We construct inclusions of the form $(B_0\otimes P)^G\subset (B_1\otimes P)^G$, where $G$ is a compact quantum group of Kac type acting on an inclusion of finite dimensional $\c^*$-algebras $B_0\subset B_1$ and on a $II_1$ factor $P$. Under suitable assumptions on the actions of $G$, this is a subfactor, whose Jones to er and standard invariant can be computed by using techniques of A. Wassermann. The subfactors associated to subgroups of compact groups, to projective representations of compact groups, to finite quantum groups, to finitely generated discrete groups, to vertex models and to spin models are of this form.
We analyse the Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko construction for the planar algebra associated to a finite-dimensional Kac algebra and identify the factors that arise as finite interpolated free group factors.
We consider commuting squares of finite dimensional von Neumann algebras having the algebra of complex numbers in the lower left corner. Examples include the vertex models, the spin models (in the sense of subfactor theory) and the commuting squares associated to finite dimensional Kac algebras. To any such commuting square we associate a compact Kac algebra and we compute the corresponding subfactor and its standard invariant in terms of it.
Given a finite-index and finite-depth subfactor, we define the notion of \textit{quantum double inclusion} - a certain unital inclusion of von Neumann algebras constructed from the given subfactor - which is closely related to that of Ocneanu's asymptotic inclusion. We show that the quantum double inclusion when applied to the Kac algebra subfactor $R^H \subset R$ produces Drinfeld double of $H$ where $H$ is a finite-dimensional Kac algebra acting outerly on the hyperfinite $II_1$ factor $R$ and $R^H$ denotes the fixed-point subalgebra. More precisely, quantum double inclusion of $R^H \subset …
In \cite{Sde2018} we defined the notion of \textit{quantum double inclusion} associated to a finite-index and finite-depth subfactor and studied the quantum double inclusion associated to the Kac algebra subfactor $R^H \subset R$ where $H$ is a finite-dimensional Kac algebra acting outerly on the hyperfinite $II_1$ factor $R$ and $R^H$ denotes the fixed-point subalgebra. In this article we analyse quantum double inclusions associated to the family of Kac algebra subfactors given by $\{ R^H \subset R \rtimes \underbrace{H \rtimes H^* \rtimes \cdots}_{\text{$m$ times}} : m \geq 1 \}$. For each $…
We consider inclusions of type $(P\otimes A)^G\subset(P\otimes B)^G$, where $G$ is a compact quantum group of Kac type acting on a ${\rm II}_1$ factor $P$, and on a Markov inclusion of finite dimensional $C^*$-algebras $A\subset B$. In the case $[A,B]=0$, which basically covers all known examples, we show that the planar algebra of such a subfactor is of the form $P(A\subset B)^G$, with $G$ acting in some natural sense on the bipartite graph algebra $P(A\subset B)$.
We show that indecomposable weak Kac algebras are free over their Cartan subalgebras and prove a duality theorem for their actions. Using this result, for any biconnected weak Kac algebra we construct a minimal action on the hyperfinite II_1 factor. The corresponding crossed product inclusion of II_1 factors has depth 2 and an integer index. Its first relative commutant is, in general, non-trivial, so we derive some arithmetic properties of weak Kac algebras from considering reduced subfactors.
In this paper, we introduce the notation of bi-shift of biprojections in subfactor theory to unimodular Kac algebras. We characterize the minimizers of Hirschman-Beckner uncertainty principle and Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle for unimodular Kac algebras with biprojections and prove Hardy's uncertainty principle in terms of minimizers.
We associate Popa systems (= standard invariants of subfactors) to the finite dimensional representations of compact quantum groups. We characterise the systems arising in this way: these are the ones which can be ``represented'' on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. This is proved by an universal construction. We explicitely compute (in terms of some free products) the operation of going from representations of compact quantum groups to Popa systems and then back via the universal construction. We prove a Kesten type result for the co-amenability of compact quantum groups, which allows us to …
In this paper we discuss a conjecture on intermediate subfactors which is a generalization of Wall's conjecture from the theory of finite groups. We explore special cases of this conjecture and present supporting evidence. In particular we prove special cases of this conjecture related to some finite dimensional Kac Algebras of Izumi-Kosaki type which include relative version of Wall's conjecture for solvable groups.
