We examine closed geodesics in the quotient of hyperbolic three space by the discrete group of isometries SL(2,Z[i]). There is a correspondence between closed geodesics in the manifold, the complex continued fractions originally studied by Hurwitz, and binary quadratic forms over the Gaussian integers. According to this correspondence, a geodesic is called fundamental if the associated binary quadratic form is. Using techniques from sieve theory, symbolic dynamics, and the theory of expander graphs, we show the existence of a compact set in the manifold containing infinitely many fundamental geodesics.

A closed geodesic on the modular surface is "low-lying" if it does not travel "high" into the cusp. It is "fundamental" if it corresponds to an element in the class group of a real quadratic field. We prove the existence of infinitely many low-lying fundamental geodesics, answering a question of Einsiedler-Lindenstrauss-Michel-Venkatesh.
In this paper we examine the relationship between the length spectrum and the geometric genus spectrum of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold M. In particular we analyze the extent to which the geometry of M is determined by the closed geodesics coming from finite area totally geodesic surfaces. Using a variety of techniques from analytic number theory, we address the following problems: Is the commensurability class of an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold determined by the lengths of closed geodesics lying on totally geodesic surfaces?, Do there exist arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds whose "s…
Given a closed geodesic on a compact arithmetic hyperbolic surface, we show the existence of a sequence of Laplacian eigenfunctions whose integrals along the geodesic exhibit nontrivial growth. Via Waldspurger's formula we deduce a lower bound for central values of Rankin--Selberg L-functions of Maass forms times theta series associated to real quadratic fields.
We determine the variance for the fluctuations of the arithmetic measures obtained by collecting all closed geodesics on the modular surface with the same discriminant and ordering them by the latter. This arithmetic variance differs by subtle factors from the variance that one gets when considering individual closed geodesics when ordered by their length. The arithmetic variance is the same one that appears in the fluctuations of measures associated with quantum states on the modular surface.
Let X be an arithmetic hyperbolic surface, ψa Hecke-Maass form, and l a geodesic segment on X. We obtain a power saving over the local bound of Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov for the L^2 norm of ψrestricted to l, by extending the technique of arithmetic amplification developed by Iwaniec and Sarnak. We also improve the local bounds for various Fourier coefficients of ψalong l.
We introduce the notion of weak commensurabilty of arithmetic subgroups and relate it to the length equivalence and isospectrality of locally symmetric spaces. We prove many strong consequences of weak commensurabilty and derive from these many interesting results about isolength and isospectral locally symmetric spaces.
In this paper we show that totally geodesic subspaces determine the commensurability class of a standard arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-orbifold, $n\ge 4$. Many of the results are more general and apply to locally symmetric spaces associated to arithmetic lattices in $\mathbb{R}$-simple Lie groups of type $B_n$ and $D_n$. We use a combination of techniques from algebraic groups and quadratic forms to prove several results about these spaces.
