In their celebrated "Period three implies chaos" paper, Li and Yorke proved that if a continuous interval map f has a period 3 point then there is an uncountable scrambled set S on which f has very complicated dynamics. One question arises naturally: Can this set S be chosen invariant under f? The answer is positive for turbulent maps and negative otherwise. In this note, we shall use symbolic dynamics to achieve our goal. In particular, we obtain that the tent map T(x) = 1 - |2x-1| on [0, 1] has a dense uncountable invariant 1-scrambled set which consists of transitive points.
In this paper, we construct a homeomorphism on the unit closed disk to show that an invertible mapping on a compact metric space is Li-Yorke chaotic does not imply its inverse being Li-Yorke chaotic.
We construct an infinite-dimensional compact metric space $X$, which is a closed subset of $\mathbb{S}\times\mathbb{H}$, where $\mathbb{S}$ is the unit circle and $\mathbb{H}$ is the Hilbert cube, and a skew-product map $F$ acting on $X$ such that $(X,F)$ is Li-Yorke sensitive but possesses at most countable scrambled sets. This disproves the conjecture of Akin and Kolyada that Li-Yorke sensitivity implies Li-Yorke chaos from the article [Akin E., Kolyada S., Li-Yorke sensitivity, Nonlinearity 16, (2003), 1421-1433].
In this paper, we give two examples to show that an invertible mapping is Li-Yorke chaotic does not imply its inverse being Li-Yorke chaotic, in which one is an invertible bounded linear operator on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space and the other is a homeomorphism on the unit open disk. Moreover, we use the last example to prove that Li-Yorke chaos is not preserved under topological conjugacy.
In this paper, we discuss the relationship between Li-Yorke chaos and distributional chaos in a sequence. We point out the set of all distributional $δ$-scramble pairs in the sequence $Q$ is a $G_δ$ set, and prove that Li-Yorke $δ$-chaos is equivalent to distributional $δ$-chaos in a sequence, a uniformly chaotic set is a distributional scramble set in some sequence and a class of transitive system implies distributional chaos in a sequence.
We study chaotic properties of uniformly convergent nonautonomous dynamical systems. We show that, contrary to the autonomous systems on the compact interval, positivity of topological sequence entropy and occurrence of Li-Yorke chaos are not equivalent, more precisely, neither of the two possible implications is true.
It is proved that positive entropy implies mean Li-Yorke chaos for a G-system, where G is a countable infinite discrete bi-orderable amenable group. Examples are given for the cases of integer lattice groups and groups of integer unipotent upper triangular matrices.
This paper is concerned with strong Li-Yorke chaos induced by A-coupled-expansion for time-varying (i.e., nonautonomous) discrete systems in metric spaces. Some criteria of chaos in the strong sense of Li-Yorke are established via strict coupled-expansions for irreducible transition matrices in bounded and closed subsets of complete metric spaces and in compact subsets of metric spaces, respectively, where their conditions are weaker than those in the existing literature. One example is provided for illustration.
Recurrence determinism, one of the fundamental characteristics of recurrence quantification analysis, measures predictability of a trajectory of a dynamical system. It is tightly connected with the conditional probability that, given a recurrence, following states of the trajectory will be recurrences. In this paper we study recurrence determinism of interval dynamical systems. We show that recurrence determinism distinguishes three main types of $ω$-limit sets of zero entropy maps: finite, solenoidal without non-separable points, and solenoidal with non-separable points. As a corollary we obt…
In this paper, for any given polynomial, by analyzing the limiting behavior of ergodic averages along polynomials of several variables and prime numbers, we prove that for a topology dynamical system, positive entropy implies mean Li-Yoke chaos along non-constant polynomials of several variables and prime numbers.
We prove that if a topological dynamical system is mean sensitive and contains a mean proximal pair consisting of a transitive point and a periodic point, then it is mean Li-Yorke chaotic (DC2 chaotic). On the other hand we show that a system is mean proximal if and only if it is uniquely ergodic and the unique measure is supported on one point.
We analyze the characteristics of the global attractor of a type of dissipative nonautonomous dynamical systems in terms of the Sacker and Sell spectrum of its linear part. The model gives rise to a pattern of nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation which can be understood as a generalization of the classical autonomous one. We pay special attention to the dynamics at the bifurcation point, showing the possibility of occurrence of Li-Yorke chaos in the corresponding attractor and hence of a high degree of unpredictability.