We characterize finite index depth 2 inclusions of type II_1 factors in terms of actions of weak Kac algebras and weak C*-Hopf algebras. If N\subset M \subset M_1 \subset M_2 \subset ... is the Jones tower constructed from such an inclusion N\subset M, then B=M^\prime \cap M_2 has a natural structure of a weak C*-Hopf algebra and there is a minimal action of B on M_1 such that M is the fixed point subalgebra of M_1, and M_2 is isomorphic to the crossed product of M_1 and B. This extends the well-known results for irreducible depth 2 inclusions.
We give a characterization of extremal irreducible discrete subfactors $(N\subseteq M, E)$ where $N$ is type ${\rm II}_1$ in terms of connected W*-algebra objects in rigid C*-tensor categories. We prove an equivalence of categories where the morphisms for discrete inclusions are normal $N-N$ bilinear ucp maps which preserve the state $τ\circ E$, and the morphisms for W*-algebra objects are categorical ucp morphisms. As an application, we get a well-behaved notion of the standard invariant of an extremal irreducible discrete subfactor, together with a subfactor reconstruction theorem. Thus our …
We calssify actions of discrete abelian groups on some inclusions of von Neumann algebras, up to cocycle conjugacy. As an application, we classify actions of compact abelian groups on the inclusions of AFD factors of type II_1 with index less than 4, up to stable conjugacy.
Conformal inclusions of chiral conformal field theories, or more generally inclusions of quantum field theories, are described in the von Neumann algebraic setting by nets of subfactors, possibly with infinite Jones index if one takes non-rational theories into account. With this situation in mind, we study in a purely subfactor theoretical context a certain class of braided discrete subfactors with an additional commutativity constraint, that we call locality, and which corresponds to the commutation relations between field operators at space-like distance in quantum field theory. Examples of…
We associate a rigid C*-tensor category $C$ to a totally disconnected locally compact group $G$ and a compact open subgroup $K < G$. We characterize when $C$ has the Haagerup property or property (T), and when $C$ is weakly amenable. When $G$ is compactly generated, we prove that $C$ is essentially equivalent to the planar algebra associated by Jones and Burstein to a group acting on a locally finite bipartite graph. We then concretely realize $C$ as the category of bimodules generated by a hyperfinite subfactor.
By a construction of Vaughan Jones, the bipartite graph $Γ(A)$ associated with the natural inclusion of $\mathbb C$ inside a finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebra $A$ gives rise to a planar algebra $\mathcal P^{Γ(A)}$. We prove that every subfactor planar subalgebra of $\mathcal P^{Γ(A)}$ is the fixed point planar algebra of a uniquely determined action of a compact quantum group $\mathbb G$ on $A$. We use this result to introduce a conceptual framework for the free wreath product operation on compact quantum groups in the language of planar algebras/standard invariants of subfactors. Our approach …
We study actions of locally compact groups on von Neumann factors and the associated crossed-product von Neumann algebras. In the setting of totally disconnected groups we provide sufficient conditions on an action $G\curvearrowright Q$ ensuring that the inclusion $Q \subset Q \rtimes G$ is irreducible and that every intermediate subfactor is of the form $Q \rtimes H$ for a closed subgroup $H<G$. This partially generalizes a result of Izumi-Longo-Popa [ILP98] and Choda [Ch78]. We moreover show that one can not hope to use their strategy for non-discrete groups.
We show that given a rigid C*-tensor category, there is an equivalence of categories between normalized irreducible Q-systems, also known as connected unitary Frobenius algebra objects, and compact connected W*-algebra objects. Although this result could be proved as a corollary of our previous article on realizations of algebra objects and discrete subfactors, we prove it here directly via categorical methods without passing through subfactor theory.
