In this paper we classify triangular semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebras over any algebraically closed field k. Namely, we construct, for each positive integer N, relatively prime to the characteristic of k if it is positive, a bijection between the set of isomorphism classes of triangular semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebras of dimension N over k, and the set of isomorphism classes of quadruples (G,H,V,u), where G is a group of order N, H is a subgroup of G, V is an irreducible projective representation of H over k of dimension |H|^{1/2}, and u\in G is a central element of order \le 2.
This classification implies, in particular, that any triangular semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra over k can be obtained from a group algebra by a twist. We also answer positively the question from our previous paper whether the group underlying a minimal triangular semisimple Hopf algebra is solvable. We conclude by showing that any triangular semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra over k of dimension bigger than 1 contains a non-trivial grouplike element.
The classification uses Deligne's theorem on Tannakian categories and the results of a paper of Movshev in an essential way. The proof of solvability and existence of grouplike elements relies on a theorem of Howlett and Isaacs that any group of central type is solvable, which is proved using the classification of finite simple groups. The classification in positive characteristic relies also on the lifting functor from our previous paper.
To a semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field, we associate a planar algebra defined by generators and relations and show that it is a connected, irreducible, spherical, non-degenerate planar algebra with non-zero modulus and of depth two. This association is shown to yield a bijection between (the isomorphism classes, on both sides, of) such objects.
Recently, important progress has been made in the study of finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebras over a field of characteristic zero. Yet, very little is known over a field of positive characteristic. In this paper we prove some results on finite-dimensional semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebras A over a field of positive characteristic, notably Kaplansky's 5th conjecture on the order of the antipode of A. These results have already been proved over a field of characteristic zero, so in a sense we demonstrate that it is sufficient to consider semisimple Hopf algebras over such a fiel…
Braided Morita invariants of finite-dimensional semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebras with braidings are constructed by refining the polynomial invariants introduced by the author. The invariants are computed for the duals of Suzuki's braided Hopf algebras, and as an application of that, the braided Morita equivalence classes over the $8$-dimensional Kac-Paljutkin algebra are determined. This paper also includes the modified results and proofs on determination of the coribbon elements of Suzuki's braided Hopf algebras, that are discussed and given in my previous paper "The coribbon structu…
We introduce new polynomial invariants of a finite-dimensional semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra A over a field by using the braiding structures of A. We investigate basic properties of the polynomial invariants including stability under extension of the base field. Furthermore, we show that our polynomial invariants are indeed tensor invariants of the representation category of A, and recognize the difference of the representation category and the representation ring of A. Actually, by computing and comparing polynomial invariants, we find new examples of pairs of Hopf algebras whose r…
We use a version of Haboush's theorem over complete local Noetherian rings to prove faithfulness of the lifting for semisimple cosemisimple Hopf algebras and separable (braided, symmetric) fusion categories from characteristic $p$ to characteristic zero (arXiv/math:0203060, Section 9), showing that, moreover, any isomorphism between such structures can be reduced modulo $p$. This fills a gap in arXiv/math:0203060, Subsection 9.3. We also show that lifting of semisimple cosemisimple Hopf algebras is a fully faithful functor, and prove that lifting induces an isomorphism on Picard and Brauer-Pic…
We study actions of semisimple Hopf algebras H on Weyl algebras A over a field of characteristic zero. We show that the action of H on A must factor through a group algebra; in other words, if H acts inner faithfully on A, then H is cocommutative. The techniques used include reduction modulo a prime number and the study of semisimple cosemisimple Hopf actions on division algebras.
We produce an explicit embedding of the planar algebra of the Drinfeld double of a finite-dimensional, semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra $H$ into the two-cabling of the planar algebra of the dual Hopf algebra $H^*$ and characterise the image.
We study the group of group-like elements of a weak Hopf algebra and derive an analogue of Radford's formula for the fourth power of the antipode S, which implies that the antipode has a finite order modulo a trivial automorphism. We find a sufficient condition in terms of Tr(S^2) for a weak Hopf algebra to be semisimple, discuss relation between semisimplicity and cosemisimplicity, and apply our results to show that a dynamical twisting deformation of a semisimple Hopf algebra is cosemisimple.