It is shown that in a topological dynamical system with positive entropy, there is a measure-theoretically "rather big" set such that a multivariant version of mean Li-Yorke chaos happens on the closure of the stable or unstable set of any point from the set. It is also proved that the intersections of the sets of asymptotic tuples and mean Li-Yorke tuples with the set of topological entropy tuples are dense in the set of topological entropy tuples respectively.
Let $X$ be a dendrite with set of endpoints $E(X)$ closed and let $f:~X \to X$ be a continuous map with zero topological entropy. Let $P(f)$ be the set of periodic points of $f$. We prove that if $L$ is an infinite $ω$-limit set of $f$ then $L\cap P(f)\subset E(X)^{\prime}$, where $E(X)^{\prime}$ is the set of all accumulations points of $E(X)$. Furthermore, if $E(X)$ is countable and $L$ is uncountable then $L\cap P(f)=\emptyset$. We also show that if $E(X)^{\prime}$ is finite then any uncountable $ω$-limit set of $f$ has a decomposition and as a consequence if $f$ has a Li-Yorke pair $(x,y)$…
For a dynamical system $(X,f)$, $X$ being a compact metric space with metric $d$ and $f$ being a continuous map $X\to X$, a set $S\subseteq X$ is scrambled if every pair $(x,y)$ of distinct points in $S$ is scrambled, i.e., $\liminf_{n\to+\infty}d(f^n(x),f^n(y))=0$ and $\limsup_{n\to+\infty}d(f^n(x),f^n(y))>0$. The system $(X,f)$ is Li-Yorke chaotic if it has an uncountable scrambled set. It is known that, for interval and circle maps, the existence of a scrambled pair implies Li-Yorke chaos, in fact the existence of a Cantor scrambled set. We prove that the same result holds for graph maps. W…
We prove the presence of chaos near a homoclinic orbit in the modified Li-Yorke sense [10] by implementing chaotic perturbations. A Duffing oscillator is considered to show the effectiveness of our technique, and simulations that support the theoretical results are depicted. Ott-Grebogi-Yorke and Pyragas control methods are used to stabilize almost periodic motions.
In the present paper, we use the generalized multifractal framework introduced by Olsen to study the Bowen entropy and packing entropy of historic sets with typical weights over aperiodic and irreducible shifts of finite type. Following those results and a transfer from almost everywhere to everywhere, we show that for each point $ω$ in a irreducible shift of finite type $Σ_A$, the Bowen entropy of the set consisting of all the points that are mean Li-Yorke pairs with $ω$ is $0$, and its packing entropy is full. This result is beyond the ergodic theory. Also, by the transfer from almost everyw…
If a topological dynamical system $(X,T)$ has positive topological entropy, then it is multivariant mean Li-Yorke chaotic along a sequence $\{a_k\}_{k=1}^\infty$ of positive integers which is "good" for pointwise ergodic convergence with a mild condition; more specifically, there exists a Cantor subset $K$ of $X$ such that for every $n\ge2$ and pairwise distinct points $x_1,x_2,\dotsc,x_n$ in $K$ we have \[\liminf_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N}\sum_{k=1}^N\max_{1\leq i<j\leq n} d(T^{a_k}x_i,T^{a_k}x_j)=0\] and \[\limsup_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N}\sum_{k=1}^N\min_{1\leq i<j\leq n} d(T^{a_k}x_i,T^{a_k}x_j…
By using the reduction technique to impulsive differential equations [1], we rigorously prove the presence of chaos in dynamic equations on time scales (DETS). The results of the present study are based on the Li-Yorke definition of chaos. This is the first time in the literature that chaos is obtained for DETS. An illustrative example is presented by means of a Duffing equation on a time scale.
It is rigorously proved that the chaotic dynamics of the non-smooth system with relay function is persistent even if a chaotic perturbation is applied. We consider chaos in a modified Li-Yorke sense such that infinitely many almost periodic motions take place in its basis. It is demonstrated that the system under investigation possesses countable infinity of chaotic sets of solutions. Coupled Duffing oscillators are used to show the effectiveness of our technique, and simulations that support the theoretical results are represented. Moreover, a chaos control procedure based on the Ott-Grebogi-…
In this article, we show that a chaotic behavior can be found on a cube with arbitrary finite dimension. That is, the cube is a quasi-minimal set with Poincare chaos. Moreover, the dynamics is shown to be Devaney and Li-Yorke chaotic. It can be characterized as a domain-structured chaos for an associated map. Previously, this was known only for unit section and for Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos.
