A bicategorical approach to actions of monoidal categories

We characterize in terms of bicategories actions of monoidal categories to representation categories of algebras. For that purpose we introduce cocycles in any 2-category $\K$ and the category of Tambara modules over a monad $B$ in $\K$. We show that in an appropriate setting the above action of categories is given by a 2-cocycle in the Eilenberg-Moore category for the monad $B$. Furthermore, we introduce (co)quasi-bimonads in $\K$ and their respective 2-categories. Weak bimonads and weak Hopf monads

We define a weak bimonad as a monad T on a monoidal category M with the property that the Eilenberg-Moore category M^T is monoidal and the forgetful functor from M^T to M is separable Frobenius. Whenever M is also Cauchy complete, a simple set of axioms is provided, that characterizes the monoidal structure of M^T as a weak lifting of the monoidal structure of M . The relation to bimonads, and the relation to weak bimonoids in a braided monoidal category are revealed. We also discuss antipodes, obtaining the notion of weak Hopf monad.

On the 2-categories of weak distributive laws

A weak mixed distributive law (also called weak entwining structure) in a 2-category consists of a monad and a comonad, together with a 2-cell relating them in a way which generalizes a mixed distributive law due to Beck. We show that a weak mixed distributive law can be described as a compatible pair of a monad and a comonad, in 2-categories extending, respectively, the 2-category of comonads and the 2-category of monads. Frobenius algebras and ambidextrous adjunctions

In this paper we explain the relationship between Frobenius objects in monoidal categories and adjunctions in 2-categories. In particular, we show that every Frobenius object in a monoidal category M arises from an ambijunction (simultaneous left and right adjoints) in some 2-category D into which M fully and faithfully embeds. Since a 2D topological quantum field theory is equivalent to a commutative Frobenius algebra, this result also shows that every 2D TQFT is obtained from an ambijunction in some 2-category. Let $A$ be an algebra in a monoidal category $\Cc$, and let $X$ be an object in $\Cc$. We study $A$-(co)ring structures on the left $A$-module $A\ot X$. These correspond to (co)algebra structures in $EM(\Cc)(A)$, the Eilenberg-Moore category associated to $\Cc$ and $A$. On the iteration of weak wreath products

Based on a study of the 2-category of weak distributive laws, we describe a method of iterating Street's weak wreath product construction. That is, for any 2-category K and for any non-negative integer n, we introduce 2-categories Wdl^{(n)}(K), of (n+1)-tuples of monads in K pairwise related by weak distributive laws obeying the Yang-Baxter equation.
