We define Jones's planar algebra as a map of multicategories and constuct a planar algebra starting from a 1-cell in a pivotal strict 2-category. We prove finiteness results for the affine representations of finite depth planar algebras. We also show that the radius of convergence of the dimension of an affine representation of the planar algebra associated to a finite depth subfactor is at least as big as the inverse-square of the modulus.
We give a combinatorial description of the ``$D_{2n}$ planar algebra,'' by generators and relations. We explain how the generator interacts with the Temperley-Lieb braiding. This shows the previously known braiding on the even part extends to a `braiding up to sign' on the entire planar algebra. We give a direct proof that our relations are consistent (using this `braiding up to sign'), give a complete description of the associated tensor category and principal graph, and show that the planar algebra is positive definite. These facts allow us to identify our combinatorial construction with the…
We generalize Jones' planar algebras by internalising the notion to a pivotal braided tensor category $\mathcal{C}$. To formulate the notion, the planar tangles are now equipped with additional `anchor lines' which connect the inner circles to the outer circle. We call the resulting notion an anchored planar algebra. If we restrict to the case when $\mathcal{C}$ is the category of vector spaces, then we recover the usual notion of a planar algebra. Building on our previous work on categorified traces, we prove that there is an equivalence of categories between anchored planar algebras in $\mat…
We show that the restriction functor from oriented factor planar algebras to subfactor planar algebras admits a left adjoint, which we call the free oriented extension functor. We show that for any subfactor planar algebra realized as the standard invariant of a hyperfinite $\rm{II}_1$ subfactor, the projection category of the free oriented extension admits a realization as bimodules of the hyperfinite $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor.
Given a II$_1$-subfactor $A\subset B$ of arbitrary index, we show that the rectangular GICAR category, also called the rectangular planar rook category, faithfully embeds as $A-A$ bimodule maps among the bimodules $\bigotimes_A^n L^2(B)$. As a corollary, we get a lower bound on the dimension of the centralizer algebras $A_0'\cap A_{2n}$ for infinite index subfactors, and we also get that $A_0'\cap A_{2n}$ is nonabelian for $n\geq 2$, where $(A_n)_{n\geq 0}$ is the Jones tower for $A_0=A\subset B=A_1$. We also show that the annular GICAR/planar rook category acts as maps amongst the $A$-central…
The Jones-Wenzl idempotents are elements of the Temperley-Lieb planar algebra that are important, but complicated to write down. We will present a new planar algebra, the pop-switch planar algebra, which contains the Temperley-Lieb planar algebra. It is motivated by Jones' idea of the graph planar algebra of type $A_n$. In the tensor category of idempotents of the pop-switch planar algebra, the $n$th Jones-Wenzl idempotent is isomorphic to a direct sum of $n+1$ diagrams consisting of only vertical strands.
Circuit algebras, introduced by Bar-Natan and the first author, are a generalization of Jones's planar algebras, in which one drops the planarity condition on "connection diagrams". They provide a useful language for the study of virtual and welded tangles in low-dimensional topology. In this note, we present the circuit algebra analogue of the well-known classification of planar algebras as pivotal categories with a self-dual generator. Our main theorem is that there is an equivalence of categories between circuit algebras and the category of linear wheeled props - a type of strict symmetric …
We construct a new subfactor planar algebra, and as a corollary a new subfactor, with the `extended Haagerup' principal graph pair. This completes the classification of irreducible amenable subfactors with index in the range $(4,3+\sqrt{3})$, which was initiated by Haagerup in 1993. We prove that the subfactor planar algebra with these principal graphs is unique. We give a skein theoretic description, and a description as a subalgebra generated by a certain element in the graph planar algebra of its principal graph. In the skein theoretic description there is an explicit algorithm for evaluati…
Bisch and Jones suggested the skein theoretic classification of planar algebras and investigated the ones generated by 2-boxes with the second author. In this paper, we consider 3-box generators and classify subfactor planar algebras generated by a non-trivial 3-box satisfying a relation proposed by Thurston. The subfactor planar algebras in the classification are either $E^6$ or the ones from representations of quantum $SU(N)$. We introduce a new method to determine positivity of planar algebras and new techniques to reduce the complexity of computations.
The category-valued trace assigns to a bimodule category over a linear monoidal category a linear category. It generalizes Drinfeld centers of monoidal categories and the relative Deligne product of bimodule categories. In this article, we study bimodule categories that are given as categories of bicomodules over a Hopf algebra. Our main result is a representation-theoretic realization of the category-valued trace as a category of generalized Hopf bimodules.