It is an open question whether the smash product of a semisimple Hopf algebra and a semiprime module algebra is semiprime. In this paper we show that the smash product of a commutative semiprime module algebra over a semisimple cosemisimple Hopf algebra is semiprime. In particular we show that the central $H$-invariant elements of the Martindale ring of quotients of a module algebra form a von Neumann regular and self-injective ring whenever $A$ is semiprime. For a semiprime Goldie PI $H$-module algebra $A$ with central invariants we show that $\AH$ is semiprime if and only if the $H$-action c…
One of the classical notions of group theory is the notion of the exponent of a group. The exponent of a group is the least common multiple of orders of its elements. In this paper we generalize the notion of exponent to Hopf algebras. We give five equivalent definitions of the exponent. Two of them are: 1) the exponent of H equals the order of the Drinfeld element u of the quantum double D(H); 2) the exponent of H is the order of the squared brading acting in the tensor square of the regular representation of D(H). We show that the exponent is invariant under twisting. We prove that for semis…
Let $k$ be a field, and $H$ a Hopf algebra with bijective antipode. If $H$ is commutative, noetherian, semisimple and cosemisimple, then the category ${}_{H}{\mathcal {YD}}^H$ of Yetter-Drinfeld modules is semisimple. We also prove a similar statement for the category of Long dimodules, without the assumption that $H$ is commutative.
We prove that every semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension less than 60 over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero is either upper or lower semisolvable up to a cocycle twist.
We recapture Kuperberg's numerical invariant of 3-manifolds associated to a semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra through a `planar algebra construction'. A result of possibly independent interest, used during the proof, which relates duality in planar graphs and Hopf algebras, is the subject of a final section.
We show that semisimple Hopf algebras having a self-dual faithful irreducible comodule of dimension 2 are always obtained as abelian extensions with quotient Z_2. We prove that nontrivial Hopf algebras arising in this way can be regarded as deformations of binary polyhedral groups and describe its category of representations. We also prove a strengthening of a result of Nichols and Richmond on cosemisimple Hopf algebras with a 2-dimensional irreducible comodule in the finite dimensional context. Finally, we give some applications to the classification of certain classes of semisimple Hopf alge…
The objects of study in this paper are Hopf algebras $H$ which are finitely generated algebras over an algebraically closed field and are extensions of a commutative Hopf algebra by a finite dimensional Hopf algebra. Basic structural and homological properties are recalled and classes of examples are listed. Bounds are obtained on the dimensions of simple $H$-modules, and the structure of $H$ is shown to be severely constrained when the finite dimensional extension is semisimple and cosemisimple.
In a previous paper we prove that any semisimple triangular Hopf algebra A over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 (say the field of complex numbers C) is obtained from a finite group after twisting the ordinary comultiplication of its group algebra in the sense of Drinfeld; that is A=C[G]^J for some finite group G and a twist J\in C[G]\ot C[G]. In this paper we explicitly describe the representation theory of co-triangular semisimple Hopf algebras A^*=(C[G]^J)^* in terms of representations of some associated groups. As a corollary we prove that Kaplansky's 6th conjecture from 1…
We defined (n+1)-ary derivations of $n$-ary algebras. We described (n+1)-derivations of simple and semisimple finite-dimensional Filippov algebras over algebraically closed field zero characteristic. We constructed new examples of non-trivial (n+1)-ary derivations of Filippov algebras.
We explain that a new theorem of Deligne on symmetric tensor categories implies, in a straightforward manner, that any finite dimensional triangular Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero has Chevalley property, and in particular the list of finite dimensional triangular Hopf algebras over such a field given in math.QA/0008232, math.QA/0101049 is complete. We also use Deligne's theorem to settle a number of questions about triangular Hopf algebras, raised in our previous publications, and generalize Deligne's result to nondegenerate semisimple categories in char…
Let $p,q$ be prime numbers with $p>q^3$, and $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain the structure theorems for semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $pq^3$.
We discuss some algebraic aspects of quantum permutation groups, working over arbitrary fields. If $K$ is any characteristic zero field, we show that there exists a universal cosemisimple Hopf algebra coacting on the diagonal algebra $K^n$: this is a refinement of Wang's universality theorem for the (compact) quantum permutation group. We also prove a structural result for Hopf algebras having a non-ergodic coaction on the diagonal algebra $K^n$, on which we determine the possible group gradings when $K$ is algebraically closed and has characteristic zero.
