Given any irreducible inclusion $\mB \subset \mA$ of unital $C^*$-algebras with a finite-index conditional expectation $E: \mA \to \mB$, we show that the set of $E$-compatible intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras is finite, thereby generalizing a finiteness result of Ino and Watatani (from \cite{IW}). A finiteness result for a certain collection of intermediate $C^*$-subalgebras of a non-irreducible inclusion of simple unital $C^*$-algebras is also obtained, which provides a $C^*$-version of a finiteness result of Khoshkam and Mashood (from \cite{KM}).
Apart from these finiteness results, comparisons between various notions of distance between subalgebras of operator algebras by Kadison-Kastler, Christensen and Mashood-Taylor are made. Further, these comparisons are used satisfactorily to provide some concrete calculations of distance between operator algebras associated to two distinct subgroups of a given discrete group.
We construct Cartan subalgebras in all classifiable stably finite C*-algebras. Together with known constructions of Cartan subalgebras in all UCT Kirchberg algebras, this shows that every classifiable simple C*-algebra has a Cartan subalgebra.
We initiate the study of Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras, with a particular focus on existence and uniqueness questions. For homogeneous C*-algebras, these questions can be analysed systematically using the theory of fibre bundles. For group C*-algebras, while we are able to find Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras of many connected Lie groups, there are classes of (discrete) groups, for instance non-abelian free groups, whose reduced group C*-algebras do not have any Cartan subalgebras. Moreover, we show that uniqueness of Cartan subalgebras usually fails for classifiable C*-algebras. However…
Let $A$ be a $C^*$-algebra. It is shown that the following conditions are equinvalent: (1) $A$ is scattered, (2) every $C^*$-subalgebra of $A$ is AF, (3) every $C^*$-subalgebra of $A$ has real rank zero.
The study of different types of ideals in non self-adjoint operator algebras has been a topic of recent research. This study focuses on principal ideals in subalgebras of groupoid C*-algebras. An ideal is said to be principal if it is generated by a single element of the algebra. We look at subalgebras of r-discrete principal groupoid C*-algebras and prove that these algebras are principal ideal algebras. Regular canonical subalgebras of almost finite C*-algebras have digraph algebras as their building blocks. The spectrum of almost finite C*-algebras has the structure of an r-discrete princip…
We show that semiprojectivity of a C*-algebra is preserved when passing to C*-subalgebras of finite codimension. In particular, any pullback of two semiprojective C*-algebras over a finite-dimensional C*-algebra is again semiprojective.
We study uniform perturbations of intermediate C*-subalgebras of inclusions of simple C*-algebras. If a unital simple C*-algebra has a simple C*-subalgebra of finite index, then sufficiently close simple intermediate C*-subalgebras are unitarily equivalent. These C*-subalgebras need not to be nuclear. The unitary can be chosen in the relative commutant algebra. An imediate corollary is the following: If the relative commutant is trivial, then the set of intermediate C*-subagebras is a finite set.
According to J. Feldman and C. Moore's well-known theorem on Cartan subalgebras, a variant of the group measure space construction gives an equivalence of categories between twisted countable standard measured equivalence relations and Cartan pairs, i.e. a von Neumann algebra (on a separable Hilbert space) together with a Cartan subalgebra. A. Kumjian gave a C*-algebraic analogue of this theorem in the early eighties. After a short survey of maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebras in operator algebras, I present a natural definition of a Cartan subalgebra in a C*-algebra and an extension of K…
We show that any order isomorphism between ordered structures of associative unital JB-subalgebras of JBW algebras is implemented naturally by a Jordan isomorphism. Consequently, JBW algebras are determined by the structure of their associative unital JB subalgebras. Further we show that in a similar way it is possible to reconstruct Jordan structure from the order structure of associative subalgebras endowed with an orthogonality relation. In case of abelian subalgebras of von Neuman algebra it is we shown that order isomorphisms of the structure of abelian C*-subalgebras that are well behave…
We investigate subalgebras $A$ of the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal O}_n$ that arise as finite direct sums of corners of the UHF-subalgebra ${\mathcal F}_n$. For such an $A$, we completely determine its normalizer group inside ${\mathcal O}_n$.
In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of two hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over a finite dimensional subalgebra. In general the free product is a finite direct sum of interpolated free group factors and a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra. We then show that the class of von Neumann algebras of this form is closed under taking amalgamated free products over finite dimensional subalgebras.
In this article, we give explicit examples of maximal amenable subalgebras of the $q$-Gaussian algebras, namely, the generator subalgebra is maximal amenable inside the $q$-Gaussian algebras for real numbers $q$ with its absolute value sufficiently small. To achieve this, we construct a Riesz basis in the spirit of Rădulescu and develop a structural theorem for the $q$-Gaussian algebras.
