An induced subposet $(P_2,\le_2)$ of a poset $(P_1,\le_1)$ is a subset of $P_1$ such that for every two $X,Y\in P_2$, $X\le_2 Y$ if and only if $X\le_1 Y$. The Boolean lattice $Q_n$ of dimension $n$ is the poset consisting of all subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ ordered by inclusion. Given two posets $P_1$ and $P_2$ the poset Ramsey number $R(P_1,P_2)$ is the smallest integer $N$ such that in any blue/red coloring of the elements of $Q_N$ there is either a monochromatically blue induced subposet isomorphic to $P_1$ or a monochromatically red induced subposet isomorphic to $P_2$.
We provide upper bounds on $R(P,Q_n)$ for two classes of $P$: parallel compositions of chains, i.e.\ posets consisting of disjoint chains which are pairwise element-wise incomparable, as well as subdivided $Q_2$, which are posets obtained from two parallel chains by adding a common minimal and a common maximal element. This completes the determination of $R(P,Q_n)$ for posets $P$ with at most $4$ elements. If $P$ is an antichain $A_t$ on $t$ elements, we show that $R(A_t,Q_n)=n+3$ for $3\le t\le \log \log n$. Additionally, we briefly survey proof techniques in the poset Ramsey setting $P$ versus $Q_n$.
We present two results on maximal antichains in the strict chain product poset $[t_1+1]\times[t_2+1]\times\ldots\times[t_n+1]$. First, we prove that these maximal antichains are also maximum. Second, we prove that there is a bijection between maximal antichains in the strict chain product poset $[t_1+1]\times[t_2+1]\times\ldots\times[t_n+1]$ and antichains in the non-strict chain product poset $[t_1]\times[t_2]\times\ldots\times[t_n]$.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a $P_4$-free graph to be a cograph. This allows us to obtain a simple proof of the fact that finite $P_4$-free graphs are finite cographs. We also prove that $N$-free chain complete posets and $N$-free posets with no infinite antichains are series-parallel. As a consequence, we obtain that every $N$-free poset with no infinite antichain has a chain and a partition into antichains so that each part intersects the chain. This answers a conjecture of Aharoni and Korman (Order \textbf{9} (1992) 245--253) in this case.
Motivated by the paper of Axenovich and Walzer [2], we study the Ramsey-type problems on the Boolean lattices. Given posets $P$ and $Q$, we look for the smallest Boolean lattice $\mathcal{B}_N$ such that any coloring on elements of $\mathcal{B}_N$ must contain a monochromatic $P$ or a rainbow $Q$. This number $N$ is called the Boolean rainbow Ramsey number of $P$ and $Q$ in the paper. Particularly, we determine the exact values of the Boolean rainbow Ramsey number for $P$ and $Q$ being the antichains, the Boolean posets, or the chains. From these results, we also give some general upper and lo…
This paper gives another proof of Propp and Roby's theorem saying that the average antichain size in any reverse operator orbit of the poset $[m]\times [n]$ is $\frac{mn}{m+n}$. It is conceivable that our method should work for other situations. As a demonstration, we show that the average size of antichains in any reverse operator orbit of $[m]\times K_{n-1}$ equals $\frac{2mn}{m+2n-1}$. Here $K_{n-1}$ is the minuscule poset $[n-1]\oplus ([1] \sqcup [1]) \oplus [n-1]$. Note that $[m]\times [n]$ and $[m]\times K_{n-1}$ can be interpreted as sub-families of certain root posets. We guess these r…
The chain covering number $\Cov(P)$ of a poset $P$ is the least number of chains needed to cover $P$. For a cardinal $ν$, we give a list of posets of cardinality and covering number $ν$ such that for every poset $P$ with no infinite antichain, $\Cov(P)\geq ν$ if and only if $P$ embeds a member of the list. This list has two elements if $ν$ is a successor cardinal, namely $[ν]^2$ and its dual, and four elements if $ν$ is a limit cardinal with $\cf(ν)$ weakly compact. For $ν= \aleph_1$, a list was given by the first author; his construction was extended by F. Dorais to every infinite successor c…
Aharoni and Korman (Order 9 (1992) 245--253) have conjectured that every ordered set without infinite antichains possesses a chain and a partition into antichains so that each part intersects the chain. The conjecture is verified for posets whose incomparability graph is locally finite. It follows that the conjecture is true for $(3 + 1)$-free posets with no infinite antichains.
