This note is a response to one of problems posed by A.K. Kwasniewski in one of his recent papers. Namely for the sequence of finite cobweb subposets, the looked for explicit formulas for corresponding sequence of characteristic polynomials are discovered and delivered here. The recurrence relation defining arbitrary family of charactristic polynomials of finite cobweb posets is also derived.
The characterization of the large family of cobweb posets as DAGs and oDAGs is given. The dim 2 poset such that its Hasse diagram coincide with digraf of arbitrary cobweb poset is constructed.
The characterization of fibonacci cobweb poset as d.a.g. and o.d.a.g. is given. The dim 2 poset such that its hasse diagram coincide with digraf of fibonacci cobweb poset is constructed.
The explicite formulas for Mobius function and some other important elements of the incidence algebra of an arbitrary cobweb poset are delivered. For that to do one uses Kwasniewski's construction of his cobweb posets . The digraph representation of these cobweb posets constitutes a newly discovered class of orderable DAG's named here down KoDAGs with a kind of universality now being investigated. Namely cobweb posets' and thus KoDAGs's defining di-bicliques are links of any complete relations' chains.
The explicite formulas for möbiusien function and some other important elements of the incidence algebra are delivered. For that to do one uses kwaśniewski's construction of his fibonacci cobweb poset in the plane grid coordinate system.
The explicit formula for mobiusien function of fibonacci cobweb poset P is given for the first time by the use of definition of P in plane grid coordinate system.
Kwasniewski's cobweb posets uniquely represented by directed acyclic graphs are such a generalization of the Fibonacci tree that allows joint combinatorial interpretation for all of them under admissibility condition. This interpretation was derived in the source papers and it entailes natural enquieres already formulated therein. In our note we response to one of those problems. This is a tiling problem. Our observations on tiling problem include proofs of tiling's existence for some cobweb-admissible sequences. We show also that not all cobwebs admit tiling as defined below.
A class of new type graded infinite posets with minimal element are considered. These so called cobweb posets introduced recently by the present author provide a wide range of new noncommutative prefab combinatorial schema with characteristic graded subposets as primes. The schema are defined here via relaxing commutativity and associativity requirements imposed on the composition of prefabs by the fathers of this fertile concept. The construction and the very first basic properties of cobweb prefabs are pointed out in what follows. An another single valued commutative amd associative composis…
Cobweb posets uniquely represented by directed acyclic graphs are such a generalization of the Fibonacci tree that allows joint combinatorial interpretation for all of them under admissibility condition. This interpretation was derived in the source papers ([6,7] and references therein to the first author).[7,6,8] include natural enquires to be reported on here. The purpose of this presentation is to report on the progress in solving computational problems which are quite easily formulated for the new class of directed acyclic graphs interpreted as Hasse diagrams. The problems posed there and …
The main purpose of this article is to pose three problems which are easy to be formulated in an elementary way. These problems which are specifically important also for the new class of partially ordered sets seem to be not yet solved.
F-boxes defined in [6] as hyper-boxes in N^{\infty} discrete space were applied here for the geometric description of the cobweb posetes Hasse diagrams tilings. The F-boxes edges sizes are taken to be values of terms of natural numbers' valued sequence F. The problem of partitions of hyper-boxes represented by graphs into blocks of special form is considered and these are to be called F-tilings. The proof of such tilings' existence for certain sub-family of admissible sequences F is delivered. The family of F-tilings which we consider here includes among others F = Natural numbers, Fibonacci n…
A digraph that represents reasonably a scheduling problem should be a directed acyclic graph. Here down we shall deal with special kind of graded $DAGs$ named $KoDAGs$. For their definition and first primary properties see $ [1]$, where natural join of directed biparted graphs and their corresponding adjacency matrices is defined and then applied to investigate cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ digraphs called $KoDAGs$. In this report we extend the notion of cobweb poset while delivering some elementary consequences of the description and observations established in $[1]$.
In recent Kwasniewski's papers inspired by O. V. Viskov it was shown that the $ψ$-calculus in parts appears to be almost automatic, natural extension of classical operator calculus of Rota - Mullin or equivalently - of umbral calculus of Roman and Rota. At the same time this calculus is an example of the algebraization of the analysis - here restricted to the algebra of polynomials. The first part of the article is the review of the recent author's contribution. The main definitions and theorems of Finite Fibonomial Operator Calculus which is a special case of $ψ$-extented Rota's finite operat…
Primary definitions, notation and general observations of finite fibonomial operator calculus (ffoc) are presented. Kwasniewski's combinatorial interpretation of fibonomial coefficients by the use of fibonacci cobweb poset is given. Some elements of incidence algebra of fibonacci cobweb poset are defined.
