The main goal of this paper is to investigate the structure of Hopf algebras with the property that either its Jacobson radical is a Hopf ideal or its coradical is a subalgebra. In order to do that we define the Hochschild cohomology of an algebra in an abelian monoidal category. Then we characterize those algebras which have dimension less than or equal to 1 with respect to Hochschild cohomology. Now let us consider a Hopf algebra A such that its Jacobson radical J is a nilpotent Hopf ideal and H:=A/J is a semisimple algebra. By using our homological results, we prove that the canonical projection of A on H has a section which is an H-colinear algebra map. Furthermore, if H is cosemisimple too, then we can choose this section to be an (H,H)-bicolinear algebra morphism. This fact allows us to describe A as a `generalized bosonization' of a certain algebra R in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over H. As an application we give a categorical proof of Radford's result about Hopf algebras with projections. We also consider the dual situation. In this case, many results that we obtain hold true for a large enough class of H-module coalgebras, where H is a cosemisimple Hopf algebra.
By a theorem of Majid, every monoidal category with a neutral quasi-monoidal functor to finitely-generated and projective $\Bbbk$-modules gives rise to a coquasi-bialgebra. We prove that if the category is also rigid, then the associated coquasi-bialgebra admits a preantipode, providing in this way an analogue for coquasi-bialgebras of Ulbrich's reconstruction theorem for Hopf algebras. When $\Bbbk$ is field, this allows us to characterize coquasi-Hopf algebras as well in terms of rigidity of finite-dimensional corepresentations.
Multiplier bimonoids (or bialgebras) in arbitrary braided monoidal categories are defined. They are shown to possess monoidal categories of comodules and modules. These facts are explained by the structures carried by their induced functors.
Incidence coalgebras of categories in the sense of Joni and Rota are studied, specifically cases where a monoidal product on the category turns these into (weak) bialgebras. The overlap with the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras and that of Hopf quivers is discussed, and examples including trees, skew shapes, Milner's bigraphs and crossed modules are considered.
A first goal of this paper is to precisely relate the homotopy theories of bialgebras and $E_2$-algebras. For this, we construct a conservative and fully faithful $\infty$-functor from pointed conilpotent homotopy bialgebras to augmented $E_2$-algebras which consists in an appropriate "cobar" construction. Then we prove that the (derived) formal moduli problem of homotopy bialgebras structures on a bialgebra is equivalent to the (derived) formal moduli problem of $E_2$-algebra structures on this "cobar" construction. We show consequently that the $E_3$-algebra structure on the higher Hochschil…
For a bialgebra $L$ coacting on a $\Bbbk$-algebra $A$, a classical result states that $A$ is a right $L$-comodule algebra if and only if $A$ is an algebra in the monoidal category $\mathcal{M}^{L}$ of right $L$-comodules; the former notion is formulaic while the latter is categorical. We generalize this result to the setting of weak bialgebras $H$. The category $\mathcal{M}^H$ admits a monoidal structure by work of Nill and Böhm-Caenepeel-Janssen, but the algebras in $\mathcal{M}^H$ are not canonically $\Bbbk$-algebras. Nevertheless, we prove that there is an isomorphism between the category o…
We show that the Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomology of a Hopf algebra determines its Hochschild cohomology, and in particular its Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomological dimension bounds its Hochschild cohomological dimension, with equality of the dimensions when the Hopf algebra is cosemisimple of Kac type. Together with some general considerations on free Yetter-Drinfeld modules over adjoint Hopf subalgebras and the monoidal invariance of Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomology, this is used to show that both Gerstenhaber-Schack and Hochschild cohomological dimensions of the coordinate algebra of the quantum p…
We study the duplicial objects of Dwyer and Kan, which generalize the cyclic objects of Connes. We describe duplicial objects in terms of the decalage comonads, and we give a conceptual account of the construction of duplicial objects due to Bohm and Stefan. This is done in terms of a 2-categorical generalization of Hochschild homology. We also study duplicial structure on nerves of categories, bicategories, and monoidal categories.
We prove that a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra with the dual Chevalley Property over a field of characteristic zero is quasi-isomorphic to a Radford-Majid bosonization whenever the third Hochschild cohomology group in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules of its diagram with coefficients in the base field vanishes. Moreover we show that this vanishing occurs in meaningful examples where the diagram is a Nichols algebra.