This paper gives a formula for the antichain generating polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ of the poset $[k]\times Q$, where $[k]$ is an arbitrary chain and $Q$ is any finite graded poset. When $Q$ specializes to be a connected minuscule poet, which was classified by Proctor in 1984, we find that the polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ bears nice properties. For instance, we will recover the $B_n$-Narayana polynomial and the $D_{2n+2}$-Narayana polynomial. We collect evidence for the conjecture that whenever $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times P}(x)$ is palindromic, it must be $γ$-positive. Moreove…
We study maximum antichains in two posets related to quiver representations. Firstly, we consider the set of isomorphism classes of indecomposable representations ordered by inclusion. For various orientations of the Dynkin diagram of type A we construct a maximum antichain in the poset. Secondly, we consider the set of subrepresentations of a given quiver representation, again ordered by inclusion. It is a finite set if we restrict to linear representations over finite fields or to representations with values in the category of pointed sets. For particular situations we prove that this poset …
We consider 'supersaturation' problems in partially ordered sets (posets) of the following form. Given a finite poset $P$ and an integer $m$ greater than the cardinality of the largest antichain in $P$, what is the minimum number of comparable pairs in a subset of $P$ of cardinality $m$? We provide a framework for obtaining lower bounds on this quantity based on counting comparable pairs relative to a random chain and apply this framework to obtain supersaturation results for three classical posets: the boolean lattice, the collection of subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ ordered by set inclusion a…
We investigate a trivariate polynomial associated with rooted trees. It generalises a bivariate polynomial for rooted trees that was recently introduced by Liu. We show that this polynomial satisfies a deletion-contraction recursion and can be expressed as a sum over maximal antichains. Several combinatorial quantities can be obtained as special values, in particular the number of antichains, maximal antichains and cutsets. We prove that two of the three possible bivariate specialisations characterise trees uniquely up to isomorphism. One of these has already been established by Liu, the other…
For a reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak h$ and a simple finite-dimensional $\mathfrak h$-module $V$, the set of weights of $V$, $P(V)$, has a natural poset structure. We consider antichains in the weight poset $P(V)$ and a certain operator $\mathfrak X$ acting on antichains. Eventually, we impose stronger constraints on $(\mathfrak h,V)$ and stick to the case in which $\mathfrak h$ and $V$ are associated with a $Z$-grading of a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. Then $V$ is a weight multiplicity free $\mathfrak h$-module and $P(V)$ can be regarded as a subposet of $Δ^+$, where $Δ$ is the root sy…
Let $(\mathcal{P},\leqslant)$ be a finite poset. Define the numbers $a_1,a_2,\ldots$ (respectively, $c_1,c_2,\ldots$) so that $a_1+\ldots+a_k$ (respectively, $c_1+\ldots+c_k$) is the maximal number of elements of $\mathcal{P}$ which may be covered by $k$ antichains (respectively, $k$ chains.) Then the number $e(\mathcal{P})$ of linear extensions of poset $\mathcal{P}$ is not less than $\prod a_i!$ and not more than $n!/\prod c_i!$. A corollary: if $\mathcal{P}$ is partitioned onto disjoint antichains of size $b_1,b_2, \ldots$, then $e(\mathcal{P})\geqslant \prod b_i!$.
In this note we consider a Ramsey type result for partially ordered sets. In particular, we give an alternative short proof of a theorem for a posets with multiple linear extensions recently obtained by Solecki and Zhao.
