Let H and K be two finite groups with a properly outer action on the II_1 factor M. We prove that the group type inclusions $M^H \subset M \rtimes K$, studied earlier by Bisch and Haagerup, have property T in the sense of Popa if and only if the group generated by H and K in the outer automorphism group of M has Kazhdan's property T. This construction yields irreducible, infinite depth subfactors with small Jones indices and property T standard invariant.
In this article, we classify all standard invariants that can arise from a composed inclusion of an $A_3$ with an $A_4$ subfactor. More precisely, if $\mathcal{N}\subset \mathcal{P}$ is the $A_3$ subfactor and $\mathcal{P}\subset\mathcal{M}$ is the $A_4$ subfactor, then only four standard invariants can arise from the composed inclusion $\mathcal{N}\subset\mathcal{M}$. This answers a question posed by Bisch and Haagerup in 1994. The techniques of this paper also show that there are exactly four standard invariants for the composed inclusion of two $A_4$ subfactors.
Kazhdan's property (T) has been studied for several discrete group-like structures, including standard invariants of Jones' subfactors and discrete quantum groups. We prove a Zuk-type spectral gap criterion for property (T) in this setting. This allows us to construct a family of property (T) discrete quantum groups, as well as subfactor standard invariants, given by generators and a triangle presentation. These are the first examples of property (T) discrete quantum groups that are not directly related to a discrete group with property (T).
We develop a representation theory for $λ$-lattices, arising as standard invariants of subfactors, and for rigid C*-tensor categories, including a definition of their universal C*-algebra. We use this to give a systematic account of approximation and rigidity properties for subfactors and tensor categories, like (weak) amenability, the Haagerup property and property (T). We determine all unitary representations of the Temperley-Lieb-Jones $λ$-lattices and prove that they have the Haagerup property and the complete metric approximation property. We also present the first subfactors with propert…
We construct irreducible hyperfinite subfactors of index 6 with a prescribed fundamental group from a large family containing all countable and many uncountable subgroups of R_+. We also prove that there are unclassifiably many irreducible hyperfinite group-type subfactors of index 6 that all have the same standard invariant. More precisely, we associate such a subfactor to every ergodic measure preserving automorphism of the interval [0,1] and prove that the resulting subfactors are isomorphic if and only if the automorphisms are conjugate.
We construct numerous continuous families of irreducible subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor, which are non-isomorphic, but have all the same standard invariant. In particular, we obtain 1-parameter families of irreducible, non-isomorphic subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor, which have Jones index 6 and have all the same standard invariant with property (T). We exploit the fact that property (T) groups have uncountably many non-cocycle conjugate cocycle actions on the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor.
In this lecture we explain the intimate relationship between modular invariants in conformal field theory and braided subfactors in operator algebras. Our analysis is based on an approach to modular invariants using braided sector induction ("$α$-induction") arising from the treatment of conformal field theory in the Doplicher-Haag-Roberts framework. Many properties of modular invariants which have so far been noticed empirically and considered mysterious can be rigorously derived in a very general setting in the subfactor context. For example, the connection between modular invariants and gra…
First, we construct the Jones tower and tunnel of the central sequence subfactor arising from a hyperfinite type II_1 subfactor with finite index and finite depth, and prove each algebra has the double commutant property in the ultraproduct of the enveloping II_1 factor. Next, we show the equivalence between Popa's strong amenability and the double commutant property of the central sequence factor for subfactors as above without assuming the finite depth condition.
Subfactor standard invariants encode quantum symmetries. The small index subfactor classification program has been a rich source of interesting quantum symmetries. We give the complete classification of subfactor standard invariants to index $5\frac{1}{4}$, which includes $3+\sqrt{5}$, the first interesting composite index.
We define the notions of weak amenability and the Cowling-Haagerup constant for extremal finite index subfactors of type II_1. We prove that the Cowling-Haagerup constant only depends on the standard invariant of the subfactor. Hence, we define the Cowling-Haagerup constant for standard invariants. We explicitly compute the constant for Bisch-Haagerup subfactors and prove that it is equal to the constant of the group involved in the construction. Given a finite family of amenable standard invariants in the sense of Popa, we prove that their free product in the sense of Bisch-Jones is weakly am…
To any complex Hadamard matrix H one associates a spin model commuting square, and therefore a hyperfinite subfactor. The standard invariant of this subfactor captures certain "group-like" symmetries of H. To gain some insight, we compute the first few relative commutants of such subfactors for Hadamard matrices of small dimensions. Also, we show that subfactors arising from Dita type matrices have intermediate subfactors, and thus their standard invariants have some extra structure besides the Jones projections.
