First, we construct the Jones tower and tunnel of the central sequence subfactor arising from a hyperfinite type II_1 subfactor with finite index and finite depth, and prove each algebra has the double commutant property in the ultraproduct of the enveloping II_1 factor. Next, we show the equivalence between Popa's strong amenability and the double commutant property of the central sequence factor for subfactors as above without assuming the finite depth condition.
A bi-unitary connection in subfactor theory of Jones producing a subfactor of finite depth gives a 4-tensor appearing in a recent work of Bultinck-Mariena-Williamson-Sahinoglu-Haegemana-Verstraete on 2-dimensional topological order and anyons. In their work, they have a special projection called a projector matrix product operator. We prove that the range of this projection of length k is naturally identified with the k-th higher relative commutant of the subfactor arising from the bi-unitary connection. This gives a further connection between 2-dimensional topological order and subfactor theo…

We define a canonical relative commutant planar algebra from a strongly Markov inclusion of finite von Neumann algebras. In the case of a connected unital inclusion of finite dimensional C*-algebras with the Markov trace, we show this planar algebra is isomorphic to the bipartite graph planar algebra of the Bratteli diagram of the inclusion. Finally, we show that a finite depth subfactor planar algebra is a planar subalgebra of the bipartite graph planar algebra of its principal graph.
Given a finite-index and finite-depth subfactor, we define the notion of \textit{quantum double inclusion} - a certain unital inclusion of von Neumann algebras constructed from the given subfactor - which is closely related to that of Ocneanu's asymptotic inclusion. We show that the quantum double inclusion when applied to the Kac algebra subfactor $R^H \subset R$ produces Drinfeld double of $H$ where $H$ is a finite-dimensional Kac algebra acting outerly on the hyperfinite $II_1$ factor $R$ and $R^H$ denotes the fixed-point subalgebra. More precisely, quantum double inclusion of $R^H \subset …
Growing out of the initial connections between subfactors and knot theory that gave rise to the Jones polynomial, Jones' axiomatization of the standard invariant of an extremal finite index $II_1$ subfactor as a spherical $C^*$-planar algebra, presented in arXiv:math.QA/9909027, is the most elegant and powerful description available. We make the natural extension of this axiomatization to the case of finite index subfactors of arbitrary type. We also provide the first steps toward a limited planar structure in the infinite index case. The central role of rotations, which provide the main non-t…
Let $C(K)$ be the space of all real or complex valued continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space $K$. We are interested in the following property of $K$: for any real valued $f \in C(K)$ the double commutant of the corresponding multiplication operator $F$ coincides with the norm closed algebra generated by $F$ and $I$. In this case we say that $K \in \mathcal{DCP}$. It was proved in \cite{Ki} that any locally connected metrizable continuum is in $\mathcal{DCP}$. In this paper we indicate a class of arc connected but not locally connected continua that are in $\mathcal{DCP}$. We also co…
In \cite{Sde2018} we defined the notion of \textit{quantum double inclusion} associated to a finite-index and finite-depth subfactor and studied the quantum double inclusion associated to the Kac algebra subfactor $R^H \subset R$ where $H$ is a finite-dimensional Kac algebra acting outerly on the hyperfinite $II_1$ factor $R$ and $R^H$ denotes the fixed-point subalgebra. In this article we analyse quantum double inclusions associated to the family of Kac algebra subfactors given by $\{ R^H \subset R \rtimes \underbrace{H \rtimes H^* \rtimes \cdots}_{\text{$m$ times}} : m \geq 1 \}$. For each $…
Richard Kadison showed that not every commutative von Neumann subalgebra of a factor von Neumann algebra is equal to its relative double commutant. We prove that every commutative C*-subalgebra of a centrally prime C*-algebra $B$ equals its relative approximate double commutant. If $B$ is a von Neumann algebra, there is a related distance formula.
Every unital nonselfadjoint operator algebra possesses canonical and functorial classes of faithful (even completely isometric) Hilbert space representations satisfying a double commutant theorem generalizing von Neumann's classical result. Examples and complementary results are given.
We extend work of the first author concering relative double commutants and approximate double commutants of unital subalgebras of unital C*-algebras, including metric versions involving distance estimates. We prove metric results for AH subalgebras of von Neumann algebras or AF subalgebras of primitive C*-algebras. We prove other general results, including some for nonselfadjoint commutative subalgebras, using C*-algebraic versions of the Stone-Weierstrass and Bishop-Stone-Weierstrass theorems.
We give a precise definition for when a subfactor arises from a conformal net which can be motivated by classification of defects. We show that a subfactor $N \subset M$ arises from a conformal net if there is a conformal net whose representation category is the quantum double of $N\subset M$.
We study the problem of realising modular invariants by braided subfactors and the related problem of classifying nimreps. We develop the fusion rule structure of these modular invariants. This structure is useful tool in the analysis of modular data from quantum double subfactors, particularly those of the double of cyclic groups, the symmetric group on 3 letters and the double of the subfactors with principal graph the extended Dynkin diagram D_5^(1). In particular for the double of S_3, 14 of the 48 modular modular invariants are nimless, and only 28 of the remaining 34 nimble invariants ca…
A. Ocneanu has observed that a mysterious orbifold phenomenon occurs in the system of the M_infinity-M_infinity bimodules of the asymptotic inclusion, a subfactor analogue of the quantum double, of the Jones subfactor of type A_2n+1. We show that this is a general phenomenon and identify some of his orbifolds with the ones in our sense as subfactors given as simultaneous fixed point algebras by working on the Hecke algebra subfactors of type A of Wenzl. That is, we work on their asymptotic inclusions and show that the M_infinity-M_infinity bimodules are described by certain orbifolds (with gho…
We construct the quantum s-tuple subfactors for an AFD II_1 subfactor with finite index and depth, for an arbitrary natural number s. This is a generalization of the quantum multiple subfactors by J.Erlijman and H.Wenzl, which generalizes the quantum double construction of a subfactor for the case that the original subfactor gives rise to a braided tensor category. In this paper we give a multiple construction for a subfactor with a weaker condition than braidedness of the bimodule system.