In this paper, we analyze the toggle group on the set of antichains of a poset. Toggle groups, generated by simple involutions, were first introduced by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass for order ideals of posets. Recently Striker has motivated the study of toggle groups on general families of subsets, including antichains. This paper expands on this work by examining the relationship between the toggle groups of antichains and order ideals, constructing an explicit isomorphism between the two groups. We also focus on the rowmotion action that has been well-studied in dynamical algebraic combinatori…
Let $Δ$ be a (connected) Dynkin diagram of rank $n\ge 2$ and $Φ_+ = Φ_+(Δ)$ the corresponding root poset (it consists of all positive roots with respect to a fixed root basis). The width of $Φ_+$ is $n$. We will show that $Φ_+$ is "conical": it is the disjoint union of $n$ solid chains. The rich antichains in $Φ_+$ are the antichains of cardinality $n-1$. It is well known that the number of rich antichains is equal to the cardinality of $Φ_+$. The set $\mathcal R(Δ)$ of rich antichains in $Φ_+$ can itself be considered as a poset which is quite similar, but not always isomorphic, to $Φ_+$. We …
The rowmotion action on order ideals or on antichains of a finite partially ordered set has been studied (under a variety of names) by many authors. Depending on the poset, one finds unexpectedly interesting orbit structures, instances of (small order) periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy. Many of these nice features still hold when the action is extended to $[0,1]$-labelings of the poset or (via detropicalization) to labelings by rational functions (the birational setting). In this work, we parallel the birational lifting already done for order-ideal rowmotion to antichain rowmotion. We …
To each lattice simplex $Δ$ we associate a poset encoding the additive structure of lattice points in the fundamental parallelepiped for $Δ$. When this poset is an antichain, we say $Δ$ is antichain. To each partition $λ$ of $n$, we associate a lattice simplex $Δ_λ$ having one unimodular facet, and we investigate their associated posets. We give a number-theoretic characterization of the relations in these posets, as well as a simplified characterization in the case where each part of $λ$ is relatively prime to $n-1$. We use these characterizations to experimentally study $Δ_λ$ for all partiti…
Let $\mathcal P(n)$ denote the power set of $[n]$, ordered by inclusion, and let $\mathcal P (n,p)$ denote the random poset obtained from $\mathcal P(n)$ by retaining each element from $\mathcal P (n)$ independently at random with probability $p$ and discarding it otherwise. Given any fixed poset $F$ we determine the threshold for the property that $\mathcal P(n,p)$ contains $F$ as an induced subposet. We also asymptotically determine the number of copies of a fixed poset $F$ in $\mathcal P(n)$. Finally, we obtain a number of results on the Ramsey properties of the random poset $\mathcal P(n,p…
Given partially ordered sets (posets) $(P, \leq_P)$ and $(P', \leq_{P'})$, we say that $P'$ contains a copy of $P$ if for some injective function $f: P\rightarrow P'$ and for any $X, Y\in P$, $X\leq _P Y$ if and only of $f(X)\leq_{P'} f(Y)$. For any posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the least positive integer $N$ such that no matter how the elements of an $N$-dimensional Boolean lattice are colored in blue and red, there is either a copy of $P$ with all blue elements or a copy of $Q$ with all red elements. We focus on a poset Ramsey number $R(P, Q_n)$ for a fixed poset $P…
A poset $(P',\le_{P'})$ contains a copy of some other poset $(P,\le_P)$ if there is an injection $f\colon P'\to P$ where for every $X,Y\in P$, $X\le_P Y$ if and only if $f(X)\le_{P'} f(Y)$. For any posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the smallest integer $N$ such that any blue/red coloring of a Boolean lattice of dimension $N$ contains either a copy of $P$ with all elements blue or a copy of $Q$ with all elements red. We denote by $K_{t_1,\dots,t_\ell}$ a complete $\ell$-partite poset, i.e.\ a poset consisting of $\ell$ pairwise disjoint sets $A^i$ of size $t_i$, $1\le i\le…
An antichain $\mathcal{A}$ in a poset $\mathcal{P}$ is a subset of $\mathcal{P}$ in which no two elements are comparable. Sperner showed that the maximal antichain in the Boolean lattice, $\mathcal{B}_n = \left\{ 0 < 1 \right\}^n$, is the largest rank (of size $\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$). This type of problem has been since generalized, and a graded poset $\mathcal{P}$ is said to be Sperner if the largest rank of $\mathcal{P}$ is its maximal antichain. In this paper, we will show that the symmetric group $S_n$, partially ordered by refinement (or equivalently by absolute order), is Spern…
A subposet $Q'$ of a poset $Q$ is a copy of a poset $P$ if there is a bijection $f$ between elements of $P$ and $Q'$ such that $x\leq y$ in $P$ iff $f(x)\leq f(y)$ in $Q'$. For posets $P, P'$, let the poset Ramsey number $R(P,P')$ be the smallest $N$ such that no matter how the elements of the Boolean lattice $Q_N$ are colored red and blue, there is a copy of $P$ with all red elements or a copy of $P'$ with all blue elements. We provide some general bounds on $R(P,P')$ and focus on the situation when $P$ and $P'$ are both Boolean lattices. In addition, we give asymptotically tight bounds for t…
Given posets $\mathbf{P}_1,\mathbf{P}_2,\ldots,\mathbf{P}_k$, let the {\em Boolean Ramsey number} $R(\mathbf{P}_1,\mathbf{P}_2,\ldots,\mathbf{P}_k)$ be the minimum number $n$ such that no matter how we color the elements in the Boolean lattice $\mathbf{B}_n$ with $k$ colors, there always exists a poset $\mathbf{P}_i$ contained in $\mathbf{B}_n$ whose elements are all colored with $i$. This function was first introduced by Axenovich and Walzer~\cite{AW}. Recently, many results on determining $R(\mathbf{B}_m,\mathbf{B}_n)$ have been published. In this paper, we will study the function $R(\mathbf…
In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon introduced a saturation version of Turán's classical theorem in extremal graph theory. In particular, they determined the minimum number of edges in a $K_r$-free, $n$-vertex graph with the property that the addition of any further edge yields a copy of $K_r$. We consider analogues of this problem in other settings. We prove a saturation version of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem about monotone subsequences and saturation versions of some Ramsey-type theorems on graphs and Dilworth-type theorems on posets. We also consider semisaturation problems, wherein we allow the…
We present a refinement of Ramsey numbers by considering graphs with a partial ordering on their vertices. This is a natural extension of the ordered Ramsey numbers. We formalize situations in which we can use arbitrary families of partially-ordered sets to form host graphs for Ramsey problems. We explore connections to well studied Turán-type problems in partially-ordered sets, particularly those in the Boolean lattice. We find a strong difference between Ramsey numbers on the Boolean lattice and ordered Ramsey numbers when the partial ordering on the graphs have large antichains.