In this paper, we establish a rigorous correspondence between the two tube algebras, that one comes from the Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu TQFT introduced by Ocneanu and another comes from the sector theory introduced by Izumi, and construct a canonical isomorphism between the centers of the two tube algebras, which is a conjugate linear isomorphism preserving the products of the two algebras and commuting with the actions of SL(2,Z). Via this correspondence and the Dehn surgery formula, we compute Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu invariants from several subfactors for basic 3-manifolds including lens spaces and Bri…
If $G$ is a countable, discrete group generated by two finite subgroups $H$ and $K$ and $P$ is a II$_1$ factor with an outer G-action, one can construct the group-type subfactor $P^H \subset P \rtimes K$ introduced in \cite{BH}. This construction was used in \cite{BH} to obtain numerous examples of infinite depth subfactors whose standard invariant has exotic growth properties. We compute the planar algebra (in the sense of Jones \cite{J2}) of this subfactor and prove that any subfactor with an abstract planar algebra of "group type" arises from such a subfactor. The action of Jones' planar op…
We study the problem of realising modular invariants by braided subfactors and the related problem of classifying nimreps. We develop the fusion rule structure of these modular invariants. This structure is useful tool in the analysis of modular data from quantum double subfactors, particularly those of the double of cyclic groups, the symmetric group on 3 letters and the double of the subfactors with principal graph the extended Dynkin diagram D_5^(1). In particular for the double of S_3, 14 of the 48 modular modular invariants are nimless, and only 28 of the remaining 34 nimble invariants ca…
In these lectures we explain the intimate relationship between modular invariants in conformal field theory and braided subfactors in operator algebras. A subfactor with a braiding determines a matrix $Z$ which is obtained as a coupling matrix comparing two kinds of braided sector induction ("alpha-induction"). It has non-negative integer entries, is normalized and commutes with the S- and T-matrices arising from the braiding. Thus it is a physical modular invariant in the usual sense of rational conformal field theory. The algebraic treatment of conformal field theory models, e.g. $SU(n)_k$ m…
An inclusion of II$_1$ factors $N \subset M$ with finite Jones index gives rise to a powerful set of invariants that can be approached successfully in a number of different ways. We describe Jones' pictorial description of the standard invariant of a subfactor as a so-called planar algebra and show how this point of view leads to new structure results for subfactors.
Let Q be any II_1-factor. It is shown that any standard lattice G can be realized as the standard invariant of a free product of (several) rescalings of Q. In particular, if Q has fundamental group equal to the positive reals and if P is the free product of infinitely many copies of Q, then P has subfactors giving rise to all possible standard invariants. Similarly, given a II_1-subfactor N of M, it is shown there is a subfactor R of S having the same standard invariant as N in M but where S, respectively R, is the free product of M, respectively N, with rescalings of Q.
We complete the realisation by braided subfactors, announced by Ocneanu, of all SU(3)-modular invariant partition functions previously classified by Gannon.
In this paper, we establish the general theory of (2+1)-dimensional topological quantum field theory (in short, TQFT) with a Verlinde basis. It is a consequence that we have a Dehn surgery formula for 3-manifold invariants for this kind of TQFT's. We will show that Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu unitary TQFT's obtained from subfactors satisfy the axioms of TQFT's with Verlinde bases. Hence, in a Turaev-Viro-Ocneanu TQFT, we have a Dehn surgery formula for 3-manifolds. It turns out that this Dehn surgery formula is nothing but the formula of the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant constructed from a tube system,…
Braided subfactors of von Neumann algebras provide a framework for studying two dimensional conformal field theories and their modular invariants. We review this in the context of SU(3) conformal field theories through corresponding SU(3) braided subfactors and various subfactor invariants including spectral measures for the nimrep graphs, A_2-planar algebras and almost Calabi-Yau algebras.
A braided subfactor determines a coupling matrix Z which commutes with the S- and T-matrices arising from the braiding. Such a coupling matrix is not necessarily of "type I", i.e. in general it does not have a block-diagonal structure which can be reinterpreted as the diagonal coupling matrix with respect to a suitable extension. We show that there are always two intermediate subfactors which correspond to left and right maximal extensions and which determine "parent" coupling matrices Z^\pm of type I. Moreover it is shown that if the intermediate subfactors coincide, so that Z^+=Z^-, then Z i…
By a construction of Vaughan Jones, the bipartite graph $Γ(A)$ associated with the natural inclusion of $\mathbb C$ inside a finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebra $A$ gives rise to a planar algebra $\mathcal P^{Γ(A)}$. We prove that every subfactor planar subalgebra of $\mathcal P^{Γ(A)}$ is the fixed point planar algebra of a uniquely determined action of a compact quantum group $\mathbb G$ on $A$. We use this result to introduce a conceptual framework for the free wreath product operation on compact quantum groups in the language of planar algebras/standard invariants of subfactors. Our approach …
We associate a rigid C*-tensor category $C$ to a totally disconnected locally compact group $G$ and a compact open subgroup $K < G$. We characterize when $C$ has the Haagerup property or property (T), and when $C$ is weakly amenable. When $G$ is compactly generated, we prove that $C$ is essentially equivalent to the planar algebra associated by Jones and Burstein to a group acting on a locally finite bipartite graph. We then concretely realize $C$ as the category of bimodules generated by a hyperfinite subfactor.
