The study of different types of ideals in non self-adjoint operator algebras has been a topic of recent research. This study focuses on principal ideals in subalgebras of groupoid C*-algebras. An ideal is said to be principal if it is generated by a single element of the algebra. We look at subalgebras of r-discrete principal groupoid C*-algebras and prove that these algebras are principal ideal algebras. Regular canonical subalgebras of almost finite C*-algebras have digraph algebras as their building blocks. The spectrum of almost finite C*-algebras has the structure of an r-discrete principal groupoid and this helps in the coordinization of these algebras. Regular canonical subalgebras of almost finite C*-algebras have representations in terms of open subsets of the spectrum for the enveloping C*-algebra. We conclude that regular canonical subalgebras are principal ideal algebras.
Renault proved in 2008 that if $G$ is a topologically principal groupoid, then $C_0(G^{(0)})$ is a Cartan subalgebra in $C^*_r(G, Σ)$ for any twist $Σ$ over $G$. However, there are many groupoids which are not topologically principal, yet their (twisted) $C^*$-algebras admit Cartan subalgebras. This paper gives a dynamical description of a class of such Cartan subalgebras, by identifying conditions on a 2-cocycle $c$ on $G$ and a subgroupoid $S \subseteq G$ under which $C^*_r(S, c)$ is Cartan in $C^*_r(G, c)$. When $G$ is a discrete group, we also describe the Weyl groupoid and twist associate…
When the reduced twisted $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$ of a non-principal groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ admits a Cartan subalgebra, Renault's work on Cartan subalgebras implies the existence of another groupoid description of $C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, c)$. In an earlier paper, joint with Reznikoff and Wright, we identified situations where such a Cartan subalgebra arises from a subgroupoid $\mathcal{S}$ of $\mathcal{G}$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the original groupoids $\mathcal{S}, \mathcal{G}$ and the Weyl groupoid and twist associated to the Cartan pair. We first identify …
The reduced $C^*$-algebra of the interior of the isotropy in any Hausdorff étale groupoid $G$ embeds as a $C^*$-subalgebra $M$ of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$. We prove that the set of pure states of $M$ with unique extension is dense, and deduce that any representation of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$ that is injective on $M$ is faithful. We prove that there is a conditional expectation from the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$ onto $M$ if and only if the interior of the isotropy in $G$ is closed. Using this, we prove that when the interior of the isotropy is abelian and closed, $M$ is a C…
We construct ample groupoids from certain categories of paths, and prove that their $C^*$-algebras coincide with the continued fraction AF algebras of Effros and Shen. The proof relies on recent classification results for simple nuclear $C^*$-algebras. The groupoids are not principal. This provides examples of Cartan subalgebras in the continued fraction AF algebras that are isomorphic, but not conjugate, to the standard diagonal subalgebras.
Suppose G is a second countable, locally compact, Hausdorff, principal groupoid with a fixed left Haar system. We define a notion of integrability for groupoids, and show G is integrable if and only if the groupoid C*-algebra C*(G) has bounded trace.
From a suitable groupoid G, we show how to construct an amenable principal groupoid whose C*-algebra is a Kirchberg algebra which is KK-equivalent to C*(G). Using this construction, we show by example that many UCT Kirchberg algebras can be realised as the C*-algebras of amenable principal groupoids.
Let $C^*$-algebra that is acted upon by a compact abelian group. We show that if the fixed-point algebra of the action contains a Cartan subalgebra $D$ satisfying an appropriate regularity condition, then $A$ is the reduced $C^*$-algebra of a groupoid twist. We further show that the embedding $D \hookrightarrow A$ is uniquely determined by the twist. These results generalize Renault's results on Cartan subalgebras of $C^*$-algebras.
We investigate recent uniqueness theorems for reduced $C^*$-algebras of Hausdorff étale groupoids in the context of inverse semigroups. In many cases the distinguished subalgebra is closely related to the structure of the inverse semigroup. In order to apply our results to full $C^*$-algebras, we also investigate amenability. More specifically, we obtain conditions that guarantee amenability of the universal groupoid for certain classes of inverse semigroups. These conditions also imply the existence of a conditional expectation onto a canonical subalgebra.
Suppose $G$ is a second countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid with a fixed left Haar system. Let $\go/G$ denote the orbit space of $G$ and $\cs(G)$ denote the groupoid $C^*$-algebra. Suppose that $G$ is a principal groupoid. We show that $C^*(G)$ is CCR if and only if $\go/G$ is a $T_1$ topological space, and that $C^*(G)$ is GCR if and only if $\go/G$ is a $T_0$ topological space. We also show that $C^*(G)$ is a Fell Algebra if and only if $G$ is a Cartan groupoid.
