We define a canonical relative commutant planar algebra from a strongly Markov inclusion of finite von Neumann algebras. In the case of a connected unital inclusion of finite dimensional C*-algebras with the Markov trace, we show this planar algebra is isomorphic to the bipartite graph planar algebra of the Bratteli diagram of the inclusion. Finally, we show that a finite depth subfactor planar algebra is a planar subalgebra of the bipartite graph planar algebra of its principal graph.
Most known examples of subfactors occur in families, coming from algebraic objects such as groups, quantum groups and rational conformal field theories. The Haagerup subfactor is the smallest index finite-depth subfactor which does not occur in one of these families. In this paper we construct the planar algebra associated to the Haagerup subfactor, which provides a new proof of the existence of the Haagerup subfactor. Our technique is to find the Haagerup planar algebra as a singly generated subfactor planar algebra, contained inside of a graph planar algebra.
We describe an explicit finite presentation for a finite depth subfactor planar algebra. We also show that such planar algebras are singly generated with the generator subject to finitely many relations.
We state a conjecture for the formulas of the depth 4 low-weight rotational eigenvectors and their corresponding eigenvalues for the $3^G$ subfactor planar algebras. We prove the conjecture in the case when $|G|$ is odd. To do so, we find an action of $G$ on the reduced subfactor planar algebra at $f^{(2)}$, which is obtained from shading the planar algebra of the even half. We also show that this reduced subfactor planar algebra is a Yang-Baxter planar algebra.
If $G$ is a countable, discrete group generated by two finite subgroups $H$ and $K$ and $P$ is a II$_1$ factor with an outer G-action, one can construct the group-type subfactor $P^H \subset P \rtimes K$ introduced in \cite{BH}. This construction was used in \cite{BH} to obtain numerous examples of infinite depth subfactors whose standard invariant has exotic growth properties. We compute the planar algebra (in the sense of Jones \cite{J2}) of this subfactor and prove that any subfactor with an abstract planar algebra of "group type" arises from such a subfactor. The action of Jones' planar op…
Bisch and Jones suggested the skein theoretic classification of planar algebras and investigated the ones generated by 2-boxes with the second author. In this paper, we consider 3-box generators and classify subfactor planar algebras generated by a non-trivial 3-box satisfying a relation proposed by Thurston. The subfactor planar algebras in the classification are either $E^6$ or the ones from representations of quantum $SU(N)$. We introduce a new method to determine positivity of planar algebras and new techniques to reduce the complexity of computations.
We find a new obstruction to the principal graphs of subfactors. It shows that in a certain family of 3-supertransitive principal graphs, there must be a cycle by depth 6, with one exception, the principal graph of the Haagerup subfactor.
This article proves the existence and uniqueness of a subfactor planar algebra with principal graph consisting of a diamond with arms of length 2 at opposite sides, which we call 2D2. We also prove the uniqueness of the subfactor planar algebra with principal graph 4442. We conjecture this will complete the list of subfactor planar algebras at index $3+\sqrt{5}$.
We present a purely planar algebraic proof of the main result of a paper of Guionnet-Jones-Shlaykhtenko which constructs an extremal subfactor from a subfactor planar algebra whose standard invariant is given by that planar algebra.
In this paper, we construct the "2221" subfactor planar algebra by finding it as a subalgebra of the graph planar algebra of its principal graph. In particular, we give a presentation of the "2221" subfactor planar algebra consisting of generators and relations. As a corollary, we have a planar algebra proof of the existence of a subfactor with principal graph "2221". To show the subfactor property, we use the jellyfish algorithm for evaluating closed diagrams. Lastly, we show uniqueness up to conjugation of "2221".
We consider inclusions of type $(P\otimes A)^G\subset(P\otimes B)^G$, where $G$ is a compact quantum group of Kac type acting on a ${\rm II}_1$ factor $P$, and on a Markov inclusion of finite dimensional $C^*$-algebras $A\subset B$. In the case $[A,B]=0$, which basically covers all known examples, we show that the planar algebra of such a subfactor is of the form $P(A\subset B)^G$, with $G$ acting in some natural sense on the bipartite graph algebra $P(A\subset B)$.
