A subfamily $\mathcal{G}\subseteq \mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of sets is a non-induced (weak) copy of a poset $P$ in $\mathcal{F}$ if there exists a bijection $i:P\rightarrow \mathcal{G}$ such that $p\le_P q$ implies $i(p)\subseteq i(q)$. In the case where in addition $p\le_P q$ holds if and only if $i(p)\subseteq i(q)$, then $\mathcal{G}$ is an induced (strong) copy of $P$ in $\mathcal{F}$. We consider the minimum number $sat(n,P)$ [resp.\ $sat^*(n,P)$] of sets that a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ can have without containing a non-induced [induced] copy of $P$ and being maximal with respect to this property, i.e., the addition of any $G\in 2^{[n]}\setminus \mathcal{F}$ creates a non-induced [induced] copy of $P$.
We prove for any finite poset $P$ that $sat(n,P)\le 2^{|P|-2}$, a bound independent of the size $n$ of the ground set. For induced copies of $P$, there is a dichotomy: for any poset $P$ either $sat^*(n,P)\le K_P$ for some constant depending only on $P$ or $sat^*(n,P)\ge \log_2 n$. We classify several posets according to this dichotomy, and also show better upper and lower bounds on $sat(n,P)$ and $sat^*(n,P)$ for specific classes of posets.
Our main new tool is a special ordering of the sets based on the colexicographic order. It turns out that if $P$ is given, processing the sets in this order and adding the sets greedily into our family whenever this does not ruin non-induced [induced] $P$-freeness, we tend to get a small size non-induced [induced] $P$-saturating family.
Given a finite poset $\mathcal P$, we call a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $[n]$ $\mathcal P$-saturated if $\mathcal F$ does not contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$, but adding any other set to $\mathcal F$ creates an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. The induced saturated number of $\mathcal P$, denoted by $\text{sat}^*(n,\mathcal P)$, is the size of the smallest $\mathcal P$-saturated family with ground set $[n]$. In this paper we are mainly interested in the four-point poset called the butterfly. Ferrara, Kay, Kramer, Martin, Reiniger, Smith and Sullivan showed that the saturation numbe…
In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon introduced a saturation version of Turán's classical theorem in extremal graph theory. In particular, they determined the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-free, $n$-vertex graph with the property that the addition of any further edge yields a copy of $K_r$. We consider analogues of this problem in other settings. We prove a saturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem about monotone subsequences and saturation versions of some Ramsey-type theorems on graphs and Dilworth-type theorems on posets. We also consider semisaturation problems, wherein we allow the…
Given a finite poset $\mathcal{P}$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of elements in the Boolean lattice is induced-$\mathcal{P}$-saturated if $\mathcal{F}$ contains no copy of $\mathcal{P}$ as an induced subposet but every proper superset of $\mathcal{F}$ contains a copy of $\mathcal{P}$ as an induced subposet. The minimum size of an induced-$\mathcal{P}$-saturated family in the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice, denoted $\operatorname{sat}^*(n,\mathcal{P})$, was first studied by Ferrara et al. (2017). Our work focuses on strengthening lower bounds. For the 4-point poset known as the diamond, we prove $\o…
Given a poset $P$, a family $F$ of elements in the Boolean lattice is said to be $P$-saturated if (1) $F$ contains no copy of $P$ as a subposet and (2) every proper superset of $F$ contains a copy of $P$ as a subposet. The maximum size of a $P$-saturated family is denoted by $La(n,P)$, which has been studied for a number of choices of $P$. The minimum size of a $P$-saturated family, $sat(n,P)$, was introduced by Gerbner et al. (2013), and parallels the deep literature on the saturation function for graphs. We introduce and study the concept of saturation for induced subposets. As opposed to in…
The abstract induced subgraph poset of a graph is the isomorphism class of the induced subgraph poset of the graph, suitably weighted by subgraph counting numbers. The abstract bond lattice and the abstract edge-subgraph poset are defined similarly by considering the lattice of subgraphs induced by connected partitions and the poset of edge-subgraphs, respectively. Continuing our development of graph reconstruction theory on these structures, we show that if a graph has no isolated vertices, then its abstract bond lattice and the abstract induced subgraph poset can be constructed from the abst…
For posets $P$ and $Q$, extremal and saturation problems about weak and strong $P$-free subposets of $Q$ have been studied mostly in the case $Q$ is the Boolean poset $Q_n$, the poset of all subsets of an $n$-element set ordered by inclusion. In this paper, we study some instances of the problem with $Q$ being the grid, and its connections to the Boolean case and to the forbidden submatrix problem.
