Given a monoidal category C, an ordinary category M, and a monad T in M, the lifts in a strict sense of a fixed action of C on M to an action of C on the Eilenberg-Moore category of T-modules in M are in a bijective correspondence with certain families of natural transformations, indexed by the objects in the monoidal category C. These families are analogues of distributive laws between monads.
A weak mixed distributive law (also called weak entwining structure) in a 2-category consists of a monad and a comonad, together with a 2-cell relating them in a way which generalizes a mixed distributive law due to Beck. We show that a weak mixed distributive law can be described as a compatible pair of a monad and a comonad, in 2-categories extending, respectively, the 2-category of comonads and the 2-category of monads. Based on this observation, we define a 2-category whose 0-cells are weak mixed distributive laws. In a 2-category K which admits Eilenberg-Moore constructions both for monad…
Using methods of computer algebra, especially Gröbner bases for submodules of free modules over polynomial rings, we solve a classification problem in theory of algebraic operads: we show that the only nontrivial (possibly inhomogeneous) distributive law between the operad of Lie algebras and the operad of commutative associative algebras is given by the Livernet-Loday formula deforming the Poisson operad into the associative operad.
Recently, Boehm and Stefan constructed duplicial (paracyclic) objects from distributive laws between (co)monads. Here we define the category of factorisations of a distributive law, show that it acts on this construction, and give some explicit examples.
Frobenius monoidal functors preserve duals. We show that conversely, (co)monoidal functors between autonomous categories which preserve duals are Frobenius monoidal. We apply this result to linearly distributive functors between autonomous categories.
Skew-monoidal categories arise when the associator and the left and right units of a monoidal category are, in a specific way, not invertible. We prove that the closed skew-monoidal structures on the category of right R-modules are precisely the right bialgebroids over the ring R. These skew-monoidal structures induce quotient skew-monoidal structures on the category of R-R-bimodules and this leads to the following generalization: Opmonoidal monads on a monoidal category correspond to skew-monoidal structures with the same unit object which are compatible with the ordinary monoidal structure b…
We give a framework for combining $n$ monads on the same category via distributive laws satisfying Yang-Baxter equations, extending the classical result of Barr and Wells which combines two monads via one distributive law. We show that this corresponds to iterating $n$-times the process of taking the 2-category of monads in a 2-category, extending the result of Street characterising distributive laws. We show that this framework can be used to construct the free strict $n$-category monad on $n$-dimensional globular sets; we first construct for each $i$ a monad for composition along bounding $i…
We relate weak distributive laws in SetMat to strictly associative (but not strictly unital) pseudoalgebras of the 2-monad (-)^2 on Cat. The corresponding orthogonal factorization systems are characterized by a certain bilinearity property.
Let $U$ be a strong monoidal functor between monoidal categories. If it has both a left adjoint $L$ and a right adjoint $R$, we show that the pair $(R,L)$ is a linearly distributive functor and $(U,U)\dashv (R,L)$ is a linearly distributive adjunction, if and only if $L\dashv U$ is a Hopf adjunction and $U\dashv R$ is a coHopf adjunction. We give sufficient conditions for a strong monoidal $U$ which is part of a (left) Hopf adjunction $L\dashv U$, to have as right adjoint a twisted version of the left adjoint $L$. In particular, the resulting adjunction will be (left) coHopf. One step further,…
We provide a characterization of no-iteration distributive laws in terms of its monads in extensive form only. To do that, it is necessary to take account of both right and left extension systems. We also give, in this right-left perspective, characterizations of the 1-cells and 2-cells in $\mathbf{EM}(K)$ and $\mathbf{Kl}(K)$.
Fix a monoidal category C. The 2-category of monads in the 2-category of C-actegories, colax C-equivarant functors, and C-equivariant natural transformations of colax functors, may be recast in terms of pairs consisting of a usual monad and a distributive law between the monad and the action of C, morphisms of monads respecting the distributive law, and transformations of monads satisfying some compatibility with the actions and distributive laws involved. The monads in this picture may be generalized to actions of monoidal categories, and actions of PRO-s in particular. If C is a PRO as well,…
Beck's distributive laws provide sufficient conditions under which two monads can be composed, and monads arising from distributive laws have many desirable theoretical properties. Unfortunately, finding and verifying distributive laws, or establishing if one even exists, can be extremely difficult and error-prone. We develop general-purpose techniques for showing when there can be no distributive law between two monads. Two approaches are presented. The first widely generalizes ideas from a counterexample attributed to Plotkin, yielding general-purpose theorems that recover the previously kno…
In this paper, we give a novel abstract description of Szabo's polycategories. We use the theory of double clubs -- a generalisation of Kelly's theory of clubs to `pseudo' (or `weak') double categories -- to construct a pseudo-distributive law of the free symmetric strict monoidal category pseudocomonad on Mod over itself qua pseudomonad, and show that monads in the `two-sided Kleisli bicategory' of this pseudo-distributive law are precisely symmetric polycategories.