Discrete subfactors include a particular class of infinite index subfactors and all finite index ones. A discrete subfactor is called local when it is braided and it fulfills a commutativity condition motivated by the study of inclusion of Quantum Field Theories in the algebraic Haag-Kastler setting. In [BDG21], we proved that every irreducible local discrete subfactor arises as the fixed point subfactor under the action of a canonical compact hypergroup. In this work, we prove a Galois correspondence between intermediate von Neumann algebras and closed subhypergroups, and we study the subfact…
The classical uncertainty principles deal with functions on abelian groups. In this paper, we discuss the uncertainty principles for finite index subfactors which include the cases for finite groups and finite dimensional Kac algebras. We prove the Hausdorff-Young inequality, Young's inequality, the Hirschman-Beckner uncertainty principle, the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle. We characterize the minimizers of the uncertainty principles. We also prove that the minimizer is uniquely determined by the supports of itself and its Fourier transform. The proofs take the advantage of the analytic a…
We classify up to isomorphism all non-Kac compact quantum groups with the same fusion rules and dimension function as $SU(n)$. For this we first prove, using categorical Poisson boundary, the following general result. Let $G$ be a coamenable compact quantum group and $K$ be its maximal quantum subgroup of Kac type. Then any dimension-preserving unitary fiber functor $Rep\ G \to Hilb_f$ factors, uniquely up to isomorphism, through $Rep\ K$. Equivalently, we have a canonical bijection $H^2(\hat G; T) \cong H^2(\hat K; T)$. Next, we classify autoequivalences of the representation categories of tw…
We establish a Galois correspondence for a minimal action of a compact quantum group ${\mathbb G}$ on a von Neumann factor $M$. This extends the result of Izumi, Longo and Popa who treated the case of a Kac algebra. Namely, there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the lattice of left coideals of ${\mathbb G}$ and that of intermediate subfactors of $M^{\mathbb G}\subset M$.
We study the Kac cohomology for matched pairs of locally compact groups. This cohomology theory arises from the extension theory of locally compact quantum groups. We prove a topological version of the Kac exact sequence and provide methods to compute the cohomology. We give explicit calculations in several examples using results of Moore and Wigner.
We establish a correspondence between the levels of Verlinde rings and the depths of subfactors. Given the $l$-level Verlinde ring $R_l(G)$ of a simple compact Lie group $G$, the tensor products of fundamental representations give us the inclusion of a pair of $\text{II}_1$ factors $N\subset M$. For the depth $d$ of $N\subset M$, we first prove $d=l$ for type $A_n,C_n$ and $B_2$. More generally, the depth $d$ is shown to satisfy $β\cdot l\leq d\leq l$ with $β\in (0,1)$, where $β$ is uniquely determined by the simple type of $G$. We also show that the simple $N$-$N$-bimodules contained in $L^2(…
We classify a certain class of minimal actions of a compact Kac algebra with amenable dual on injective factors of type III. Our main technical tools are the structural analysis of type III factors and the theory of canonical extension of endomorphisms introduced by Izumi.
We show the uniqueness of minimal actions of a compact Kac algebra with amenable dual on the AFD factor of type II$_1$. This particularly implies the uniqueness of minimal actions of a compact group. Our main tools are a Rohlin type theorem, the 2-cohomology vanishing theorem, and the Evans-Kishimoto type intertwining argument.
Let $(Γ,μ)$ be a bipartite graph together with a weight on its vertices. Assume that $μ$ is an eigenvector for the adjacency matrix of $Γ$. Let Aut$(Γ, μ)$ be the automorphism group of the bipartite graph $Γ$ that scales the weight $μ$. It is a locally compact totally disconnected group that acts on the bipartite graph planar algebra $P$ associated to $(Γ,μ)$. Consider a subgroup G < Aut$(Γ, μ)$ and the set of fixed points $P^G \subset P$ that we assume to be a subfactor planar algebra. If the closure of G inside Aut$(Γ, μ)$ satisfies an approximation property such as amenability, the Haagerup…
A well-known theorem of Day and Dixmier states that any uniformly bounded representation of an amenable locally compact group $G$ on a Hilbert space is similar to a unitary representation. Within the category of locally compact quantum groups, the conjectural analogue of the Day-Dixmier theorem is that every completely bounded Hilbert space representation of the convolution algebra of an amenable locally compact quantum group should be similar to a $\ast$-representation. We prove that this conjecture is false for a large class of non-Kac type compact quantum groups, including all $q$-deformati…
We establish sharp Sobolev embedding properties within a broad class of compact matrix quantum groups of Kac type under the polynomial growth or the rapid decay property of their duals. Main examples are duals of polynomially growing discrete quantum groups, duals of free groups and free quantum groups $O_N^+,S_N^+$. In addition, we generalize sharpend Hausdorff-Young inequalities, compute degrees of the rapid decay property for $\widehat{O_N^+},\widehat{S_N^+}$ and prove sharpness of Hardy-Littlewood inequalities on duals of free groups.