While Random Matrix Theory has successfully modeled many quantities of families of L-functions, it frequently cannot see the family's arithmetic. In some situations this requires an extended theory that inserts arithmetic factors depending on the family, while in other cases these factors result in contributions which vanish in the limit, and are thus not detected. We review the general theory associated to one of the most important statistics, the n-level density of zeros near the central point. According to the Katz-Sarnak density conjecture, to each family of L-functions there is a correspo…
We asymptotically estimate the variance of the number of lattice points in a thin, randomly rotated annulus lying on the surface of the sphere. This partially resolves a conjecture of Bourgain, Rudnick, and Sarnak. We also obtain estimates that are valid for all balls and annuli that are not too small. Our results have several consequences: for a conjecture of Linnik on sums of two squares and a "microsquare", a conjecture of Bourgain and Rudnick on the number of lattice points lying in small balls on the surface of the sphere, the covering radius of the sphere, and the distribution of lattice…
One of the most important statistics in studying the zeros of L-functions is the 1-level density, which measures the concentration of zeros near the central point. Fouvry and Iwaniec [FI] proved that the 1-level density for L-functions attached to imaginary quadratic fields agrees with results predicted by random matrix theory. In this paper, we show a similar agreement with random matrix theory occurring in more general sequences of number fields. We first show that the main term agrees with random matrix theory, and similar to all other families studied to date, is independent of the arithme…
In this article, we study geometric aspects of semi-arithmetic Riemann surfaces by means of number theory and hyperbolic geometry. First, we show the existence of infinitely many semi-arithmetic Riemann surfaces of various shapes and prove that their systoles are dense in the positive real numbers. Furthermore, this leads to a construction, for each genus $g \geq 2,$ of infinite families of semi-arithmetic surfaces with pairwise distinct invariant trace fields, giving a negative answer to a conjecture of B. Jeon. Finally, for any semi-arithmetic surface we find a sequence of congruence coverin…
We prove the existence of infinitely many low-lying and fundamental closed geodesics on the modular surface which are reciprocal, that is, invariant under time reversal. The method combines ideas from Parts I and II of this series, namely the dispersion method in bilinear forms, as applied to thin semigroups coming from restricted continued fractions.
Let $F$ and $G$ be Siegel cusp forms for $\Sp_4(\Z)$ and weights $k_1, k_2$ respectively. Also let $F$ and $G$ be Hecke eigenforms lying in distinct eigen spaces. Further suppose that neither $F$ nor $G$ is a Saito-Kurokawa lift. In this article, we study simultaneous arithmetic behaviour of Hecke eigenvalues of these Hecke eigenforms.
For $n \ge 2$, we prove that a finite volume complex hyperbolic $n$-manifold containing infinitely many maximal properly immersed totally geodesic submanifolds of dimension at least two is arithmetic, paralleling our previous work for real hyperbolic manifolds. As in the real hyperbolic case, our primary result is a superrigidity theorem for certain representations of complex hyperbolic lattices. The proof requires developing new general tools not needed in the real hyperbolic case. Our main results also have a number of other applications. For example, we prove nonexistence of certain maps be…
In 1992, Reid asked whether hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same geodesic length spectra are necessarily commensurable. While this is known to be true for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the non-arithmetic case is still open. Building towards a negative answer to this question, Futer and Millichap recently constructed infinitely many pairs of non-commensurable, non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have the same volume and whose length spectra begin with the same first $m$ geodesic lengths. In the present paper, we show that this phenomenon is surprisingly common in the arithmetic set…
In this paper, we deal with the conjecture of 'Quantum Unique Ergodicity'. Z. Rudnick and P. Sarnak showed that there is no 'strong scarring' on closed geodesics for arithmetic congruence surfaces derived from a quaternion division algebra. We extend this result to a class of three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds X=Gamma\H^3 that are again derived from quaternion division algebras. We show that there is no 'strong scarring' on closed geodesics or on Gamma-closed imbedded totally geodesics surfaces of X.
The geodesic length spectrum of a complete, finite volume, hyperbolic 3-orbifold M is a fundamental invariant of the topology of M via Mostow-Prasad Rigidity. Motivated by this, the second author and Reid defined a two-dimensional analogue of the geodesic length spectrum given by the multiset of isometry types of totally geodesic, immersed, finite-area surfaces of M called the geometric genus spectrum. They showed that if $M$ is arithmetic and contains a totally geodesic surface, then the geometric genus spectrum of M determines its commensurability class. In this paper we define a coarser inv…
In this paper we prove that there is a direct relationship between Salem numbers and translation lengths of hyperbolic elements of arithmetic hyperbolic groups that are determined by a quadratic form over a totally real number field. As an application we determine a sharp lower bound for the length of a closed geodesic in a noncompact arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifold for each dimension n. We also discuss a "short geodesic conjecture", and prove its equivalence with "Lehmer's conjecture" for Salem numbers.
