We introduce a notion of planar algebra, the simplest example of which is a vector space of tensors, closed under planar contractions. A planar algebra with suitable positivity properties produces a finite index subfactor of a II_1 factor, and vice versa.
From a planar algebra, we give a functorial construction to produce numerous associated $C^*$-algebras. Our main construction is a Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule with a canonical real subspace which produces Pimsner-Toeplitz, Cuntz-Pimsner, and generalized free semicircular $C^*$-algebras. By compressing this system, we obtain various canonical $C^*$-algebras, including Doplicher-Roberts algebras, Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko algebras, universal (Toeplitz-)Cuntz-Krieger algebras, and the newly introduced free graph algebras. This is the first article in a series studying canonical $C^*$-algebras associ…
We define a canonical relative commutant planar algebra from a strongly Markov inclusion of finite von Neumann algebras. In the case of a connected unital inclusion of finite dimensional C*-algebras with the Markov trace, we show this planar algebra is isomorphic to the bipartite graph planar algebra of the Bratteli diagram of the inclusion. Finally, we show that a finite depth subfactor planar algebra is a planar subalgebra of the bipartite graph planar algebra of its principal graph.
We state a conjecture for the formulas of the depth 4 low-weight rotational eigenvectors and their corresponding eigenvalues for the $3^G$ subfactor planar algebras. We prove the conjecture in the case when $|G|$ is odd. To do so, we find an action of $G$ on the reduced subfactor planar algebra at $f^{(2)}$, which is obtained from shading the planar algebra of the even half. We also show that this reduced subfactor planar algebra is a Yang-Baxter planar algebra.
We describe an explicit finite presentation for a finite depth subfactor planar algebra. We also show that such planar algebras are singly generated with the generator subject to finitely many relations.
In this paper, we construct the "2221" subfactor planar algebra by finding it as a subalgebra of the graph planar algebra of its principal graph. In particular, we give a presentation of the "2221" subfactor planar algebra consisting of generators and relations. As a corollary, we have a planar algebra proof of the existence of a subfactor with principal graph "2221". To show the subfactor property, we use the jellyfish algorithm for evaluating closed diagrams. Lastly, we show uniqueness up to conjugation of "2221".
Most known examples of subfactors occur in families, coming from algebraic objects such as groups, quantum groups and rational conformal field theories. The Haagerup subfactor is the smallest index finite-depth subfactor which does not occur in one of these families. In this paper we construct the planar algebra associated to the Haagerup subfactor, which provides a new proof of the existence of the Haagerup subfactor. Our technique is to find the Haagerup planar algebra as a singly generated subfactor planar algebra, contained inside of a graph planar algebra.
In recent joint work with V. Jones and D. Shlyakhtenko, we have given a diagrammatic description of Popa's symmetric enveloping inclusion for planar algebra subfactors. In this paper we give a diagrammatic construction of the associated Jones tower, in the case that the planar algebra is finite-depth. We then use this construction to describe the planar algebra of the symmetric enveloping inclusion, which is known to be isomorphic to the planar algebra of Ocneanu's asymptotic inclusion by a result of Popa. As an application we give a planar algebraic computation of the (reduced) fusion algebra…
We recapture Kuperberg's numerical invariant of 3-manifolds associated to a semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra through a `planar algebra construction'. A result of possibly independent interest, used during the proof, which relates duality in planar graphs and Hopf algebras, is the subject of a final section.
We study the $C^*$-algebras arising in the construction of Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko (GJS) for a planar algebra. In particular, we show they are pairwise strongly Morita equivalent, we compute their $K$-groups, and we prove many properties, such as simplicity, unique trace, and stable rank 1. Interestingly, we see a $K$-theoretic obstruction to the GJS $C^*$-algebra analog of Goldman-type theorems for II$_1$-subfactors. This is the second article in a series studying canonical $C^*$-algebras associated to a planar algebra.
