The smallness is proved of fundamental groups for arithmetic schemes. This is a higher dimensional analogue of the Hermite-Minkowski theorem. We also refer to the case of varieties over finite fields. As an application, we prove certain finiteness results of representations of the fundamental groups over algebraically closed fields.
Let $K/F$ be an unramified quadratic extension of non-Archimedian local fields with residue character not equals to 2. We prove the linear Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma for GL$_4$ with the unit element in the spherical Hecke Algebra. In this article, all measures are normalized by its hyperspecial subgroup.
A practical algorithm to compute the fundamental domain of an arithmetic Fuchsian group was given by Voight, and implemented in Magma. It was later expanded by Page to the case of arithmetic Kleinian groups. We combine and improve on parts of both algorithms to produce a more efficient algorithm for arithmetic Fuchsian groups. This algorithm is implemented in PARI/GP, and we demonstrate the improvements by comparing running times versus the live Magma implementation.
In this paper we investigate the theory of cuspidalisation of sections of arithmetic fundamental groups of hyperbolic curves to cuspidally i-th and 2/p-th step prosolvable arithmetic fundamental groups. As a consequence we exhibit two, necessary and sufficient, conditions for sections of arithmetic fundamental groups of hyperbolic curves over p-adic local fields to arise from rational points. We also exhibit a class of sections of arithmetic fundamental groups of p-adic curves which are orthogonal to Pic, and which satisfy (unconditionally) one of the above conditions.
We show the non-existence of sections of arithmetic fundamental groups of open p-adic annuli of small radii, this implies the non-existence of sections of arithmetic fundamental groups of formal boundaries of formal germs of p-adic curves.
We prove the arithmetic fundamental lemma conjecture over a general $p$-adic field with odd residue cardinality $q\geq \dim V$. Our strategy is similar to the one used by the second author during his proof of the AFL over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ (arXiv:1909.02697), but only requires the modularity of divisor generating series on the Shimura variety (as opposed to its integral model). The resulting increase in flexibility allows us to work over an arbitrary base field. To carry out the strategy, we also generalize results of Howard (arXiv:1303.0545) on CM-cycle intersection and of Ehlen--Sankaran (arXiv…
We show the existence of group-theoretic sections of certain geometrically pro-nilpotent by abelian arithmetic fundamental groups of hyperbolic curves over p-adic local fields which are non-geometric, i.e., which do not arise from rational points. Among these quotients is the geometrically metabelian arithmetic fundamental group.
In this paper we will define a qc fundamental group for an arithmetic scheme by quasi-galois closed covers. Then we will give a computation for such a group and will prove that the etale fundamental group of an arithmetic scheme is a normal subgroup in our qc fundamental group, which make up the main theorem of the paper. Hence, our group gives us a prior estimate of the etale fundamental group. The quotient group reflects the topological properties of the scheme.
We show that for any given field $k$ and natural number $r\geq2$, every continuous extension of the absolute Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}_k$ by a finite group is the arithmetic fundamental group of a geometrically connected smooth projective variety over $k$ of dimension $r$.
In this paper we exhibit the notion of (uniformly) good sections of arithmetic fundamental groups. We introduce and investigate the problem of cuspidalisation of sections of arithmetic fundamental groups, its ultimate aim is to reduce the solution of the Grothendieck anabelian section conjecture to the solution of its birational version. We show that (uniformly) good sections of arithmetic fundamental groups of smooth, proper, and geometrically connected hyperbolic curves over slim (and regular) fields can be lifted to sections of cuspidally abelian absolute Galois groups. As an application we…
We show the existence of group-theoretic sections of the "etale-by-geometrically abelian" quotient of the arithmetic fundamental group of hyperbolic curves over $p$-adic local fields relative to a proper and flat model which are non-geometric, i.e., which do not arise from rational points.
W. Zhang's arithmetic fundamental lemma (AFL) is a conjectural identity between the derivative of an orbital integral on a symmetric space with an arithmetic intersection number on a unitary Rapoport-Zink space. In the minuscule case, Rapoport-Terstiege-Zhang have verified the AFL conjecture via explicit evaluation of both sides of the identity. We present a simpler way for evaluating the arithmetic intersection number, thereby providing a new proof of the AFL conjecture in the minuscule case.
In this paper we will give a computation of the étale fundamental group of an integral arithmetic scheme. For such a scheme, we will prove that the étale fundamental group is naturally isomorphic to the Galois group of the maximal formally unramified extension over the function field. It consists of the main theorem of the paper. Here, formally unramified will be proved to be arithmetically unramified which is defined in an evident manner and coincides with that in algebraic number theory. Hence, formally unramified has an arithmetic sense. At the same time, such a computation coincides with t…
We define some formal moduli space of quasi-isogenies of isoclinic $p$-divisible groups with a non-reductive group as the "structure group". We then formulate new Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma conjectures for Bessel subgroups in the context of the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. Some (very limited) evidence is presented.