The Hardy-Littlewood inequality on $\mathbb{T}$ compares the $L^p$-norm of a function with a weighted $\ell^p$-norm of its Fourier coefficients. The approach has recently been studied for compact homogeneous spaces and we study a natural analogue in the framework of compact quantum groups. Especially, in the case of the reduced group $C^*$-algebras and free quantum groups, we establish explicit $L^p-\ell^p$ inequalities through inherent information of underlying quantum group, such as growth rate and rapid decay property. Moreover, we show sharpness of the inequalities in a large class, includ…
Let $M$ be a factor with separable predual and $G$ a compact group of automorphisms of $M$ whose action is minimal, i.e. $M^{G^\prime}\cap M = C$, where $M^G$ denotes the $G$-fixed point subalgebra. Then every intemediate von Neumann algebra $M^G\subset N\subset M$ has the form $N=M^H$ for some closed subgroup $H$ of $G$. An extension of this result to the case of actions of compact Kac algebras on factors is also presented. No assumptions are made on the existence of a normal conditional expectation onto $N$.
We prove that the $L^1$-algebra of any non-Kac type compact quantum group does not satisfy operator biflatness. Since operator amenability implies operator biflatness, this result shows that any co-amenable, non-Kac type compact quantum group gives a counter example to the conjecture that $L^1(\Gb)$ is operator amenable if and only if $\Gb$ is amenable and co-amenable for any locally compact quantum group $\Gb$. The result also implies that the $L^1$-algebra of a locally compact quantum group is operator biprojective if and only if $\Gb$ is compact and of Kac type.
In this paper we study actions of locally compact quantum groups on von Neumann algebras and prove that every action has a canonical unitary implementation, paralleling Haagerup's classical result on the unitary implementation of a locally compact group action. This result is an important tool in the study of quantum groups in action. We will use it in this paper to study subfactors and inclusions of von Neumann algebras. When alpha is an action of a locally compact quantum group on the von Neumann algebra N we can give necessary and sufficient conditions under which the inclusion of the fixed…
We prove that given any compact group G, there exists a minimal action of G on a II_1 factor M such that the bimodule category of the fixed-point II_1 factor M^G is naturally equivalent with the representation category of G. In particular, all subfactors of M^G with finite Jones index can be described explicitly.
This is a survey of recent results on classification of compact quantum groups of Lie type, by which we mean quantum groups with the same fusion rules and dimensions of representations as for a compact connected Lie group $G$. The classification is based on a categorical duality for quantum group actions recently developed by De Commer and the authors in the spirit of Woronowicz's Tannaka--Krein duality theorem. The duality establishes a correspondence between the actions of a compact quantum group $H$ on unital C$^*$-algebras and the module categories over its representation category Rep $H$.…
We study actions of compact quantum groups on type I factors, which may be interpreted as projective representations of compact quantum groups. We generalize to this setting some of Woronowicz' results concerning Peter-Weyl theory for compact quantum groups. The main new phenomenon is that for general compact quantum groups (more precisely, those which are not of Kac type), not all irreducible projective representations have to be finite-dimensional. As applications, we consider the theory of projective representations for the compact quantum groups associated to group von Neumann algebras of …
The main aim of this paper is to introduce some examples of non-compact locally compact quantum groups to a non-specialized audience. The major importance of these examples is their simplicity. Other examples as the quantum E(2) group of Woronowicz are much more difficult to construct. We will make use of the bicrossed product construction to obtain our examples. This construction dates back to Kac, Takeuchi and Majid. It was also considered by Baaj & Skandalis.
We show that the quantum disk, i.e. the quantum space corresponding to the Toeplitz C*-algebra does not admit any compact quantum group structure. We prove that if such a structure existed the resulting compact quantum group would simultaneously be of Kac type and not of Kac type. The main tools used in the solution come from the theory of type I locally compact quantum groups, but also from the theory of operators on Hilbert spaces.