In this paper we consider the conditions that need to be satisfied by two families of pseudofunctors with a common codomain for them to be collated into a bifunctor. We observe similarities between these conditions and distributive laws of monads before providing a unified framework from which both of these results may be inferred. We do this by proving a version of the bifunctor theorem for lax functors. We then show that these generalised distributive laws may be arranged into a 2-category Dist(B,C,D), which is equivalent to Lax(B,Lax(C,D)). The collation of a distributive law into its assoc…
Motivated by recent work on weak distributive laws and their applications to coalgebraic semantics, we investigate the algebraic nature of semialgebras for a monad. These are algebras for the underlying functor of the monad subject to the associativity axiom alone-the unit axiom from the definition of an Eilenberg-Moore algebras is dropped. We prove that if the underlying category has coproducts, then semialgebras for a monad M are in fact the Eilenberg-Moore algebras for a suitable monad structure on the functor id + M , which we call the semifree monad M^s. We also provide concrete algebraic…
By the Three Graces we refer, following J.-L. Loday, to the algebraic operads Ass, Com, and Lie, each generated by a single binary operation; algebras over these operads are respectively associative, commutative associative, and Lie. We classify all distributive laws (in the categorical sense of Beck) between these three operads. Some of our results depend on the computer algebra system Maple, especially its packages LinearAlgebra and Groebner.
In recent years, algebraic studies of the differential calculus and integral calculus in the forms of differential algebra and Rota-Baxter algebra have been merged together to reflect the close relationship between the two calculi through the First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. In this paper we study this relationship from a categorical point of view in the context of distributive laws which can be tracked back to the distributive law of multiplication over addition. The monad giving Rota-Baxter algebras and the comonad giving differential algebras are constructed. Then a mixed distributive…
The Vietoris monad on the category of compact Hausdorff spaces is a topological analogue of the power-set monad on the category of sets. Exploiting Manes' characterisation of the compact Hausdorff spaces as algebras for the ultrafilter monad on sets, we give precise form to the above analogy by exhibiting the Vietoris monad as induced by a weak distributive law, in the sense of Böhm, of the power-set monad over the ultrafilter monad.
This paper concerns the problem of lifting a KZ doctrine P to the 2-category of pseudo T-algebras for some pseudomonad T. Here we show that this problem is equivalent to giving a pseudo-distributive law (meaning that the lifted pseudomonad is automatically KZ), and that such distributive laws may be simply described algebraically and are essentially unique (as known to be the case in the (co)KZ over KZ setting). Moreover, we give a simple description of these distributive laws using Bunge and Funk's notion of admissible morphisms for a KZ doctrine (the principal goal of this paper). We then go…
In a previous study, the algebraic formulation of the First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (FFTC) is shown to allow extensions of differential and Rota-Baxter operators on the one hand, and to give rise to categorical explanations using the ideas of liftings of monads and comonads, and mixed distributive laws on the other. Generalizing the FFTC, we consider in this paper a class of constraints between a differential operator and a Rota-Baxter operator. For a given constraint, we show that the existences of extensions of differential and Rota-Baxter operators, of liftings of monads and comonad…
We show how non-symmetric operads (or multicategories), symmetric operads, and clones, arise from three suitable monads on Cat, each extending to a (pseudo-)monad on the bicategory of categories and profunctors. We also explain how other previous categorical analyses of operads (via Day's tensor products, or via analytical functors) fit with the profunctor approach.