We introduce a natural partial order in structurally natural finite subsets of the cobweb prefabs sets recently constructed by the present author. Whitney numbers of the second kind of the corresponding subposet which constitute Stirling like numbers triangular array are then calculated and the explicit formula for them is provided. Next, in the second construction we endow the set sums of prefabiants with such an another partial order that their Bell like numbers include Fibonacci triad sequences introduced recently by the present author in order to extend famous relation between binomial New…
Natural join of $di-bigraphs$ that is directed biparted graphs and their corresponding adjacency matrices is defined and then applied to investigate the so called cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ digraphs called $KoDAGs$. $KoDAGs$ are special orderable directed acyclic graphs which are cover relation digraphs of cobweb posets introduced by the author few years ago. $KoDAGs$ appear to be distinguished family of $Ferrers$ digraphs which are natural join of a corresponding ordering chain of one direction directed cliques called $di-bicliques$. These digraphs serve to represent faithfully correspon…
One considers here orderable acyclic digraphs named KoDAGs which represent the outmost general chains of dibicliques denoting thus the outmost general chains of binary relations. Because of this fact KoDAGs start to become an outstanding concept of nowadays investigation. We propose here examples of codings of KoDAGs looked upon as infinite hyper-boxes as well as chains of rectangular hyper-boxes in N^\infty. Neither of KoDAGs codings considered here is a poset isomorphism with Pi = <P, \leq>. Nevertheless every example of coding supplies a new view on possible investigation of KoDAGs properti…
In addition to the three standard operations on posets which are dual of poset or ordinal and cardinal sums of partial ordered sets one adds the natural join of posets. This is especially natural natural join operation for graded posets including very special and important the so called cobweb posets. The main aims of this article are the presentation of the authors update applications of natural join of posets in the domain of graded posets and summary of the general properties of natural join of posets with posing some questions arising on the way. Thus in this note apart from revealing some…
In this note further clue decisive observations on cobweb admissible sequences are shared with the audience. In particular an announced proof of the Theorem 1 (by Dziemiańczuk) from [1] announced in India -Kolkata- December 2007 is delivered here. Namely here and there we claim that any cobweb admissible sequence F is at the point product of primary cobweb admissible sequences taking values one and/or certain power of an appropriate primary number p. Here also an algorithm to produce the family of all cobweb-admissible sequences i.e. the Problem 1 from [1] i.e. one of several problems posed in…
In response to [6], we discover the looked for inversion formula for F-nomial coefficients. Before supplying its proof, we generalize F-nomial coefficients to multi F-nomial coefficients and we give their combinatorial interpretation in cobweb posets language, as the number of maximal-disjoint blocks of the form sP_{k_1,k_2,...,k_s} of layer <Phi_1-->Phi_n>. Then we present inversion formula for F-nomial coefficients using multi F-nomial coefficients for all cobweb-admissible sequences. To this end we infer also some identities as conclusions of that inversion formula for the case of binomial,…
The notion of the Fibonacci cobweb poset from [1] has been naturally extended to any admissible sequence $F$ in [2] where it was also recognized that the celebrated prefab notion of Bender and Goldman [3] - (see also [4,5]) - admits such an extension so as to encompass the new type combinatorial objects from [2] as leading examples. Recently the present author had introduced also [6] two natural partial orders in there: one $\leq$ in grading-natural subsets of cobweb`s prefabs sets [2] and in the second proposal one endows the set sums of the so called "prefabiants" with such another partial o…
We introduce a new family of finite posets which we call 2-chains. These first arose in the study of 0-Hecke algebras, but they admit a variety of different characterisations. We give these characterisations, prove that they are equivalent and derive some numerical results concerning 2-chains.
