We are concerned with the center (=quantum double) of tensor categories and prove generalizations of several results proven previously for quantum doubles of Hopf algebras. We consider F-linear tensor categories C with simple unit and finitely many isomorphism classes of simple objects. We assume that C is either a *-category (i.e. there is a positive *-operation on the morphisms) or semisimple and spherical over an algebraically closed field F. In the latter case we assume that dim C=sum_i d(X_i)^2 is non-zero, where the summation runs over the isomorphism classes of simple objects. We prove: (i) Z(C) is a semisimple spherical (or *-) category. (ii) Z(C) is weakly monoidally Morita equivalent (in the sense of math.CT/0111204) to C X C^op. This implies dim Z(C)=(dim C)^2. (iii) We analyze the simple objects of Z(C) in terms of certain finite dimensional algebras, of which Ocneanu's tube algebra is the smallest. We prove the conjecture of Gelfand and Kazhdan according to which the number of simple objects of Z(C) coincides with the dimension of the state space H_{S^1\times S^1} of the torus in the triangulation TQFT built from C. (iv) We prove that Z(C) is modular and we compute the Gauss sums Delta_+/-(Z(C))=sum_i theta(X_i)^{+/- 1}d(X_i)^2=dim C. (v) Finally, if C is already modular then Z(C)\simeq C X C~, where C~ is the tensor category C with the braiding c~_{X,Y}=c_{Y,X}^{-1}.
We provide a framework to triangulate subfactor categories of additive categories with additive endofunctors. It is proved that such a framework is sufficiently flexible to cover many instances in algebra and geometry where abelian, exact and triangulated subfactor categories are constructed. As an application, we show that Iyama-Yoshino triangulated subfactor categories can be modeled.
In this paper we construct two new fusion categories and many new subfactors related to the exceptional Extended Haagerup subfactor. The Extended Haagerup subfactor has two even parts EH1 and EH2. These fusion categories are mysterious and are the only known fusion categories which appear to be unrelated to finite groups, quantum groups, or Izumi quadratic categories. One key technique which has previously revealed hidden structure in fusion categories is to study all other fusion categories in the Morita equivalence class, and hope that one of the others is easier to understand. In this paper…
We develop a representation theory for $λ$-lattices, arising as standard invariants of subfactors, and for rigid C*-tensor categories, including a definition of their universal C*-algebra. We use this to give a systematic account of approximation and rigidity properties for subfactors and tensor categories, like (weak) amenability, the Haagerup property and property (T). We determine all unitary representations of the Temperley-Lieb-Jones $λ$-lattices and prove that they have the Haagerup property and the complete metric approximation property. We also present the first subfactors with propert…
In this note, we discuss the notion of symmetric self-duality of shaded planar algebras, which allows us to lift shadings on subfactor planar algebras to obtain Z/2Z-graded unitary fusion categories. This finishes the proof that there are unitary fusion categories with fusion graphs 4442 and 3333.
We consider certain categorical structures that are implicit in subfactor theory. Making the connection between subfactor theory (at finite index) and category theory explicit sheds light on both subjects. Furthermore, it allows various generalizations of these structures, e.g. to arbitrary ground fields, and the proof of new results about topological invariants in three dimensions. The central notion is that of a Frobenius algebra in a tensor category A, which reduces to the classical notion if A=F-Vect, where F is a field. An object X in A with two-sided dual X^ gives rise to a Frobenius alg…
We associate a rigid C*-tensor category $C$ to a totally disconnected locally compact group $G$ and a compact open subgroup $K < G$. We characterize when $C$ has the Haagerup property or property (T), and when $C$ is weakly amenable. When $G$ is compactly generated, we prove that $C$ is essentially equivalent to the planar algebra associated by Jones and Burstein to a group acting on a locally finite bipartite graph. We then concretely realize $C$ as the category of bimodules generated by a hyperfinite subfactor.
