We construct numerous continuous families of irreducible subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor, which are non-isomorphic, but have all the same standard invariant. In particular, we obtain 1-parameter families of irreducible, non-isomorphic subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor, which have Jones index 6 and have all the same standard invariant with property (T). We exploit the fact that property (T) groups have uncountably many non-cocycle conjugate cocycle actions on the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor.
We construct irreducible hyperfinite subfactors of index 6 with a prescribed fundamental group from a large family containing all countable and many uncountable subgroups of R_+. We also prove that there are unclassifiably many irreducible hyperfinite group-type subfactors of index 6 that all have the same standard invariant. More precisely, we associate such a subfactor to every ergodic measure preserving automorphism of the interval [0,1] and prove that the resulting subfactors are isomorphic if and only if the automorphisms are conjugate.
Subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor with ''exotic'' properties can be constructed from nondegenerate commuting squares of multi-matrix algebras. We show that the subfactor planar algebra of these commuting square subfactors necessarily embeds into Jones' graph planar algebra associated to one of the inclusion graphs in the commuting square. This leads to a powerful obstruction for the standard invariant of the subfactor, and we use it to give an example of a hyperfinite subfactor with Temperley-Lieb-Jones standard invariant and index $\frac{5+\sqrt{13}}{2}$, i.e. the index of the Haage…
Let $M_0 \subset M_1$ be a finite-index infinite-depth hyperfinite $II_1$ subfactor and $ω$ a free ultrafilter of the natural numbers. We show that if this subfactor is constructed from a commuting square then the central sequence inclusion $M_0^ω \cap M_1' \subset (M_0)_ω$ has infinite Pimnser-Popa index. We will also demonstrate this result for certain infinite-depth hyperfinite subfactors coming from groups.
A hyperfinite $II_1$ subfactor may be obtained from a symmetric commuting square via iteration of the basic construction. For certain commuting squares constructed from Hadamard matrices, we describe this subfactor as a group-type inclusion $R^H \subset R \rtimes K$, where $H$ and $K$ are finite groups with outer actions on the hyperfinite $II_1$ factor $R$. We find the group of outer automorphisms generated by $H$ and $K$, and use the method of Bisch and Haagerup to determine the principal and dual principal graphs. In some cases a complete classification is obtained by examining the element …
To any complex Hadamard matrix H one associates a spin model commuting square, and therefore a hyperfinite subfactor. The standard invariant of this subfactor captures certain "group-like" symmetries of H. To gain some insight, we compute the first few relative commutants of such subfactors for Hadamard matrices of small dimensions. Also, we show that subfactors arising from Dita type matrices have intermediate subfactors, and thus their standard invariants have some extra structure besides the Jones projections.
We use the free entropy defined by D. Voiculescu to prove that the free group factors can not be decomposed as closed linear spans of noncommutative monomials in elements of nonprime subfactors or abelian $*$-subalgebras, if the degrees of monomials have an upper bound depending on the number of generators. The resulting estimates for the hyperfinite and abelian dimensions of free group factors settle in the affirmative a conjecture of L. Ge and S. Popa (for infinitely many generators).
We show that the restriction functor from oriented factor planar algebras to subfactor planar algebras admits a left adjoint, which we call the free oriented extension functor. We show that for any subfactor planar algebra realized as the standard invariant of a hyperfinite $\rm{II}_1$ subfactor, the projection category of the free oriented extension admits a realization as bimodules of the hyperfinite $\rm{II}_{1}$ factor.
For any finite dimensional C*-algebra A with any trace vector {\vec s} whose components are rational numbers, we give an endomorphism Φ of the hyperfinite II_1 factor R such that: forall k in {\mathbb N} Φ^k (R)' \cap R= \otimes^k A The canonical trace τ on R extends the trace vector {\vec s} on A. As a corollary, we construct a one-parameter family of inclusions of hyperfinite II_1 factors N^λ \subset M^λ with trivial relative commutant (N^λ)' \cap M^λ= {\mathbb C} and with the Jones index [M^λ: N^λ]= λ^{-1} \in (4, \infty) \cap {\mathbb Q} This partially solves the problem of finding all pos…
We determine the subfactors $N\subset R$ of the hyperfinite $II_1$-factor R with finite index for which the $C^*$-tensor category of the associated $(N,N)$-bimodules is equivalent to the $C^*$-tensor category $\C{U}_G$ of all unitary finite dimensional representations of a given finite group G.