For any marked poset we define a continuous family of polytopes, parametrized by a hypercube, generalizing the notions of marked order and marked chain polytopes. By providing transfer maps, we show that the vertices of the hypercube parametrize an Ehrhart equivalent family of lattice polytopes. The combinatorial type of the polytopes is constant when the parameters vary in the relative interior of each face of the hypercube. Moreover, with the help of a subdivision arising from a tropical hyperplane arrangement associated to the marked poset, we give an explicit description of the vertices of…
We construct a poset from a simple acyclic digraph together with a valuation on its vertices, and we compute the values of its Möbius function. We show that the weak order on Coxeter groups of type A, B, affine A, and the flag weak order on the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \_r \wr S\_n$ introduced by Adin, Brenti and Roichman, are special instances of our construction. We conclude by associating a quasi-symmetric function to each element of these posets. In the $A$ and $\widetilde{A}$ cases, this function coincides respectively with the classical Stanley symmetric function, and with Lam's affine…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of the containment graph of a family of sets and containment classes of graphs and posets. Let $Z$ be a family of nonempty sets. We call a (simple, finite) graph G = (V, E) a $Z$-containment graph provided one can assign to each vertex $v_i \in V $ a set $S_i \in Z$ such that $v_i v_j \in E$ if and only if $S_i \subset S_j$ or $S_j \subset S_i$ . Similarly, we call a (strict) partially ordered set $P = (V, <)$ a $Z$-containment poset if to each $v_i \in V $ we can assign a set $S_i \in Z$ such that $v_i < v_j$ if and only if $S_i \subset S_j$. Obviously, …
We introduce the following class of partizan games, called pomax games. Given a partially ordered set whose elements are colored black or white, the players Black and White take turns removing any maximal element of their own color. If there is no such element, the player loses. We prove that pomax games are always integer-valued and for colored tree posets and chess-colored Young diagram posets we give a simple formula for the value of the game. However, for pomax games on general posets of height 3 we show that the problem of deciding the winner is PSPACE-complete and for posets of height 2 …
The family of Buchsbaum simplicial posets generalizes the family of simplicial cell manifolds. The $h'$-vector of a simplicial complex or simplicial poset encodes the combinatorial and topological data of its face numbers and the reduced Betti numbers of its geometric realization. Novik and Swartz showed that the $h'$-vector of a Buchsbaum simplicial poset satisfies certain simple inequalities; in this paper we show that these necessary conditions are in fact sufficient to characterize the $h'$-vectors of Buchsbaum simplicial posets with prescribed Betti numbers.
Suppose $k \ge 2$ is an integer. Let $Y_k$ be the poset with elements $x_1, x_2, y_1, y_2, \ldots, y_{k-1}$ such that $y_1 < y_2 < \cdots < y_{k-1} < x_1, x_2$ and let $Y_k'$ be the same poset but all relations reversed. We say that a family of subsets of $[n]$ contains a copy of $Y_k$ on consecutive levels if it contains $k+1$ subsets $F_1, F_2, G_1, G_2, \ldots, G_{k-1}$ such that $G_1\subset G_2 \subset \cdots \subset G_{k-1} \subset F_1, F_2$ and $|F_1| = |F_2| = |G_{k-1}|+1 =|G_{k-2}|+ 2= \cdots = |G_{1}|+k-1$. If both $Y_k$ and $Y'_k$ on consecutive levels are forbidden, the size of the …
Boij and Söderberg made a pair of conjectures, which were subsequently proven by Eisenbud and Schreyer and then extended by Boij and Söderberg, about the structure of Betti diagrams of Graded modules. In the theory, a particular family of posets, and their associated order complexes, play an integral role. We explore the structure of this family. In particular, we show the posets are bounded complete lattices and the order complexes are vertex-decomposable, hence Cohen-Macaulay and squarefree glicci.
We construct different classes of lumpings for a family of Markov chain products which reflect the structure of a given finite poset. We use essentially combinatorial methods. We prove that, for such a product, every lumping can be obtained from the action of a suitable subgroup of the generalized wreath product of symmetric groups, acting on the underlying poset block structure, if and only if the poset defining the Markov process is totally ordered, and one takes the uniform Markov operator in each factor state space. Finally we show that, when the state space is a homogeneous space associat…
We adapt here the computation of characters on incidence Hopf algebras introduced by W. Schmitt in the 1990s to a family mixing bounded and unbounded posets. We then apply our results to the family of hypertree posets and partition posets. As a consequence, we obtain some enumerative formulas and a new proof for the computation of the Moebius numbers of the hypertree posets. Moreover, we compute the coproduct of the incidence Hopf algebra and recover a known formula for the number of hypertrees with fixed valency set and edge sizes set.
