Analogous to subfactor theory, employing Watatani's notions of index and $C^*$-basic construction of certain inclusions of $C^*$-algebras, (a) we develop a Fourier theory (consisting of Fourier transforms, rotation maps and shift operators) on the relative commutants of any inclusion of simple unital $C^*$-algebras with finite Watatani index, and (b) we introduce the notions of interior and exterior angles between intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of any inclusion of unital $C^*$-algebras admitting a finite index conditional expectation. Then, on the lines of [2], we apply these concepts to obtain a bound for the cardinality of the lattice of intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of any irreducible inclusion as in (a), and improve Longo's bound for the cardinality of intermediate subfactors of an inclusion of type $III$ factors with finite index. Moreover, we also show that for a fairly large class of inclusions of finite von Neumann algebras, the lattice of intermediate von Neumann subalgebras is always finite.
We study uniform perturbations of intermediate C*-subalgebras of inclusions of simple C*-algebras. If a unital simple C*-algebra has a simple C*-subalgebra of finite index, then sufficiently close simple intermediate C*-subalgebras are unitarily equivalent. These C*-subalgebras need not to be nuclear. The unitary can be chosen in the relative commutant algebra. An imediate corollary is the following: If the relative commutant is trivial, then the set of intermediate C*-subagebras is a finite set.
In this paper we introduce a row version of Kadison and Kastler's metric on the set of C*-subalgebras of $\mathbb{B}(\mathcal{H})$. By showing C*-algebras have row length (in the sense of Pisier) of at most 2 we show that the row metric is equivalent to the original Kadison Kastler metric. Ino and Watatani have recently proved that in certain circumstances sufficiently close intermediate C*-algebras occur as small unitary perturbations. By adjusting their arguments to work with the row metric we are able to obtain universal constants independent of inclusions.
For a given inverse semigroup action on a topological space, one can associate an étale groupoid. We prove that there exists a correspondence between the certain subsemigroups and the open wide subgroupoids in case that the action is strongly tight. Combining with the recent result of Brown et. al, we obtain a correspondence between the certain subsemigroups of an inverse semigroup and the Cartan intermediate subalgebras of a groupoid C*-algebra.
We show that for a large class of actions $Γ\curvearrowright \mathcal{A}$ of $C^*$-simple groups $Γ$ on unital $C^*$-algebras $\mathcal{A}$, including any non-faithful action of a hyperbolic group with trivial amenable radical, every intermediate $C^*$-subalgebra $\mathcal{B}$, $C_λ^*(Γ)\subseteq \mathcal{B} \subseteq \mathcal{A}\rtimes_{r}Γ$, is of the form $\mathcal{A}_1\rtimes_{r}Γ$, where $\mathcal{A}_1$ is a unital $Γ$-$C^*$-subalgebra of $\mathcal{A}$.
Consider an inclusion of diffuse von Neumann algebras A c M . We say that A c M has the absorbing amenability property if for any diffuse subalgebra B c A and any amenable intermediate algebra B c D c M we have that D is contained in A. We prove that the cup subalgebra associated to any subfactor planar algebra has the absorbing amenability property.
Let $G$ be a discrete group acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ by properly outer $*$-automorphisms. In this paper we study the containment $M \subseteq M\rtimes_αG$ of $M$ inside the crossed product. We characterize the intermediate von Neumann algebras, extending earlier work of other authors in the factor case. We also determine the $M$-bimodules that are closed in the Bures topology and which coincide with the $w^*$-closed ones under a mild hypothesis on $G$. We use these results to obtain a general version of Mercer's theorem concerning the extension of certain isometric $w^*$-continuous …
We investigate the connections between order and algebra in the hereditary C*-subalgebra lattice $\mathcal{H}(A)$ and *-annihilator ortholattice $\mathscr{P}(A)^\perp$. In particular, we characterize $\vee$-distributive elements of $\mathcal{H}(A)$ as ideals, answering a 25 year old question, allowing the quantale structure of $\mathcal{H}(A)$ to be completely determined from its lattice structure. We also show that $\mathscr{P}(A)^\perp$ is separative, allowing for C*-algebra type decompositions which are completely consistent with the original von Neumann algebra type decompositions.
We provide a complete classification of unitary subalgebras of even rank-one lattice vertex operator algebras. As a consequence of the correspondence between vertex operator algebras and conformal nets, we also obtain a complete classification of conformal subnets of even rank-one lattice conformal nets.