Omega-limit sets play an important role in one-dimensional dynamics. During last fifty year at least three definitions of basic set has appeared. Authors often use results with different definition. Here we fill in the gap of missing proof of equivalency of these definitions. Using results on basic sets we generalize results in paper [P.~Oprocha, Invariant scrambled sets and distributional chaos, Dyn. Syst. 24 (2009), no. 1, 31--43.] to the case continuous maps of finite graphs. The Li-Yorke chaos is weaker than positive topological entropy. The equivalency arises when we add condition of inva…
In this paper, we study the mean Li-Yorke chaotic phenomenon along any infinite positive integer sequence for infinite-dimensional random dynamical systems. To be precise, we prove that if an injective continuous infinite-dimensional random dynamical system $(X,ϕ)$ over an invertible ergodic Polish system $(Ω,\mathcal{F},\mathbb{P},θ)$ admits a $ϕ$-invariant random compact subset $K$ with $h_{top}(K,ϕ)>0$, then given a positive integer sequence $\mathbf{a}=\{a_i\}_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ with $\lim_{i\to+\infty}a_i=+\infty$, for $\mathbb{P}$-a.s. $ω\inΩ$ there exists an uncountable subset $S(ω)\subs…
Recently, in connection with C*-algebra theory, the first author and Danilo Royer introduced ultragraph shift spaces. In this paper we define a family of metrics for the topology in such spaces, and use these metrics to study the existence of chaos in the shift. In particular we characterize all ultragraph shift spaces that have Li-Yorke chaos (an uncountable scrambled set), and prove that such property implies the existence of a perfect and scrambled set in the ultragraph shift space. Furthermore, this scrambled set can be chosen compact, what is not the case for a labelled edge shift (with t…
Let $π\colon\mathscr{X}\rightarrow\mathscr{Y}$ be an extension of minimal compact metric flows such that $\texttt{R}_π\not=Δ_X$. A subflow of $\texttt{R}_π$ is called an M-flow if it is T.T. and contains a dense set of a.p. points. In this paper we mainly prove the following: (1) $π$ is PI iff $Δ_X$ is the unique M-flow containing $Δ_X$ in $\texttt{R}_π$. (2) If $π$ is not PI, then there exists a canonical Li-Yorke chaotic M-flow in $\texttt{R}_π$. In particular, an Ellis weak-mixing non-proximal extension is non-PI and so Li-Yorke chaotic. (3) A unbounded or non-minimal M-flow, not necessaril…
We consider nonautonomous discrete dynamical systems $\{ f_n\}_{n\ge 1}$, where every $f_n$ is a surjective continuous map $[0,1]\to [0,1]$ such that $f_n$ converges uniformly to a map $f$. We show, among others, that if $f$ is chaotic in the sense of Li and Yorke then the nonautonomous system $ \{ f_n\}_{n\ge 1}$ is Li-Yorke chaotic as well, and that the same is true for distributional chaos. If $f$ has zero topological entropy then the nonautonomous system inherits its infinite $ω$-limit sets.
The aim of the paper is to correct and improve some results concerning distributional chaos of type 3. We show that in a general compact metric space, distributional chaos of type 3, denoted DC3, even when assuming the existence of an uncountable scrambled set, is a very weak form of chaos. In particular, (i) the chaos can be unstable (it can be destroyed by conjugacy), and (ii) such an unstable system may contain no Li-Yorke pair. However, the definition can be strengthened to get DC$2\frac{1}{2}$ which is a topological invariant and implies Li-Yorke chaos, similarly as types DC1 and DC2; but…
Let (X,T) be a topologically transitive dynamical system. We show that if there is a subsystem (Y,T) of (X,T) such that (X\times Y, T\times T) is transitive, then (X,T) is strongly chaotic in the sense of Li and Yorke. We then show that many of the known sufficient conditions in the literature, as well as a few new results, are corollaries of this statement. In fact, the kind of chaotic behavior we deduce in these results is a much stronger variant of Li-Yorke chaos which we call uniform chaos. For minimal systems we show, among other results, that uniform chaos is preserved by extensions and …
For a continuous self-map of a star graph to be Li-Yorke chaotic and to have full periodicity, we prove some new sufficient conditions on the orbit of the center.