We show that the braided Hochschild cohomology, of an algebra in a suitably algebraic braided monoidal category, admits a graded ring structure under which it is braided commutative. We then give a canonical identification between the usual Hochschild cohomology ring of a smash product and the (derived) invariants of its braided Hochschild cohomology ring. We apply our results to identify the associative formal deformation theory of a smash product with its formal deformation theory as a module algebra over the given Hopf algebra (when the Hopf algebra is sufficiently semisimple). As a second …
We investigate cofree coalgebras, and limits and colimits of coalgebras in some abelian monoidal categories of interest, such as bimodules over a ring, and modules and comodules over a bialgebra or Hopf algebra. We find concrete generators for the categories of coalgebras in these monoidal categories, and explicitly construct cofree coalgebras, products and limits of coalgebras in each case. This answers an open question of A. Agore on the existence of a cofree coring, and constructs the cofree (co)module coalgebra on a $B$-(co)module, for a bialgebra $B$.
For a set theoretical solution of the Yang-Baxter equation $(X,σ)$, we define a d.g. bialgebra $B=B(X,σ)$, containing the semigroup algebra $A=k\{X\}/\langle xy=zt : σ(x,y)=(z,t)\rangle$, such that $k\otimes_A B\otimes_Ak$ and $\mathrm{Hom}_{A-A}(B,k)$ are respectively the homology and cohomology complexes computing biquandle homology and cohomology defined in \cite{CJKS} and other generalizations of cohomology of rack-quanlde case (for example defined in \cite{CES}). This algebraic structure allow us to show the existence of an associative product in the cohomology of biquandles, and a compar…
The notion of Hochschild cochains induces an assignment from $Aff$, affine DG schemes, to monoidal DG categories. We show that this assignment extends, under some appropriate finiteness conditions, to a functor $\mathbb H: Aff \to AlgBimod(DGCat)$, where the latter denotes the category of monoidal DG categories and bimodules. Now, any functor $\mathbb A: Aff \to AlgBimod(DGCat)$ gives rise, by taking modules, to a theory of sheaves of categories $ShvCat^{\mathbb A}$. In this paper, we study $ShvCat^{\mathbb H}$. Vaguely speaking, this theory categorifies the theory of D-modules, in the same wa…
We study monoidal comonads on a naturally Frobenius map-monoidale $M$ in a monoidal bicategory $\mathcal M$. We regard them as bimonoids in the duoidal hom-category $\mathcal M(M,M)$, and generalize to that setting various conditions distinguishing classical Hopf algebras among bialgebras; in particular, we define a notion of antipode in that context. Assuming the existence of certain conservative functors and the splitting of idempotent 2-cells in $\mathcal M$, we show all these Hopf-like conditions to be equivalent. Our results imply in particular several equivalent characterizations of Hopf…
Based on the novel notion of `weakly counital fusion morphism', regular weak multiplier bimonoids in braided monoidal categories are introduced. They generalize weak multiplier bialgebras over fields and multiplier bimonoids in braided monoidal categories. Under some assumptions the so-called base object of a regular weak multiplier bimonoid is shown to carry a coseparable comonoid structure; hence to possess a monoidal category of bicomodules. In this case, appropriately defined modules over a regular weak multiplier bimonoid are proven to constitute a monoidal category with a strict monoidal…
The theories of (Hopf) bialgebras and weak (Hopf) bialgebras have been introduced for vector space categories over fields and make heavily use of the tensor product. As first generalisations, these notions were formulated for monoidal categories, with braidings if needed. The present authors developed a theory of bimonads and Hopf monads $H$ on arbitrary categories $\mathbb{A}$, employing distributive laws, allowing for a general form of the Fundamental Theorem for Hopf algebras. For $τ$-bimonads $H$, properties of braided (Hopf) bialgebras were captured by requiring a Yang-Baxter operator $τ:…
Given any modular category $\mathcal{C}$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, we extract a sequence $(M_g)_{g\geq 0}$ of $\mathcal{C}$-bimodules. We show that the Hochschild chain complex $CH(\mathcal{C};M_g)$ of $\mathcal{C}$ with coefficients in $M_g$ carries a canonical homotopy coherent projective action of the mapping class group of the surface of genus $g+1$. The ordinary Hochschild complex of $\mathcal{C}$ corresponds to $CH(\mathcal{C};M_0)$. This result is obtained as part of the following more comprehensive topological structure: We construct a symmetric monoidal functor $\mathfra…