For a quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$, considered as a bicategory, Walters introduced categories enriched in $\mathcal{Q}$. Here we extend the study of monad-quantale-enriched categories of the past fifteen years by introducing monad-quantaloid-enriched categories. We do so by making lax distributive laws of a monad $\mathbb{T}$ over the discrete presheaf monad of the small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$ the primary data of the theory, rather than the lax monad extensions of $\mathbb{T}$ to the category of $\mathcal{Q}$-relations that they equivalently describe. The central piece of the paper establishes a…
Generalizing the algebraic formulation of the First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (FFTC), a class of constraints involving a pair of operators was considered in \cite{ZGK2}. For a given constraint, the existences of extensions of differential and Rota-Baxter operators, of liftings of monads and comonads, and of mixed distributive laws are shown to be equivalent. In this paper, we give a classification of the constraints satisfying these equivalent conditions.
We briefly relate the existence of a middle-four interchange map in a category with two monoidal structures, to the standard Cockett and Seely notion of a weakly distributive category.
For a small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$ we consider four fundamental 2-monads $\mathbb{T}$ on $\mathcal{Q}\text{-}{\bf Cat}$, given by the presheaf 2-monad $\mathbb{P}$ and the copresheaf 2-monad $\mathbb{P}^{\dagger}$, as well as by their two composite 2-monads, and establish that they all laxly distribute over $\mathbb{P}$. These four 2-monads therefore admit lax extensions to the category $\mathcal{Q}\text{-}{\bf Dist}$ of $\mathcal{Q}$-categories and their distributors. We characterize the corresponding $(\mathbb{T},\mathcal{Q})$-categories in each of the four cases, leading us to both known …
We modularly build increasingly larger fragments of the ZX-calculus by modularly adding new generators and relations, at each point, giving some concrete semantics in terms of some category of spans. This is performed using Lack's technique of composing props via distributive laws, as well as the technique of pushout cubes of Zanasi. We do this for the fragment of the ZX-calculus with only the black $π$-phase (and no Hadamard gate) as well as well as the fragment which additionally has the and gate as a generator (which is equivalent to the natural number H-box fragment of the ZH-calculus). In…
The main source of inspiration for the present paper is the work of R. Rosebrugh and R.J. Wood on constructive complete distributive lattices where the authors employ elegantly the concepts of adjunction and module in their study of ordered sets. Both notions (suitably adapted) are available in topology too, which permits us to investigate topological, metric and other kinds of spaces in a similar spirit. Therefore, relative to a choice $Φ$ of modules, we consider spaces which admit all colimits with weight in $Φ$, as well as (suitably defined) $Φ$-distributive and $Φ$-algebraic spaces. We sho…
In this article, the author analyses distributive and mixed distributive laws and some of their equivalences through the use of 2-adjunctions of the type $\Adj$-$\Mnd$. As far as the distributive laws are concerned, the equivalence between this structures and monads objects in the 2-category $\Adj_{\R}(Cat)$ is analysed, where these monad objects will correspond to liftings to the category of algebras of Eilenberg-Moore. Second, the equivalence between these structures and a pair consisting of a Eilenberg-Moore lifting and a Kleisli extension is analysed too, according to E. Manes and P. Mulry…
We introduce a tensor product for symmetric monoidal categories with the following properties. Let SMC denote the 2-category with objects small symmetric monoidal categories, arrows symmetric monoidal functors and 2-cells monoidal natural transformations. Our tensor product together with a suitable unit is part of a structure on SMC that is a 2-categorical version of the symmetric monoidal closed categories. This structure is surprisingly simple. In particular the arrows involved in the associativity and symmetry laws for the tensor and in the unit cancellation laws are 2-natural and satisfy c…
We introduce and study functor-functor and monad-comonad interaction laws as mathematical objects to describe interaction of effectful computations with behaviors of effect-performing machines. Monad-comonad interaction laws are monoid objects of the monoidal category of functor-functor interaction laws. We show that, for suitable generalizations of the concepts of dual and Sweedler dual, the greatest functor resp. monad interacting with a given functor or comonad is its dual while the greatest comonad interacting with a given monad is its Sweedler dual. We relate monad-comonad interaction law…
Monads and their composition via distributive laws have many applications in program semantics and functional programming. For many interesting monads, distributive laws fail to exist, and this has motivated investigations into weaker notions. In this line of research, Petrişan and Sarkis recently introduced a construction called the semifree monad in order to study semialgebras for a monad and weak distributive laws. In this paper, we prove that an algebraic presentation of the semifree monad M^s on a monad M can be obtained uniformly from an algebraic presentation of M. This result was conje…
