We consider a smooth two-parameter family $f_{a,L}\colonθ\mapsto θ+a+LΦ(θ)$ of circle maps with a finite number of critical points. For sufficiently large $L$ we construct a set $A_L^{(\infty)}$ of $a$-values of positive Lebesgue measure for which the corresponding $f_{a,L}$ exhibits an exponential growth of derivatives along the orbits of the critical points. Our construction considerably improves the previous one of Wang and Young for the same class of families, in that the following asymptotic estimate holds: the Lebesgue measure of $A_L^{(\infty)}$ tends to full measure in $a$-space as $L$ tends to infinity.

In a one-parameter study of a noninvertible family of maps of the plane arising in the context of a numerical integration scheme, Lorenz studied a sequence of transitions from an attracting fixed point to "computational chaos." As part of the transition sequence, he proposed the following as a possible scenario for the breakup of an invariant circle: the invariant circle develops regions of increasingly sharper curvature until at a critical parameter value it develops cusps; beyond this parameter value, the invariant circle fails to persist, and the system exhibits chaotic behavior on an invar…
The occurrence of strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) in quasiperiodically forced systems has attracted considerable interest over the last two decades, in particular since it provides a rich class of examples for the possibility of complicated dynamics in the absence of chaos. Their existence was discovered in the early 1980's, independently by Herman for quasiperiodic SL(2,R)-cocycles and by Grebogi et al for so-called 'pinched skew products'. However, except for these two particular classes there are still hardly any rigorous results on the topic, despite a large number of numerical studie…
We study parameter families of quasiperiodically forced (qpf) circle maps with Diophantine frequency. Under certain C1-open conditions concerning their geometry, we prove that these families exhibit nonuniformly hyperbolic behaviour, often referred to as the existence of strange nonchaotic attractors, on parameter sets of positive measure. This provides a nonlinear version of results by Young on quasiperiodic SL (2;R)-cocycles and complements previous results in this direction which hold for sets of frequencies of positive measure, but did not allow for an explicit characterisation of these fr…
We study a class of globally coupled maps in the continuum limit, where the individual maps are expanding maps of the circle. The circle maps in question are such that the uncoupled system admits a unique absolutely continuous invariant measure (acim), which is furthermore mixing. Interaction arises in the form of diffusive coupling, which involves a function that is discontinuous on the circle. We show that for sufficiently small coupling strength the coupled map system admits a unique absolutely continuous invariant distribution, which depends on the coupling strength $\varepsilon$. Furtherm…
For a dynamical system $(X,f)$, $X$ being a compact metric space with metric $d$ and $f$ being a continuous map $X\to X$, a set $S\subseteq X$ is scrambled if every pair $(x,y)$ of distinct points in $S$ is scrambled, i.e., $\liminf_{n\to+\infty}d(f^n(x),f^n(y))=0$ and $\limsup_{n\to+\infty}d(f^n(x),f^n(y))>0$. The system $(X,f)$ is Li-Yorke chaotic if it has an uncountable scrambled set. It is known that, for interval and circle maps, the existence of a scrambled pair implies Li-Yorke chaos, in fact the existence of a Cantor scrambled set. We prove that the same result holds for graph maps. W…
We study the fractional maps of complex order, $α_0e^{i r π/2}$ for $0<α_0<1$ and $0\le r<1$ in 1 and 2 dimensions. In two dimensions, we study H{é}non and Lozi map and in $1d$, we study logistic, tent, Gauss, circle, and Bernoulli maps. The generalization in $2d$ can be done in two different ways which are not equivalent for fractional-order and lead to different bifurcation diagrams. We observed that the smooth maps such as logistic, Gauss, and H{é}non maps do not show chaos while discontinuous maps such as Lozi, Bernoulli, and circle maps show chaos. The tent map is continuous but not diffe…
Rotational invariant circles of area-preserving maps are an important and well-studied example of KAM tori. John Greene conjectured that the locally most robust rotational circles have rotation numbers that are noble, i.e., have continued fractions with a tail of ones, and that, of these circles, the most robust has golden mean rotation number. The accurate numerical confirmation of these conjectures relies on the map having a time reversal symmetry, and these methods cannot be applied to more general maps. In this paper, we develop a method based on a weighted Birkhoff average for identifying…
We study the effects of IID random perturbations of amplitude $ε> 0$ on the asymptotic dynamics of one-parameter families $\{f_a : S^1 \to S^1, a \in [0,1]\}$ of smooth multimodal maps which "predominantly expanding", i.e., $|f'_a| \gg 1$ away from small neighborhoods of the critical set $\{ f'_a = 0 \}$. We obtain, for any $ε> 0$, a \emph{checkable, finite-time} criterion on the parameter $a$ for random perturbations of the map $f_a$ to exhibit (i) a unique stationary measure, and (ii) a positive Lyapunov exponent comparable to $\int_{S^1} \log |f_a'| \, dx$. This stands in contrast with the …
We consider escape from chaotic maps through a subset of phase space, the hole. Escape rates are known to be locally constant functions of the hole position and size. In spite of this, for the doubling map we can extend the current best result for small holes, a linear dependence on hole size h, to include a smooth h^2 ln h term and explicit fractal terms to h^2 and higher orders, confirmed by numerical simulations. For more general hole locations the asymptotic form depends on a dynamical Diophantine condition using periodic orbits ordered by stability.
For a certain parametrized family of maps on the circle with critical points and logarithmic singularities where derivatives blow up to infinity, we construct a positive measure set of parameters corresponding to maps which exhibit nonuniformly expanding behavior. This implies the existence of "chaotic" dynamics in dissipative homoclinic tangles in periodically perturbed differential equations.
In this article, we attempt to study the possible link between the dynamics of a circle map and the caustics of its iterations. The attention is on a geometrically defined off-center reflections, which, coincidentally, is also a generalization of standard perturbation of rotation. Some results of the caustics and dynamics of the family of maps are given. The method of symplectic topology is particularly exploited to study the caustics because of its potential in further development. The mode-locking behavior and width of resonance zone are also studied. Furthermore, there are interesting probl…
The concept of "$A$-coupled-expanding" map for a transition matrix $A$ has been studied as one of the most important criteria of chaos in the past years. In this paper, the lower bound of the topological entropy for strictly $A$-coupled-expanding maps is studied as a criterion for chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke, which is less conservative and more generalized than the latest result is presented. Furthermore, some conditions for $A$-coupled-expanding maps excluding the strictness to be factors of subshifts of finite type are derived. In addition, the topological entropy of partition-$A$-coupled…
What input signals will lead to synchrony vs. desynchrony in a group of biological oscillators? This question connects with both classical dynamical systems analyses of entrainment and phase locking and with emerging studies of stimulation patterns for controlling neural network activity. Here, we focus on the response of a population of uncoupled, elliptically bursting neurons to a common pulsatile input. We extend a phase reduction from the literature to capture inputs of varied strength, leading to a circle map with discontinuities of various orders. In a combined analytical and numerical a…
Given a measure $ν$ on a regular planar domain $D$, the Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure of $ν$ studied in this paper is the random measure ${\widetilde ν}$ obtained as the limit of the exponential of the $γ$-parameter circle averages of the Gaussian free field on $D$ weighted by $ν$. We investigate the dimensional and geometric properties of these random measures. We first show that if $ν$ is a finite Borel measure on $D$ with exact dimension $α>0$, then the associated GMC measure ${\widetilde ν}$ is non-degenerate and is almost surely exact dimensional with dimension $α-\frac{γ^2}{2}$, …
