A well-known theorem of Day and Dixmier states that any uniformly bounded representation of an amenable locally compact group $G$ on a Hilbert space is similar to a unitary representation. Within the category of locally compact quantum groups, the conjectural analogue of the Day-Dixmier theorem is that every completely bounded Hilbert space representation of the convolution algebra of an amenable locally compact quantum group should be similar to a $\ast$-representation. We prove that this conjecture is false for a large class of non-Kac type compact quantum groups, including all $q$-deformations of compact simply connected semisimple Lie groups. On the other hand, within the Kac framework, we prove that the Day-Dixmier theorem does indeed hold for several new classes of examples, including amenable discrete quantum groups of Kac-type.
In this paper we complete in several aspects the picture of locally compact quantum groups. First of all we give a definition of a locally compact quantum group in the von Neumann algebraic setting and show how to deduce from it a C*-algebraic quantum group. Further we prove several results about locally compact quantum groups which are important for applications, but were not yet settled in our paper "Locally compact quantum groups". We prove a serious strengthening of the left invariance of the Haar weight, and we give several formulas connecting the locally compact quantum group with its du…
In the framework of locally compact quantum groups, we study cocycle actions. We develop the cocycle bicrossed product construction, starting from a matched pair of locally compact quantum groups. We define exact sequences and establish a one-to-one correspondence between cocycle bicrossed products and cleft extensions. In this way, we obtain new examples of locally compact quantum groups.
Bornological quantum groups were introduced by Voigt in order to generalize the theory of algebraic quantum groups in the sense of van Daele. In particular the class of bornological quantum groups contains all classical locally compact groups. In this paper we prove that a bornological quantum group gives rise to a locally compact quantum group, in a similar way to Kustermans and van Daele's result for algebraic quantum groups. We show that the bornological quantum groups, although more general than the algebraic ones, share most of their nice properties. We also argue that bornological quantu…
We study lattice operations on the set of idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group corresponding to the operations of intersection of compact subgroups and forming the subgroup generated by two compact subgroups. Normal ($σ$-weakly continuous) idempotent states are investigated and a duality between normal idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and on its dual $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$ is established. Additionally we analyze the question when a left coideal corresponding canonically to an idempotent state is finite dimensional and give a characterization of …
Correspondence between idempotent states and expected right-invariant subalgebras is extended to non-coamenable, non-unimodular locally compact quantum groups; in particular left convolution operators are shown to automatically preserve the right Haar weight.
We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between compact quantum subgroups of a co-amenable locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and certain left invariant C*-subalgebras of $C_0(\mathbb{G})$. We also prove that every compact quantum subgroup of a co-amenable quantum group is co-amenable. Moreover, there is a one-to-one correspondence between open subgroups of an amenable locally compact group $G$ and non-zero, invariant C*-subalgebras of the group C*-algebra $C^*(G)$.
The theory of measured quantum groupoids, as defined by Lesieur and myself, was made to generalize the theory of quantum groups made by Kustarmans and Vaes, but was only defined in a von Neumann algebra setting; Th. Timmermann constructed locally compact quantum groupoids, which is a C*-version of quantum groupoids. Here, we associate to such a locally compact quantum groupoid a measured quantum groupoid in which it is weakly dense; we then associate to a measured quantum groupoid a locally compact quantum groupoid which is weakly dense in the measured quantum groupoid, but such a locally comp…
We introduce the construction of induced corepresentations in the setting of locally compact quantum groups and prove that the resulting induced corepresentations are unitary under some mild integrability condition. We also establish a quantum analogue of the classical bijective correspondence between quasi-invariant measures and certain measures on the larger locally compact group.
The Haar measure on some locally compact quantum groups is constructed. The main example we treat is the az+b-group of Woronowicz. We also briefly consider some other examples (like the ax+b-group). We get the first examples of a locally compact quantum group where the Haar measure is not invariant with respect to the scaling group.
We generalize the representation theorem of Junge, Neufang and Ruan [A representation theorem for locally compact quantum groups, Internat. J. Math. 20(3) (2009) 377-400], and some of the important results which were used in its proof, to the case of actions of locally compact quantum groups on von Neumann algebras.
We show a classification theorem for locally compact separable abelain group actions on factorsw with the Rohlin property. This is a generalization of Masuda and Tomatsu's work.
We develop the twisting construction for locally compact quantum groups. A new feature, in contrast to the previous work of M. Enock and the second author, is a non-trivial deformation of the Haar measure. Then we construct Rieffel's deformation of locally compact quantum groups and show that it is dual to the twisting. This allows to give new interesting concrete examples of locally compact quantum groups, in particular, deformations of the classical $az+b$ group and of the Woronowicz' quantum $az+b$ group.
Dana P. Williams raised in [Proc. Am. Math. Soc., Ser. B, 2016] the following question: Must a second countable, locally compact, transitive groupoid have open range map? This paper gives a negative answer to that question. Although a second countable, locally compact transitive groupoid G may fail to have open range map, we prove that we can replace its topology with a topology which is also second countable, locally compact, and with respect to which G is a topological groupoid whose range map is open. Moreover, the two topologies generate the same Borel structure and coincide on the fibres …
We give some new characterizations of exactness for locally compact second countable groups. In particular, we prove that a locally compact second countable group is exact if and only if it admits a topologically amenable action on a compact Hausdorff space. This answers an open question by Anantharaman-Delaroche.
We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the Fourier algebra A(G) for a locally compact groupoid G. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.
Equivariant T-duality triples of locally compact abelian groups are considered. The motivating example dealing with the group $\R^n$ containing a lattice $\Z^n$ comes with an isomorphism in twisted equivariant K-theory.