For given posets $P$ and $Q$ and an integer $n$, the generalized Turán problem for posets, asks for the maximum number of copies of $Q$ in a $P$-free subset of the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice, $2^{[n]}$. In this paper, among other results, we show the following: (i) For every $n\geq 5$, the maximum number of $2$-chains in a butterfly-free subfamily of $2^{[n]}$ is $\left\lceil\frac{n}{2}\right\rceil\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$. (ii) For every fixed $s$, $t$ and $k$, a $K_{s,t}$-free family in $2^{[n]}$ has $O\left(n\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}\right)$ $k$-chains. (iii) For every $n\geq …
Given a finite poset $\mathcal P$, we call a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $[n]$ $\mathcal P$-saturated if $\mathcal F$ does not contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$, but adding any other set to $\mathcal F$ creates an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. The induced saturated number of $\mathcal P$, denoted by $\text{sat}^*(n,\mathcal P)$, is the size of the smallest $\mathcal P$-saturated family with ground set $[n]$. In this paper we are mainly interested in the four-point poset called the butterfly. Ferrara, Kay, Kramer, Martin, Reiniger, Smith and Sullivan showed that the saturation numbe…
We consider the problem of fast zeta and Möbius transforms in finite posets, particularly in lattices. It has previously been shown that for a certain family of lattices, zeta and Möbius transforms can be computed in $O(e)$ elementary arithmetic operations, where $e$ denotes the size of the covering relation. We show that this family is exactly that of geometric lattices. We also extend the algorithms so that they work in $e$ operations for all semimodular lattices, including chains and divisor lattices. Finally, for both transforms, we provide a more general algorithm that works in $e$ operat…
We consider the problem of determining the maximum order of an induced vertex-disjoint union of cliques in a graph. More specifically, given some family of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ of equal order, we are interested in the parameter $a(\mathcal{G}) = \min_{G \in \mathcal{G}} \max \{ |U| : U \subseteq V, G[U] \text{ is a vertex-disjoint union of cliques} \}$. We determine the value of this parameter precisely when $\mathcal{G}$ is the family of comparability graphs of $n$-element posets with acyclic cover graph. In particular, we show that $a(\mathcal{G}) = (n+o(n))/\log_2 (n)$ in this class.
We introduce a method of decomposing the family of intervals along a cyclic permutation into chains to determine the size of the largest family of subsets of $[n]:= \{1,2,...,n\}$ not containing one or more given posets as a subposet. De Bonis, Katona and Swanepoel determined the size of the largest butterfly-free family. We strengthen this result by showing that, for certain posets containing the butterfly poset as a subposet, the same bound holds. We also obtain the corresponding LYM-type inequalities.
Resolving a conjecture of Methuku and the first author we determine the size of the largest family of subsets of an $n$-element set avoiding both $Y_k$ and $Y_k'$ as induced subposets. The result follows as a consequence of the analogous result on a cyclical grid poset.
Given a finite poset $P$, we consider the largest size $\lanp$ of a family $\F$ of subsets of $[n]:=\{1,...,n\}$ that contains no subposet $P$. This continues the study of the asymptotic growth of $\lanp$; it has been conjectured that for all $P$, $π(P):= \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty} \lanp/\nchn$ exists and equals a certain integer, $e(P)$. While this is known to be true for paths, and several more general families of posets, for the simple diamond poset $\D_2$, the existence of $π$ frustratingly remains open. Here we develop theory to show that $π(P)$ exists and equals the conjectured value $e(P…
The maximum size, $La(n,P)$, of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ without containing a copy of $P$ as a subposet, has been intensively studied. Let $P$ be a graded poset. We say that a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ contains a \emph{rank-preserving} copy of $P$ if it contains a copy of $P$ such that elements of $P$ having the same rank are mapped to sets of same size in $\mathcal{F}$. The largest size of a family of subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ without containing a rank-preserving copy of $P$ as a subposet is denoted by $La_{rp}(n,P)$. Clearly, $La(n,P) \le L…
Several recent papers have explored families of rational polyhedra whose integer points are in bijection with certain families of numerical semigroups. One such family, first introduced by Kunz, has integer points in bijection with numerical semigroups of fixed multiplicity, and another, introduced by Hellus and Waldi, has integer points corresponding to oversemigroups of numerical semigroups with two generators. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial framework from which to study both families of polyhedra. We introduce a new family of polyhedra called group cones, each constructed from so…
Let $\cX$ be a family of subsets of a finite set $E$. A matroid on $E$ is called an $\cX$-matroid if each set in $\cX$ is a circuit. We consider the problem of determining when there exists a unique maximal $\cX$-matroid in the weak order poset of all $\cX$-matroids on $E$, and characterizing its rank function when it exists.