We study discontinuous interval maps generated by the action of erasing block substitutions on the binary expansion. After establishing some general properties of these maps, we categorize erasing block substitutions in a hierarchy of classes displaying progressively stronger erasing character. We investigate how this affects the dynamics of the corresponding interval maps, showing that the richest dynamical behavior (Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos, infinite topological entropy) is achieved at a precise step in this hierarchy, which we name completely erasing substitutions. KEYWORDS: Topological d…
Periodicity plays a significant role in the chaos theory from the beginning since the skeleton of chaos can consist of infinitely many unstable periodic motions. This is true for chaos in the sense of Devaney [1], Li-Yorke [2] and the one obtained through period-doubling cascade [3]. Countable number of periodic orbits exist in any neighborhood of a structurally stable Poincaré homoclinic orbit, which can be considered as a criterion for the presence of complex dynamics [4]-[6]. It was certified by Shilnikov [7] and Seifert [8] that it is possible to replace periodic solutions by Poisson stabl…

The main aim of the present paper is to study relations between $n$-scrambled tuples and their attraction-adherence properties with respect to various sequences of integers. This extends previous research on relations between chaos in the sense of Li and Yorke and distributional chaos with respect to a given sequence. Moreover, we construct a system which is $n$-distributionally chaotic but not $(n+1)$-chaotic.
To prove presence of chaos for fractals, a new mathematical concept of abstract similarity is introduced. As an example, the space of symbolic strings on a finite number of symbols is proved to possess the property. Moreover, Sierpinski fractals, Koch curve as well as Cantor set satisfy the definition. A similarity map is introduced and the problem of chaos presence for the sets is solved by considering the dynamics of the map. This is true for Poincare, Li-Yorke and Devaney chaos, even in multi-dimensional cases. Original numerical simulations which illustrate the results are delivered.
The Devaney, Li-Yorke and distributional chaos in plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ can occur in the continuous dynamical system generated by Euler equation branching. Euler equation branching is a type of differential inclusion $\dot x \in \{f(x),g(x) \} $, where $f,g:X \subset \mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ are continuous and $f(x) \neq g(x)$ in every point $x \in X$. Stockman and Raines (Stockman, D. R.; Raines, B. R.: Chaotic sets and Euler equation branching, Journal of Mathematical Economics, 2010, Volume 46, pp. 1173-1193) defined so-called chaotic set in plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ which existence…
Morphogenesis, as it is understood in a wide sense by René Thom, is considered for various types of chaos. That is, those, obtained by period-doubling cascade, Devaney's and Li-Yorke chaos. Moreover, in discussion form we consider inheritance of intermittency, the double-scroll Chua's attractor and quasiperiodical motions as a possible skeleton of a chaotic attractor. To make our introduction of the paper more clear, we have to say that one may consider other various accompanying concepts of chaos such that a structure of the chaotic attractor, its fractal dimension, form of the bifurcation di…
Let $G$ be an infinite countable discrete amenable group. For any $G$-action on a compact metric space $(X,ρ)$, it turns out that if the action has positive topological entropy, then for any sequence $\{s_i\}_{i=1}^{+\infty}$ with pairwise distinct elements in $G$ there exists a Cantor subset $K$ of $X$ which is Li-Yorke chaotic along this sequence, that is, for any two distinct points $x,y\in K$, one has \[\limsup_{i\to+\infty}ρ(s_i x,s_iy)>0,\ \text{and}\ \liminf_{i\to+\infty}ρ(s_ix,s_iy)=0.\]
We state that for continuous interval maps the existence of a non empty closed invariant subset which is transitive and sensitive to initial conditions is implied by positive topological entropy and implies chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke, and we exhibit examples showing that these three notions are distinct.
In this paper, various chaotic properties and their relationships for interval maps are discussed. It is shown that the proximal relation is an equivalence relation for any zero entropy interval map. The structure of the set of $f$-nonseparable pairs is well demonstrated and so is its relationship to Li-Yorke chaos. For a zero entropy interval map, it is shown that a pair is a sequence entropy pair if and only if it is $f$-nonseparable. Moreover, some equivalent conditions of positive entropy which relate to the number "3" are obtained. It is shown that for an interval map if it is topological…
In the present paper, an essential generalization of the symbolic dynamics is considered. We apply the notions of abstract self-similar sets and the similarity map for a chaos introduction, which orbits are expanded among infinitely many modules. The dynamics is free of dimensional, metrical and topological assumptions. It unites all the three types of Poincare, Li-Yorke and Devaney chaos in a single model, which can be unbounded. The research demonstrates that the dynamics of Poincare chaos is of exceptional use to analyze discrete and continuous-time random processes. Examples, illustrating …