In this short note we introduce a notion called "quantum injectivity" of locally compact quantum groups, and prove that it is equivalent to amenability of the dual. Particularly, this provides a new characterization of amenability of locally compact groups.
In this paper, we generalize Young's inequality for locally compact quantum groups and obtain some results for extremal pairs of Young's inequality and extremal functions of Hausdorff-Young inequality.
We extend the classical Stone duality between zero dimensional compact Hausdorff spaces and Boolean algebras. Specifically, we simultaneously remove the zero dimensionality restriction and extend to étale groupoids, obtaining a duality with an elementary class of inverse semigroups.
It is proved that every second countable locally Hausdorff and locally compact continuous groupoid has a Borel set of units that meets every orbit and is what is called "lacunary," a property that implies that the intersection with every orbit is countable.
We study universal properties of locally compact G-spaces for countable infinite groups G. In particular we consider open invariant subsets of the β-compactification of G (which is a G-space in a natural way), and their minimal closed invariant subspaces. These are locally compact free G-spaces, and the latter are also minimal. We examine the properies of these G-spaces with emphasis on their universal properties. As an example of our resuts, we use combinatorial methods to show that each countable infinite group admits a free minimal action on the locally compact non-compact Cantor set.
We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the {\em Fourier algebra} $A(G)$ for a locally compact groupoid $G$. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.
As is well known, the equivalence between amenability of a locally compact group $G$ and injectivity of its von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}(G)$ does not hold in general beyond inner amenable groups. In this paper, we show that the equivalence persists for all locally compact groups if $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is considered as a $\mathcal{T}(L_2(G))$-module with respect to a natural action. In fact, we prove an appropriate version of this result for every locally compact quantum group.
This is a short survey on idempotent states on locally compact groups and locally compact quantum groups. The central topic is the relationship between idempotent states, subgroups and invariant C*-subalgebras. We concentrate on recent results on locally compact quantum groups, but begin with the classical notion of idempotent probability measure. We also consider the `intermediate' case of idempotent states in the Fourier--Stieltjes algebra: this is the dual case of idempotent probability measures and so an instance of idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group.
The purpose of this paper is extend the notion of morphism of groupoids introduced by Zakrzewski to locally compact $σ$-compact groupoids endowed with Haar systems and to use the extension to construct a covariant functor from this category to a category of $C^{\ast}$-algebras in the sense of Woronowicz.
We introduce the notion of a quantum locally compact metric space, which is the noncommutative analogue of a locally compact metric space, and generalize to the nonunital setting the notion of quantum metric spaces introduced by Rieffel. We then provide several examples of such structures, including the Moyal plane, as well as compact quantum metric spaces and locally compact metric spaces. This paper provides an answer to the question raised in the literature about the proper notion of a quantum metric space in the nonunital setup and offers important insights into noncommutative geometry for…
The purpose of this paper is to study property (RD) for locally compact Hecke pairs. We discuss length functions on Hecke pairs and the growth of Hecke pairs. We establish an equivalence between property (RD) of locally compact groups and property (RD) of certain locally compact Hecke pairs. This allows us to transfer several important results concerning property (RD) of locally compact groups into our setting, and consequently to identify many classes of examples of locally compact Hecke pairs with property (RD). We also show that a reduced discrete Hecke pair $(G,H)$ has (RD) if and only if …
We combine harmonic analysis and operator algebraic techniques to give a concise argument that the left regular representation of a locally compact group is cyclic if and only if the group is first countable, a result first proved by Greenleaf and Moskowitz.
In this paper, we introduce properties including groupoid comparison, pure infiniteness and paradoxical comparison as well as a new algebraic tool called groupoid semigroup for locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoids. We show these new tools help establishing pure infiniteness of reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we show a dichotomy of stably finiteness against pure infiniteness for reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras arising from locally compact Hausdorff étale minimal topological principal groupoids. This generalizes the dichotomy obtained by Bönicke-Li and Rainone-Sims. We a…
We discuss a very general Kirillov Theory for the representations of certain nilpotent groups which gives a combined view an many known examples from the literature.
Let $\G$ be a unimodular type I second countable locally compact group and $\wG$ its unitary dual. Motivated by a recent pseudo-differential calculus, we develop a positive Berezin-type quantization with operator-valued symbols defined on $\wG\times\G$.
We extend a theorem of Haagerup and Kraus in the C*-algebra context: for a locally compact group with the approximation property (AP), the reduced C*-crossed product construction preserves the strong operator approximation property (SOAP). In particular their reduced group C*-algebras have the SOAP. Our method also solves another open problem: the AP implies exactness for general locally compact groups.
Supramenability of groups is characterised in terms of invariant measures on locally compact spaces. This opens the door to constructing interesting crossed product C*-algebras for non-supramenable groups. In particular, stable Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class are constructed using crossed products for both amenable and non-amenable groups.
We study class $\mathcal S$ for locally compact groups. We characterize locally compact groups in this class as groups having an amenable action on a boundary that is small at infinity, generalizing a theorem of Ozawa. Using this characterization, we provide new examples of groups in class $\mathcal S$ and prove unique prime factorization results for group von Neumann algebras of products of locally compact groups in this class. We also prove that class $\mathcal S$ is a measure equivalence invariant.
For locally compact groups, we define an analogue to Yu's property A that he defined for discrete metric spaces. We show that our property A for locally compact groups agrees with Roe's notion of property A for proper metric spaces, defined in \cite{R05}. We prove that many of the results that are known to hold in the discrete setting, hold also in the locally compact setting. In particular, we show that property A is equivalent to amenability at infinity (see \cite{HR00} for the discrete case), and that a locally compact group with property A embeds uniformly into a Hilbert space (see \cite{Y…
