We apply G. Prasad's volume formula for the arithmetic quotients of semi-simple groups and Bruhat-Tits theory to study the covolumes of arithmetic subgroups of SO(1,n). As a result we prove that for any even dimension n there exists a unique compact arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifold of the smallest volume. We give a formula for the Euler-Poincare characteristic of the orbifolds and present an explicit description of their fundamental groups as the stabilizers of certain lattices in quadratic spaces. We also study hyperbolic 4-manifolds defined arithmetically and obtain a number theoretical characterization of the smallest compact arithmetic 4-manifold.
There are errors in the proof of the uniqueness of arithmetic subgroups of the smallest covolume. In this note we correct the proof, obtain certain results which were stated as a conjecture, and we give several remarks on further developments.
Carmichael quotients for an integer $m\ge 2$ are introduced analogous to Fermat quotients, by using Carmichael function $λ(m)$. Various properties of these new quotients are investigated, such as basic arithmetic properties, sequences derived from Carmichael quotients, Carmichael-Wieferich numbers, and so on. Finally, we link Carmichael quotients to perfect nonlinear functions.
We determine the minimal volume of arithmetic hyperbolic orientable n-dimensional orbifolds (compact and non-compact) for every odd dimension n>3. Combined with the previously known results it solves the minimal volume problem for arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifolds in all dimensions.
We discuss certain Eisenstein series on arithmetic quotients of loop groups, G^, which are associated to cusp forms on finite-dimensional groups associated with maximal parabolics of G^.
In this paper, we describe the asymptotic distribution of Hecke eigenvalues in the Laplace eigenvalue aspect for certain families of Hecke-Maass forms on compact arithmetic quotients. Instead of relying on the trace formula, which was the primary tool in preceding studies on the subject, we use Fourier integral operator methods. This allows us to treat not only spherical, but also non-spherical Hecke-Maass forms with corresponding remainder estimates. Our asymptotic formulas are available for arbitrary simple and connected algebraic groups over number fields with cocompact arithmetic subgroups…
In this paper, we will study the arithmetic of the Eisenstein part of the modular Jacobians. In the first section, we introduce some general preliminaries of the arithmetic theory of modular curves that we will need later. In the second section, we give an example of modular abelian varieties due to Gross and study its properties in some details. In the third section, we define Eisenstein quotients of the modular Jacobians in general and give a criterion of the non-triviality of Heegner points on such Eisenstein quotients. The last two sections return to the concrete examples when the level of…
In this paper, we partially extend recent results of Wan concerning the relationship between the zeta functions of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface and its (singular) mirror variety.
We explicitly calculate an arithmetic adelic quotient group for a locally free sheaf on an arithmetic surface when the fiber over the infinite point of the base is taken into account. The calculations are presented via a short exact sequence. We relate the last term of this short exact sequence with the projective limit of groups which are finite direct products of copies of one-dimensional real torus and are connected with first cohomology groups of locally free sheaves on the arithmetic surface.
Let $H$ be a semisimple algebraic group, $K$ a maximal compact subgroup of $G:=H(\mathbb{R})$, and $Γ\subset H(\mathbb{Q})$ a congruence arithmetic subgroup. In this paper, we generalize existing subconvex bounds for Hecke-Maass forms on the locally symmetric space $Γ\backslash G/K$ to corresponding bounds on the arithmetic quotient $Γ\backslash G$ for cocompact lattices using the spectral function of an elliptic operator. The bounds obtained extend known subconvex bounds for automorphic forms to non-trivial $K$-types, yielding subconvex bounds for new classes of automorphic representations, a…
We extend Lax-Phillips' theorem on discreteness of pseudo-cuspforms, in the style of Colin de Verdi{è}re's use of the Friedrichs self-adjoint extension of a restriction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, as opposed to the use of semigroup methods. We use this to prove meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series in several $\mathbb{Q}$-rank one cases, again following Colin de Verdi{è}re, as opposed to the semigroup-oriented viewpoint of Lax-Phillips and W. Mueller.