We give an introduction to adelic mixing and its applications for mathematicians knowing about the mixing of the geodesic flow on hyperbolic surfaces. We focus on the example of the Hecke trees in the modular surface.
It is known that there is a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes of primitive indefinite binary quadratic forms and primitive hyperbolic conjugacy classes of the modular group. Due to such a correspondence, Sarnak obtained the asymptotic formula for the class number sum in order of the fundamental unit by using the prime geodesic theorem for the modular group. In the present paper, we propose asymptotic formulas of the class number sums over discriminants in arithmetic progressions. Since there are relations between the arithmetic properties of the discriminants and the conjug…
In this paper we examine the geometry of minimal surfaces of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In particular, we give bounds on the totally geodesic 2-systole, construct infinitely many incommensurable manifolds with the same initial geometric genus spectrum in which volume and 1-systole are controlled, and analyze the growth of the genera of minimal surfaces across commensurability classes. These results have applications to the study of how Heegard genus grows across commensurability classes.
It is known that the lengths of closed geodesics of an arithmetic hyperbolic orbifold are related to Salem numbers. We initiate a quantitative study of this phenomenon. We show that any non-compact arithmetic $3$-dimensional orbifold defines $c Q^{1/2} + O(Q^{1/4})$ square-rootable Salem numbers of degree $4$ which are less than or equal to $Q$. This quantity can be compared to the total number of such Salem numbers, which is shown to be asymptotic to $\frac{4}{3}Q^{3/2}+O(Q)$. Assuming the gap conjecture of Marklof, we can extend these results to compact arithmetic $3$-orbifolds. As an applic…
This paper gives a complete parametrization of the commensurability classes of totally geodesic subspaces of irreducible arithmetic quotients of $X_{a, b} = (\mathbf{H}^2)^a \times (\mathbf{H}^3)^b$. A special case describes all Shimura subvarieties of type $\mathrm{A}_1$ Shimura varieties. We produce, for any $n\geq 1$, examples of manifolds/Shimura varieties with precisely $n$ commensurability classes of totally geodesic submanifolds/Shimura subvarieties. This is in stark contrast with the previously studied cases of arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-manifolds and quaternionic Shimura surfaces, wher…
We show that the shape of a complex cubic field lies on the geodesic of the modular surface defined by the field's trace-zero form. We also prove a general such statement for all orders in étale Q-algebras. Applying a method of Manjul Bhargava and Piper H to results of Bhargava and Ariel Shnidman, we prove that the shapes lying on a fixed geodesic become equidistributed with respect to the hyperbolic measure as the discriminant of the complex cubic field goes to infinity. We also show that the shape of a complex cubic field is a complete invariant (within the family of all cubic fields).
The Katz-Sarnak philosophy predicts that statistics of zeros of families of L-functions are strikingly universal. However, subtle arithmetical differences between families of the same symmetry type can be detected by calculating lower-order terms of the statistics of interest. In this paper we calculate lower-order terms of the 1-level density of some families of elliptic curves. We show that there are essentially two different effects on the distribution of low-lying zeros. First, low-lying zeros are more numerous in families of elliptic curves E with relatively large numbers of points (mod p…

Gauss' classical reduction theory for indefinite binary quadratic forms over $\mathbb{Z}$ has originally been proven by means of purely algebraic and arithmetic considerations. It was later discovered that this reduction theory is closely related to a certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on the modular surface, and hence can also be deduced geometrically. In this article, we use certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on Hecke triangle surfaces (also the non-arithmetic ones) to develop reduction theories for the indefinite binary quadratic forms associated to Hecke triangle …