In this paper, two sufficient and necessary conditions are given. The first one characterizes when the boundary path groupoid of a topological graph without singular vertices has closed interior of its isotropy group bundle, and the second one characterizes when the path groupoid of a row-finite k-graph without sources has closed interior of its isotropy group bundle. It follows that the associated topological graph algebra and the associated k-graph C*-algebra have Cartan subalgebras due to a result of Brown-Nagy-Reznikoff-Sims-Williams.
Given a free and proper action of a groupoid on a Fell bundle (over another groupoid), we give an equivalence between the semidirect-product and the generalized-fixed-point Fell bundles, generalizing an earlier result where the action was by a group. As an application, we show that the Stabilization Theorem for Fell bundles over groupoids is essentially another form of crossed-product duality.
In this paper we exploit the fact that a Cuntz C$^*$-algebra is a groupoid C$^*$-algebra to facilitate the study of non-self-adjoint subalgebras of $O_n$. The Cuntz groupoid is not principal and the spectral theorem for bimodules does not apply in full generality. We characterize the bimodules (over a natural masa) which are determined by their spectra in the Cuntz groupoid; these are exactly the ones which are invariant under the guage automorphisms and exactly the ones which are generated by the Cuntz partial isometries which they contain. We investigate analytic subalgebras of $O_n, n$ fini…
A simple Steinberg algebra associated to an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ is algebraically purely infinite if and only if the characteristic functions of compact open subsets of the unit space are infinite idempotents. If a simple Steinberg algebra is algebraically purely infinite, then the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(G)$ is simple and purely infinite. But the Steinberg algebra seems to small for the converse to hold. For this purpose we introduce an intermediate $*$-algebra $B(G)$ constructed using corners $1_U C^*_r(G) 1_U$ for all compact open subsets $U$ of the unit space of the g…
We prove a spectral theorem for bimodules in the context of graph C*-algebras. A bimodule over a suitable abelian algebra is determined by its spectrum (i.e., its groupoid partial order) iff it is generated by the Cuntz-Krieger partial isometries which it contains iff it is invariant under the gauge automorphisms. We study 1-cocycles on the Cuntz-Krieger groupoid associated with a graph C*-algebra, obtaining results on when integer valued or bounded cocycles on the natural AF subgroupoid extend. To a finite graph with a total order, we associate a nest subalgebra of the graph C*-algebra and th…
We define the notion of a principal S-bundle where S is a groupoid group bundle and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between principal S-bundles and elements of a sheaf cohomology group associated to S. We also define the notion of a locally unitary action and show that the spectrum of the crossed product is a principal bundle. Furthermore, we prove that the isomorphism class of the spectrum determines the exterior equivalence class of the action and that every principal bundle can be realized as the spectrum of some locally unitary crossed product.
In this paper, we study a family of $C^*$-subalgebras defined by fixed points of generalized gauge actions of a Cuntz-Krieger algebra, by introducing a family of étale groupoids whose associated $C^*$-algebras are these $C^*$-subalgebras. We know that topological conjugacy classes of one-sided topological Markov shifts are characterized in terms of the isomorphism classes of these étale groupoids.
We establish a Galois correspondence for finite quantum groupoid actions on II_1 factors and show that every finite index and finite depth subfactor is an intermediate subalgebra of a quantum groupoid crossed product. Moreover, any such a subfactor is completely and canonically determined by a quantum groupoid and its coideal *-subalgebra. This allows to express the bimodule category of a subfactor in terms of the representation category of a corresponding quantum groupoid and the principal graph as the Bratteli diagram of an inclusion of certain C^*-algebras related to it.
We construct examples of principal groupoids that have weak containment but are not amenable, thus answering questions by Claire Anantharaman-Delaroche and Rufus Willett.
For a given inverse semigroup action on a topological space, one can associate an étale groupoid. We prove that there exists a correspondence between the certain subsemigroups and the open wide subgroupoids in case that the action is strongly tight. Combining with the recent result of Brown et. al, we obtain a correspondence between the certain subsemigroups of an inverse semigroup and the Cartan intermediate subalgebras of a groupoid C*-algebra.
We present examples of non-Hausdorff, etale, essentially principal groupoids for which three results, known to hold in the Hausdorff case, fail. These results are: (A) the subalgebra of continuous functions on the unit space is maximal abelian within the reduced groupoid C*-algebra, (B) every nonzero ideal of the reduced groupoid C*-algebra has a nonzero intersection with the subalgebra of continuous functions on the unit space, and (C) the open support of a normalizer is a bissection.