We describe new arithmetic invariants for pairs of torus orbits on groups isogenous to an inner form of $\mathbf{PGL}_n$ over a number field. These invariants are constructed by studying the double quotient of a linear algebraic group by a maximal torus. Using the new invariants we significantly strengthen results towards the equidistribution of packets of periodic torus orbits on higher rank $S$-arithmetic quotients. Packets of periodic torus orbits are natural collections of torus orbits coming from a single adelic torus and are closely related to class groups of number fields. The distribut…
We compute the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of quotients of the Bruhat-Tits building of PGL(n) under the action of arithmetic groups arising from central division algebras over rational function fields of positive characteristic. We use this result to determine the structure of the quotient simplicial complex in certain cases.
A weak wild arithmetic quotient singularity arises from the quotient of a smooth arithmetic surface by a finite group action, where the inertia group of a point on a closed characteristic p fiber is a p-group acting with smallest possible ramification jump. In this paper, we give complete explicit resolutions of these singularities using deformation theory and valuation theory, taking a more local perspective than previous work has taken. Our descriptions answer several questions of Lorenzini. Along the way, we give a valuation-theoretic criterion for a normal snc-model of P^1 over a discretel…
We study the homology and the Borel-Moore homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}$ of a quotient (called arithmetic quotient) of the Bruhat-Tits building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ of a nonarchimedean local field of positive characteristic by an arithmetic subgroup (a special case of the general definition in Harder's article (Invent.\ Math.\ 42, 135-175 (1977)). We define an analogue of modular symbols in this context and show that the image of the canonical map from homology to Borel-Moore homology is contained in the sub $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space generated by the modular symbols. By definition, th…
Let F be a global field, and let S be a finite set of places of F containing all archimedean places. Consider the product X of the symmetric spaces and Bruhat-Tits buildings for PGL_d of the completions of F at archimedean and non-archimedean places in S, respectively. We construct compactifications of the quotient of X by S-arithmetic subgroups of PGL_d(F). The constructions make delicate use of reductive Borel-Serre spaces for archimedean places and polyhedral and seminorm compactifications at nonarchimedean places. We also briefly discuss a few potential applications of our compacifications…
Let $d \ge 1$. We study a subspace of the space of automorphic forms of $\mathrm{GL}_d$ over a global field of positive characteristic (or, a function field of a curve over a finite field). We fix a place $\infty$ of $F$, and we consider the subspace $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{St}}$ consisting of automorphic forms such that the local component at $\infty$ of the associated automorphic representation is the Steinberg representation (to be made precise in the text). We have two results. One theorem (Theorem 16) describes the constituents of $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{St}}$ as automorphic representation an…
We prove that various arithmetic quotients of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$ are Mordellic, in the sense that they have only finitely many rational points over any finitely generated field extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In the previously known case of compact hyperbolic complex surfaces, we give a new proof using their Albanese in conjunction with some key results of Faltings, but without appealing to the Shafarevich conjecture. In higher dimension, our methods allow us to solve an alternative of Ullmo and Yafaev. Our strongest result uses in addition Rogawski's theory and establishes the Mordell…
Let $K$ be the function field of a curve $C$ over a field $\mathbb{F}$ of either odd or zero characteristic. Following the work by Serre and Mason on $\mathrm{SL}_2$, we study the action of arithmetic subgroups of $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ on its corresponding Bruhat-Tits tree associated to a suitable completion of $K$. More precisely, we prove that the quotient graph "looks like a spider", in the sense that it is the union of a set of cuspidal rays (the "legs"), parametrized by an explicit Picard group, that are attached to a connected graph (the "body"). We use this description in order to describe t…
In this paper we study the systoles of arithmetic hyperbolic 2- and 3-manifolds. Our first result is the construction of infinitely many arithmetic hyperbolic 2- and 3-manifolds which are pairwise noncommensurable, all have the same systole, and whose volumes are explicitly bounded. Our second result fixes a positive number x and gives an upper bound for the least volume of an arithmetic hyperbolic 2- or 3-manifold whose systole is greater than x. We conclude by determining, for certain small values of x, the least volume of a principal arithmetic hyperbolic 2-manifold over Q or 3-manifold ove…
The aim of this paper is twofold. First we prove a theorem of extension of sections of a coherent subquotient of a hermitian vector bundle on a complex analytic space with control of the norms, without any of the smoothness assumptions that were needed in previously known analogous results. Then we show how to associate an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel function to a coherent sheaf on an arithmetic variety -- provided this coherent sheaf is a subquotient of a hermitian vector bundle -- and using the classical arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem and our extension theorem, we give the leading term of t…
This paper proves the volume of the arithmetic Okounkov body, constructed from a hermitian line bundle on an arithmetic variety by the author in a previous paper, is equal to the the volume of the hermitian line bundle up to a simple constant multiple. It is an improvement and simplification of the previous work.
