As a sequel to our proof of the analog of Serre's conjecture for function fields in Part I of this work, we study in this paper the deformation rings of $n$-dimensional mod $\ell$ representations $ρ$ of the arithmetic fundamental group $π_1(X)$ where $X$ is a geometrically irreducible, smooth curve over a finite field $k$ of characteristic $p$ ($\neq \ell$). We are able to show in many cases that the resulting rings are finite flat over $\BZ_\ell$. The proof principally uses a lifting result of the authors in Part I of this two-part work, Taylor-Wiles systems and the result of Lafforgue. This implies a conjecture of A.J. ~de Jong for representations with coefficients in power series rings over finite fields of characteristic $\ell$, that have this mod $\ell$ representation as their reduction.
On July 26, 1995, at the University of California, Santa Cruz, a young Dutch mathematician by the name Aise Johan de Jong made a revolution in the study of the arithmetic, geometry and cohomology theory of varieties in positive or mixed characteristic. The talk he delivered, first in a series of three entitled "Dominating Varieties by Smooth Varieties", had a central theme: a systematic application of fibrations by nodal curves. Among the hundreds of awe struck members of the audience, participants of the American Mathematical Society Summer Research Institute on Algebraic Geometry, many recog…
We use twisted sheaves and their moduli spaces to study the Brauer group of a scheme. In particular, we (1) show how twisted methods can be efficiently used to re-prove the basic facts about the Brauer group and cohomological Brauer group (including Gabber's theorem that they coincide for a separated union of two affine schemes), (2) give a new proof of de Jong's period-index theorem for surfaces over algebraically closed fields, and (3) prove an analogous result for surfaces over finite fields. We also include a reduction of all period-index problems for Brauer groups of function fields over …
We present a conjectural formula describing the cokernel of the Albanese map of zero-cycles of smooth projective varieties $X$ over $p$-adic fields in terms of the Néron-Severi group and provide a proof under additional assumptions on an integral model of $X$. The proof depends on a non-degeneracy result of Brauer-Manin pairing due to Saito-Sato and on Gabber-de Jong's comparison result of cohomological- and Azumaya-Brauer groups. We will also mention the local-global problem of the Albanese-cokernel; the abelian group on the "local side" turns out to be a finite group.
We define a family of arithmetic zero cycles in the arithmetic Chow group of a modular curve X_0(N), for N>3 odd and squarefree, and identify the arithmetic degrees of these cycles as q-coefficients of the central derivative of a Siegel Eisenstein series of genus two. This parallels work of Kudla-Rapoport-Yang for Shimura curves.
We define and investigate extension groups in the context of Arakelov geometry. The 'arithmetic extension groups' we introduce are extensions by groups of analytic types of the usual extension groups attached to $Ø_X$-modules over an arithmetic scheme $X$. In this paper, we focus on the first arithmetic extension group - the elements of which may be described in terms of admissible short exact sequences of hermitian vector bundles over $X$ - and we especially consider the case when $X$ is an 'arithmetic curve', namely the spectrum $\Spec Ø_K$ of the ring of integers in some number field $K$. T…
The Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture relates two different invariants of a surjective endomorphism, the dynamical and arithmetic degrees. As the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture is only meaningful when a morphism has a Zariski dense orbit, it has no content for varieties with positive Kodaira dimension. A generalization of the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture which is meaningful in positive Kodaira dimension is the so called sAND conjecture, which involves the set of "small" arithmetic degrees. Kawaguchi and Silverman showed that a small arithmetic degree is the modulus of an eigenvalue of $f^*\colo…
We construct a singular homology theory on the category of schemes of finite type over a Dedekind domain and verify several basic properties. For arithmetic schemes we construct a reciprocity isomorphism between the integral singular homology in degree zero and the abelianized modified tame fundamental group.
For an Anderson A-motive over a discretely valued field whose residue field has A-characteristic ε, we prove a criterion for good reduction in terms of its associated local shtuka at ε. This yields a criterion for good reduction of Drinfeld modules. Our criterion is the function-field analog of Grothendieck's and de Jong's criterion for good reduction of an abelian variety over a discretely valued field with residue characteristic p in terms of its associated p-divisible group.
We define some formal moduli space of quasi-isogenies of isoclinic $p$-divisible groups with a non-reductive group as the "structure group". We then formulate new Arithmetic Fundamental Lemma conjectures for Bessel subgroups in the context of the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures. Some (very limited) evidence is presented.
In the relative trace formula approach to the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture, we formulate a local conjecture (arithmetic transfer) in the case of an exotic smooth formal moduli space of p-divisible groups, associated to a unitary group relative to a ramified quadratic extension of a p-adic field. We prove our conjecture in the case of a unitary group in three variables.
We define variants of PEL type of the Shimura varieties that appear in the context of the Arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture. We formulate for them a version of the AGGP conjecture. We also construct (global and semi-global) integral models of these Shimura varieties and formulate for them conjectures on arithmetic intersection numbers. We prove some of these conjectures in low dimension.