In this note, we discuss the notion of symmetric self-duality of shaded planar algebras, which allows us to lift shadings on subfactor planar algebras to obtain Z/2Z-graded unitary fusion categories. This finishes the proof that there are unitary fusion categories with fusion graphs 4442 and 3333.
In this paper, we explicitly work out the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset Q)}$ for an intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ of an irreducible subfactor $N \subset M$ of finite index. We do this in terms of the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset M)}$ by showing that if $T$ is any planar tangle, the associated operator $Z^{(N \subset Q)}_T$ can be read off from $Z^{(N \subset M)}_T$ by a formula involving the so-called {\em biprojection} corresponding to the intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ and a scalar $α(T)$ carefully chosen so as to ensure that the formula …
We give the classification of subfactor planar algebras at index exactly 5. All the examples arise as standard invariants of subgroup subfactors. Some of the requisite uniqueness results come from work of Izumi in preparation. The non-existence results build upon the classification of subfactor planar algebras with index less than 5, with some additional analysis of special cases.
Given a planar algebra we show the equivalence of the notions of a module over this algebra (in the operadic sense), and module over a universal annular algebra. We classify such modules, with invariant inner products, in the generic region and give applications to subfactorss, including a planar construction of the $E_6$ and $E_8$ subfactors.
We show that the restriction functor from oriented factor planar algebras to subfactor planar algebras admits a left adjoint, which we call the free oriented extension functor. We show that for any subfactor planar algebra realized as the standard invariant of a hyperfinite $\rm{II}_1$ subfactor, the projection category of the free oriented extension admits a realization as bimodules of the hyperfinite $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor.
Subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor with ''exotic'' properties can be constructed from nondegenerate commuting squares of multi-matrix algebras. We show that the subfactor planar algebra of these commuting square subfactors necessarily embeds into Jones' graph planar algebra associated to one of the inclusion graphs in the commuting square. This leads to a powerful obstruction for the standard invariant of the subfactor, and we use it to give an example of a hyperfinite subfactor with Temperley-Lieb-Jones standard invariant and index $\frac{5+\sqrt{13}}{2}$, i.e. the index of the Haage…
The main purpose of this paper is to classify exchange relation planar algebras with 4 dimensional 2-boxes. Besides its skein theory, we emphasize the positivity of subfactor planar algebras based on the Schur product theorem. We will discuss the lattice of projections of 2-boxes, specifically the rank of the projections. From this point, several results about biprojections are obtained. The key break of the classification is to show the existence of a biprojection. By this method, we also classify another two families of subfactor planar algebras, subfactor planar algebras generated by 2-boxe…
We construct a new subfactor planar algebra, and as a corollary a new subfactor, with the `extended Haagerup' principal graph pair. This completes the classification of irreducible amenable subfactors with index in the range $(4,3+\sqrt{3})$, which was initiated by Haagerup in 1993. We prove that the subfactor planar algebra with these principal graphs is unique. We give a skein theoretic description, and a description as a subalgebra generated by a certain element in the graph planar algebra of its principal graph. In the skein theoretic description there is an explicit algorithm for evaluati…
We define generalised notions of biunitary elements in planar algebras and show that objects arising in quantum information theory such as Hadamard matrices, quantum latin squares and unitary error bases are all given by biunitary elements in the spin planar algebra. We show that there are natural subfactor planar algebras associated with biunitary elements.
We give a diagrammatic description of Popa's symmetric enveloping algebras associated to planar algebra subfactors. As an application we construct a natural family of derivations on these factors, and compute a certain free entropy dimension type quantity.
We describe the subfactor planar algebra of an intermediate subfactor $N\subset Q \subset M$ of an extremal subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite Jones index which is not necessarily irreducible.