This is a brief exposition of the mathematical themes that motivate the special programme at the Newton Institute in 2009. It is mostly intended for the general public having mathematical training up to the level of secondary school.
We prove a character formula for some closed fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We apply it to compute fixed points for fine Deligne-Lusztig varieties arising from the basic loci of Shimura varieties of Coxeter type. As an application, we prove an arithmetic intersection formula for certain diagonal cycles on unitary and GSpin Rapoport-Zink spaces arising from the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. In particular, we prove the arithmetic fundamental lemma in the minuscule case, without assumptions on the residual characteristic.
We examine closed geodesics in the quotient of hyperbolic three space by the discrete group of isometries SL(2,Z[i]). There is a correspondence between closed geodesics in the manifold, the complex continued fractions originally studied by Hurwitz, and binary quadratic forms over the Gaussian integers. According to this correspondence, a geodesic is called fundamental if the associated binary quadratic form is. Using techniques from sieve theory, symbolic dynamics, and the theory of expander graphs, we show the existence of a compact set in the manifold containing infinitely many fundamental g…
Our main goal in the present article is to explain how one can reconstruct the decomposition subgroups and norms of points on an arithmetic curve inside its fundamental group if the following data are given: the fundamental group, a part of the cyclotomic character and the family of the regulators of the fields corresponding to the generic points of all étale covers of the given curve. The approach is inspired by that of Tamagawa for curves over finite fields but uses Tsfasman-Vlăduţ theorem instead of Lefschetz trace formula. To the authors' knowledge, this is a new technique in the anabelian…
Let $p$ be a prime number. Let $X/E$ be a geometrically connected, smooth, quasi-projective variety over a finite extension $E/\mathbb{Q}_p$. In this paper I demonstrate the existence of isomorphs of the tempered (and hence also étale) fundamental group of $X/E$ which are labeled by distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures, just as isomorphs of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface $Σ$ may be labeled by Riemann surfaces (i.e. complex holomorphic structures) $Σ'$ in the Teichmuller space of $Σ$. This is the starting point of the theory elaborated in [Joshi, 2021a,b,c, 2022] for which thi…
We establish a valuative version of Grothendieck's section conjecture for curves over p-adic local fields. The image of every section is contained in the decomposition subgroup of a valuation which prolongs the p-adic valuation to the function field of the curve.
We prove a variant of the Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma conjecture of Wei Zhang for n=2. More precisely, we consider the deformation lengths of certain quasi-homomorphisms of quasi-canonical lifts in the sense of Gross. We prove the existence of a test function on a symmetric space related to GL_2 whose orbital integrals over GL_1 equal the deformation lengths in question.
Given a smooth and separated K(pi,1) variety X over a field k, we associate a "cycle class" in etale cohomology with compact supports to any continuous section of the natural map from the arithmetic fundamental group of X to the absolute Galois group of k. We discuss the algebraicity of this class in the case of curves over p-adic fields, and deduce in particular a new proof of Stix's theorem according to which the index of a curve X over a p-adic field k must be a power of p as soon as the natural map from the arithmetic fundamental group of X to the absolute Galois group of k admits a sectio…
The arithmetic fundamental lemma conjecture of the third author connects the derivative of an orbital integral on a symmetric space with an intersection number on a formal moduli space of $p$-divisible groups of Picard type. It arises in the relative trace formula approach to the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture. We prove this conjecture in the minuscule case.
By Grothendieck's anabelian conjectures, Galois representations landing in outer automorphism group of the algebraic fundamental group which are associated to hyperbolic smooth curves defined over number-fields encode all the arithmetic information of these curves. The Goal of this paper is to develop an arithmetic Teichmuller theory, by which we mean, introducing arithmetic objects summarizing the arithmetic information coming from all curves of the same topological type defined over number-fields. We also introduce Hecke-Teichmuller Lie algebra which plays the role of Hecke algebra in the an…
In this paper we will give a scheme-theoretic discussion on the unramified extensions of an arithmetic function field in several variables. The notion of unramified discussed here is parallel to that in algebraic number theory and for the case of classical varieties, coincides with that in Lang's theory of unramified class fields of a function field in several variables. It is twofold for us to introduce the notion of unramified. One is for the computation of the étale fundamental group of an arithmetic scheme; the other is for an ideal-theoretic theory of unramified class fields over an arith…
Let $X$ be a proper, smooth, and geometrically connected curve of genus $g(X)\ge 1$ over a $p$-adic local field. We prove that there exists an effectively computable open affine subscheme $U\subset X$ with the property that $period (X)=1$, and $index (X)$ equals $1$ or $2$ (resp. $period(X)=index (X)=1$, assuming $period (X)=index (X)$), if (resp. if and only if) the exact sequence of the geometrically abelian fundamental group of $U$ splits. We compute the torsor of splittings of the exact sequence of the geometrically abelian absolute Galois group associated to $X$, and give a new characteri…
Arithmetic Kleinian groups are arithmetic lattices in PSL_2(C). We present an algorithm which, given such a group Gamma, returns a fundamental domain and a finite presentation for Gamma with a computable isomorphism.