We give a characterization of extremal irreducible discrete subfactors $(N\subseteq M, E)$ where $N$ is type ${\rm II}_1$ in terms of connected W*-algebra objects in rigid C*-tensor categories. We prove an equivalence of categories where the morphisms for discrete inclusions are normal $N-N$ bilinear ucp maps which preserve the state $τ\circ E$, and the morphisms for W*-algebra objects are categorical ucp morphisms. As an application, we get a well-behaved notion of the standard invariant of an extremal irreducible discrete subfactor, together with a subfactor reconstruction theorem. Thus our …
Given a II$_1$-subfactor $A\subset B$ of arbitrary index, we show that the rectangular GICAR category, also called the rectangular planar rook category, faithfully embeds as $A-A$ bimodule maps among the bimodules $\bigotimes_A^n L^2(B)$. As a corollary, we get a lower bound on the dimension of the centralizer algebras $A_0'\cap A_{2n}$ for infinite index subfactors, and we also get that $A_0'\cap A_{2n}$ is nonabelian for $n\geq 2$, where $(A_n)_{n\geq 0}$ is the Jones tower for $A_0=A\subset B=A_1$. We also show that the annular GICAR/planar rook category acts as maps amongst the $A$-central…
We study abelian localizations of triangulated categories induced by rigid contravariantly finite subcategories, and also triangulated structures on subfactor categories of triangulated categories. In this context we generalize recent results of Buan-Marsh and Iyama-Yoshino. We also extend basic results of Keller-Reiten concerning the Gorenstein and the Calabi-Yau property for categories arising from certain rigid, not necessarily cluster tilting, subcategories, as well as several results of the literature concerning the connections between 2-cluster tilting subcategories of triangulated categ…
In this paper, we generalize Izumi's result on uniqueness of realization of finite C$^*$-tensor categories in the endomorphism category of the injective factor of type II_1 for finitely generated strongly amenable C$^*$-tensor categories by applying Popa's classification theorem of strongly amenable subfactors of type III_1.
This is a PhD Thesis on the connection between subfactors (more precisely, their corresponding fusion categories) and Conformal Field Theory (CFT). Besides being a mathematically interesting topic on its own, subfactors have also attracted the attention of physicists, since there is a conjectured correspondence between these and CFTs. Although there is quite a persuasive body of evidence for this conjecture, there are some gaps: there exists a set of exceptional subfactors with no known counterpart CFT. Hence, it is necessary to develop new techniques for building a CFT from a subfactor. Here,…
For a finite-index $\mathrm{II}_1$ subfactor $N \subset M$, we prove the existence of a universal Hopf $\ast$-algebra (or, a discrete quantum group in the analytic language) acting on $M$ in a trace-preserving fashion and fixing $N$ pointwise. We call this Hopf $\ast$-algebra the quantum Galois group for the subfactor and compute it in some examples of interest, notably for arbitrary irreducible finite-index depth-two subfactors. Along the way, we prove the existence of universal acting Hopf algebras for more general structures (tensors in enriched categories), in the spirit of recent work by …
Given a pair of fusion categories $C$ and $D$, we may form the free product $C * D$ and the tensor product $C \boxtimes D$. It is natural to think of the tensor product as a quotient of the free product. What other quotients are possible? When $C=D=A_2$, there is an infinite family of quotients interpolating between the free product and the tensor product (closely related to the $A_{2n-1}^{(1)}$ and $D_{n+2}^{(1)}$ subfactors at index 4). Bisch and Haagerup discovered one example of such an intermediate quotient when $C=A_2$ and $D=T_2$, and suggested that there might be another family here. W…
We show that given a rigid C*-tensor category, there is an equivalence of categories between normalized irreducible Q-systems, also known as connected unitary Frobenius algebra objects, and compact connected W*-algebra objects. Although this result could be proved as a corollary of our previous article on realizations of algebra objects and discrete subfactors, we prove it here directly via categorical methods without passing through subfactor theory.
We classify C$^*$ near-group categories by using Vaughan Jones theory of subfactors and the Cuntz algebra endomorphisms. Our results show that there is a sharp contrast between two essentially different cases, integral and irrational cases. When the dimension of the unique non-invertible object is an integer, we obtain a complete classification list, and it turns out that such categories are always group theoretical. When it is irrational, we obtain explicit polynomial equations whose solutions completely classify the C$^*$ near-group categories in this class.