Masuoka proved that for a prime p, semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension 2p over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0, are trivial (i.e. are either group algebras or the dual of group algebras). Westreich and the second author obtained the same result for dimension 3p, and then pushed the analysis further and among the rest obtained the same result for semisimple Hopf algebras H of dimension pq so that H and H^* are of Frobenius type (i.e. the dimensions of their irreducible representations divide the dimension of H). They concluded with the conjecture that any semisimple Hopf a…
Using the standard filtration associated with a generalized lifting method, we determine all finite-dimensional Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero whose coradical generates a Hopf subalgebra isomorphic to the smallest non-pointed non-cosemisimple Hopf algebra ${\mathcal{K}}$ and the corresponding infinitesimal module is an indecomposable object in ${}^{\mathcal{K}}_{\mathcal{K}}\mathcal{YD}$ (we assume that the diagrams are Nichols algebras). As a byproduct, we obtain new Nichols algebras of dimension 8 and new Hopf algebras of dimension 64.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. In this paper, we obtain the structure theorems for semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $p^2q^2$ over $k$, where $p,q$ are prime numbers with $p^2<q$. As an application, we also obtain the structure theorems for semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $9p^2$ and $25q^2$ for all primes $3\neq p$ and $5\neq q$.
Let H be a Hopf algebra of dimension pq over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, where p <= q are odd primes. Suppose that S is the antipode of H. If H is not semisimple, then S^{4p}=id_H and Tr(S^{2p}) is an integer divisible by p^2. In particular, if dim H = p^2, we prove that H is isomorphic to a Taft algebra. We then complete the classification for the Hopf algebras of dimension p^2.
One of the most fundamental problems in the theory of finite- dimensional Hopf algebras is their classification over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. This problem is extremely difficult, hence people restrict it to certain classes of Hopf algebras, e.g. to semisimple ones. Semisimple Hopf algebras deserve to be considered as "quantum" analogue of finite groups, but even so, the problem remains extremely hard (even in low dimensions) and very little is known. A great boost to the theory of Hopf algebras was given by Drinfeld who invented the fundamental class of (quasi)trian…
Let $p,q$ be prime numbers with $p^4<q$, and $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We show that semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $p^2q^2$ can be constructed either from group algebras and their duals by means of extensions, or from Radford biproduct $R#kG$, where $kG$ is the group algebra of group $G$ of order $p^2$, $R$ is a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld Hopf algebra in ${}^{kG}_{kG}\mathcal{YD}$ of dimension $q^2$. As an application, the special case that the structure of semisimple Hopf algebras of dimension $4q^2$ is given.
In this paper, we obtain a canonical central element $ν_H$ for each semi-simple quasi-Hopf algebra $H$ over any field $k$ and prove that $ν_H$ is invariant under gauge transformations. We show that if $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero then for any irreducible representation of $H$ which affords the character $χ$, $χ(ν_H)$ takes only the values 0, 1 or -1, moreover if $H$ is a Hopf algebra or a twisted quantum double of a finite group then $χ(ν_H)$ is the corresponding Frobenius-Schur Indicator. We also prove an analog of a Theorem of Larson-Radford for split semi-simple quasi-…
Let $q$ be a prime number, $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, and $H$ a semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension $2q^3$. This paper proves that $H$ is always semisolvable. That is, such Hopf algebras can be obtained by (a number of) extensions from group algebras or duals of group algebras.
The main goal of this paper is to investigate the structure of Hopf algebras with the property that either its Jacobson radical is a Hopf ideal or its coradical is a subalgebra. In order to do that we define the Hochschild cohomology of an algebra in an abelian monoidal category. Then we characterize those algebras which have dimension less than or equal to 1 with respect to Hochschild cohomology. Now let us consider a Hopf algebra A such that its Jacobson radical J is a nilpotent Hopf ideal and H:=A/J is a semisimple algebra. By using our homological results, we prove that the canonical proje…
Under suitable assumptions on the base field, we prove that a commutative semisimple Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebra over a finite abelian group is trivial, i.e., is an ordinary Hopf algebra, if its dimension is relatively prime to the order of the finite abelian group. Furthermore, we prove that a finite-dimensional cocommutative cosemisimple Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebra contains a trivial Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf subalgebra of dimension greater than one, at least if the Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebra itself has dimension greater than one.
We prove that, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, a semisimple Hopf algebra that has a nontrivial self-dual simple module must have even dimension. This generalizes a classical result of W. Burnside. As an application, we show under the same assumptions that a semisimple Hopf algebra that has a simple module of even dimension must itself have even dimension.