Bisch and Jones suggested the skein theoretic classification of planar algebras and investigated the ones generated by 2-boxes with the second author. In this paper, we consider 3-box generators and classify subfactor planar algebras generated by a non-trivial 3-box satisfying a relation proposed by Thurston. The subfactor planar algebras in the classification are either $E^6$ or the ones from representations of quantum $SU(N)$. We introduce a new method to determine positivity of planar algebras and new techniques to reduce the complexity of computations.
We define Jones's planar algebra as a map of multicategories and constuct a planar algebra starting from a 1-cell in a pivotal strict 2-category. We prove finiteness results for the affine representations of finite depth planar algebras. We also show that the radius of convergence of the dimension of an affine representation of the planar algebra associated to a finite depth subfactor is at least as big as the inverse-square of the modulus.
We give generators and relations for the planar algebras corresponding to $ADE$ subfactors. We also give a basis and an algorithm to express an arbitrary diagram as a linear combination of these basis diagrams.
The main purpose of this paper is to classify exchange relation planar algebras with 4 dimensional 2-boxes. Besides its skein theory, we emphasize the positivity of subfactor planar algebras based on the Schur product theorem. We will discuss the lattice of projections of 2-boxes, specifically the rank of the projections. From this point, several results about biprojections are obtained. The key break of the classification is to show the existence of a biprojection. By this method, we also classify another two families of subfactor planar algebras, subfactor planar algebras generated by 2-boxe…
The first two authors classified subfactor planar algebra generated by a non-trivial 2-box subject to the condition that the dimension of 3-boxes is at most 12 in Part I; 13 in Part II of this series. They are the group planar algebra for $\mathbb{Z}_3$, the Fuss-Catalan planar algebra ; and the group/subgroup planar algebra for $\mathbb{Z}_2\subset \mathbb{Z}_5\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$. In the present paper, we extend the classification to 14 dimensional 3-boxes. They are all BMW. Precisely it contains a depth 3 one from quantum $SO(3)$, and a one-parameter family from quantum $Sp(4)$.
We give a combinatorial description of the ``$D_{2n}$ planar algebra,'' by generators and relations. We explain how the generator interacts with the Temperley-Lieb braiding. This shows the previously known braiding on the even part extends to a `braiding up to sign' on the entire planar algebra. We give a direct proof that our relations are consistent (using this `braiding up to sign'), give a complete description of the associated tensor category and principal graph, and show that the planar algebra is positive definite. These facts allow us to identify our combinatorial construction with the…
We construct a new subfactor planar algebra, and as a corollary a new subfactor, with the `extended Haagerup' principal graph pair. This completes the classification of irreducible amenable subfactors with index in the range $(4,3+\sqrt{3})$, which was initiated by Haagerup in 1993. We prove that the subfactor planar algebra with these principal graphs is unique. We give a skein theoretic description, and a description as a subalgebra generated by a certain element in the graph planar algebra of its principal graph. In the skein theoretic description there is an explicit algorithm for evaluati…
If $G$ is a countable, discrete group generated by two finite subgroups $H$ and $K$ and $P$ is a II$_1$ factor with an outer G-action, one can construct the group-type subfactor $P^H \subset P \rtimes K$ introduced in \cite{BH}. This construction was used in \cite{BH} to obtain numerous examples of infinite depth subfactors whose standard invariant has exotic growth properties. We compute the planar algebra (in the sense of Jones \cite{J2}) of this subfactor and prove that any subfactor with an abstract planar algebra of "group type" arises from such a subfactor. The action of Jones' planar op…
We consider inclusions of type $(P\otimes A)^G\subset(P\otimes B)^G$, where $G$ is a compact quantum group of Kac type acting on a ${\rm II}_1$ factor $P$, and on a Markov inclusion of finite dimensional $C^*$-algebras $A\subset B$. In the case $[A,B]=0$, which basically covers all known examples, we show that the planar algebra of such a subfactor is of the form $P(A\subset B)^G$, with $G$ acting in some natural sense on the bipartite graph algebra $P(A\subset B)$.