Let Z{t} be the ring of arithmetic power series that converge on the complex open unit disc. A classical result of Harbater asserts that every finite group occurs as a Galois group over the quotient field of Z{t}. We strengthen this by showing that every finite split embedding problem over Q acquires a solution over this field. More generally, we solve all t-unramified finite split embedding problems over the quotient field of O{t}, where O is the ring of integers of an arbitrary number field K.
We investigate two arithmetic functions naturally occurring in the study of the Euler and Carmichael quotients. The functions are related to the frequency of vanishing of the Euler and Carmichael quotients. We obtain several results concerning the relations between these functions as well as their typical and extreme values.
We introduce the volume function for hermitian invertible sheaves on an arithmetic variety as an analogue of the geometric volume function. The main result of this paper is the continuity of the arithmetic volume function. As a consequence, we have the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel formula for a nef hermitian invertible sheaf. We also give another several applications, for example, a generalized Hodge index theorem, an arithmetic Bogomolov-Gieseker's inequality, etc.
Let $k$ be a field, let $G$ be a reductive group, and let $V$ be a linear representation of $G$. Let $V//G = Spec(Sym(V^*))^G$ denote the geometric quotient and let $π: V \to V//G$ denote the quotient map. Arithmetic invariant theory studies the map $π$ on the level of $k$-rational points. In this article, which is a continuation of the results of our earlier paper "Arithmetic invariant theory", we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a rational element of $V//G$ to lie in the image of $π$, assuming that generic stabilizers are abelian. We illustrate the various scenarios that can o…
In 2015 Cristian-Silviu Radu designed an algorithm to detect identities of a class studied by Ramanujan and Kolberg. This class includes the famous identities by Ramanujan which provide a witness to the divisibility properties of $p(5n+4),$ $p(7n+5)$. We give an implementation of this algorithm using Mathematica. The basic theory is first described, and an outline of the algorithm is briefly given, in order to describe the functionality and utility of our package. We thereafter give multiple examples of applications to recent work in partition theory. In many cases we have used our package to …
We show an arithmetic generalization of the recent work of Lazarsfeld-Mustata which uses Okounkov bodies to study linear series of line bundles. As applications, we derive a log-concavity inequality on volumes of arithmetic line bundles and an arithmetic Fujita approximation theorem for big line bundles.
We introduce the positive intersection product in Arakelov geometry and prove that the arithmetic volume function is continuously differentiable. As applications, we compute the distribution function of the asymptotic measure of a Hermitian line bundle and several other arithmetic invariants.
We introduce a new arithmetic invariant for hermitian line bundles on an arithmetic variety. We use this invariant to measure the variation of the volume function with respect to the metric. The main result of this paper is a generalized Hodge index theorem on arithmetic toric varieties.
Differential equations have arithmetic analogues in which derivatives are replaced by Fermat quotients; these analogues are called arithmetic differential equations and the present paper is concerned with the "linear" ones. The equations themselves were introduced in a previous paper. In the present paper we deal with the solutions of these equations as well as with the differential Galois groups attached to the solutions.
This paper is the sequel of the paper "Continuity of volumes on arithmetic varieties", in which we established the arithmetic volume function of smooth hermitian Q-invertible sheaves and proved its continuity. The continuity of the volume function has a lot of applications as treated in the paper as above. In this paper, we would like to consider its continuous extension over R.
We compute the arithmetic volumes of integral models of unitary Shimura curves. This establishes the base case of an inductive argument to compute the arithmetic volumes of unitary Shimura varieties of higher dimension, to appear in subsequent work of Bruinier and the author.