In [Tha15], we looked at two (`multiplicative' and `Carlitz-Drinfeld additive') analogs each, for the well-known basic congruences of Fermat and Wilson, in the case of polynomials over finite fields. When we look at them modulo higher powers of primes, i.e. at `supercongruences', we find interesting relations linking them together, as well as linking them with arithmetic derivatives and zeta values. In the current work, we expand on the first analog and connections with arithmetic derivatives more systematically, giving many more equivalent conditions linking the two, now using `mixed derivati…
As a sequel to our proof of the analog of Serre's conjecture for function fields in Part I of this work, we study in this paper the deformation rings of $n$-dimensional mod $\ell$ representations $ρ$ of the arithmetic fundamental group $π_1(X)$ where $X$ is a geometrically irreducible, smooth curve over a finite field $k$ of characteristic $p$ ($\neq \ell$). We are able to show in many cases that the resulting rings are finite flat over $\BZ_\ell$. The proof principally uses a lifting result of the authors in Part I of this two-part work, Taylor-Wiles systems and the result of Lafforgue. This …
We define a group stucture on the primitive integer points (A,B,C) of the algebraic variety Q_0(B,C)=A^n, where Q_0 is the principal binary quadratic form of fundamental discriminant Δand n is a fixed integer greater than 1. A surjective homomorphism is given from this group to the $n$-torsion subgroup of the narrow ideal class group of the quadratic number field Q(\sqrtΔ).
Let k be a global field, p an odd prime number different from char(k) and S, T disjoint, finite sets of primes of k. Let G_S^T(k)(p)=Gal(k_S^T(p)|k) be the Galois group of the maximal p-extension of k which is unramified outside S and completely split at T. We prove the existence of a finite set of primes S_0, which can be chosen disjoint from any given set M of Dirichlet density zero, such that the cohomology of G_{S\cup S_0}^T(k)(p) coincides with the etale cohomology of the associated marked arithmetic curve. In particular, cd G_{S\cup S_0}^T(k)(p)=2. Furthermore, we can choose S_0 in such …
In this paper we introduce the local Nori fundamental group scheme of a reduced scheme or algebraic stack over a perfect field $k$. We give particular attention to the case of fields: to any field extension $K/k$ we attach a pro-local group scheme over $k$. We show how this group has many analogies, but also some crucial differences, with the absolute Galois group. We propose two conjectures, analogous to the classical Neukirch-Uchida Theorem and Abhyankar Conjecture, providing some evidence in their favor. Finally we show that the local fundamental group of a normal variety is a quotient of t…
Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.
We formulate for function fields an analog of Serre's conjecture on the modularity of 2-dimensional irreducible mod l representations of the absolute Galois group of Q: our analog is not restricted to 2-dimensional represntations. While the original conjecture of Serre is wide open at the moment, in this paper we prove the function field analog of Serre's conjecture only assuming largeness of image of the representation and some assumptions on the ramification of the representation (for example if the mod l representation is unramified and has full image, l is odd and the dimension and charact…
In this paper we generalize an argument of Neukirch from birational anabelian geometry to the case of arithmetic curves. In contrast to the function field case, it seems to be more complicate to describe the position of decomposition groups of points at the boundary of the scheme $\Spec \caO_{K,S}$, where $K$ is a number field and $S$ a set of primes of $K$, intrinsically in terms of the fundamental group. We prove that it is equivalent to give the following pieces of information additionally with the fundamental group $π_1(\Spec \caO_{K,S})$: the location of decomposition groups of boundary p…
Let $X$ be a normal algebraic variety over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic zero, and let $\ell$ be a prime. Say that a continuous $\ell$-adic representation $ρ$ of $π_1^{\text{ét}}(X_{\bar k})$ is arithmetic if there exists a representation $\tilde ρ$ of a finite index subgroup of $π_1^{\text{ét}}(X)$, with $ρ$ a subquotient of $\tildeρ|_{π_1(X_{\bar k})}$. We show that there exists an integer $N=N(X, \ell)$ such that every nontrivial, semisimple arithmetic representation of $π_1^{\text{ét}}(X_{\bar k})$ is nontrivial mod $\ell^N$. As a corollary, we prove that any nontrivial …
Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, conne…
We construct a singular homology theory on the category of schemes of finite type over a Dedekind domain and verify several basic properties. For arithmetic schemes we construct a reciprocity isomorphism between the integral singular homology in degree zero and the abelianized modified tame fundamental group.