It has been conjectured that every $(2+1)$-TQFT is a Chern-Simons-Witten (CSW) theory labelled by a pair $(G,λ)$, where $G$ is a compact Lie group, and $λ\in H^4(BG;Z)$ a cohomology class. We study two TQFTs constructed from Jones' subfactor theory which are believed to be counterexamples to this conjecture: one is the quantum double of the even sectors of the $E_6$ subfactor, and the other is the quantum double of the even sectors of the Haagerup subfactor. We cannot prove mathematically that the two TQFTs are indeed counterexamples because CSW TQFTs, while physically defined, are not yet mat…
We prove that if C is a tensor C*-category in a certain class, then there exists an uncountable family of pairwise non stably isomorphic II_1 factors (M_i) such that the bimodule category of M_i is equivalent to C for all i. In particular, we prove that every finite tensor C*-category is the bimodule category of a II_1 factor. As an application we prove the existence of a II_1 factor for which the set of indices of finite index irreducible subfactors is {1, \frac{5 + \sqrt{13}}{2}, 12 + 3\sqrt{13}, 4 + \sqrt{13}, \frac{11 + 3\sqrt{13}}{2}, \frac{13 + 3\sqrt{13}}{2}, \frac{19 + 5\sqrt{13}}{2}, …
In this paper we give a complete classification of unitary fusion categories $\otimes$-generated by an object of dimension $\frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2}$. We show that all such categories arise as certain wreath products of either the Fibonacci category, or of the dual even part of the $2D2$ subfactor. As a by-product of proving our main classification result we produce a classification of finite unitarizable quotients of $\operatorname{Fib}^{*N}$ satisfying a certain symmetry condition.
Q-systems are unitary versions of Frobenius algebra objects which appeared in the theory of subfactors. In recent joint work with R. Hernández Palomares and C. Jones, the authors defined a notion of Q-system completion for C*/W* 2-categories, which is a unitary version of a higher idempotent completion in the spirit of Douglas--Reutter and Gaiotto--Johnson-Freyd. In this article, we prove that Q-system completion is a dagger 3-functor on the dagger 3-category of C*/W* 2-categories. We also prove that Q-system completion satisfies a universal property analogous to the universal property satisfi…
Given a rigid C*-tensor category C with simple unit and a probability measure $μ$ on the set of isomorphism classes of its simple objects, we define the Poisson boundary of $(C,μ)$. This is a new C*-tensor category P, generally with nonsimple unit, together with a unitary tensor functor $Π: C \to P$. Our main result is that if P has simple unit (which is a condition on some classical random walk), then $Π$ is a universal unitary tensor functor defining the amenable dimension function on C. Corollaries of this theorem unify various results in the literature on amenability of C*-tensor categorie…
Presilting and silting subcategories in extriangulated categories were introduced by Adachi and Tsukamoto recently. In this paper, we prove that the Gabriel-Zisman localization $\mathcal B/({\rm thick}\mathcal W)$ of an extriangulated category $\mathcal B$ with respect to a presilting subcategory $\mathcal W$ satisfying certain condition can be realized as a subfactor category of $\mathcal B$. This generalizes the result by Iyama-Yang for silting reduction on triangulated categories. Then we discuss the relation between silting subcategories and tilting subcategories in extriangulated categori…
The notion of index for inclusions of von Neumann algebras goes back to a seminal work of Jones on subfactors of type ${I\!I}_1$. In the absence of a trace, one can still define the index of a conditional expectation associated to a subfactor and look for expectations that minimize the index. This value is called the minimal index of the subfactor. We report on our analysis, contained in [GL19], of the minimal index for inclusions of arbitrary von Neumann algebras (not necessarily finite, nor factorial) with finite-dimensional centers. Our results generalize some aspects of the Jones index for…
In this article, we construct a 2-shaded rigid ${\rm C}^*$ multitensor category with canonical unitary dual functor directly from a standard $λ$-lattice. We use the notions of traceless Markov towers and lattices to define the notion of module and bimodule over standard $λ$-lattice(s), and we explicitly construct the associated module category and bimodule category over the corresponding 2-shaded rigid ${\rm C}^*$ multitensor category. As an example, we compute the modules and bimodules for Temperley-Lieb-Jones standard $λ$-lattices in terms of traceless Markov towers and lattices. Translating…
Ng and Schauenburg generalized higher Frobenius-Schur indicators to pivotal fusion categories and showed that these indicators may be computed utilizing the modular data of the Drinfel'd center of the given category. We consider two classes of fusion categories generated by a single non-invertible simple object: near groups, those fusion categories with one non-invertible simple object, and Haagerup-Izumi categories, those with one non-invertible simple object for every invertible object. Examples of both types arise as representations of finite or quantum groups or as Jones standard invariant…
