We give a Clifford correspondence for an algebra A over an algebraically closed field, that is an algorithm for constructing some finite-dimensional simple A-modules from simple modules for a subalgebra and endomorphism algebras. This applies to all finite-dimensional simple A-modules in the case that A is finite-dimensional and semisimple with a given semisimple subalgebra. We discuss connections between our work and earlier results, with a view towards applications particularly to finite-dimensional semisimple Hopf algebras.
The classical Clifford correspondence for normal subgroups is considered in the more general setting of semisimple Hopf algebras. We prove that this correspondence still holds if the extension determined by the normal Hopf subalgebra is cocentral.
By viewing Clifford algebras as algebras in some suitable symmetric Gr-categories, Albuquerque and Majid were able to give a new derivation of some well known results about Clifford algebras and to generalize them. Along the same line, Bulacu observed that Clifford algebras are weak Hopf algebras in the aforementioned categories and obtained other interesting properties. The aim of this paper is to study generalized Clifford algebras in a similar manner and extend the results of Albuquerque, Majid and Bulacu to the generalized setting. In particular, by taking full advantage of the gauge trans…
We introduce a generalization, called a skew Clifford algebra, of a Clifford algebra, and relate these new algebras to the notion of graded skew Clifford algebra that was defined in 2010. In particular, we examine homogenizations of skew Clifford algebras, and determine which skew Clifford algebras can be homogenized to create Artin-Schelter regular algebras. Just as (classical) Clifford algebras are the Poincar\' e-Birkhoff-Witt (PBW) deformations of exterior algebras, skew Clifford algebras are the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded PBW deformations of quantum exterior algebras. We also determine the pos…
We show that in finite dimensions, the Berezin expectation on an exterior algebra corresponds to the trace on a Clifford algebra, the correspondence being mediated by what is effectively a version of antinormal ordering.
We prove that if $A$ is a regular graded skew Clifford algebra and is a twist of a regular graded Clifford algebra $B$ by an automorphism, then the subalgebra of $A$ generated by a certain normalizing sequence of homogeneous degree-two elements is a twist of a polynomial ring by an automorphism, and is a skew polynomial ring. We also present an example that demonstrates that this can fail when $A$ is not a twist of $B$.
Viewing the complex Clifford algebra $C(V)$ of a real inner product space $V$ as a superalgebra, we offer several proofs of the fact that if $W$ is a subspace of the complexification of $V$ then the supercommutant of the Clifford algebra $C(W)$ is precisely the Clifford algebra $C(W^{\perp})$.
We compute point schemes of some regular algebras using (Wolfram) Mathematica. These algebras are Ore extensions of regular graded skew Clifford algebras of global dimension 3.
The effect of some properties of twisted groups on the associated algebras, particularly Cayley-Dickson and Clifford algebras. It is conjectured that the Hilbert space of square-summable sequences is a Cayley-Dickson algebra.
For some monoids, we give a method of composing invertibility preserving maps associated to "partial involutions." Also, we define the notion of "determinants for finite dimensional algebras over a field." As examples, we give invertibility preserving maps for Clifford algebras into a field and determinants for Clifford algebras into a field, where we assume that the algebras are generated by less than or equal to 5 generators over the field. On the other hand, "determinant formulas for Clifford algebras" are known. We understand these formulas as an expression that connects invertibility pres…
In this paper we find a Clifford algebra associated to generalized Fibonacci quaternions. In this way, we provide a nice algorithm to obtain a division quaternion algebra starting from a quaternion non-division algebra and vice-versa.
We prove that the alternative Clifford algebra of a nondegenerate ternary quadratic form is an octonion algebra over the ring of polynomials in one variable over the field of definition.
We analyze the purely algebraic antidual $C'(V)$ of the complex Clifford algebra $C(V)$ over a real inner product space $V$. In particular, we introduce a partially defined product in $C'(V)$ and study its properties.
We show equivalence of two old classification theorems: Dickson's classification of quadratic forms over ${\mathbb F}_2$, and Chevalley's classification of real Clifford algebras.