We introduce an algorithm for computing closure systems derived from a family of implications on a set. Semilattices presentations are explored and used in conjunction with the algorithm to compute various types of lattices freely generated by partially ordered sets within four easy varieties.
In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon introduced a saturation version of Turán's classical theorem in extremal graph theory. In particular, they determined the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-free, $n$-vertex graph with the property that the addition of any further edge yields a copy of $K_r$. We consider analogues of this problem in other settings. We prove a saturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem about monotone subsequences and saturation versions of some Ramsey-type theorems on graphs and Dilworth-type theorems on posets. We also consider semisaturation problems, wherein we allow the…
Given a poset $P$, a family $F$ of elements in the Boolean lattice is said to be $P$-saturated if (1) $F$ contains no copy of $P$ as a subposet and (2) every proper superset of $F$ contains a copy of $P$ as a subposet. The maximum size of a $P$-saturated family is denoted by $La(n,P)$, which has been studied for a number of choices of $P$. The minimum size of a $P$-saturated family, $sat(n,P)$, was introduced by Gerbner et al. (2013), and parallels the deep literature on the saturation function for graphs. We introduce and study the concept of saturation for induced subposets. As opposed to in…
A subfamily $\mathcal{G}\subseteq \mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of sets is a non-induced (weak) copy of a poset $P$ in $\mathcal{F}$ if there exists a bijection $i:P\rightarrow \mathcal{G}$ such that $p\le_P q$ implies $i(p)\subseteq i(q)$. In the case where in addition $p\le_P q$ holds if and only if $i(p)\subseteq i(q)$, then $\mathcal{G}$ is an induced (strong) copy of $P$ in $\mathcal{F}$. We consider the minimum number $sat(n,P)$ [resp.\ $sat^*(n,P)$] of sets that a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ can have without containing a non-induced [induced] copy of $P$ and being maximal with…
We describe a family of shellings for the canonical triangulation of the order polytope of the zig-zag poset. This gives a new combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients in the numerator of the Ehrhart series of this order polytopein terms of the swap statistic on alternating permutations.
In the theory of partially-ordered sets, the two-dimensional Boolean lattice is known as the diamond. In this paper, we show that, if $\mathcal{F}$ is a family in the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice that has no diamond as a subposet, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 2.206653{n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, improving a bound by the authors and Michael Young.
In this note, we determine the maximum size of a $\{V_{k}, Λ_{l}\}$-free family in the lattice of vector subspaces of a finite vector space both in the non-induced case as well as the induced case, for a large range of parameters $k$ and $l$. These results generalize earlier work by Shahriari and Yu. We also prove a general LYM-type lemma for the linear lattice which resolves a conjecture of Shahriari and Yu.
We investigate a trivariate polynomial associated with rooted trees. It generalises a bivariate polynomial for rooted trees that was recently introduced by Liu. We show that this polynomial satisfies a deletion-contraction recursion and can be expressed as a sum over maximal antichains. Several combinatorial quantities can be obtained as special values, in particular the number of antichains, maximal antichains and cutsets. We prove that two of the three possible bivariate specialisations characterise trees uniquely up to isomorphism. One of these has already been established by Liu, the other…
We study the problem of determining the size of the largest intersecting $P$-free family for a given partially ordered set (poset) $P$. In particular, we find the exact size of the largest intersecting $B$-free family where $B$ is the butterfly poset and classify the cases of equality. The proof uses a new generalization of the partition method of Griggs, Li and Lu. We also prove generalizations of two well-known inequalities of Bollobás and Greene, Katona and Kleitman in this case. Furthermore, we obtain a general bound on the size of the largest intersecting $P$-free family, which is sharp f…