In order to apply quantum topology methods to nonplanar graphs, we define a planar diagram category that describes the local topology of embeddings of graphs into surfaces. These \emph{virtual graphs} are a categorical interpretation of ribbon graphs. We describe an extension of the flow polynomial to virtual graphs, the $S$-polynomial, and formulate the $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ Penrose polynomial for non-cubic graphs, giving contraction-deletion relations. The $S$-polynomial is used to define an extension of the Yamada polynomial to virtual spatial graphs, and with it we obtain a sufficient conditi…
We classify which dual functors on a unitary multitensor category are compatible with the dagger structure in terms of groupoid homomorphisms from the universal grading groupoid to $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ where the latter is considered as a groupoid with one object. We then prove that all unitary dual functors induce unitarily equivalent bi-involutive structures. As an application, we provide the unitary version of the folklore correspondence between shaded planar ${\rm C^*}$ algebras with finite dimensional box spaces and unitary multitensor categories with a chosen unitary dual functor and chosen …
We give a new type of Schur-Weyl duality for the representations of a family of quantum subgroups and their centralizer algebra. We define and classify singly-generated, Yang-Baxter relation planar algebras. We present the skein theoretic construction of a new parameterized planar algebra. We construct infinitely many new subfactors and unitary fusion categories, and compute their trace formula as a closed-form expression, in terms of Young diagrams.
Let $U_q'(\mathfrak{g})$ be a quantum affine algebra of untwisted affine ADE type and let $\mathcal{C}^0_{\mathfrak{g}}$ be Hernandez-Leclerc's category. For a duality datum $\mathcal{D}$ in $\mathcal{C}^0_{\mathfrak{g}}$, we denote by $\mathcal{F}_{\mathcal{D}}$ the quantum affine Weyl-Schur duality functor. We give sufficient conditions for a duality datum $\mathcal{D}$ to provide the functor $\mathcal{F}_{\mathcal{D}}$ sending simple modules to simple modules. Then we introduce the notion of cuspidal modules in $\mathcal{C}^0_{\mathfrak{g}}$, and show that all simple modules in $\mathcal{C}…
We introduce two new classes of fusion categories which are obtained by a certain procedure from finite groups - weakly group-theoretical categories and solvable categories. These are fusion categories that are Morita equivalent to iterated extensions (in the world of fusion categories) of arbitrary, respectively solvable finite groups. Weakly group-theoretical categories have integer dimension, and all known fusion categories of integer dimension are weakly group theoretical. Our main results are that a weakly group-theoretical category C has the strong Frobenius property (i.e., the dimension…
Group-theoretical fusion categories are defined by data concerning finite groups and their cohomology: A finite group $G$ endowed with a three-cocycle $ω$, and a subgroup $H\subset G$ endowed with a two-cochain whose coboundary is the restriction of $ω$. The objects of the category are $G$-graded vector spaces with suitably twisted $H$-actions; the associativity of tensor products is controlled by $ω$. Simple objects are parametrized in terms of projective representations of finite groups, namely of the stabilizers in $H$ of right $H$-cosets in $G$, with respect to two-cocycles defined by the …
We describe all fusion subcategories of the representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group. In view of the fact that every group-theoretical braided fusion category can be embedded into a representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group, this gives a complete description of all group-theoretical braided fusion categories. We describe the lattice and give formulas for some invariants of the fusion subcategories of representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group. We also give a characterization of group-theoretical braided fusion …
We associate a monoidal category $\mathcal{H}_B$, defined in terms of planar diagrams, to any graded Frobenius superalgebra $B$. This category acts naturally on modules over the wreath product algebras associated to $B$. To $B$ we also associate a (quantum) lattice Heisenberg algebra $\mathfrak{h}_B$. We show that, provided $B$ is not concentrated in degree zero, the Grothendieck group of $\mathcal{H}_B$ is isomorphic, as an algebra, to $\mathfrak{h}_B$. For specific choices of Frobenius algebra $B$, we recover existing results, including those of Khovanov and Cautis--Licata. We also prove tha…
In the present paper we propose a new approach to quantum fields in terms of category algebras and states on categories. We define quantum fields and their states as category algebras and states on causal categories with partial involution structures. By utilizing category algebras and states on categories instead of simply considering categories, we can directly integrate relativity as a category theoretic structure and quantumness as a noncommutative probabilistic structure. Conceptual relationships with conventional approaches to quantum fields, including Algebraic Quantum Field Theory (AQF…