All 7-dimensional subalgebras of the 8-dimensional Clifford algebra over the field C of complex numbers are found. Canonical bases are used throughout the determination. It is found that the 8-dimensional Clifford algebra over C has exactly eight 7-dimensional subalgebras and each of these eight is over the complex numbers. It follows that the 8-dimensional Clifford algebra over C has no 7-dimensional subalgebra over the real numbers. Another consequence is that the eight 7-dimensional subalgebras of the 8-dimentional Clifford over C are in fact 7-dimensional subalgebras of all greater dimensi…
Some connections between quadratic forms over the field of two elements, Clifford algebras of quadratic forms over the real numbers, real graded division algebras, and twisted group algebras will be highlighted. This allows to revisit real Clifford algebras in terms of the Arf invariant of the associated quadratic forms over the field of two elements, and give new proofs of some classical results.
We prove that quadratic regular algebras of global dimension three on degree-one generators are related to graded skew Clifford algebras. In particular, we prove that almost all such algebras may be constructed as a twist of either a regular graded skew Clifford algebra or of an Ore extension of a regular graded skew Clifford algebra of global dimension two. In so doing, we classify all quadratic regular algebras of global dimension three that have point scheme either a nodal cubic curve or a cuspidal cubic curve in P^2.
It is shown that the 16-dimensional Clifford algebra over any field has no one 15-dimensional subalgebra. Canonical bases are used throughout the determination.
In this paper, theory and construction of spinor representations of real Clifford algebras $\cl_{p,q}$ in minimal left ideals are reviewed. Connection with a general theory of semisimple rings is shown. The actual computations can be found in, for example, [2].
Let $V$ be a real inner product space and $C[V]$ its ${\rm C}^*$ Clifford algebra. We prove that if $Z$ is a subspace of $V$ then $C[Z^{\perp}]$ coincides with the supercommutant of $C[Z]$ in $C[V]$.
We study the representation theoretic results of the binary cubic generic Clifford algebra $\mathcal C$, which is an Artin-Schelter regular algebra of global dimension five. In particular, we show that $\mathcal C$ is a PI algebra of PI degree three and compute its point variety and discriminant ideals. As a consequence, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on a binary cubic form $f$ for the associated Clifford algebra $\mathcal C_f$ to be an Azumaya algebra.
Albuquerque and Majid have shown how to view Clifford algebras $\cl_{p,q}$ as twisted group rings whereas Chernov has observed that Clifford algebras can be viewed as images of group algebras of certain 2-groups modulo an ideal generated by a nontrivial central idempotent. Ablamowicz and Fauser have introduced a special transposition anti-automorphism of $\cl_{p,q}$, which they called a "transposition", which reduces to reversion in algebras $\cl_{p,0}$ and to conjugation in algebras $\cl_{0,q}$. The purpose of this paper is to bring these concepts together in an attempt to investigate how the…
An algebraic description of basic discrete symmetries (space reversal P, time reversal T and their combination PT) is studied. Discrete subgroups of orthogonal groups of multidimensional spaces over the fields of real and complex numbers are considered in terms of fundamental automorphisms of Clifford algebras. In accordance with a division ring structure, a complete classification of automorphisms groups is established for the Clifford algebras over the field of real numbers. The correspondence between eight double coverings (Dabrowski groups) of the orthogonal group and eight types of the re…
{\sc CLIFFORD} is a Maple package for computations in Clifford algebras $\cl (B)$ of an arbitrary symbolic or numeric bilinear form B. In particular, B may have a non-trivial antisymmetric part. It is well known that the symmetric part g of B determines a unique (up to an isomorphism) Clifford structure on $\cl(B)$ while the antisymmetric part of B changes the multilinear structure of $\cl(B).$ As an example, we verify Helmstetter's formula which relates Clifford product in $\cl(g)$ to the Clifford product in $\cl(B).$ Experimentation with Clifford algebras $\cl(B)$ of a general form~B is high…
Considering tensor products of special commutative algebras and general real Clifford algebras, we arrive at extended Clifford algebras. We have found that there are five types of extended Clifford algebras. The class of extended Clifford algebras is closed with respect to the tensor product.