We completely classify Cartan subalgebras of dimension drop algebras with coprime parameters. More generally, we classify Cartan subalgebras of arbitrary stabilised dimension drop algebras that are non-degenerate in the sense that the dimensions of their fibres in the endpoints are maximal. Conjugacy classes by an automorphism are parametrised by certain congruence classes of matrices over the natural numbers with prescribed row and column sums. In particular, each dimension drop algebra admits only finitely many non-degenerate Cartan subalgebras up to conjugacy. As a consequence of this param…
We construct dense, unconditional subalgebras of the reduced group $C^*$-algebra of a word-hyperbolic group, which are closed under holomorphic functional calculus and possess many bounded traces. Applications to the cyclic cohomology of group $C^*$-algebras and to delocalized $L^2$-invariants of negatively curved manifolds are given.
We generalize some technical results of Glicksberg to the realm of general operator algebras and use them to give a characterization of open and closed projections in terms of certain multiplier algebras. This generalizes a theorem of J. Wells characterizing an important class of ideals in uniform algebras. The difficult implication in our main theorem is that if a projection is open in an operator algebra, then the multiplier algebra of the associated hereditary subalgebra arises as the closure of the subalgebra with respect to the strict topology of the multiplier algebra of a naturally asso…
We give several examples of Douglas Algebras that do not have any maximal subalgebra. We find a condition on these algebras that guarantees that some do not have any minimal superalgebra. We also show that if $A$ is the only maximal subalgebra of a Douglas algebra $B$, then the algebra $A$ does not have any maximal subalgebra.
We develop a general approach to the problem of classification of weak coideal C*-subalgebras of weak Hopf C*-algebras. As an example, we consider weak Hopf C*-algebras and their weak coideal C*-subalgebras associated with Tambara Yamagami categories.
For all transcendental parameters, the irrational rotation algebra is shown to contain infinitely many C*-subalgebras satisfying the following properties. Each subalgebra is isomorphic to a direct sum of two matrix algebras of the same (perfect square) dimension; the Fourier transform maps each summand onto the other; the corresponding unit projection is approximately central; the compressions of the canonical generators of the irrational rotation algebra are approximately contained in the subalgebra.
In this paper, we prove that the cycline subalgbra of a $k$-graph C*-algebra is maximal abelian, and show when it is a Cartan subalgebra (in the sense of Renault).
To every subfactor planar algebra was associated a II_1 factor with a canonical abelian subalgebra generated by the cup tangle. Using Popa's approximative orthogonality property, we show that this cup subalgebra is maximal amenable.
In this short note we classify the Cartan subalgebras in all von Neumann algebras associated with graph product groups and their free ergodic measure preserving actions on probability spaces.
Given $-1 < q < 1$ and a separable real Hilbert space with dimension no less than 2, we prove that the generator subalgebra in the $q$-Gaussian algebra is singular.
We show that every logmodular subalgebra of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ is unitary equivalent to an algebra of block upper triangular matrices, which was conjectured in \cite{VM}. In particular, this shows that every unital contractive representation of a logmodular subalgebra of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ is automatically completely contractive.
In this paper, we study a family of $C^*$-subalgebras defined by fixed points of generalized gauge actions of a Cuntz-Krieger algebra, by introducing a family of étale groupoids whose associated $C^*$-algebras are these $C^*$-subalgebras. We know that topological conjugacy classes of one-sided topological Markov shifts are characterized in terms of the isomorphism classes of these étale groupoids.
In this paper, we determine the isomorphic classes of Morita equivalent subalgebras of irrational rotation algebras. It is based on the solution of the quadratic Diophantine equations. We determine the irrational rotation algebras that have locally trivial inclusions. We compute the index of the locally trivial inclusions of irrational rotation algebras.
We give an example of a dense, simple, unital Banach subalgebra $A$ of the irrational rotation C*-algebra $B$, such that $A$ is not a spectral subalgebra of $B$. This answers a question posed in T.W. Palmer's paper [1].
We prove that for the mixed $q$-Gaussian algebra $Γ_{Q}(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ associated to a real Hilbert space $H_{\mathbb{R}}$ and a real symmetric matrix $Q=(q_{ij})$ with $\sup|q_{ij}|<1$, the generator subalgebra is singular.
It is shown that all the approximately finite dimensional C*-algebras which are not of Type I are isomorphic as Banach spaces. This generalises the matroid case given previously by Arazy. Analogous results are obtained for various families of triangular subalgebras of AF C*-algebras. In addition the classification of various continua of Type I AF C*-algebras is discussed.
We introduce a family of dense subalgebras of the Toeplitz algebra and give conditions under which our algebras are quasi-free. As a corollary, we show that the smooth Toeplitz algebra introduced by Cuntz is quasi-free.
We prove six-term exact sequences of Pimsner-Voiculescu type for certain subalgebras of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. This sequence may, in particular, be applied to smooth subalgebras of the Quantum Heisenberg Manifolds in order to compute the generators of their cyclic cohomology. Further, our results include the known results for smooth crossed products. Our proof is based on a combination of arguments from the setting of (Cuntz-)Pimsner algebras and the Toeplitz proof of Bott-periodicity.
We investigate pairwise quasi-orthogonal subalgebras in $M_{p^{kn}}$ which are isomorphic to $M_{p^{k}}$ for $k \ge 1$, $n \ge 2$ and a prime number $p$ with $p \ge 3$. We prove there exist $p^{2kn}-1/p^{2k}-1$ such subalgebras and they span $M_{p^{kn}}$.