We develop an analog of Jones' planar calculus for II_1-factor bimodules with arbitrary left and right von Neumann dimension. We generalize to bimodules Burns' results on rotations and extremality for infinite index subfactors. These results are obtained without Jones' basic construction and the resulting Jones projections.
An inclusion of II$_1$ factors $N \subset M$ with finite Jones index gives rise to a powerful set of invariants that can be approached successfully in a number of different ways. We describe Jones' pictorial description of the standard invariant of a subfactor as a so-called planar algebra and show how this point of view leads to new structure results for subfactors.
There is a natural construction which associates to a finitely generated, countable, discrete group $G$ and a 3-cocycle $ω$ of $G$ an inclusion of II$_1$ factors, the so-called diagonal subfactors (with cocycle). In the case when the cocycle is trivial these subfactors are well studied and their standard invariant (or planar algebra) is known. We give a description of the planar algebra of these subfactors when a cocycle is present. The action of Jones' planar operad involves the 3-cocycle $ω$ explicitly and some interesting identities for 3-cocycles appear when naturality of the action is ver…
We present more planar algebraic construction of subfactors than those of Guionet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko-Walker and Kodiyalam-Sunder which start from a subfactor planar algebra and give in a direct way a subfactor of the same standard invariant with the planar algebra. Our construction is based on using the ordinary concepts in planar algebras such as involution, inclusion and conditional expectation mappings as it is
Using a family of graded algebra structures on a planar algebra and a family of traces coming from random matrix theory, we obtain a tower of non-commutative probability spaces, naturally associated to a given planar algebra. The associated von Neumann algebras are II$_{1}$ factors whose inclusions realize the given planar algebra as a system of higher relative commutants. We thus give an alternative proof to a result of Popa that every planar algebra can be realized by a subfactor.
For any abstract subfactor planar algebra $P$, there exists a finite index extremal subfactor $M_0 \subset M_1$ with $P$ as its standard invariant. In this paper, we classify the automorphism group of a bipartite graph planar algebra, and obtain subfactor planar subalgebras by taking fixed points under groups of automorphisms. This construction provides both new examples of subfactors and new descriptions of the planar algebras of previously known examples.
To every subfactor planar algebra was associated a II_1 factor with a canonical abelian subalgebra generated by the cup tangle. Using Popa's approximative orthogonality property, we show that this cup subalgebra is maximal amenable.
In this paper we construct two new fusion categories and many new subfactors related to the exceptional Extended Haagerup subfactor. The Extended Haagerup subfactor has two even parts EH1 and EH2. These fusion categories are mysterious and are the only known fusion categories which appear to be unrelated to finite groups, quantum groups, or Izumi quadratic categories. One key technique which has previously revealed hidden structure in fusion categories is to study all other fusion categories in the Morita equivalence class, and hope that one of the others is easier to understand. In this paper…
Growing out of the initial connections between subfactors and knot theory that gave rise to the Jones polynomial, Jones' axiomatization of the standard invariant of an extremal finite index $II_1$ subfactor as a spherical $C^*$-planar algebra, presented in arXiv:math.QA/9909027, is the most elegant and powerful description available. We make the natural extension of this axiomatization to the case of finite index subfactors of arbitrary type. We also provide the first steps toward a limited planar structure in the infinite index case. The central role of rotations, which provide the main non-t…
This paper introduces the cyclic subfactors, generalizing the cyclic groups as the subfactors generalize the groups, and generalizing the natural numbers as the maximal subfactors generalize the prime numbers. On one hand, a theorem of O. Ore states that a finite group is cyclic if and only if its subgroups lattice is distributive, and on the other hand, every subgroup of a cyclic group is normal. Then, a subfactor planar algebra is called cyclic if all the biprojections are normal and form a distributive lattice. The main result shows in what sense a cyclic subfactor is singly generated, by g…
We construct subfactors where one of the principal graphs is a spoke graph using an algorithm which computes two-strand jellyfish relations. One of the subfactors we construct is a 3^{Z/4} subfactor known to Izumi, which has not previously appeared in the literature. To do so, we provide a systematic treatment of the space of second annular consequences, which is analogous to Jones' treatment of the space of first annular consequences in his quadratic tangles article. This article is the natural followup to two recent articles on spoke subfactor planar algebras and the jellyfish algorithm. Wor…
We prove existence of subfactors of finite depth of the hyperfinite II_1 factor with indices (5+sqrt{13})/2= 4.302... and (5+sqrt{17})/2=4.561.... The existence of the former was announced by the second named author in 1993 and that of the latter has been conjectured since then. These are the only known subfactors with finite depth which do not arise from classical groups, quantum groups or rational conformal field theory.