We define a canonical quadratic pair on the Clifford algebra of an algebra with quadratic pair over a field. This allows us to extend to the characteristic 2 case the notion of trialitarian triples, from which we derive a characterization of totally decomposable quadratic pairs in degree 8. We also describe trialitarian triples involving algebras of small Schur index.
A generalization of the term "generalized Clifford algebras" (as appears in papers on advances in applied Clifford algebras) is introduced. This algebra is studied by means of structure theory of central simple algebras. A graph theoretical approach is proposed for studying the generating set of this algebra in case where the prime number under discussion is three. Finally, it is shown how to obtain solutions in to the equation $αY^3=αX_1^3+βX_2^3+α^2 β^2 X_3^3$ in $\mathbb{Z}[ρ]$ where $ρ$ is the primitive third root of unity.
In "A note on generalized Clifford algebras and representations" (Caenepeel, S.; Van Oystaeyen, F., Comm. Algebra 17 (1989) no. 1, 93--102.) generalized Clifford algebras were introduced via Clifford representations; these correspond to projective representations of a finite group (Abelian), $G$ say, such that the corresponding twisted group ring has minimal center. The latter then translates to the fact that the corresponding 2-cocycle allows a minimal (none!) number of ray classes and this forces a decomposition of $G$ in cyclic components in a suitable way, cf. Zmud, M., Symplectic geometri…
In this paper, we introduce a ring isomorphism between the Clifford algebra $C\ell_{1,2}$ and a ring of matrices. By such a ring isomorphism, we introduce the concept of the Moore-Penrose inverse in Clifford algebra $C\ell_{1,2}$. Using the Moore-Penrose inverse, we solve the linear equation $axb=d$ in $C\ell_{1,2}$. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for two numbers in $C\ell_{1,2}$ to be similar.
Geometric algebra was initiated by W.K. Clifford over 130 years ago. It unifies all branches of physics, and has found rich applications in robotics, signal processing, ray tracing, virtual reality, computer vision, vector field processing, tracking, geographic information systems and neural computing. This tutorial explains the basics of geometric algebra, with concrete examples of the plane, of 3D space, of spacetime, and the popular conformal model. Geometric algebras are ideal to represent geometric transformations in the general framework of Clifford groups (also called versor or Lipschit…
In this article we study graded Clifford algebras with a gradation preserving action of automorphisms given by $H_p$, the Heisenberg group of order $p^3$ with $p$ prime. After reviewing results in dimensions 3 and 4, we will determine the graded Clifford algebras that are AS-regular algebras of global dimension 5 and generalize certain results to arbitrary dimension $p$. More specifically, we prove that there is a nice correspondence between $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{F}_p}$ and the algebras isomorphic to the quantum space $\mathbb{C}_{-1}[x_0,\ldots,x_{p-1}]$.
A classification of idempotents in Clifford algebras C(p,q) is presented. It is shown that using isomorphisms between Clifford algebras C(p,q) and appropriate matrix rings, it is possible to classify idempotents in any Clifford algebra into continuous families. These families include primitive idempotents used to generate minimal one sided ideals in Clifford algebras. Some low dimensional examples are discussed.
While the Clifford (geometric) algebra Fourier Transform (CFT) is global, we introduce here the local Clifford (geometric) algebra (GA) wavelet concept. We show how for $n=2,3 (\mod 4)$ continuous $Cl_n$-valued admissible wavelets can be constructed using the similitude group $SIM(n)$. We strictly aim for real geometric interpretation, and replace the imaginary unit $i \in \C$ therefore with a GA blade squaring to $-1$. Consequences due to non-commutativity arise. We express the admissibility condition in terms of a $Cl_{n}$ CFT and then derive a set of important properties such as dilation, t…
If $V$ is a finite-dimensional unital commutative (maybe nonassociative) algebra carrying an associative positive definite bilinear form then there exist a nonzero idempotent $c\ne e$ ($e$ being the algebra unit) of the shortest possible length $|c|^2$. In particular, $|c|^2\le \frac12|e|^2$. We prove that the equality holds exactly when $V$ is a Jordan algebra of Clifford type.