In the first part of this paper, we give a new look at inclusions of von Neumann algebras with finite-dimensional centers and finite Jones' index. The minimal conditional expectation is characterized by means of a canonical state on the relative commutant, that we call the spherical state; the minimal index is neither additive nor multiplicative (it is submultiplicative), contrary to the subfactor case. So we introduce a matrix dimension with the good functorial properties: it is always additive and multiplicative. The minimal index turns out to be the square of the norm of the matrix dimensio…
Motivated by the relation between the Drinfeld double and central property (T) for quantum groups, given a rigid C*-tensor category C and a unitary half-braiding on an ind-object, we construct a *-representation of the fusion algebra of C. This allows us to present an alternative approach to recent results of Popa and Vaes, who defined C*-algebras of monoidal categories and introduced property (T) for them. As an example we analyze categories C of Hilbert bimodules over a II$_1$-factor. We show that in this case the Drinfeld center is monoidally equivalent to a category of Hilbert bimodules ov…
Based on Garner's discovery that topological categories are total categories enriched in a quantaloid, this paper presents a series of results related to initial and final density in categorical topology via (co)density in quantaloid-enriched categories, focusing on (co-)Sierpiński objects, Galois correspondences and their fixed points.
Generalising Nachbin's theory of "topology and order", in this paper we continue the study of quantale-enriched categories equipped with a compact Hausdorff topology. We compare these $\mathcal{V}$-categorical compact Hausdorff spaces with ultrafilter-quantale-enriched categories, and show that the presence of a compact Hausdorff topology guarantees Cauchy completeness and (suitably defined) codirected completeness of the underlying quantale enriched category.
Using generalized enriched categories, in this paper we show that Rosický's proof of cartesian closedness of the exact completion of the category of topological spaces can be extended to a wide range of topological categories over $\mathsf{Set}$, like metric spaces, approach spaces, ultrametric spaces, probabilistic metric spaces, and bitopological spaces. In order to do so we prove a sufficient criterion for exponentiability of $(\mathbb{T},V)$-categories and show that, under suitable conditions, every $(\mathbb{T},V)$-injective category is exponentiable in $(\mathbb{T},V)\text{-}\mathsf{Cat}…
We firstly introduce some key concepts in category theory, such as quotient category, completion of limits, $\mathrm{Mor}$ category, and so on; then give the concept of topology algebras and sheaves, and discuss how to restore the structue of sheaves from their stalks; lastly, we introduce the sheaf-theoretical expression for topological spaces, and rediscribe some essential items in topology and geometry by defining a kind of generally existing category sheaves.
The well-known Lawvere category R of extended real positive numbers comes with a monoidal closed structure where the tensor product is the sum. But R has another such structure, given by multiplication, which is *-autonomous. Normed sets, with a norm in R, inherit thus two symmetric monoidal closed structures, and categories enriched on one of them have a 'subadditive' or 'submultiplicative' norm, respectively. Typically, the first case occurs when the norm expresses a cost, the second with Lipschitz norms. This paper is a preparation for a sequel, devoted to 'weighted algebraic topology', an …
Quillen's notion of small object and the Gabriel-Ulmer notion of finitely presentable or generated object are fundamental in homotopy theory and categorical algebra. Do these notions always lead to rather uninteresting classes of objects in categories of topological spaces, such as all finite discrete spaces, or just the empty space, as the examples and remarks in the existing literature may suggest? This article demonstrates that the establishment of full characterizations of these notions (and some natural variations thereof) in many familiar categories of spaces can be quite challenging and…
Given a simply connected manifold M such that its cochain algebra, C^\star(M), is a pure Sullivan dga, this paper considers curved deformations of the algebra C_\star(ΩM) and consider when the category of curved modules over these algebras becomes fully dualizable. For simple manifolds, like products of spheres, we are able to give an explicit criterion for when the resulting category of curved modules is smooth, proper and CY and thus gives rise to a TQFT. We give Floer theoretic interpretations of these theories for projective spaces and their products, which involve defining a Fukaya catego…
We prove that the collection of model structures on (quasicoherent) module categories does not obey flat descent. In particular, it fails to be a separated presheaf, in the fppf topology, on Artin stacks.