To a planar algebra P in the sense of Jones we associate a natural non- commutative ring, which can be viewed as the ring of non-commutative polynomials in several indeterminates, invariant under a symmetry encoded by P. We show that this ring carries a natural structure of a non-commutative probability space. Non-commutative laws on this space turn out to describe random matrix ensembles possessing special sym- metries. As application, we give a canonical construction of a subfactor and its symmetric enveloping algebra associated to a given planar algebra P. This talk is based on joint work w…
Given a subfactor planar algebra P, Guionnet, Jones and Shlyakhtenko give a diagrammatic construction of a II_{1} subfactor whose planar algebra is P. They showed if P is finite-depth, then the factors are interpolated free group factors, and they identified the parameters. We prove if P is infinite-depth, then the factors are isomorphic to L(F\infty}$.
Braided subfactors of von Neumann algebras provide a framework for studying two dimensional conformal field theories and their modular invariants. We review this in the context of SU(3) conformal field theories through corresponding SU(3) braided subfactors and various subfactor invariants including spectral measures for the nimrep graphs, A_2-planar algebras and almost Calabi-Yau algebras.
We characterize finite index depth 2 inclusions of type II_1 factors in terms of actions of weak Kac algebras and weak C*-Hopf algebras. If N\subset M \subset M_1 \subset M_2 \subset ... is the Jones tower constructed from such an inclusion N\subset M, then B=M^\prime \cap M_2 has a natural structure of a weak C*-Hopf algebra and there is a minimal action of B on M_1 such that M is the fixed point subalgebra of M_1, and M_2 is isomorphic to the crossed product of M_1 and B. This extends the well-known results for irreducible depth 2 inclusions.
Let $(Γ,μ)$ be a bipartite graph together with a weight on its vertices. Assume that $μ$ is an eigenvector for the adjacency matrix of $Γ$. Let Aut$(Γ, μ)$ be the automorphism group of the bipartite graph $Γ$ that scales the weight $μ$. It is a locally compact totally disconnected group that acts on the bipartite graph planar algebra $P$ associated to $(Γ,μ)$. Consider a subgroup G < Aut$(Γ, μ)$ and the set of fixed points $P^G \subset P$ that we assume to be a subfactor planar algebra. If the closure of G inside Aut$(Γ, μ)$ satisfies an approximation property such as amenability, the Haagerup…
Bisch and Jones proposed the classification of planar algebras by simple generators and relations. In this paper, we study the generating problem for a family of group-subgroup subfactors associated with the Kneser graphs, namely, to determine the generators with minimal size. In particular, we prove that this family of subfactors are generated by $2$-boxes and this provides an affirmative answer to a question of Vaughan Jones. This generator problem is also related to the theory of quantum permutation groups, and the main theorem also provides an infinite family of strongly regular graphs wit…
We construct the quantum s-tuple subfactors for an AFD II_1 subfactor with finite index and depth, for an arbitrary natural number s. This is a generalization of the quantum multiple subfactors by J.Erlijman and H.Wenzl, which generalizes the quantum double construction of a subfactor for the case that the original subfactor gives rise to a braided tensor category. In this paper we give a multiple construction for a subfactor with a weaker condition than braidedness of the bimodule system.