We study the poset $\mathcal{G}$ of all unlabelled graphs, up to isomorphism, with $H\le G$ if $H$ occurs as an induced subgraph in $G$. We present some general results on the Möbius function of intervals of $\mathcal{G}$ and some results for specific classes of graphs. This includes a case where the Möbius function is given by the Catalan numbers, which we prove using discrete Morse theory, and another case where it equals the Fibonacci numbers, therefore showing that the Möbius function is unbounded. A classification of the disconnected intervals of $\mathcal{G}$ is presented, which gives a …
Resolving a conjecture of Methuku and the first author we determine the size of the largest family of subsets of an $n$-element set avoiding both $Y_k$ and $Y_k'$ as induced subposets. The result follows as a consequence of the analogous result on a cyclical grid poset.
In this note, we determine the maximum size of a $\{V_{k}, Λ_{l}\}$-free family in the lattice of vector subspaces of a finite vector space both in the non-induced case as well as the induced case, for a large range of parameters $k$ and $l$. These results generalize earlier work by Shahriari and Yu. We also prove a general LYM-type lemma for the linear lattice which resolves a conjecture of Shahriari and Yu.
The problem of determining the maximum size $La(n,P)$ that a $P$-free subposet of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ can have, attracted the attention of many researchers, but little is known about the induced version of these problems. In this paper we determine the asymptotic behavior of $La^*(n,P)$, the maximum size that an induced $P$-free subposet of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ can have for the case when $P$ is the complete two-level poset $K_{r,t}$ or the complete multi-level poset $K_{r,s_1,\dots,s_j,t}$ when all $s_i$'s either equal 4 or are large enough and satisfy an extra condition. We also sh…
Let $\mathcal P(n)$ denote the power set of $[n]$, ordered by inclusion, and let $\mathcal P (n,p)$ denote the random poset obtained from $\mathcal P(n)$ by retaining each element from $\mathcal P (n)$ independently at random with probability $p$ and discarding it otherwise. Given any fixed poset $F$ we determine the threshold for the property that $\mathcal P(n,p)$ contains $F$ as an induced subposet. We also asymptotically determine the number of copies of a fixed poset $F$ in $\mathcal P(n)$. Finally, we obtain a number of results on the Ramsey properties of the random poset $\mathcal P(n,p…
In this paper, we discuss a generalization of the notion of saturation in graphs in order to deal with induced structures. In particular, we define ${\rm indsat}(n,H)$, which is the fewest number of gray edges in a trigraph so that no realization of that trigraph has an induced copy of $H$, but changing any white or black edge to gray results in some realization that does have an induced copy of $H$. We give some general and basic results and then prove that ${\rm indsat}(n,P_4)=\lceil (n+1)/3\rceil$ for $n\geq 4$ where $P_4$ is the path on 4 vertices. We also show how induced saturation in th…
We consider a simplicial complex generaliztion of a result of Billera and Meyers that every nonshellable poset contains the smallest nonshellable poset as an induced subposet. We prove that every nonshellable $2$-dimensional simplicial complex contains a nonshellable induced subcomplex with less than $8$ vertices. We also establish CL-shellability of interval orders and as a consequence obtain a formula for the Betti numbers of any interval order.