We are concerned with the center (=quantum double) of tensor categories and prove generalizations of several results proven previously for quantum doubles of Hopf algebras. We consider F-linear tensor categories C with simple unit and finitely many isomorphism classes of simple objects. We assume that C is either a *-category (i.e. there is a positive *-operation on the morphisms) or semisimple and spherical over an algebraically closed field F. In the latter case we assume that dim C=sum_i d(X_i)^2 is non-zero, where the summation runs over the isomorphism classes of simple objects. We prove:…
It is well-known that the quantum double $D(N\subset M)$ of a finite depth subfactor $N\subset M$, or equivalently the Drinfeld center of the even part fusion category, is a unitary modular tensor category. Thus should arise in conformal field theory. We show that for every subfactor $N\subset M$ with index $[M:N]<4$ the quantum double $D(N\subset M)$ is realized as the representation category of a completely rational conformal net. In particular, the quantum double of $E_6$ can be realized as a $\mathbb Z_2$-simple current extension of $\mathrm{SU}(2)_{10}\times \mathrm{Spin}(11)_1$ and thus …
We study (dual) Longo-Rehren subfactors $M\otimes M^{opp} \subset R$ arising from various systems of endomorphisms of M obtained from alpha-induction for some braided subfactor $N\subset M$. Our analysis provides useful tools to determine the systems of R-R morphisms associated with such Longo-Rehren subfactors, which constitute the ``quantum double'' systems in an appropriate sense. The key to our analysis is that alpha-induction produces half-braidings in the sense of Izumi, so that his general theory can be applied. Nevertheless, alpha-induced systems are in general not braided, and thus ou…
In this article, we will prove that the subsectors of $α$-induced sectors for $M \rtimes \hat{G} \supset M$ forms a modular category, where $M \rtimes \hat{G}$ is the crossed product of $M$ by the group dual $\hat{G}$ of a finite group $G$. In fact, we will prove that it is equivalent to Müger's crossed product. By using this identification, we will exhibit an orbifold aspect of the quantum double of $Δ$(not necessarily non-degenerate) obtained from a Longo-Rehren inclusion $A \supset B_Δ$ under certain assumptions. We will apply the above description of the quantum double of $Δ$ to the Reshet…
A near-group fusion category is a fusion category C where all but 1 simple objects are invertible. Examples of these include the Tambara-Yamagami categories and the even sectors of the E6 and affine-D5 subfactors, though there are infinitely many others. We classify the near-group fusion categories, and compute their doubles and the modular data relevant to conformal field theory. Among other things, we explicitly construct over 40 new finite depth subfactors, with Jones index ranging from around 6.85 to around 14.93. We expect all of these doubles to be realised by rational conformal field th…
The quantum double of the Haagerup subfactor, the first irreducible finite depth subfactor with index above 4, is the most obvious candidate for exotic modular data. We show that its modular data DHg fits into a family $D^ωHg_{2n+1}$, where $n\ge 0$ and $ω\in \bbZ_{2n+1}$. We show $D^0 Hg_{2n+1}$ is related to the subfactors Izumi hypothetically associates to the cyclic groups $Z_{2n+1}$. Their modular data comes equipped with canonical and dual canonical modular invariants; we compute the corresponding alpha-inductions etc. In addition, we show there are (respectively) 1, 2, 0 subfactors of I…
We realise non-unitary fusion categories using subfactor-like methods, and compute their quantum doubles and modular data. For concreteness we focus on generalising the Haagerup-Izumi family of Q-systems. For example, we construct endomorphism realisations of the (non-unitary) Yang-Lee model, and non-unitary analogues of one of the even subsystems of the Haagerup subfactor and of the Grossman-Snyder system. We supplement Izumi's equations for identifying the half-braidings, which were incomplete even in his Q-system setting. We conjecture a remarkably simple form for the modular S and T matric…
We consider a type III subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite index with a finite system of braided $N$-$N$ morphisms which includes the irreducible constituents of the dual canonical endomorphism. We apply $α$-induction and, developing further some ideas of Ocneanu, we define chiral generators for the double triangle algebra. Using a new concept of intertwining braiding fusion relations, we show that the chiral generators can be naturally identified with the $α$-induced sectors. A matrix $Z$ is defined and shown to commute with the S- and T-matrices arising from the braiding. If the braiding is non…
Some recent research on the tensor products of operator systems and ensuing nuclearity properties in this setting raised many stability problems. In this paper we examine the preservation of these nuclearity properties including exactness, local liftability and the double commutant expectation property under basic algebraic operations such as quotient, duality, coproducts and tensor products. We show that, in the finite dimensional case, exactness and lifting property are dual pairs, that is, an operator system $S$ is exact if and only if the dual operator system $S^d$ has the lifting property…
A certain class of matrix-valued Borel matrix functions is introduced and it is shown that all functions of that class naturally operate on any operator T in a finite type I von Neumann algebra M in a way such that uniformly bounded sequences f_1,f_2,... of functions that converge pointwise to 0 transform into sequences f_1[T],f_2[T],... of operators in M that converge to 0 in the *-strong operator topology. It is also demonstrated that the double *-commutant of any such operator T which acts on a separable Hilbert space coincides with the set of all operators of the form f[T] where f runs ove…