By a construction of Vaughan Jones, the bipartite graph $Γ(A)$ associated with the natural inclusion of $\mathbb C$ inside a finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebra $A$ gives rise to a planar algebra $\mathcal P^{Γ(A)}$. We prove that every subfactor planar subalgebra of $\mathcal P^{Γ(A)}$ is the fixed point planar algebra of a uniquely determined action of a compact quantum group $\mathbb G$ on $A$. We use this result to introduce a conceptual framework for the free wreath product operation on compact quantum groups in the language of planar algebras/standard invariants of subfactors. Our approach …
Given a finite depth subfactor planar algebra $\mathcal{P}$ endowed with the graded $*$-algebra structures $\{Gr_k^+ \mathcal{P}\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ of Guionnet, Jones, and Shlyakhtenko, there is a sequence of canonical traces $Tr_{k,+}$ on $Gr_k^+\mathcal{P}$ induced by the Temperley-Lieb diagrams and a sequence of trace-preserving embeddings into the bounded operators on a Hilbert space. Via these embeddings the $*$-algebras $\{Gr_k^+\mathcal{P}\}_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ generate a tower of non-commutative probability spaces $\{M_{k,+}\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ whose inclusions recover $\mathcal{P}$ as…
Ore proved that a finite group is cyclic if and only if its subgroup lattice is distributive. Now, since every subgroup of a cyclic group is normal, we call a subfactor planar algebra cyclic if all its biprojections are normal and form a distributive lattice. The main result generalizes one side of Ore's theorem and shows that a cyclic subfactor is singly generated in the sense that there is a minimal 2-box projection generating the identity biprojection. We conjecture that this result holds without assuming the biprojections to be normal, and we show that it is true for small lattices. We fin…
We give generators and relations for the planar algebras corresponding to $ADE$ subfactors. We also give a basis and an algorithm to express an arbitrary diagram as a linear combination of these basis diagrams.
Jones and Penneys showed that a finite depth subfactor planar algebra embeds in the bipartite graph planar algebra of its principal graph, via a Markov towers of algebras approach. We relate several equivalent perspectives on the notion of module over a subfactor planar algebra, and show that a Markov tower is equivalent to a module over the Temperley-Lieb-Jones planar algebra. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of semisimple pivotal C* modules over Temperley-Lieb-Jones in terms of pointed graphs with a Frobenius-Perron vertex weighting. We then generalize the Markov towers of algebras…
We introduce a notion of planar algebra, the simplest example of which is a vector space of tensors, closed under planar contractions. A planar algebra with suitable positivity properties produces a finite index subfactor of a II_1 factor, and vice versa.
Let $M_0 \subset M_1$ be a finite-index infinite-depth hyperfinite $II_1$ subfactor and $ω$ a free ultrafilter of the natural numbers. We show that if this subfactor is constructed from a commuting square then the central sequence inclusion $M_0^ω \cap M_1' \subset (M_0)_ω$ has infinite Pimnser-Popa index. We will also demonstrate this result for certain infinite-depth hyperfinite subfactors coming from groups.
We extend the Euler's totient function (from arithmetic) to any irreducible subfactor planar algebra, using the Mobius function of its biprojection lattice, as Hall did for the finite groups. We prove that if it is nonzero then there is a minimal 2-box projection generating the identity biprojection. We explain a relation with a problem of K.S. Brown. As an application, we define the dual Euler totient of a finite group and we show that if it is nonzero then the group admits a faithful irreducible complex representation. We also get an analogous result at depth 2, involving the central biproje…
We show that if the principal graph of a subfactor planar algebra of modulus δ>2 is stable for two depths, then it must end in A_{finite} tails. This result is analogous to Popa's theorem on principal graph stability. We use these theorems to show that an (n-1) supertransitive subfactor planar algebra has jellyfish generators at depth n if and only if its principal graph is a spoke graph.
First, we construct the Jones tower and tunnel of the central sequence subfactor arising from a hyperfinite type II_1 subfactor with finite index and finite depth, and prove each algebra has the double commutant property in the ultraproduct of the enveloping II_1 factor. Next, we show the equivalence between Popa's strong amenability and the double commutant property of the central sequence factor for subfactors as above without assuming the finite depth condition.