In this paper, we explicitly work out the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset Q)}$ for an intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ of an irreducible subfactor $N \subset M$ of finite index. We do this in terms of the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset M)}$ by showing that if $T$ is any planar tangle, the associated operator $Z^{(N \subset Q)}_T$ can be read off from $Z^{(N \subset M)}_T$ by a formula involving the so-called {\em biprojection} corresponding to the intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ and a scalar $α(T)$ carefully chosen so as to ensure that the formula …
We find a new obstruction to the principal graphs of subfactors. It shows that in a certain family of 3-supertransitive principal graphs, there must be a cycle by depth 6, with one exception, the principal graph of the Haagerup subfactor.
In this note, we discuss the notion of symmetric self-duality of shaded planar algebras, which allows us to lift shadings on subfactor planar algebras to obtain Z/2Z-graded unitary fusion categories. This finishes the proof that there are unitary fusion categories with fusion graphs 4442 and 3333.
We describe the subfactor planar algebra of an intermediate subfactor $N\subset Q \subset M$ of an extremal subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite Jones index which is not necessarily irreducible.
In this paper, we classify all spin models for singly-generated Yang-Baxter planar algebras in terms of certain highly regular graphs. Using Liu's classification of singly generated Yang-Baxter planar algebras, this classifies all spin models for the Jones polynomial, the Bisch-Jones planar algebras, and the Kauffman polynomial. This simplifies and clarifies Jaeger's classification of spin models for the Kauffman polynomial. In particular, we completely avoid the opaque and computationally-taxing concept of "formal self-duality"; we also explain the numerous exceptional cases in Jaeger's class…
We produce an explicit embedding of the planar algebra of the Drinfeld double of a finite-dimensional, semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra $H$ into the two-cabling of the planar algebra of the dual Hopf algebra $H^*$ and characterise the image.
To a semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field, we associate a planar algebra defined by generators and relations and show that it is a connected, irreducible, spherical, non-degenerate planar algebra with non-zero modulus and of depth two. This association is shown to yield a bijection between (the isomorphism classes, on both sides, of) such objects.
Generalizing Jones's notion of a planar algebra, we have previously introduced an A_2-planar algebra capturing the structure contained in the double complex pertaining to the subfactor for a finite SU(3) ADE graph with a flat cell system. We now introduce the notion of modules over an A_2-planar algebra, and describe certain irreducible Hilbert A_2-TL-modules. We construct an A_2-graph planar algebra associated to each pair (G,W) given by an SU(3) ADE graph G and a cell system W on G. A partial modular decomposition of these A_2-graph planar algebras is achieved.
We show that the restriction functor from oriented factor planar algebras to subfactor planar algebras admits a left adjoint, which we call the free oriented extension functor. We show that for any subfactor planar algebra realized as the standard invariant of a hyperfinite $\rm{II}_1$ subfactor, the projection category of the free oriented extension admits a realization as bimodules of the hyperfinite $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor.
Jones and Penneys showed that a finite depth subfactor planar algebra embeds in the bipartite graph planar algebra of its principal graph, via a Markov towers of algebras approach. We relate several equivalent perspectives on the notion of module over a subfactor planar algebra, and show that a Markov tower is equivalent to a module over the Temperley-Lieb-Jones planar algebra. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of semisimple pivotal C* modules over Temperley-Lieb-Jones in terms of pointed graphs with a Frobenius-Perron vertex weighting. We then generalize the Markov towers of algebras…
We give a new type of Schur-Weyl duality for the representations of a family of quantum subgroups and their centralizer algebra. We define and classify singly-generated, Yang-Baxter relation planar algebras. We present the skein theoretic construction of a new parameterized planar algebra. We construct infinitely many new subfactors and unitary fusion categories, and compute their trace formula as a closed-form expression, in terms of Young diagrams.
We describe the generators and prove a number of relations for the construction of a planar algebra from the restricted quantum group $\bar{U}_{q}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2})$. This is a diagrammatic description of $End_{\bar{U}_{q}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2})}(X^{\otimes n})$, where $X:=\mathcal{X}^{+}_{2}$ is a two dimensional $\bar{U}_{q}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2})$ module.
