not generically chaotic then there is a descending sequence of invariant intervals, each of which containing a horseshoe for $f^2$. It implies that every densely chaotic interval map is of type at most $6$ for Sharkovsky's order (that is, there exists a periodic point of period …
In this paper, various chaotic properties and their relationships for interval maps are discussed. It is shown that the proximal relation is an equivalence relation for any zero entropy interval map. The structure of the set of $f$-nonseparable pairs is well demonstrated and so is its relationship to Li-Yorke chaos. For a zero entropy interval map, it is shown that a pair is a sequence entropy pair if and only if it is $f$-nonseparable. Moreover, some equivalent conditions of positive entropy which relate to the number "3" are obtained. It is shown that for an interval map if it is topological…
Chaotic dynamics can be quite heterogeneous in the sense that in some regions the dynamics are unstable in more directions than in other regions. When trajectories wander between these regions, the dynamics is complicated. We say a chaotic invariant set is heterogeneous when arbitrarily close to each point of the set there are different periodic points with different numbers of unstable dimensions. We call such dynamics heterogeneous chaos (or hetero-chaos), While we believe it is common for physical systems to be hetero-chaotic, few explicit examples have been proved to be hetero-chaotic. Her…
The concept of "$A$-coupled-expanding" map for a transition matrix $A$ has been studied as one of the most important criteria of chaos in the past years. In this paper, the lower bound of the topological entropy for strictly $A$-coupled-expanding maps is studied as a criterion for chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke, which is less conservative and more generalized than the latest result is presented. Furthermore, some conditions for $A$-coupled-expanding maps excluding the strictness to be factors of subshifts of finite type are derived. In addition, the topological entropy of partition-$A$-coupled…
This paper introduces a class of polynomial maps in Euclidean spaces, investigates the conditions under which there exist Smale horseshoes and uniformly hyperbolic invariant sets, studies the chaotic dynamical behavior and strange attractors, and shows that some maps are chaotic in the sense of Li-Yorke or Devaney. This type of maps includes both the Logistic map and the Hénon map. For some maps in three-dimensional spaces under certain conditions, if the expansion dimension is equal to one or two, it is shown that there exist a Smale horseshoe and a uniformly hyperbolic invariant set on which…
A route to chaos is studied in 3-dimensional maps of logistic type. Mechanisms of period doubling for invariant closed curves (ICC) are found for specific 3-dimensional maps. These bifurcations cannot be observed for ICC in the 2-dimensional case. When the parameter of the system is modified, localized oscillations occur on the ICC that give rise to weakly chaotic rings, then to chaotic attractors, which finally disappear by contact bifurcations. These maps can be considered as models for the symbiotic interaction of three species.