Let $(Γ,μ)$ be a bipartite graph together with a weight on its vertices. Assume that $μ$ is an eigenvector for the adjacency matrix of $Γ$. Let Aut$(Γ, μ)$ be the automorphism group of the bipartite graph $Γ$ that scales the weight $μ$. It is a locally compact totally disconnected group that acts on the bipartite graph planar algebra $P$ associated to $(Γ,μ)$. Consider a subgroup G < Aut$(Γ, μ)$ and the set of fixed points $P^G \subset P$ that we assume to be a subfactor planar algebra. If the closure of G inside Aut$(Γ, μ)$ satisfies an approximation property such as amenability, the Haagerup…
We construct inclusions of the form $(B_0\otimes P)^G\subset (B_1\otimes P)^G$, where $G$ is a compact quantum group of Kac type acting on an inclusion of finite dimensional $\c^*$-algebras $B_0\subset B_1$ and on a $II_1$ factor $P$. Under suitable assumptions on the actions of $G$, this is a subfactor, whose Jones to er and standard invariant can be computed by using techniques of A. Wassermann. The subfactors associated to subgroups of compact groups, to projective representations of compact groups, to finite quantum groups, to finitely generated discrete groups, to vertex models and to spi…
We associate Popa systems (= standard invariants of subfactors) to the finite dimensional representations of compact quantum groups. We characterise the systems arising in this way: these are the ones which can be ``represented'' on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. This is proved by an universal construction. We explicitely compute (in terms of some free products) the operation of going from representations of compact quantum groups to Popa systems and then back via the universal construction. We prove a Kesten type result for the co-amenability of compact quantum groups, which allows us to …
We construct approximately inner actions of discrete amenable groups on strongly amenable subfactors of type II_1 with given invariants, and obtain classification results under some conditions. We also study the lifting of the relative χgroup.
We introduce $L^2$-Betti numbers, as well as a general homology and cohomology theory for the standard invariants of subfactors, through the associated quasi-regular symmetric enveloping inclusion of II_1 factors. We actually develop a (co)homology theory for arbitrary quasi-regular inclusions of von Neumann algebras. For crossed products by countable groups $Γ$, we recover the ordinary (co)homology of $Γ$. For Cartan subalgebras, we recover Gaboriau's $L^2$-Betti numbers for the associated equivalence relation. In this common framework, we prove that the $L^2$-Betti numbers vanish for amenabl…
We review the framework subfactors provide for understanding modular invariants. We discuss the structure of a generalized Longo-Rehren subfactor and the relationship between the coupling matrices of such subfactors, modular invariance and local extensions. We relate results of Kostant, in the context of the McKay correspondence for finite subgroups of SU(2), to subfactors. A direct proof of how alpha-induction produces modular invariants is presented.
We consider a type III subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite index with a finite system of braided $N$-$N$ morphisms which includes the irreducible constituents of the dual canonical endomorphism. We apply $α$-induction and, developing further some ideas of Ocneanu, we define chiral generators for the double triangle algebra. Using a new concept of intertwining braiding fusion relations, we show that the chiral generators can be naturally identified with the $α$-induced sectors. A matrix $Z$ is defined and shown to commute with the S- and T-matrices arising from the braiding. If the braiding is non…
We consider the infinite symmetric group and its infinite index subgroup given as the stabilizer subgroup of one element under the natural action on a countable set. This inclusion of discrete groups induces a hyperfinite subfactor for each finite factorial representation of the larger group. We compute subfactor invariants of this construction in terms of the Thoma parameter.