We give a Clifford correspondence for an algebra A over an algebraically closed field, that is an algorithm for constructing some finite-dimensional simple A-modules from simple modules for a subalgebra and endomorphism algebras. This applies to all finite-dimensional simple A-modules in the case that A is finite-dimensional and semisimple with a given semisimple subalgebra. We discuss connections between our work and earlier results, with a view towards applications particularly to finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebras.
Let H be a semisimple (so, finite dimensional) Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero and let A be a commutative domain over k. We show that if A arises as an H-module algebra via an inner faithful H-action, then H must be a group algebra. This answers a question of E. Kirkman and J. Kuzmanovich and partially answers a question of M. Cohen. The main results of this article extend to working over k of positive characteristic. On the other hand, we obtain results on Hopf actions on Weyl algebras as a consequence of the main theorem.
In this paper we study the isotypic decomposition of the regular module of a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a semisimple Hopf algebra, the idempotents realizing the isotypic decomposition can be explicitly expressed in terms of characters and the Haar integral. In this paper we investigate Hopf algebras with the Chevalley property, which are not necessarily semisimple. We find explicit expressions for idempotents in terms of Hopf-algebraic data, where the Haar integral is replaced by the regular character of the dual Hopf algebra.…
Let H be a finite dimensional non-semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. If H has no nontrivial skew-primitive elements, we find some bounds for the dimension of H_1, the second term in the coradical filtration of H. Using these results, we are able to show that every Hopf algebra of dimension 14 is semisimple and thus isomorphic to a group algebra or the dual of a group algebra. Also a Hopf algebra of dimension pq where p and q are odd primes with p<q and q less than or equal to 1 + 3p, and also less than or equal to 13, is semisimple and thus a grou…
To any Hopf algebra H we associate two commutative Hopf algebras, which we call the first and second lazy homology Hopf algebras of H. These algebras are related to the lazy cohomology groups based on the so-called lazy cocycles of H by universal coefficient theorems. When H is a group algebra, then its lazy homology can be expressed in terms of the 1- and 2-homology of the group. When H is a cosemisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, then its first lazy homology is the Hopf algebra of the universal abelian grading group of the category of corepresenta…
A fundamental problem in the theory of Hopf algebras is the classification and construction of finite-dimensional (minimal) triangular Hopf algebras (A,R) introduced by Drinfeld. Only recently Etingof and the author completely solved this problem for semisimple A over algebraically closed fields of characteristics 0 and p>>dim(A) (any p if one assumes that A is also cosemisimple). In this paper we take the first step towards solving this problem for finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. We first prove that the fourth power of the ant…
Let $H$ be a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. If $H$ is not semisimple and $\dim(H)=2n$ for some odd integer $n$, then $H$ or $H^*$ is not unimodular. Using this result, we prove that if $\dim(H)=2p$ for some odd prime $p$, then $H$ is semisimple. This completes the classification of Hopf algebras of dimension $2p$.
We parameterize the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of a class of pointed Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero by dominant characters. The Hopf algebras we are considering arise in the work of N. Andruskiewitsch and the second author. Special cases are the multiparameter deformations of the enveloping algebras of semisimple Lie algebras where the deforming parameters are not roots of unity and some of their finite-dimensional versions in the root of unity case.
We prove a structure theorem for Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebras over groups of prime order that are nontrivial, cocommutative, and cosemisimple: Under certain assumptions on the base field, these algebras can be decomposed into a tensor product of the dual group ring of the group of prime order and an ordinary group ring of some other group. This tensor product is a crossed product as an algebra and an ordinary tensor product as a coalgebra. In particular, the dimension of such a Yetter-Drinfel'd Hopf algebra is divisible by the prime under consideration. We also find explicit examples of such…
Let $H$ be a non-semisimple Hopf algebra with antipode $S$ of dimension $pq$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 where $p \le q$ are odd primes. We prove that $\Tr(S^{2p})=p^2d$ where $d \equiv pq \pmod{4}$. As a consequence, if $p,q$ are twin primes, then any Hopf algebra of dimension $pq$ is semisimple.
Kaplansky conjectured that if H is a finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0, then H is of Frobenius type (i.e. if V is an irreducible representation of H then dimV divides dimH). It was proved by Montgomery and Witherspoon that the conjecture is true for H of dimension p^n, p prime, and by Nichols and Richmond that if H has a 2-dimensional representation then dimH is even. In this paper we first prove that if V is an irreducible representation of D(H), the Drinfeld double of any finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebra H over k, th…
Let A be a commutative unital algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic not equal to 2, whose generators form a finite-dimensional subspace V, with no nontrivial homogeneous quadratic relations. Let Q be a Hopf algebra that coacts on A inner-faithfully, while leaving V invariant. We prove that Q must be commutative when either: (i) the coaction preserves a non-degenerate bilinear form on V; or (ii) Q is co-semisimple, finite-dimensional, and char(k)=0.