In 2016, Hasebe and Tsujie gave a recursive characterization of the set of induced $N$-free and bowtie-free posets; Misanantenaina and Wagner studied these orders further, naming them "$\mathcal{V}$-posets". Here we offer a new characterization of $\mathcal{V}$-posets by introducing a property we refer to as autonomy. A poset $\cP$ is said to be autonomous if there exists a directed acyclic graph $D$ (with adjacency matrix $U$) whose transitive closure is $\cP$, with the property that any total ordering of the vertices of $D$ so that Gaussian elimination of $U^TU$ proceeds without row swaps is…
We consider the problem of determining the maximum order of an induced vertex-disjoint union of cliques in a graph. More specifically, given some family of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ of equal order, we are interested in the parameter $a(\mathcal{G}) = \min_{G \in \mathcal{G}} \max \{ |U| : U \subseteq V, G[U] \text{ is a vertex-disjoint union of cliques} \}$. We determine the value of this parameter precisely when $\mathcal{G}$ is the family of comparability graphs of $n$-element posets with acyclic cover graph. In particular, we show that $a(\mathcal{G}) = (n+o(n))/\log_2 (n)$ in this class.
We describe some metric properties of incomparability graphs. We consider the problem of the existence of infinite paths, either induced or isometric, in the incomparability graph of a poset. Among other things, we show that if the incomparability graph of a poset is connected and has infinite diameter, then it contains an infinite induced path. Furthermore, if the diameter of the set of vertices of degree at least $3$ is infinite, then the graph contains as an induced subgraph either a comb or a kite.
A graph $G$ is called $H$-induced-saturated if $G$ does not contain an induced copy of $H$, but removing any edge from $G$ creates an induced copy of $H$ and adding any edge of $G^{c}$ to $G$ creates an induced copy of $H$. Martin and Smith showed that there does not exist a $P_{4}$-induced-saturated graph, where $P_{4}$ is the path on 4 vertices. Axenovich and Csikós studied related questions, and asked if there exists a $P_{n}$-induced-saturated graph for any $n\geq5$. Our aim in this short note is to show that there exists a $P_{6}$-induced-saturated graph.
Given graphs $G$ and $H$, $G$ is $H$-saturated if $H$ is not a subgraph of $G$, but for all $e \notin E(G)$, $H$ appears as a subgraph of $G + e$. While for every $n \ge |V(H)|$, there exists an $n$-vertex graph that is $H$-saturated, the same does not hold for induced subgraphs. That is, there exist graphs $H$ and values of $n \ge |V(H)|$ for which every $n$-vertex graph $G$ either contains $H$ as an induced subgraph, or there exists $e \notin E(G)$ such that $G + e$ does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. To circumvent this, Martin and Smith make use of trigraphs when introducing the co…
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the unimodality of a convolution of two sequences of binomial coefficients preceded by a finite number of ones. These convolution sequences arise as as rank sequences of posets of vertex-induced subtrees for a particular class of trees. The number of such trees whose poset of vertex-induced subgraphs containing the root is not rank unimodal is determined for a fixed number of vertices $i$.