In this paper, we prove an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors and arithmetic CM cycles in a Hilbert modular surface over $\mathbb Z$. As applications, we obtain the first `non-abelian' Chowla-Selberg formula, which is a special case of Colmez's conjecture; an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Humbert surfaces and CM cycles in the arithmetic Siegel modular variety of genus two; Lauter's conjecture about the denominators of CM values of Igusa invariants; and a result about bad reductions of CM genus two curves.
In this paper we consider certain families of arithmetic subgroups of SO^0(p,q) and SL_3(R), respectively. We study the cohomology of such arithmetic groups with coefficients in arithmetically defined modules. We show that for natural sequences of such modules the torsion in the cohomology grows exponentially.
A formalism of arithmetic partial differential equations (PDEs) is being developed in which one considers several arithmetic differentiations at one fixed prime. In this theory solutions can be defined in algebraically closed p-adic fields. As an application we show that for at least two arithmetic directions every elliptic curve possesses a non-zero arithmetic PDE Manin map of order 1; such maps do not exist in the arithmetic ODE case. Similarly we construct and study "genuinely PDE" differential modular forms. As further applications we derive a Theorem of the Kernel and a Reciprocity Theore…
I show that a trivial modification of a standard proof of the Roth's Theorem on triples in arithmetic progression would lead to the following Theorem: If A is a "large set" that is its elements are monotone increasing integers and the sum of reciprocals of its elements diverges then the sequence contains an arithmetic progression of length three.
The cuspidal cohomology groups of arithmetic groups in certain infinite dimensional Modules are computed. As a result we get a simultaneous generalization of the Patterson-Conjecture and the Lewis-Correspondence.
We consider the reduction of an elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers modulo primes in a given arithmetic progression and investigate how often the subgroup of rational points of this reduced curve is cyclic as a special case of Serre's Cyclicity Conjecture.
Fix coprime natural numbers $a,q$. Assuming the Prime $k$-tuple Conjecture, we show that there exist arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of Carmichael numbers, each of which lies in the reduced residue class $a$ mod $q$ and is a product of three distinct prime numbers.
The second author has recently introduced a new class of L-series in the arithmetic theory of function fields over finite fields. We show that the value at one of these L-series encode arithmetic informations of certain Drinfeld modules defined over Tate algebras. This enables us to generalize Anderson's log-algebraicity Theorem and Taelman's Herbrand-Ribet Theorem.
Higher order cohomology of arithmetic groups is expressed in terms of (g,K)-cohomology. Generalizing results of Borel, it is shown that the latter can be computed using functions of (uniform) moderate growth. A higher order versions of Borel's conjecture is stated, asserting that the cohomology can be computed using automorphic forms.
A classical problem in number theory is showing that the mean value of an arithmetic function is asymptotic to its mean value over a short interval or over an arithmetic progression, with the interval as short as possible or the modulus as large as possible. We study this problem in the function field setting, and prove for a wide class of arithmetic functions (namely factorization functions), that such an asymptotic result holds, allowing the size of the short interval to be as small as a square-root of the size of the full interval, and analogously for arithmetic progressions. For instance, …
We consider weighted averages of the number of representations of an even integer as a sum of two prime numbers, where each summand lies in a given arithmetic progression modulo a common integer $q$. Our result is uniform in a suitable range for $q$.
We study the $Λ$-module structure of the ordinary parts of the arithmetic cohomology groups of modular Jacobians made out of various towers of modular curves. We prove that the ordinary parts of $Λ$-adic Selmer groups coming from two different towers have "almost same" $Λ$-module structures. We also prove the cotorsionness of $Λ$-adic Tate-Shafarevich group under mild assumptions.
We study the arithmetic of division fields of semistable abelian varieties A over the rationals. The Galois group of the 2-division field of A is analyzed when the conductor is odd and squarefree. The irreducible semistable mod 2 representations of small conductor are determined under GRH. These results are used in "Paramodular abelian varieties of odd conductor," arXiv:1004.4699.
We investigate the question of which growth rates are possible for the number of periodic points of a compact group automorphism. Our arguments involve a modification of Linnik's Theorem, concerning small prime numbers in arithmetic progressions which lie in intervals.
Minhyong Kim introduced arithmetic Chern-Simons invariants for totally imaginary number fields as arithmetic analogues of the Chern-Simons invariants for 3-manifolds. In this paper, we extend Kim's definition for any number field, by using the modified étale cohomology groups and fundamental groups which take real places into account. We then show explicit formulas of mod 2 arithmetic Dijkgraaf-Witten invariants for real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{p_1 p_2 \cdots p_r})$, where $p_i$ is a prime number congruent to 1 mod 4, in terms of the Legendre symbols of $p_i$'s. We also show topolo…