In planar algebras, we show how to project certain simple "quadratic" tangles onto the linear space spanned by "linear" and "constant" tangles. We obtain some corollaries about the principal graphs and annular structure of subfactors.
In this paper we describe the Hopf algebras on planar binary trees used to renormalize the Feynman propagators of quantum electrodynamics, and the coaction which describes the renormalization procedure. Both structures are related to some semi-direct coproduct of Hopf algebras.
The Jones-Wenzl idempotents are elements of the Temperley-Lieb planar algebra that are important, but complicated to write down. We will present a new planar algebra, the pop-switch planar algebra, which contains the Temperley-Lieb planar algebra. It is motivated by Jones' idea of the graph planar algebra of type $A_n$. In the tensor category of idempotents of the pop-switch planar algebra, the $n$th Jones-Wenzl idempotent is isomorphic to a direct sum of $n+1$ diagrams consisting of only vertical strands.
We give a diagrammatic presentation of the A_2-Temperley-Lieb algebra. Generalizing Jones' notion of a planar algebra, we formulate an A_2-planar algebra motivated by Kuperberg's A_2-spider. This A_2-planar algebra contains a subfamily of vector spaces which will capture the double complex structure pertaining to the subfactor for a finite SU(3) ADE graph with a flat cell system, including both the periodicity three coming from the A_2-Temperley-Lieb algebra as well as the periodicity two coming from the subfactor basic construction. We use an A_2-planar algebra to obtain a description of the …
We define a planar para algebra, which arises naturally from combining planar algebras with the idea of $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ para symmetry in physics. A subfactor planar para algebra is a Hilbert space representation of planar tangles with parafermionic defects, that are invariant under para isotopy. For each $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$, we construct a family of subfactor planar para algebras which play the role of Temperley-Lieb-Jones planar algebras. The first example in this family is the parafermion planar para algebra (PAPPA). Based on this example, we introduce parafermion Pauli matrices, quaternion re…
Whenever a given Poisson manifold is equipped with discrete symmetries the corresponding algebra of invariant functions or the algebra of functions twisted by the symmetry group can have new deformations, which are not captured by Kontsevich Formality. We consider the simplest example of this situation: $\mathbb{R}^2$ with the reflection symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_2$. The usual quantization leads to the Weyl algebra. While Weyl algebra is rigid, the algebra of even or twisted by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ functions has one more deformation, which was identified by Wigner and is related to Feigin's $gl_λ$ and to…
Let $(Γ,μ)$ be a bipartite graph together with a weight on its vertices. Assume that $μ$ is an eigenvector for the adjacency matrix of $Γ$. Let Aut$(Γ, μ)$ be the automorphism group of the bipartite graph $Γ$ that scales the weight $μ$. It is a locally compact totally disconnected group that acts on the bipartite graph planar algebra $P$ associated to $(Γ,μ)$. Consider a subgroup G < Aut$(Γ, μ)$ and the set of fixed points $P^G \subset P$ that we assume to be a subfactor planar algebra. If the closure of G inside Aut$(Γ, μ)$ satisfies an approximation property such as amenability, the Haagerup…
Given a subfactor planar algebra P and a Hilbert P-module of lowest weight 0 we build a bimodule over the symmetric enveloping inclusion associated to P. As an application we prove diagrammatically that the Temperley-Lieb-Jones standard invariants have the Haagerup property. This provides a new proof of a result due to Popa and Vaes.
We generalize Jones' planar algebras by internalising the notion to a pivotal braided tensor category $\mathcal{C}$. To formulate the notion, the planar tangles are now equipped with additional `anchor lines' which connect the inner circles to the outer circle. We call the resulting notion an anchored planar algebra. If we restrict to the case when $\mathcal{C}$ is the category of vector spaces, then we recover the usual notion of a planar algebra. Building on our previous work on categorified traces, we prove that there is an equivalence of categories between anchored planar algebras in $\mat…
Let $A$ be an associative algebra with identity and with trace. We study the family of planar algebras on 1-boxes that arise from $A$ in the work of Jones, but with the added assumption that the labels on the 1-boxes come from a discrete hypergroup in the sense of Sunder. This construction equips the algebra $P_n^A$ with a canonical basis, $\BB_n^A$, which turns out to be a ``tabular'' basis. We examine special cases of this construction to exhibit a close connection between such bases and Kazhdan--Lusztig bases of Hecke algebras of types $A$, $B$, $H$ or $I$.