The skew monoidal categories of Szlachányi are a weakening of monoidal categories where the three structural laws of left and right unitality and associativity are not required to be isomorphisms but merely transformations in a particular direction. In previous work, we showed that the free skew monoidal category on a set of generating objects can be concretely presented as a sequent calculus. This calculus enjoys cut elimination and admits focusing, i.e. a subsystem of canonical derivations, which solves the coherence problem for skew monoidal categories. In this paper, we develop sequent cal…
We present a method of constructing monoidal, braided monoidal, and symmetric monoidal bicategories from corresponding types of monoidal double categories that satisfy a lifting condition. Many important monoidal bicategories arise naturally in this way, and applying our general method is much easier than explicitly verifying the coherence laws of a monoidal bicategory for each example. Abstracting from earlier work in this direction, we express the construction as a functor between locally cubical bicategories that preserves monoid objects; this ensures that it also preserves monoidal functor…
It is known that the quantale of sup-preserving maps from a complete lattice to itself is a Frobenius quantale if and only if the lattice is completely distributive. Since completely distributive lattices are the nuclear objects in the autonomous category of complete lattices and sup-preserving maps, we study the above statement in a categorical setting. We introduce the notion of Frobenius structure in an arbitrary autonomous category, generalizing that of Frobenius quantale. We prove that the monoid of endomorphisms of a nuclear object has a Frobenius structure. If the environment category i…
Distributive laws between two monads in a 2-category $\CK$, as defined by Jon Beck in the case $\CK=\mathrm{Cat}$, were pointed out by the author to be monads in a 2-category $\mathrm{Mnd}\CK$ of monads. Steve Lack and the author defined wreaths to be monads in a 2-category $\mathrm{EM}\CK$ of monads with different 2-cells from $\mathrm{Mnd}\CK$. Mixed distributive laws were also considered by Jon Beck, Mike Barr and, later, various others, they are comonads in $\mathrm{Mnd}\CK$. Actually, as pointed out by John Power and Hiroshi Watanabe, there are a number of dual possibilities for mixed dis…
We extend the notion of a factorization system in a category to the realm of $\infty$-categories. To this end, we provide a description of the category of $\infty$-categories with factorization systems as the category of presheaves of spaces on a certain category that satisfy a version of the Segal condition. Additionally, we study the notion of distributive laws between monads and, more generally, lax functors in the context of categories with factorization systems. In particular, we also characterize categories with factorization systems as distributive laws in the bicategory of spans.
The purpose of this paper is to develop a theory of bimonads and Hopf monads on arbitrary categories thus providing the possibility to transfer the essentials of the theory of Hopf algebras in vector spaces to more general settings. There are several extensions of this theory to {\em monoidal} categories which in a certain sense follow the classical trace. Here we do not pose any conditions on our base category but we do refer to the monoidal structure of the category of endofunctors on any category $\A$ and by this we retain some of the combinatorial complexity which makes the theory so inter…
We present some laws relating the $\Cat$-indexed categories of left, right and bi-actions: by defining $(A\comp M)x = Mx^{Ax}$ one gets a biclosed monoidal action of $\Set^{X\op}$ on $(\Set^X)\op$, while $\B X$ and $\Cat/X$ act (partially) on their opposites by exponentials; both the inclusions $(\B X,\B X)\to (\Set^{X\op},\Set^X) \to (\Cat/X,\Cat/X)$ preserve the (cartesian) monoidal structures and the actions, and the same holds for substitutions along functors. These strong morphisms of strong indexed monoidal actions have in fact a wider range of applications; in particular, replacing $\Se…
We here present rudiments of an approach to geometric actions in noncommutative algebraic geometry, based on geometrically admissible actions of monoidal categories. This generalizes the usual (co)module algebras over Hopf algebras which provide affine examples. We introduce a compatibility of monoidal actions and localizations which is a distributive law. There are satisfactory notions of equivariant objects, noncommutative fiber bundles and quotients in this setup.
I motivate a variation (due to K. Szlachányi) of monoidal categories called skew-monoidal categories where the unital and associativity laws are not required to be isomorphisms, only natural transformations. Coherence has to be formulated differently than in the well-known monoidal case. In my (to my knowledge new) version, it becomes a statement of uniqueness of normalizing rewrites. I present a proof of this coherence theorem and also formalize it fully in the dependently typed programming language Agda.