Let $A$ be a C$^*$-algebra and let $D$ be a Cartan subalgebra of $A$. We study the following question: if $B$ is a C$^*$-algebra such that $D \subseteq B \subseteq A$, is $D$ a Cartan subalgebra of $B$? We give a positive answer in two cases: the case when there is a faithful conditional expectation from $A$ onto $B$, and the case when $A$ is nuclear and $D$ is a C$^*$-diagonal of $A$. In both cases there is a one-to-one correspondence between the intermediate C$^*$-algebras $B$, and a class of open subgroupoids of the groupoid $G$, where $Σ\rightarrow G$ is the twist associated with the embed…
Let $(M, φ) = (M_1, φ_1) \ast (M_2, φ_2)$ be a free product of arbitrary von Neumann algebras endowed with faithful normal states. Assume that the centralizer $M_1^{φ_1}$ is diffuse. We first show that any intermediate subalgebra $M_1 \subset Q \subset M$ which has nontrivial central sequences in $M$ is necessarily equal to $M_1$. Then we obtain a general structural result for all the intermediate subalgebras $M_1 \subset Q \subset M$ with expectation. We deduce that any diffuse amenable von Neumann algebra can be concretely realized as a maximal amenable subalgebra with expectation inside a f…
A subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ of a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{M}$ is logmodular (resp. has factorization) if the set $\{a^*a; a\text{ is invertible with }a,a^{-1}\in\mathcal{A}\}$ is dense in (resp. equal to) the set of all positive and invertible elements of $\mathcal{M}$. There are large classes of well studied algebras, both in commutative and non-commutative settings, which are known to be logmodular. In this paper, we show that the lattice of projections in a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ whose ranges are invariant under a logmodular algebra in $\mathcal{M}$, is a commutative subspace latti…
Given an irreducible lattice $Γ$ in the product of higher rank simple Lie groups, we prove a co-finiteness result for the $Γ$-invariant von Neumann subalgebras of the group von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(Γ)$, and for the $Γ$-invariant unital $C^*$-subalgebras of the reduced group $C^*$-algebra $C^*_{\rm red}(Γ)$. We use these results to show that: (i) every $Γ$-invariant von Neumann subalgebra of $\mathcal{L}(Γ)$ is generated by a normal subgroup; and (ii) given a non-amenable unitary representation $π$ of $Γ$, every $Γ$-equivariant conditional expectation on $C^*_π(Γ)$ is the canonical cond…
We aim to characterize the category of injective *-homomorphisms between commutative C*-subalgebras of a given C*-algebra A. We reduce this problem to finding a weakly terminal commutative subalgebra of A, and solve the latter for various C*-algebras, including all commutative ones and all type I von Neumann algebras. This addresses a natural generalization of the Mackey-Piron programme: which lattices are those of closed subspaces of Hilbert space? We also discuss the way this categorified generalization differs from the original question.
A simple Steinberg algebra associated to an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ is algebraically purely infinite if and only if the characteristic functions of compact open subsets of the unit space are infinite idempotents. If a simple Steinberg algebra is algebraically purely infinite, then the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(G)$ is simple and purely infinite. But the Steinberg algebra seems to small for the converse to hold. For this purpose we introduce an intermediate $*$-algebra $B(G)$ constructed using corners $1_U C^*_r(G) 1_U$ for all compact open subsets $U$ of the unit space of the g…
We establish a Galois correspondence for finite quantum groupoid actions on II_1 factors and show that every finite index and finite depth subfactor is an intermediate subalgebra of a quantum groupoid crossed product. Moreover, any such a subfactor is completely and canonically determined by a quantum groupoid and its coideal *-subalgebra. This allows to express the bimodule category of a subfactor in terms of the representation category of a corresponding quantum groupoid and the principal graph as the Bratteli diagram of an inclusion of certain C^*-algebras related to it.
We study uniform perturbations of crossed product C$^*$-algebras by amenable groups. Given a unital inclusion of C$^*$-algebras $C\subseteq D$ and sufficiently close separable intermediate C$^*$-subalgebras $A$, $B$ for this inclusion with a conditional expectation from $D$ onto $B$, if $A=C\rtimes G$ with $G$ discrete amenable, then $A$ and $B$ are isomorphic. Furthermore, if $C\subseteq D$ is irreducible, then $A=B$.
We prove that the very simple lattices which consist of a largest, a smallest and $2n$ pairwise incomparable elements where $n$ is a positive integer can be realized as the lattices of intermediate subfactors of finite index and finite depth. Using the same techniques, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for subfactors coming from Loop groups of type $A$ at generic levels to be maximal.
The Bost-Connes Hecke C^*-algebra can be regarded as a direct limit of subalgebras involving finite sets of primes. Each of these finite-prime analogues of the Bost-Connes algebra is a crossed product by a semigroup N^F, where F is finite. We describe composition series of ideals for these semigroup crossed products in which the intermediate subquotients are finite direct sums of classifiable AT-algebras. We then use similar techniques to identify subquotients of the Bost-Connes algebra as classifiable AT-algebras.
We give a framework to produce C*-algebra inclusions with extreme properties. This gives the first constructive nuclear minimal ambient C*-algebras. We further obtain a purely infinite analogue of Dadarlat's modeling theorem on AF-algebras: Every Kirchberg algebra is rigidly and KK-equivalently sandwiched by non-nuclear C*-algebras without intermediate C*-algebras. Finally we reveal a novel property of Kirchberg algebras: They embed into arbitrarily wild C*-algebras as rigid maximal C*-subalgebras.
Within the C*-algebraic framework of the resolvent algebra for canonical quantum systems, the structure of oscillating lattice systems with bounded nearest neighbor interactions is studied in any number of dimensions. The global dynamics of such systems acts on the resolvent algebra by automorphisms and there exists a (in any regular representation) weakly dense subalgebra on which this action is pointwise norm continuous. Based on this observation, equilibrium (KMS) states as well as ground states are constructed which are shown to be regular. It is also indicated how to deal with singular in…
Let R be a von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space H and let R_sa be the set of selfadjoint elements of R. It is well known that R_sa is a lattice with respect to the usual partial order ≤ if and only if R is abelian. We define and study a new partial order on R_sa, the spectral order ≤_s, which extends ≤ on projections, is coarser than the usual one, but agrees with it on abelian subalgebras, and turns R_sa into a boundedly complete lattice. The effect algebra E(R) := {A | 0 ≤ A ≤ I} is then a complete lattice and we show that the mapping A --> R(A), where …