Let $S$ be a closed Shimura variety uniformized by the complex $n$-ball. The Hodge conjecture predicts that every Hodge class in $H^{2k} (S, \Q)$, $k=0, \ldots, n$, is algebraic. We show that this holds for all degree $k$ away from the neighborhood $]n/3, 2n/3[$ of the middle degree. We also address the Tate conjecture and the generalized form of the Hodge conjecture and extend most of our results to Shimura varieties associated to unitary groups of any signature. The proofs make use of the recent endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of classical groups by \cite{ArthurBook,…
We apply the theory of Borcherds products to calculate arithmetic volumes (heights) of Shimura varieties of orthogonal type up to contributions from very bad primes. The approach is analogous to the well-known computation of their geometric volume by induction, using special cycles. A functorial theory of integral models of toroidal compactifications of those varieties and a theory of arithmetic Chern classes of integral automorphic vector bundles with singular metrics are used. We obtain some evidence in the direction of Kudla's conjectures on relations of heights of special cycles on these v…
The main purpose of this paper is to give an explicit formula for the volumes of indefinite ternary lattices with square free discriminant. We also consider several examples of lattices, for which the fundamental domain is well-known and make sure the results obtained by our computation coincide with the known ones.
Given a perfect field $k$ with algebraic closure $\overline{k}$ and a variety $X$ over $\overline{k}$, the field of moduli of $X$ is the subfield of $\overline{k}$ of elements fixed by field automorphisms $γ\in\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{k}/k)$ such that the twist $X_γ$ is isomorphic to $X$. The field of moduli is contained in all subextensions $k\subset k'\subset\overline{k}$ such that $X$ descends to $k'$. In this paper we extend the formalism, and define the field of moduli when $k$ is not perfect. Furthermore, Dèbes and Emsalem identified a condition that ensures that a smooth curve is de…
Let $\mathcal{A}_g$ denote the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$. The arithmetic height, or arithmetic volume, of $\overline{\mathcal{A}}_g$, is defined to be the arithmetic degree of the metrized Hodge bundle $\overlineω_g$ on $\overline{\mathcal{A}}_g$. In 1999, Kühn proved a formula for the arithmetic volume of $\overline{\mathcal{A}}_1$ in terms of special values of the Riemann zeta function. In this article, we generalize his result to the case $g=2$.
We give a short proof of an idempotent relation formula for counting periodic points of endomorphisms defined over finite fields. The original proof of this result, due to Walton, uses formal manipulation of arithmetic zeta functions, whereas we deduce the result directly from a related theorem of Kani and Rosen.
In this paper we concentrate on the relations between the structure of small Galois groups, arithmetic of fields, Bloch-Kato conjecture, and Galois groups of maximal pro-$p$-quotients of absolute Galois groups.
We prove that the covolume of any quasi-arithmetic hyperbolic lattice (a notion that generalizes the definition of arithmetic subgroups) is a rational multiple of the covolume of an arithmetic subgroup. As a corollary, we obtain a good description for the shape of the volumes of most of the known hyperbolic n-manifolds with n>3.
We show the existence of group-theoretic sections of the "etale-by-geometrically abelian" quotient of the arithmetic fundamental group of hyperbolic curves over $p$-adic local fields relative to a proper and flat model which are non-geometric, i.e., which do not arise from rational points.
For a hermitian line bundle over an arithmetic variety, we construct a convex continuous function on the Okounkov body associated to the generic fibre of the line bundle. The integration of the continuous function gives the growth of the Euler characteristic of the hermitian line bundle. It is the global version of the recent work of Nystrom.
We study the $L^2$--cohomology of certain local systems on non-compact arithmetic ball quotients $X=Γ\backslash \B_n$, in particular vanishing and non--vanishing results. We also give generalizations to higher dimensional ball quotients and study the mixed Hodge structure on the sheaf cohomology of a local system with the $L^2$-cohomology contributing to the lowest weight part.
We show the existence of group-theoretic sections of certain geometrically pro-nilpotent by abelian arithmetic fundamental groups of hyperbolic curves over p-adic local fields which are non-geometric, i.e., which do not arise from rational points. Among these quotients is the geometrically metabelian arithmetic fundamental group.
Let $M = \mathbb{B}^2 / Γ$ be a smooth ball quotient of finite volume with first betti number $b_1(M)$ and let $\mathcal{E}(M) \ge 0$ be the number of cusps (i.e., topological ends) of $M$. We study the growth rates that are possible in towers of finite-sheeted coverings of $M$. In particular, $b_1$ and $\mathcal{E}$ have little to do with one another, in contrast with the well-understood cases of hyperbolic $2$- and $3$-manifolds. We also discuss growth of $b_1$ for congruence arithmetic lattices acting on $\mathbb{B}^2$ and $\mathbb{B}^3$. Along the way, we provide an explicit example of a l…