We consider the Hecke pair consisting of the group $P^+_K$ of affine transformations of a number field $K$ that preserve the orientation in every real embedding and the subgroup $P^+_O$ consisting of transformations with algebraic integer coefficients. The associated Hecke algebra $C^*(P^+_K,P^+_O)$ has a natural time evolution $σ$, and we describe the corresponding phase transition for KMS$_β$-states and for ground states. From work of Yalkinoglu and Neshveyev it is known that a Bost-Connes type system associated to $K$ has an essentially unique arithmetic subalgebra. When we import this suba…
We develop a framework suitable for obtaining simplicity criteria for reduced $C^*$-algebras of Hausdorff etale groupoids. This is based on the study of certain non-degenerate $C^*$-subalgebras (in the case of groupoids, the $C^*$-algebra of the interior isotropy bundle), for which one can control (non-unique) state extensions to the ambient C*-algebra. As an application, we give simplicity criteria for reduced crossed products of abelian $C^*$-algebras by discrete groups.
We discuss the relative K-theory for a $C^{*}$-algebra, $A$, together with a $C^{*}$-subalgebra, $A' \subseteq A$. The relative group is denoted $K_{i}(A';A), i = 0, 1$, and is due to Karoubi. We present a situation of two pairs $A' \subseteq A$ and $B' \subseteq B$ are related so that there is a natural isomorphism between their respective relative K-theories. We also discuss applications to the case where $A$ and $B$ are $C^{*}$-algebras of a pair of locally compact, Hausdorff topological groupoids, with Haar systems.
We examine a semigroup analogue of the Kumjian-Renault representation of C*-algebras with Cartan subalgebras on twisted groupoids. Specifically, we show how to represent semigroups with distinguished normal subsemigroups as `slice-sections' of groupoid bundles.
In 1990, Rieffel defined a notion of proper action of a group $H$ on a $C^*$-algebra $A$. He then defined a generalized fixed point algebra $A^α$ for this action and showed that $A^α$ is Morita equivalent to an ideal of the reduced crossed product. We generalize Rieffel's notion to define proper groupoid dynamical systems and show that the generalized fixed point algebra for proper groupoid actions is Morita equivalent to a subalgebra of the reduced crossed product. We give some nontrivial examples of proper groupoid dynamical systems and show that if $(\A, G, α)$ is a groupoid dynamical syste…
This dissertation concerns the classification of groupoid and higher-rank graph C*-algebras and has two main components. Firstly, for a groupoid it is shown that the notions of strength of convergence in the orbit space and measure-theoretic accumulation along the orbits are equivalent ways of realising multiplicity numbers associated to a sequence of induced representations of the groupoid C*-algebra. Examples of directed graphs are given, showing how to determine the multiplicity numbers associated to various sequences of induced representations of the directed graph C*-algebras. The second …
In this paper, we study the ideal structure of reduced $C^*$-algebras $C^*_r(G)$ associated to étale groupoids $G$. In particular, we characterize when there is a one-to-one correspondence between the closed, two-sided ideals in $C_r^*(G)$ and the open invariant subsets of the unit space $G^{(0)}$ of $G$. As a consequence, we show that if $G$ is an inner exact, essentially principal, ample groupoid, then $C_r^*(G)$ is (strongly) purely infinite if and only if every non-zero projection in $C_0(G^{(0)})$ is properly infinite in $C_r^*(G)$. We also establish a sufficient condition on the ample gr…
Every AF-algebra arises as a graph algebra in the sense of Kumjian, Pask, Raeburn, and Renault. For AF-algebras, the diagonal subalgebra defined by Stratila and Voiculescu is consistent with Kumjian's notion of diagonal, and the groupoid arising from a well-chosen Bratteli diagram for A coincides with Kumjian's twist groupoid constructed from a diagonal of A.
We introduce a class of locally compact Hausdorff groupoids and show how to associate C*-algebras to them in a way which generalizes the reduced C*-algebra of an 'etale groupoid. Focusing on criteria for simplicity and existence of Cartan subalgebras, we obtain results which both generalize and improve on the corresponding results from the 'etale case. In the second part we apply the results to dynamical systems and subshifts.