The obstructions for an arbitrary fusion algebra to be a fusion algebra of some semisimple monoidal category are constructed. Those obstructions lie in groups which are closely related to the Hochschild cohomology of fusion algebras with coefficients in the K-theory of the ground (algebraically closed) field.
About $39$ years ago, Kaplansky conjectured that the dimension of a semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero is divisible by the dimensions of its simple modules. Although it still remains open, some partial answers to this conjecture play an important role in classifying semisimple Hopf algebras. This paper focuses on the recent development of Kaplansky's sixth conjecture and its applications in classifying semisimple Hopf algebras.
We complete the classification of Hopf algebras of dimension 16 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show that a non-semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension 16, has either the Chevalley property or its dual is pointed.
We prove that a depth two Hopf subalgebra K of a semisimple Hopf algebra H is normal (where the ground field $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero). This means on the one hand that a Hopf subalgebra is normal when inducing (then restricting) modules several times as opposed to one time creates no new simple constituents. This point of view was taken in the paper http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0409346 which established a normality result in case H and K are finite group algebras. On the other hand this means that K is normal in H when H | K is a Galois extension with respect to action o…
In this paper, we prove that a non-semisimple Hopf algebra H of dimension 4p with p an odd prime over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero is pointed provided H contains more than two group-like elements. In particular, we prove that non-semisimple Hopf algebras of dimensions 20, 28 and 44 are pointed or their duals are pointed, and this completes the classification of Hopf algebras in these dimensions.
Let H be a Hopf algebra of dimension pq over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, where p, q are odd primes with p < q < 4p+12. We prove that H is semisimple and thus isomorphic to a group algebra, or the dual of a group algebra.
Let $H$ be a semisimple Hopf algebras over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $0.$ We define Hopf algebraic analogues of commutators and their generalizations and show how they are related to $H',$ the Hopf algebraic analogue of the commutator subgroup. We introduce a family of central elements of $H',$ which on one hand generate $H'$ and on the other hand give rise to a family of functionals on $H.$ When $H=kG,\,G$ a finite group, these functionals are counting functions on $G.$ It is not clear yet to what extent they measure any specific invariant of the Hopf algebra. Howeve…
Let A be a comodule algebra for a finite dimensional Hopf algebra K over an algebraically closed field k, and let A^K be the subalgebra of invariants. Let Z be a central subalgebra in A, which is a domain with quotient field Q. Assume that Q\otimes_Z A is a central simple algebra over Q, and either A is a finitely generated torsion-free Z-module and Z is integrally closed in Q, or A is a finite projective Z-module. Then we show that A and Z are integral over the subring of central invariants Z\cap A^K. More generally, we show that this statement is valid under the same assumptions if Z is a re…
When k is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and H is a non-semisimple monomial Hopf algebra, we show that all Galois objects over H are determined up to H-comodule algebra isomorphism by their polynomial H-identities, extending a previous result by Kassel.
Given a a Hopf algebra $H$, its left coideal subalgebra $A$ and a non-zero multiplicative functional $μ$ on $A$, we define the space of left $μ$-integrals $L^A_μ\subset A$. We observe that $\dim L^A_μ=1$ if $A$ is a Frobenius algebra and we conclude this equality for finite dimensional left coideal subalgebras of a weakly finite Hopf algebra. In general we prove that if $\dim L^A_μ>0$ then $\dim A <\infty$. Given a group-like element $g\in H$ we define the space $L^g_{ A}\subset A'$ of $g$-cointegrals on $ A$ and linking this concept with the theory of $μ$-integrals we observe that: - every se…
Actions of semisimple Hopf algebras H over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero on commutative domains were classified recently by the authors. The answer turns out to be very simple- if the action is inner faithful, then H has to be a group algebra. The present article contributes to the non-semisimple case, which is much more complicated. Namely, we study actions of finite dimensional (not necessarily semisimple) Hopf algebras on commutative domains, particularly when H is pointed of finite Cartan type. The work begins by reducing to the case where H acts inner faithfully on …