Given a family of (almost) disjoint strictly convex subsets of a complete negatively curved Riemannian manifold M, such as balls, horoballs, tubular neighborhoods of totally geodesic submanifolds, etc, the aim of this paper is to construct geodesic rays or lines in M which have exactly once an exactly prescribed (big enough) penetration in one of them, and otherwise avoid (or do not enter too much in) them. Several applications are given, including a definite improvement of the unclouding problem of [PP1], the prescription of heights of geodesic lines in a finite volume such M, or of spiraling…
This note is an elaboration of the ideas and intuitions of Grothendieck and Weil concerning the "arithmetic topology". Given 3-dimensional manifold M fibering over the circle we introduce an real quadratic number field K with discriminant d, where d>0 is an integer number uniquely determined by M. The idea is to relate geometry of M to the arithmetic of field K. On this way, we show that Vol M is a limit density of ideals of given norm in the field K (Dirichlet density). The second statement says that the number of cusp points of manifold M is equal to the class number of the field K. It is re…
We show that special cycles generate a large part of the cohomology of locally symmetric spaces associated to orthogonal groups. We prove in particular that classes of totally geodesic submanifolds generate the cohomology groups of degree $n$ of compact congruence $p$-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds "of simple type" as long as $n$ is strictly smaller than $\frac{p}{3}$. We also prove that for connected Shimura varieties associated to $\OO (p,2)$ the Hodge conjecture is true for classes of degree $< \frac{p+1}{3}$. The proof of our general theorem makes use of the recent endoscopic classificat…
Our main result is that for all sufficiently large $x_0>0$, the set of commensurability classes of arithmetic hyperbolic 2- or 3-orbifolds with fixed invariant trace field $k$ and systole bounded below by $x_0$ has density one within the set of all commensurability classes of arithmetic hyperbolic 2- or 3-orbifolds with invariant trace field $k$. The proof relies upon bounds for the absolute logarithmic Weil height of algebraic integers due to Silverman, Brindza and Hajdu, as well as precise estimates for the number of rational quaternion algebras not admitting embeddings of any quadratic fiel…
This paper is the next installment of our analysis of length-commensurable locally symmetric spaces begun in Publ. math. IHES 109(2009), 113-184. For a Riemannian manifold $M$, we let $L(M)$ be the weak length spectrum of $M$, i.e. the set of lengths of all closed geodesics in $M$, and let $\mathcal{F}(M)$ denote the subfield of $\mathbb{R}$ generated by $L(M)$. Let now $M_i$ be an arithmetically defined locally symmetric space associated with a simple algebraic $\mathbb{R}$-group $G_i$ for $i = 1, 2$. Assuming Schanuel's conjecture from transcendental number theory, we prove (under some minor…
In Arakelov theory a completion of an arithmetic surface is achieved by enlarging the group of divisors by formal linear combinations of the ``closed fibers at infinity''. Manin described the dual graph of any such closed fiber in terms of an infinite tangle of bounded geodesics in a hyperbolic handlebody endowed with a Schottky uniformization. In this paper we consider arithmetic surfaces over the ring of integers in a number field, with fibers of genus $g\geq 2$. We use Connes' theory of spectral triples to relate the hyperbolic geometry of the handlebody to Deninger's Archimedean cohomology…
We formulate the Asymptotic Length-Saturation Conjecture on the length sets of closed geodesics on hyperbolic manifolds whose fundamental groups are subarithmetic, that is, contained in an arithmetic group. We prove the first instance of the conjecture for punctured, Zariski dense covers of the modular surface. The tools involved include the Orbital Circle Method, expansion and counting in congruence towers of thin groups, estimates for exponential sums, bilinear forms, and quadratic L-series.
We consider certain Lagrangian states associated to unstable horocycles on the modular surface $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathbb{H}$, and show that for sufficiently large logarithmic times, expectation values for the wave propagated states diverge from the classical transport along geodesics. This is due to the fact that these states "escape to the cusp" very quickly, at logarithmic times, while the geodesic flow continues to equidistribute on the surface. The proof relies crucially on the analysis of expectation values for Eisenstein series initiated by Luo-Sarnak and Jakobson, based on sub…