We examine the notion of $α$-strong singularity for subfactors of a \IIi factor, which is a metric quantity that relates the distance between a unitary in the factor and a subalgebra with the distance between that subalgebra and its unitary conjugate. Through planar algebra techniques, we demonstrate the existence of a finite index singular subfactor of the hyperfinite \IIi factor that cannot be strongly singular with $α=1$, in contrast to the case for masas. Using work of Popa, Sinclair, and Smith, we show that there exists an absolute constant $0<c<1$ such that all singular subfactors are $c…
Let $R$ be the hyperfinite ${\rm II}_1$ factor and let $u,v$ be two generators of $R$ such that $u^*u=v^*v=1$ and $vu=e^{2πiθ} uv$ for an irrational number $θ$. In this paper we study the class of operators $uf(v)$, where $f$ is a bounded Lebesgue measurable function on the unit circle $S^1$. We calculate the spectrum and Brown spectrum of operators $uf(v)$, and study the invariant subspace problem of such operators relative to $R$. We show that under general assumptions the von Neumann algebra generated by $uf(v)$ is an irreducible subfactor of $R$ with index $n$ for some natural number $n$, …
We prove existence of subfactors of finite depth of the hyperfinite II_1 factor with indices (5+sqrt{13})/2= 4.302... and (5+sqrt{17})/2=4.561.... The existence of the former was announced by the second named author in 1993 and that of the latter has been conjectured since then. These are the only known subfactors with finite depth which do not arise from classical groups, quantum groups or rational conformal field theory.
In 1965 Tauer produced a countably infinite family of semi-regular masas in the hyperfinite $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor, no pair of which are conjugate by an automorphism. This was achieved by iterating the process of passing to the algebra generated by the normalisers and, for each $n\in\mathbb N$, finding masas for which this procedure terminates at the $n$-th stage. Such masas are said to have length $n$. In this paper we consider a transfinite version of this idea, giving rise to a notion of ordinal valued length. We show that all countable ordinals arise as lengths of semi-regular masas in the…
Most known examples of subfactors occur in families, coming from algebraic objects such as groups, quantum groups and rational conformal field theories. The Haagerup subfactor is the smallest index finite-depth subfactor which does not occur in one of these families. In this paper we construct the planar algebra associated to the Haagerup subfactor, which provides a new proof of the existence of the Haagerup subfactor. Our technique is to find the Haagerup planar algebra as a singly generated subfactor planar algebra, contained inside of a graph planar algebra.
We prove that finiteness of the index of the intersection of a finite set of finite index subalgebras in a von Neumann algebra (with small centre) is equivalent to the finite dimensionality of the algebra generated by the conditional expectations onto the subalgebras.
In this series of papers we show that there are exactly ten subfactors, other than $A_\infty$ subfactors, of index between 4 and 5. Previously this classification was known up to index $3+\sqrt{3}$. In the first paper we give an analogue of Haagerup's initial classification of subfactors of index less than $3+\sqrt{3}$, showing that any subfactor of index less than 5 must appear in one of a large list of families. These families will be considered separately in the three subsequent papers in this series.
The main result of this paper is that the k^{\rm th} continuous Hochschild cohomology groups H^k(\cl M,\cl M) and H^k(\cl M,B(H)) of a von Neumann factor ${\cl M}\subseteq B(H) of type {\rm II}_1 with property Gamma are zero for all positive integers k. The method of proof involves the construction of hyperfinite subfactors with special properties and a new inequality of Grothendieck type for multilinear maps. We prove joint continuity in the $\|\cdot\|_2$-norm of separately ultraweakly continuous multilinear maps, and combine these results to reduce to the case of completely bounded cohomolog…
Determining which bipartite graphs can be principal graphs of subfactors is an important and difficult question in subfactor theory. Using only planar algebra techniques, we prove a triple point obstruction which generalizes all known initial triple point obstructions to possible principal graphs. We also prove a similar quadruple point obstruction with the same technique. Using our obstructions, we eliminate some infinite families of possible principal graphs with initial triple and quadruple points which were a major hurdle in extending subfactor classification results above index 5.
We give an general estimate for the non-microstates free entropy dimension $δ^{*}(X_{1},..., X_{n})$. If $X_{1},..., X_{n}$ generate a diffuse von Neumann algebra, we prove that $δ^{*}(X_{1},..., X_{n})\geq 1$. In the case that $X_{1},..., X_{n}$ are $q$-semicircular variables as introduced by Bozejko and Speicher and $q^{2}n<1$, we show that $δ^{*}(X_{1},..., X_{n})>1$. We also show that for $|q|<\sqrt{2}-1$, the von Neumann algebras generated by a finite family of $q$-Gaussian random variables satisfy a condition of Ozawa and are therefore solid: the relative commutant of any diffuse subalge…
We investigate $E_0-$semigroups on general factors, which are not necessarily of type I, and analyse associated invariants like product systems, super product systems etc. By tensoring $E_0-$semigroups on type I factors with $E_0-$semigroups on type II$_1$ factor, we produce several families (both countable and uncountable), consisting of mutually non-cocycle-conjugate of $E_0-$semigroups on the hyperfinite II$_\infty$ factor. Using CCR representations associated with quasi-free states, we construct for the first time, uncountable families consisting of mutually non-cocycle-conjugate $E_0-$sem…
We introduce four new cocycle conjugacy invariants for E_0-semigroups on II_1 factors: a coupling index, a dimension for the gauge group, a super product system and a C*-semiflow. Using noncommutative Itô integrals we show that the dimension of the gauge group can be computed from the structure of the additive cocycles. We do this for the Clifford flows and even Clifford flows on the hyperfinite II_1 factor, and for the free flows on the free group factor $L(F_\infty)$. In all cases the index is 0, which implies they have trivial gauge groups. We compute the super product systems for these fam…