One of the main themes in this thesis is the description of the signature of both the infinite place and the finite places in cubic function fields of any characteristic and quartic function fields of characteristic at least 5. For these purposes, we provide a new theory which can be applied to cubic and quartic function fields and to even higher dimensional function fields. One of the striking advantages of this theory to other existing methods is that is does not use the concept of p-adic completions and we can dispense of Cardano's formulae. Another key result comprises the construction of …

The notion of a tamely ramified covering is canonical only for curves. Several notions of tameness for coverings of higher dimensional schemes have been used in the literature. We show that all these definitions are essentially equivalent. Furthermore, we prove finiteness theorems for the tame fundamental groups of arithmetic schemes.
In this paper, we would like to propose a fundamental question about a higher dimensional analogue of Dirichlet's unit theorem. We also give a partial answer to the question as an application of the arithmetic Hodge index theorem.
There are a number of fundamental results in the study of holomorphic function theory associated to the discrete group PSL(2,Z) including the following statements: The ring of holomorphic modular forms is generated by the holomorphic Eisenstein series of weight four and six; the smallest weight cusp form Delta has weight twelve and can be written as a polynomial in E4 and E6; and the Hauptmodul j can be written as a multiple of E4 cubed divided by Delta. The goal of the present article is to seek generalizations of these results to some other genus zero arithmetic groups, namely those generate…
Let $K$ be a number field. We present several new finiteness results for isomorphism classes of abelian varieties over $K$ whose $\ell$-power torsion fields are arithmetically constrained for some rational prime $\ell$. Such arithmetic constraints are related to an unresolved question of Ihara regarding the kernel of the canonical outer Galois representation on the pro-$\ell$ fundamental group of $P^1 - \{0,1,\infty\}$. Under GRH, we demonstrate the set of classes is finite for any fixed $K$ and any fixed dimension. Without GRH, we prove a semistable version of the result. In addition, several…
The concept of weights on the cohomology of algebraic varieties was initiated by fundamental ideas and work of A. Grothendieck and P. Deligne. It is deeply connected with the concept of motives and appeared first on the singular cohomology as the weights of (possibly mixed) Hodge structures and on the etale cohomology as the weights of eigenvalues of Frobenius. But weights also appear on algebraic fundamental groups and in p-adic Hodge theory, where they become only visible after applying the comparison functors of Fontaine. After rehearsing various versions of weights, we explain some more re…
We prove structure theorems for the moduli stack of elliptic curves equipped with $G$-structures, where $G$ is a finite 2-generated metabelian group. In particular, we show that if $G$ has exponent $e$, then there is a subgroup $H\le GL_2(\mathbb{Z}/e)$ such that $G$-structures on elliptic curves $E$ are equivalent to "congruence structures of level $H$". Our methods are almost entirely group theoretic. Let $\widehat{M}$ denote the free profinite metabelian group of rank 2, then along the way we prove a decomposition of $Out(\widehat{M})$ as an internal semi-direct product of the subgroup of "…
In one of the fundamental results of Arakelov's arithmetic intersection theory, Faltings and Hriljac (independently) proved the Hodge Index Theorem for arithmetic surfaces by relating the intersection pairing to the negative of the Néron-Tate height pairing. More recently, Moriwaki and Yuan-Zhang generalized this to higher dimension. In this work, we extend these results to projective varieties over transcendence degree one function fields. The new challenge is dealing with non-constant but numerically trivial line bundles coming from the constant field via Chow's $K/k$-trace functor. As an ap…
We apply G. Prasad's volume formula for the arithmetic quotients of semi-simple groups and Bruhat-Tits theory to study the covolumes of arithmetic subgroups of SO(1,n). As a result we prove that for any even dimension n there exists a unique compact arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifold of the smallest volume. We give a formula for the Euler-Poincare characteristic of the orbifolds and present an explicit description of their fundamental groups as the stabilizers of certain lattices in quadratic spaces. We also study hyperbolic 4-manifolds defined arithmetically and obtain a number theoretical char…