This paper introduces the braidings of dendriform algebras and tridendriform algebras. By studying free braided dendriform algebras, we obtain braidings of the Hopf algebras of Loday and Ronco of planar binary rooted trees. We also give a variation of the braiding of Foissy for the noncommutative Connes-Kreimer (a.k.a the Foissy-Holtkamp) Hopf algebra of planar rooted forests so that the well-known isomorphism between this Hopf algebra and the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra is extended to the braided context. As free braided tridendriform algebras, we also give braided extension of the Hopf algebra …
In this note we show that abstract planar algebras are algebras over the topological operad of moduli spaces of stable maps with Lagrangian boundary conditions, which in the case of the projective line are described in terms of real rational functions. These moduli spaces appear naturally in the formulation of open string theory on the projective line. We also show two geometric ways to obtain planar algebras from real algebraic geometry, one based on string topology and one on Gromov-Witten theory. In particular, through the well known relation between planar algebras and subfactors, these re…
In "Hopf algebra of the planar binary trees", Adv. Math. 139 (1998), no. 2, 293--309, we constructed by induction a graded associative product on the vector space generated by the planar binary trees (resp. the permutations). In the present paper we prove an explicit formula for this product in terms of a partial order on the set of planar binary trees (resp. the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric groups).
We study actions of ``compact quantum groups'' on ``finite quantum spaces''. According to Woronowicz and to general $\c^*$-algebra philosophy these correspond to certain coactions $v:A\to A\otimes H$. Here $A$ is a finite dimensional $\c^*$-algebra, and $H$ is a certain special type of Hopf *-algebra. If $v$ preserves a positive linear form $ϕ:A\to\c$, a version of Jones' ``basic construction'' applies. This produces a certain $\c^*$-algebra structure on $A^{\otimes n}$, plus a coaction $v_n :A^{\otimes n}\to A^{\otimes n}\otimes H$, for every $n$. The elements $x$ satisfying $v_n(x)=x\otimes …
Motivated by the Moore-Segal axioms for an open-closed topological field theory, we consider planar open string topological field theories. We rigorously define a category 2Thick whose objects and morphisms can be thought of as open strings and diffeomorphism classes of planar open string worldsheets. Just as the category of 2-dimensional cobordisms can be described as the free symmetric monoidal category on a commutative Frobenius algebra, 2Thick is shown to be the free monoidal category on a noncommutative Frobenius algebra, hence justifying this choice of data in the Moore-Segal axioms. Our…
We find automorphic corrections for the Lorentzian Kac--Moody algebras with the simplest generalized Cartan matrices of rank 3: A_{1,0} = 2 0 -1 0 2 -2 -1 -2 2 and A_{1,I} = 2 -2 -1 -2 2 -1 -1 -1 2 For A_{1,0} this correction is given by the Igusa Sp_4(Z)-modular form χ_{35} of weight 35, and for A_{1,I} by a Siege modular form of weight 30 with respect to a 2-congruence subgroup. We find infinite product or sum expansions for these forms. Our method of construction of χ_{35} leads to the direct construction of Siegel modular forms by infinite product expansions, whose divisors are the Humbert…
We represent Feigin's construction [11] of lattice W algebras and give some simple results: lattice Virasoro and $W_3$ algebras. For simplest case $g=sl(2)$ we introduce whole $U_q(sl(2))$ quantum group on this lattice. We find simplest two-dimensional module as well as exchange relations and define lattice Virasoro algebra as algebra of invariants of $U_q(sl(2))$. Another generalization is connected with lattice integrals of motion as the invariants of quantum affine group $U_q(\hat{n}_{+})$. We show that Volkov's scheme leads to the system of difference equations for the function from non-co…