We study the set $\sncb (p,q)$ of annular non-crossing permutations of type B, and we introduce a corresponding set $\ncb (p,q)$ of annular non-crossing partitions of type B, where $p$ and $q$ are two positive integers. We prove that the natural bijection between $\sncb (p,q)$ and $\ncb (p,q)$ is a poset isomorphism, where the partial order on $\sncb (p,q)$ is induced from the hyperoctahedral group $B_{p+q}$, while $\ncb (p,q)$ is partially ordered by reverse refinement. In the case when $q=1$, we prove that $\ncb (p,1)$ is a lattice with respect to reverse refinement order. We point out that …
For a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-induced-saturated if $G$ does not contain an induced copy of $H$, but either removing an edge from $G$ or adding a non-edge to $G$ creates an induced copy of $H$. Depending on the graph $H$, an $H$-induced-saturated graph does not necessarily exist. In fact, Martin and Smith (2012) showed that $P_4$-induced-saturated graphs do not exist, where $P_k$ denotes a path on $k$ vertices. Axenovich and Csikós (2019) asked the existence of $P_k$-induced-saturated graphs for $k \ge 5$; it is easy to construct such graphs when $k\in\{2, 3\}$. Recently, Räty constructed…

Graph product is a fundamental tool with rich applications in both graph theory and theoretical computer science. It is usually studied in the form $f(G*H)$ where $G$ and $H$ are graphs, * is a graph product and $f$ is a graph property. For example, if $f$ is the independence number and * is the disjunctive product, then the product is known to be multiplicative: $f(G*H)=f(G)f(H)$. In this paper, we study graph products in the following non-standard form: $f((G\oplus H)*J)$ where $G$, $H$ and $J$ are graphs, $\oplus$ and * are two different graph products and $f$ is a graph property. We show t…
A graph $G$ is $H$-saturated for a graph $H$, if $G$ does not contain a copy of $H$ but adding any new edge to $G$ results in such a copy. An $H$-saturated graph on a given number of vertices always exists and the properties of such graphs, for example their highest density, have been studied intensively. A graph $G$ is $H$-induced-saturated if $G$ does not have an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$, but adding an edge to $G$ from its complement or deleting an edge from $G$ results in an induced copy of $H$. It is not immediate anymore that $H$-induced-saturated graphs exist. In fact, Martin a…
Let $π:{\mathbb R}^n \to {\mathbb R}^d$ be any linear projection, let $A$ be the image of the standard basis. Motivated by Postnikov's study of postitive Grassmannians via plabic graphs and Galashin's connection of plabic graphs to slices of zonotopal tilings of 3-dimensional cyclic zonotopes, we study the poset of subdivisions induced by the restriction of $π$ to the $k$-th hypersimplex, for $k=1,\dots,n-1$. We show that: - For arbitrary $A$ and for $k\le d+1$, the corresponding fiber polytope $\mathcal F^{(k)}(A)$ is normally isomorphic to the Minkowski sum of the secondary polytopes of all …
For each poset $H$ whose Hasse diagram is a tree of height $k$, we show that the largest size of a family $\cF$ of subsets of $[n]=\{1,..., n\}$ not containing $H$ as an induced subposet is asymptotic to $(k-1){n\choose \fl{n/2}}$. This extends the result of Bukh \cite{bukh}, which in turn generalizes several known results including Sperner's theorem.
A poset is {\it $(\3+\1)$-free} if it contains no induced subposet isomorphic to the disjoint union of a 3-element chain and a 1-element chain. These posets are of interest because of their connection with interval orders and their appearance in the $(\3+\1)$-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. The dimension 2 posets $P$ are exactly the ones which have an associated permutation $π$ where $i\prec j$ in $P$ if and only if $i<j$ as integers and $i$ comes before $j$ in the one-line notation of $π$. So we say that a permutation $π$ is {\it $(\3+\1)$-free} or {\it $(\3+\1)$-avoiding} if its p…
In recent work, Benkart, Klivans, and Reiner defined the critical group of a faithful representation of a finite group $G$, which is analogous to the critical group of a graph. In this paper we study maps between critical groups induced by injective group homomorphisms and in particular the map induced by restriction of the representation to a subgroup. We show that in the abelian group case the critical groups are isomorphic to the critical groups of a certain Cayley graph and that the restriction map corresponds to a graph covering map. We also show that when $G$ is an element in a different…
Recently it has been shown that all non-trivial closed permutation groups containing the automorphism group of the random poset are generated by two types of permutations: the first type are permutations turning the order upside down, and the second type are permutations induced by so-called rotations. In this paper we introduce rotations for finite posets, which can be seen as the poset counterpart of Seidel-switch for finite graphs. We analyze some of their combinatorial properties, and investigate in particular the question of when two finite posets are rotation-equivalent. We moreover give…