In this paper we further analyze modular invariants for subfactors, in particular the structure of the chiral induced systems of M-M morphisms. The relative braiding between the chiral systems restricts to a proper braiding on their ``ambichiral'' intersection, and we show that the ambichiral braiding is non-degenerate if the original braiding of the N-N morphisms is. Moreover, in this case the dimensions of the irreducible representations of the chiral fusion rule algebras are given by the chiral branching coefficients which describe the ambichiral contribution in the irreducible decompositio…
If $N \subset P,Q \subset M$ are type II_1 factors with $N' \cap M = C id$ and $[M:N]$ finite we show that restrictions on the standard invariants of the elementary inclusions $N \subset P$, $N \subset Q$, $P \subset M$ and $Q \subset M$ imply drastic restrictions on the indices and angles between the subfactors. In particular we show that if these standard invariants are trivial and the conditional expectations onto $P$ and $Q$ do not commute, then $[M:N]$ is 6 or $6 + 4\sqrt 2$. In the former case $N$ is the fixed point algebra for an outer action of $S_3$ on $M$ and the angle is $π/3$, and …
There is a natural construction which associates to a finitely generated, countable, discrete group $G$ and a 3-cocycle $ω$ of $G$ an inclusion of II$_1$ factors, the so-called diagonal subfactors (with cocycle). In the case when the cocycle is trivial these subfactors are well studied and their standard invariant (or planar algebra) is known. We give a description of the planar algebra of these subfactors when a cocycle is present. The action of Jones' planar operad involves the 3-cocycle $ω$ explicitly and some interesting identities for 3-cocycles appear when naturality of the action is ver…
Growing out of the initial connections between subfactors and knot theory that gave rise to the Jones polynomial, Jones' axiomatization of the standard invariant of an extremal finite index $II_1$ subfactor as a spherical $C^*$-planar algebra, presented in arXiv:math.QA/9909027, is the most elegant and powerful description available. We make the natural extension of this axiomatization to the case of finite index subfactors of arbitrary type. We also provide the first steps toward a limited planar structure in the infinite index case. The central role of rotations, which provide the main non-t…
We examine the notion of $α$-strong singularity for subfactors of a \IIi factor, which is a metric quantity that relates the distance between a unitary in the factor and a subalgebra with the distance between that subalgebra and its unitary conjugate. Through planar algebra techniques, we demonstrate the existence of a finite index singular subfactor of the hyperfinite \IIi factor that cannot be strongly singular with $α=1$, in contrast to the case for masas. Using work of Popa, Sinclair, and Smith, we show that there exists an absolute constant $0<c<1$ such that all singular subfactors are $c…
Using the continuous decomposition, we classify strongly free actions of discrete amenable groups on strongly amenable subfactors of type III$_λ, 0 < λ< 1$. Winsløw's fundamental homomorphism is a complete invariant. This removes the extra assumptions in the classification theorems of Loi and Winsløw and gives a complete classification up to cocycle conjugacy.
For any abstract subfactor planar algebra $P$, there exists a finite index extremal subfactor $M_0 \subset M_1$ with $P$ as its standard invariant. In this paper, we classify the automorphism group of a bipartite graph planar algebra, and obtain subfactor planar subalgebras by taking fixed points under groups of automorphisms. This construction provides both new examples of subfactors and new descriptions of the planar algebras of previously known examples.
Canonical tensor product subfactors (CTPS's) describe, among other things, the embedding of chiral observables in two-dimensional conformal quantum field theories. A new class of CTPS's is constructed some of which are associated with certain modular invariants, thereby establishing the expected existence of the corresponding two-dimensional theories.
We consider commuting squares of finite dimensional von Neumann algebras having the algebra of complex numbers in the lower left corner. Examples include the vertex models, the spin models (in the sense of subfactor theory) and the commuting squares associated to finite dimensional Kac algebras. To any such commuting square we associate a compact Kac algebra and we compute the corresponding subfactor and its standard invariant in terms of it.
We define and study a certain relative tensor product of subfactors over a modular tensor category. This gives a relative tensor product of two completely rational heterotic full local conformal nets with trivial superselection structures over a common chiral representation category. In particular, we have a new realization of fusion rules of modular invariants. This also gives a mathematical definition of a composition of two gapped domain walls between topological phases.
