Dynamics of interval maps generated by erasing substitutions

We study discontinuous interval maps generated by the action of erasing block substitutions on the binary expansion. After establishing some general properties of these maps, we categorize erasing block substitutions in a hierarchy of classes displaying progressively stronger erasing character. We investigate how this affects the dynamics of the corresponding interval maps, showing that the richest dynamical behavior (Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos, infinite topological entropy) is achieved at a precise step in this hierarchy, which we name completely erasing substitutions. The simplest erasing substitution

In this work, we begin the study of a new class of dynamical systems determined by interval maps generated by the symbolic action of erasing substitution rules. We do this by discussing in some detail the geometric, analytical, dynamical and arithmetic properties of a particular example, which has the virtue of being arguably the simplest and that at the same time produces interesting properties and new challenging problems.

One-dimensional Substitution Tilings with an Interval Projection Structure

We study nonperiodic tilings of the line obtained by a projection method with an interval projection structure. Characterization of minimal sequences associated with self-similar interval exchange maps

Sturm numbers and substitution invariance of 3iet words

In this paper, we give a necessary condition for an infinite word defined by a non-degenerate interval exchange on three intervals (3iet word) to be invariant by a substitution: a natural parameter associated to this word must be a Sturm number. We deduce some algebraic consequences from this condition concerning the incidence matrix of the associated substitution. As a by-product of our proof, we give a combinatorial characterization of 3iet words.

Characterization of substitution invariant 3iet words

We study infinite words coding an orbit under an exchange of three intervals which have full complexity $\C(n)=2n+1$ for all $n\in\N$ (non-degenerate 3iet words). In terms of parameters of the interval exchange and the starting point of the orbit we characterize those 3iet words which are invariant under a primitive substitution. Thus, we generalize the result recently obtained for sturmian words.

The Gauss map on a class of interval translation mappings

We study the dynamics of a class of interval translation map on three intervals. We show that in this class the typical ITM is of finite type (reduce to an interval exchange transformation) and that the complement contains a Cantor set. We relate our maps to substitution subshifts. Results on Hausdorff dimension of the attractor and on unique ergodicity are obtained.

Uniform Distribution of Kakutani Partitions Generated By Substitution Schemes

Substitution schemes provide a classical method for constructing tilings of Euclidean space. Allowing multiple scales in the scheme, we introduce a rich family of sequences of tile partitions generated by the substitution rule, which include the sequence of partitions of the unit interval considered by Kakutani as a special case. Wandering intervals in affine extensions of self-similar interval exchange maps: the cubic Arnoux-Yoccoz map

In this article we provide sufficient conditions on a self-similar interval exchange map, whose renormalization matrix has complex eigenvalues of modulus greater than one, for the existence of affine interval exchange maps with wandering intervals and semi-conjugate with it. These conditions are based on the algebraic properties of the complex eigenvalues and the complex fractals built from the natural substitution emerging from self-similarity. We show that the cubic Arnoux-Yoccoz interval exchange map satisfies these conditions.

Tree substitutions and Rauzy fractals

We work with attracting subshifts generated by substitutions which are also irreducible parageometric automorphisms of free groups. For such a dynamical system, we construct a tree substitution to approximate the repelling real tree of the automorphism. We produce images of this tree inside the Rauzy fractal when the substitution is irreducible Pisot. We describe the contour of this tree and compute an interval exchange transformation of the circle covering the original substitution.