We prove that a compact quantum group with faithful Haar state which has a faithful action on a compact space must be a Kac algebra, with bounded antipode and the square of the antipode being identity. The main tool in proving this is the theory of ergodic quantum group action on $C^*$ algebras. Using the above fact, we also formulate a definition of isometric action of a compact quantum group on a compact metric space, generalizing the definition given by Banica for finite metric spaces, and prove for certain special class of metric spaces the existence of the universal object in the category…
We study analogues of the radial subalgebras in free group factors (called the algebras of class functions) in the setting of compact quantum groups. For the free orthogonal quantum groups we show that they are not MASAs, as soon as we are in a non-Kac situation. The most important notion to our present work is that of a (quasi-)split inclusion. We prove that the inclusion of the algebra of class functions is quasi-split for some unitary quantum groups; in this case the subalgebra is non-abelian and we also obtain a result concerning its relative commutant. In the positive direction, we constr…
Given a (reduced) locally compact quantum group $A$, we can consider the convolution algebra $L^1(A)$ (which can be identified as the predual of the von Neumann algebra form of $A$). It is conjectured that $L^1(A)$ is operator biprojective if and only if $A$ is compact. The "only if" part always holds, and the "if" part holds for Kac algebras. We show that if the splitting morphism associated with $L^1(A)$ being biprojective can be chosen to be completely positive, or just contractive, then we already have a Kac algebra. We give another proof of the converse, indicating how modular properties …
We show that a compact quantum group all whose irreducible representations have dimension bounded by a fixed constant must be of Kac type, in other words, its Haar measure is a trace. The proof is based on establishing several facts concerning operators related to modular properties of the Haar measure. In particular we study spectrum of these operators and the dimension of some of their eigenspaces in relation to the quantum dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation.
Banica and Vergnioux have shown that the dual discrete quantum group of a compact simply connected Lie group has polynomial growth of order the real manifold dimension. We extend this result to a general compact group and its topological dimension, by connecting it with the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of an algebra. Furthermore, we show that polynomial growth for a compact quantum group G of Kac type implies *-regularity of the Fourier algebra A(G), that is every closed ideal of C(G) has a dense intersection with A(G). In particular, A(G) has a unique C*-norm.
We introduce the analog of Bohr compactification for discrete quantum groups on C*-algebra level. The cases of unimodular and general C*-algebraic discrete quantum groups are treated separately. The passage from the former case to the latter is done with help of the concept of canonical Kac quotient for compact quantum groups\footnotemark. Several examples are presented and passage to the Bohr compactification is investigated.
We give local upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the modular operator associated to an ergodic action of a compact quantum group on a unital C*-algebra. They involve the modular theory of the quantum group and the growth rate of quantum dimensions of its representations and they become sharp if other integral invariants grow subexponentially. For compact groups, this reduces to the finiteness theorem of Hoegh-Krohn, Landstad and Stormer. Consequently, compact quantum groups of Kac type admitting an ergodic action with a non-tracial invariant state must have representations whose dim…
An action of a locally compact group or quantum group on a factor is said to be strictly outer when the relative commutant of the factor in the crossed product is trivial. We show that all locally compact quantum groups can act strictly outerly on a free Araki-Woods factor and that all locally compact groups can act strictly outerly on the hyperfinite II_1 factor. We define a kind of Connes' T invariant for locally compact quantum groups and prove a link with the possibility of acting strictly outerly on a factor with a given T invariant. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence o…
The paper is concerned with the extension of the classical study of probability measures on a compact group which are square roots of the Haar measure, due to Diaconis and Shahshahani, to the context of compact quantum groups. We provide a simple characterisation for compact quantum groups which admit no non-trivial square roots of the Haar state in terms of their corepresentation theory. In particular it is shown that such compact quantum groups are necessarily of Kac type and their subalgebras generated by the coefficients of a fixed two-dimensional irreducible corepresentation are isomorphi…
We introduce the Gaussian part of a compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$, namely the largest quantum subgroup of $\mathbb{G}$ supporting all the Gaussian functionals of $\mathbb{G}$. We prove that the Gaussian part is always contained in the Kac part, and characterise Gaussian parts of classical compact groups, duals of classical discrete groups and $q$-deformations of compact Lie groups. The notion turns out to be related to a new concept of "strong connectedness" and we exhibit several examples of both strongly connected and totally strongly disconnected compact quantum groups.
Spectral measures provide invariants for braided subfactors via fusion modules. In this paper we study joint spectral measures associated to the compact connected rank two Lie group $SO(5)$ and its double cover the compact connected, simply-connected rank two Lie group $Sp(2)$, including the McKay graphs for the irreducible representations of $Sp(2)$ and $SO(5)$ and their maximal tori, and fusion modules associated to the $Sp(2)$ modular invariants.
We introduce an appropriate notion of inner amenability for locally compact quantum groups, study its basic properties, related notions, and examples arising from the bicrossed product construction. We relate these notions to homological properties of the dual quantum group, which allow us to generalize a well-known result of Lau--Paterson, resolve a recent conjecture of Ng--Viselter, and prove that, for inner amenable quantum groups $\mathbb{G}$, approximation properties of the dual operator algebras can be averaged to approximation properties $\mathbb{G}$. Similar homological techniques are …