In this article, we will prove that the subsectors of $α$-induced sectors for $M \rtimes \hat{G} \supset M$ forms a modular category, where $M \rtimes \hat{G}$ is the crossed product of $M$ by the group dual $\hat{G}$ of a finite group $G$. In fact, we will prove that it is equivalent to Müger's crossed product. By using this identification, we will exhibit an orbifold aspect of the quantum double of $Δ$(not necessarily non-degenerate) obtained from a Longo-Rehren inclusion $A \supset B_Δ$ under certain assumptions. We will apply the above description of the quantum double of $Δ$ to the Reshet…
The article contains a detailed description of the connection between finite depth inclusions of $II_1$-subfactors and finite $C^*$-tensor categories (i.e. $C^*$-tensor categories with dimension function for which the number of equivalence classes of irreducible objects is finite). The $(N,N)$-bimodules belonging to a $II_1$-subfactor $N\subset M$ with finite Jones index form a $C^*$-tensor category with dimension function. Conversely, taking an object of a finite $C^*$-tensor category C we construct a subfactor $A\subset R$ of the hyperfinite $II_1$-factor R with finite index and finite depth…
Given a finite depth subfactor planar algebra $\mathcal{P}$ endowed with the graded $*$-algebra structures $\{Gr_k^+ \mathcal{P}\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ of Guionnet, Jones, and Shlyakhtenko, there is a sequence of canonical traces $Tr_{k,+}$ on $Gr_k^+\mathcal{P}$ induced by the Temperley-Lieb diagrams and a sequence of trace-preserving embeddings into the bounded operators on a Hilbert space. Via these embeddings the $*$-algebras $\{Gr_k^+\mathcal{P}\}_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ generate a tower of non-commutative probability spaces $\{M_{k,+}\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ whose inclusions recover $\mathcal{P}$ as…
We give a subfactor construction for a $II_{1}$ factor M which is not anti-isomorphic to itself. The $II_{1}$ factor we consider is essentially the same as the example previously given by Connes. However, our construction uses the recently developed theory of free group factors. We show that there exists an inclusion of $II_{1}$ factors $A\subset B$ which by iteration of the Jones basic construction produces $M$ as the enveloping algebra. Here A is a free group factor and B is isomorphic to the crossed product of A by an action of a finite group. By using a Connes' argument involving the invar…
Given a subfactor planar algebra P and a Hilbert P-module of lowest weight 0 we build a bimodule over the symmetric enveloping inclusion associated to P. As an application we prove diagrammatically that the Temperley-Lieb-Jones standard invariants have the Haagerup property. This provides a new proof of a result due to Popa and Vaes.
The principal graph $X$ of a subfactor with finite Jones index is one of the important algebraic invariants of the subfactor. If $Δ$ is the adjacency matrix of $X$ we consider the equation $Δ=U+U^{-1}$. When $X$ has square norm $\leq 4$ the spectral measure of $U$ can be averaged by using the map $u\to u^{-1}$, and we get a probability measure $ε$ on the unit circle which does not depend on $U$. We find explicit formulae for this measure $ε$ for the principal graphs of subfactors with index $\le 4$, the (extended) Coxeter-Dynkin graphs of type $A$, $D$ and $E$. The moment generating function o…
We introduce the notion of L^2-rigidity for von Neumann algebras, a generalization of property (T) which can be viewed as an analogue for the vanishing of 1-cohomology into the left regular representation of a group. We show that L^2-rigidity passes to normalizers and is satisfied by nonamenable II_1 factors which are non-prime, have property $Γ$, or are weakly rigid. As a consequence we obtain that if $M$ is a free product of diffuse von Neumann algebras, or if $M = LΓ$ where $Γ$ is a finitely generated group with $b_1^{(2)}(Γ) > 0$, then any nonamenable regular subfactor of $M$ is prime and …
Given a group action on a finite set, we define the group-action model which consists of tensor network diagrams which are invariant under the group symmetry. In particular, group-action models can be realized as the even part of group-subgroup subfactor planar algebras. Moreover, all group-subgroup subfactor planar algebras arise in this way from transitive actions. In this paper, we provide a universal skein theory for those planar algebras. With the help of this skein theory, we give a positive answer to a question asked by Vaughan Jones in the late nineties.
The main result of this paper is that the k^{\rm th} continuous Hochschild cohomology groups H^k(\cl M,\cl M) and H^k(\cl M,B(H)) of a von Neumann factor ${\cl M}\subseteq B(H) of type {\rm II}_1 with property Gamma are zero for all positive integers k. The method of proof involves the construction of hyperfinite subfactors with special properties and a new inequality of Grothendieck type for multilinear maps. We prove joint continuity in the $\|\cdot\|_2$-norm of separately ultraweakly continuous multilinear maps, and combine these results to reduce to the case of completely bounded cohomolog…
We construct unitary modular categories for a general class of coset conformal field theories based on our previous study of these theories in the algebraic quantum field theory framework using subfactor theory. We also consider the calculations of the corresponding 3-manifold invariants. It is shown that under certain index conditions the link invaraints colored by the representations of coset factorize into the products of the the link invaraints colored by the representations of the two groups in the coset. But the 3-manifold invariants do not behave so simply in general due to the nontrivi…