Restriction categories were established to handle maps that are partially defined with respect to composition. Tensor topology realises that monoidal categories have an intrinsic notion of space, and deals with objects and maps that are partially defined with respect to this spatial structure. We introduce a construction that turns a firm monoidal category into a restriction category and axiomatise the monoidal restriction categories that arise this way, called tensor-restriction categories.
We show that the author's notion of Galois extensions of braided tensor categories [22], see also [3], gives rise to braided crossed G-categories, recently introduced for the purposes of 3-manifold topology [31]. The Galois extensions C \rtimes S are studied in detail, and we determine for which g in G non-trivial objects of grade g exist in C \rtimes S.
In these self-contained low prerequisite introductory notes we first present (in part 1) basic concepts of set theory and algebra without explicit category theory. We then present (in part 2) basic category theory involving a somewhat detailed discussion of system limits and the exact imbedding of abelian categories. This is followed (in part 3) by a discussion of localization, homological algebra, and generalizations of additive and abelian categories such as triangulated and derived categories. Based on the concepts of category theory from parts 2 and 3, (in part 4) we provide hints for cons…
Higher-dimensional category theory is the study of n-categories, operads, braided monoidal categories, and other such exotic structures. Although it can be treated purely as an algebraic subject, it is inherently topological in nature: the higher-dimensional diagrams one draws to represent these structures can be taken quite literally as pieces of topology. Examples of this are the braids in a braided monoidal category, and the pentagon which appears in the definitions of both monoidal category and A_infinity space. I will try to give a Friday-afternoonish description of some of the dreams peo…
We define and characterise small support for complexes over non-Noetherian rings and in this context prove a vanishing theorem for modules. Our definition of support makes sense for any rigidly compactly generated tensor triangulated category. Working in this generality, we establish basic properties of support and investigate when it detects vanishing. We use pointless topology to relate support, the topology of the Balmer spectrum, and the structure of the idempotent Bousfield lattice.
For a quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$, considered as a bicategory, Walters introduced categories enriched in $\mathcal{Q}$. Here we extend the study of monad-quantale-enriched categories of the past fifteen years by introducing monad-quantaloid-enriched categories. We do so by making lax distributive laws of a monad $\mathbb{T}$ over the discrete presheaf monad of the small quantaloid $\mathcal{Q}$ the primary data of the theory, rather than the lax monad extensions of $\mathbb{T}$ to the category of $\mathcal{Q}$-relations that they equivalently describe. The central piece of the paper establishes a…
As composites of constant, (co)product, identity, and powerset functors, Kripke polynomial functors form a relevant class of $\mathsf{Set}$-functors in the theory of coalgebras. The main goal of this paper is to expand the theory of limits in categories of coalgebras of Kripke polynomial functors to the context of quantale-enriched categories. To assume the role of the powerset functor we consider "powerset-like" functors based on the Hausdorff $\mathsf{V}$-category structure. As a starting point, we show that for a lifting of a $\mathsf{SET}$-functor to a topological category $\mathsf{X}$ ove…
We rewrite classical topological definitions using the category-theoretic notation of arrows and are led to concise reformulations in terms of simplicial categories and orthogonality of morphisms, which we hope might be of use in the formalisation of topology and in developing the tame topology of Grothendieck. Namely, we observe that topological and uniform spaces are simplicial objects in the same category, a category of filters, and that a number of elementary properties can be obtained by repeatedly passing to the left or right orthogonal (in the sense of Quillen model categories) starting…
Comodules over Hopf algebroids are of central importance in algebraic topology. It is well-known that a Hopf algebroid is the same thing as a presheaf of groupoids on Aff, the opposite category of commutative rings. We show in this paper that a comodule is the same thing as a quasi-coherent sheaf over this presheaf of groupoids. We prove the general theorem that internal equivalences of presheaves of groupoids with respect to a Grothendieck topology on Aff give rise to equivalences of categories of sheaves in that topology. We then show using faithfully flat descent that an internal equivalenc…