The algebraic variety defined by the idempotents of an incidence monoid is investigated. Its irreducible components are determined. The intersection with an antichain submonoid is shown to be the union of these irreducible components. The antichain monoids of bipartite posets are shown to be orthodox semigroups. The Green's relations are explicitly determined, and applications to conjugacy problems are described. In particular, it is shown that two elements in the antichain monoid are primarily conjugate in the monoid if and only if they belong to the same $\mathcal{J}$-class and their multipl…
We address the following rainbow Ramsey problem: For posets $P,Q$ what is the smallest number $n$ such that any coloring of the elements of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ either admits a monochromatic copy of $P$ or a rainbow copy of $Q$. We consider both weak and strong (non-induced and induced) versions of this problem. We also investigate related problems on (partial) $k$-colorings of $B_n$ that do not admit rainbow antichains of size $k$.
It is well-known that an antichain in the poset $[0,1]^n$ must have measure zero. Engel, Mitsis, Pelekis and Reiher showed that in fact it must have $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure at most $n$, and they conjectured that this bound can be attained. In this note we show that, for every $n$, such an antichain does indeed exist.
A subposet $Q'$ of a poset $Q$ is a \textit{copy of a poset} $P$ if there is a bijection $f$ between elements of $P$ and $Q'$ such that $x \le y$ in $P$ iff $f(x) \le f(y)$ in $Q'$. For posets $P, P'$, let the \textit{poset Ramsey number} $R(P,P')$ be the smallest $N$ such that no matter how the elements of the Boolean lattice $Q_N$ are colored red and blue, there is a copy of $P$ with all red elements or a copy of $P'$ with all blue elements. Axenovich and Walzer introduced this concept in \textit{Order} (2017), where they proved $R(Q_2, Q_n) \le 2n + 2$ and $R(Q_n, Q_m) \le mn + n + m$, wher…
Let $P(n)$ be the set of all posets with $n$ elements. Let $P^{(j)}(n)$, $1\leq j\leq 2^n,$ be the number of all posets with $n$ elements possessing exactly $j$ antichains. We have determined the numbers $P^{(j)}(7),$ $1\leq j\leq 128$, and using a result of M.~Erné [Erné, M., On the cardinalities of finite topologies and the number of antichains in partially ordered sets, Discrete Mathematics 35 (1981), 119-133.], we compute $|P(10)|$ without the aid of any computer program. We include the Hasse diagrams of all the non-isomorphic posets of $P(7)$. We also present formulas for the number of co…
An \emph{$n$-cube antichain} is a subset of the unit $n$-cube $[0,1]^n$ that does not contain two elements $\mathbf{x}=(x_1, x_2,\ldots, x_n)$ and $\mathbf{y}=(y_1, y_2,\ldots, y_n)$ satisfying $x_i\le y_i$ for all $i\in \{1,\ldots,n\}$. Using a chain partition of an adequate finite poset we show that the Hausdorff dimension of an $n$-cube antichain is at most $n-1$.We conjecture that the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of an $n$-cube antichain is at most $n$ times the Hausdorff measure of a facet of the unit $n$-cube and we verify this conjecture for $n=2$ as well as under the assumptio…
We define several sorts of mappings on a poset like monotone, strictly monotone, upper cone preserving and variants of these. Our aim is to characterize posets in which some of these mappings coincide. We define special mappings determined by two elements and investigate when these are strictly monotone or upper cone preserving. If the considered poset is a semilattice then its monotone mappings coincide with semilattice homomorphisms if and only if the poset is a chain. Similarly, we study posets which need not be semilattices but whose upper cones have a minimal element. We extend this inves…