We show how to construct a graded locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid from a C*-algebra carrying a coaction of a discrete group, together with a suitable abelian subalgebra. We call this groupoid the extended Weyl groupoid. When the coaction is trivial and the subalgebra is Cartan, our groupoid agrees with Renault's Weyl groupoid. We prove that if G is a second-countable locally compact étale groupoid carrying a grading of a discrete group, and if the interior of the trivially graded isotropy is abelian and torsion free, then the extended Weyl groupoid of its reduced C*-algebra is isomorp…
Let $G$ be a Hausdorff, étale groupoid that is minimal and topologically principal. We show that $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple if and only if all the nonzero positive elements of $C_0(G^0)$ are infinite in $C_r^*(G)$. If $G$ is a Hausdorff, ample groupoid, then we show that $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple if and only if every nonzero projection in $C_0(G^0)$ is infinite in $C^*_r(G)$. We then show how this result applies to $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras. Finally, we investigate strongly purely infinite groupoid $C^*$-algebras.
We introduce the Haagerup property for twisted groupoid $C^*$-dynamical systems in terms of naturally defined positive-definite operator-valued multipliers. By developing a version of `the Haagerup trick' we prove that this property is equivalent to the Haagerup property of the reduced crossed product $C^*$-algebra with respect to the canonical conditional expectation $E$. This extends a theorem of Dong and Ruan for discrete group actions, and implies that a given Cartan inclusion of separable $C^*$-algebras has the Haagerup property if and only if the associated Weyl groupoid has the Haagerup…
We prove that the regular von Neumann subalgebras $B$ of the hyperfinite II_1 factor $R$ satisfying the condition $B'\cap R=Z(B)$ are completely classified (up to conjugacy by an automorphism of $R$) by the associated discrete measured groupoid $G$. We obtain a similar classification result for triple inclusions $A\subset B \subset R$, where $A$ is a Cartan subalgebra in $R$ and the intermediate von Neumann algebra $B$ is regular in $R$. A key step in proving these results is to show the vanishing cohomology for the associated cocycle actions of $G$ on $B$. We in fact prove two very general va…
The Cuntz algebra O_n is presented as a partial crossed product in which an amenable group partially acts on an abelian C*-algebra. The partial action is related to the Cuntz groupoid for O_n and connections are made with non-self-adjoint subalgebras of O_n, particularly the Volterra nest subalgebra. These ideas are also extended to the M_k(O_n) context.
A one-sided shift of finite type $(X_A,σ_A)$ determines on the one hand a Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal{O}_A$ with a distinguished abelian subalgebra $\mathcal{D}_A$ and a certain completely positive map $τ_A$ on $\mathcal{O}_A$. On the other hand, $(X_A,σ_A)$ determines a groupoid $\mathcal{G}_A$ together with a certain homomorphism $ε_A$ on $\mathcal{G}_A$. We show that this data completely characterizes the one-sided conjugacy class of $X_A$. This strengthens a result of Cuntz and Krieger. We also exhibit an example of two irreducible shifts of finite type which are eventually conjugate b…
We propose a definition of compact quantum groupoids in the setting of C*-algebras, associate to such a quantum groupoid a regular C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitary, and use this unitary to construct a dual Hopf C*-bimodule and to pass to a measurable quantum groupoid in the sense of Enock and Lesieur. Moreover, we discuss examples related to compact and to étale groupoids and study principal compact C*-quantum groupoids.
We study the finite versus infinite nature of C*-algebras arising from etale groupoids. For an ample groupoid G, we relate infiniteness of the reduced C*-algebra of G to notions of paradoxicality of a K-theoretic flavor. We construct a pre-ordered abelian monoid S(G) which generalizes the type semigroup introduced by Rørdam and Sierakowski for totally disconnected discrete transformation groups. This monoid reflects the finite/infinite nature of the reduced groupoid C*-algebra of G. If G is ample, minimal, and topologically principal, and S(G) is almost unperforated we obtain a dichotomy betwe…
We prove that a minimal second countable ample groupoid has dynamical comparison if and only if its type semigroup is almost unperforated. Moreover, we investigate to what extent a not necessarily minimal almost finite groupoid has an almost unperforated type semigroup. Finally, we build a bridge between coarse geometry and topological dynamics by characterizing almost finiteness of the coarse groupoid in terms of a new coarsely invariant property for metric spaces, which might be of independent interest in coarse geometry. As a consequence, we are able to construct new examples of almost fini…
Let G be a locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid in which s is a local homeomorphism and the unit space is totally disconnected. Assume there is a continuous cocycle c from G into a discrete group $Γ$. We show that the collection A(G) of locally-constant, compactly supported functions on G is a dense *-subalgebra of C_c(G) and that it is universal for algebraic representations of the collection of compact open bisections of G. We also show that if G is the groupoid associated to a row-finite graph or k-graph with no sources, then A(G) is isomorphic to the associated Leavitt path algebra or Kumji…