This paper explains how, following the representation of 3D crystallographic space groups in Clifford's geometric algebra, it is further possible to similarly represent the 162 so called subperiodic groups of crystallography in Clifford's geometric algebra. A new compact geometric algebra group representation symbol is constructed, which allows to read off the complete set of geometric algebra generators. For clarity moreover the chosen generators are stated explicitly. The group symbols are based on the representation of point groups in geometric algebra by versors (Clifford monomials, Lipsch…
These are lecture notes for a course on the theory of Clifford algebras, with special emphasis on their wide range of applications in mathematics and physics. Clifford algebra is introduced both through a conventional tensor algebra construction (then called geometric algebra) with geometric applications in mind, as well as in an algebraically more general form which is well suited for combinatorics, and for defining and understanding the numerous products and operations of the algebra. The various applications presented include vector space and projective geometry, orthogonal maps and spinors…
In the field of applied mathematics the Fourier transform has developed into an important tool. It is a powerful method for solving partial differential equations. The Fourier transform provides also a technique for signal analysis where the signal from the original domain is transformed to the spectral or frequency domain. In the frequency domain many characteristics of the signal are revealed. With these facts in mind, we extend the Fourier transform in geometric algebra. We explicitly show detailed properties of the real Clifford geometric algebra Fourier transform (CFT), which we subsequen…
We classify and construct irreducible completely splittable representations of affine and finite Hecke-Clifford algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2.
A set of valuable universal similarity factorization equalities are established over complex Clifford algebras $\Cn.$ Through them matrix representations of complex Clifford algebras $\Cn$ can directly be derived, and their properties can easily be determined.
A variety of universal similarity factorization equalities over real Clifford algebras ${\cal R}_{p,q}$ are established. On the basis of these equalities, real, complex and quaternion matrix representations of elements in ${\cal R}_{p,q}$ can be explicitly determined.
It is known that Clifford (geometric) algebra offers a geometric interpretation for square roots of -1 in the form of blades that square to minus 1. This extends to a geometric interpretation of quaternions as the side face bivectors of a unit cube. Research has been done [S. J. Sangwine, Biquaternion (Complexified Quaternion) Roots of -1, Adv. Appl. Cliford Alg. 16(1), pp. 63-68, 2006.] on the biquaternion roots of -1, abandoning the restriction to blades. Biquaternions are isomorphic to the Clifford (geometric) algebra $Cl_{3}$ of $\R^3$. All these roots of -1 find immediate applications in …
We give another version of Huang's proof that an induced subgraph of the n-dimensional cube graph containing over half the vertices has maximal degree at least $\sqrt{n}$, which implies the Sensitivity Conjecture. This argument uses Clifford algebras of positive definite signature in a natural way. We also prove a weighted version of the result.
In this paper, we consider inner automorphisms that leave invariant fixed subspaces of real and complex Clifford algebras -- subspaces of fixed grades and subspaces determined by the reversion and the grade involution. We present groups of elements that define such inner automorphisms and study their properties. Some of these Lie groups can be interpreted as generalizations of Clifford, Lipschitz, and spin groups. We study the corresponding Lie algebras. Some of the results can be reformulated for the case of more general algebras -- graded central simple algebras or graded central simple alge…
We give a complete study of the Clifford-Weyl algebra ${\mathcal C}(n,2k)$ from Bose-Fermi statistics, including Hochschild cohomology (with coefficients in itself). We show that ${\mathcal C}(n,2k)$ is rigid when $n$ is even or when $k \neq 1$. We find all non-trivial deformations of ${\mathcal C}(2n+1,2)$ and study their representations.
