It is well known in Banach space theory that for a finite dimensional space $E$ there exists a constant $c_E$, such that for all sequences $(x_k)_k \subset E$ one has \[ \summ_k \noo x_k \rrm \kl c_E \pl \sup_{\eps_k \pm 1} \noo \summ_k \eps_k x_k \rrm \pl .\] Moreover, if $E$ is of dimension $n$ the constant $c_E$ ranges between $\sqrt{n}$ and $n$. This implies that absolute convergence and unconditional convergence only coincide in finite dimensional spaces. We will characterize Banach spaces $X$, where the constant $c_E \sim \sqrt{n}$ for all finite dimensional subspaces. More generally, we prove that an estimate $c_E \kll c n^{1-\frac{1}{q}}$holds for all $n \in \nz$ and all $n$-dimensional subspaces $E$ of $X$ if and only if the eigenvalues of every operator factoring through $\ell_{\infty}$ decrease of order $k^{-\frac{1}{q}}$ if and only if $X$ is of weak cotype $q$, introduced by Pisier and Mascioni. We emphasize that in contrast to Talagrand's equivalence theorem on cotype $q$ and absolutely $(q,1)$-summing spaces this extendsto the case $q=2$. If $q>2$ and one of the conditions above is satisfied one has \[ \kla \summ_k \noo x_k \rrm^q \mer^{\frac{1}{q}} \kl C^{1+l}\pl (1+{\rm log}_2)^{(l)}((1 +{\rm log}_2 n)^{\frac{1}{q}}) \pl \ez \noo \summ_k \eps_k x_k \rrm \] for all $n,l \in \nz$ and $(x_k)_k \subset E$, $E$ a $n$ dimensional subspace of $X$. In the case $q=2$ the same holds if we replace the expected value by the supremum.
Cotype is used in this paper to prove new results concerning the existence of non-absolutely summing linear operators between Banach spaces. We derive consequences that extend/generalize/ complement some classic results. We also point out that some of our results are sharp.
In this paper we study absolutely summing mappings on Banach spaces by exploring the cotype of their domains and ranges. It is proved that every $n$% -linear mapping from $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$-spaces into $\mathbb{K}$ is $% (2;2,...,2,\infty)$-summing and also shown that every $n$-linear mapping from $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$-spaces into $F$ is $(q;2,...,2)$-summing whenever $F$ has cotype $q.$ We also give new examples of analytic summing mappings and polynomial and multilinear versions of a linear Extrapolation Theorem.
Given an infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ and a Banach space $Y$ with no finite cotype, we determine whether or not every continuous linear operator from $X$ to $Y$ is absolutely $(q;p)$-summing for almost all choices of $p$ and $q$, including the case $p=q$. If $X$ assumes its cotype, the problem is solved for all choices of $p$ and $q$. Applications to the theory of dominated multilinear mappings are also provided.
Grothendieck's theorem asserts that every continuous linear operator from $\ell_1$ to $\ell_2$ is absolutely $(1,1)$-summing. This kind of result is commonly called coincidence result. In this paper we investigate coincidence results in the multilinear setting, showing how the cotype of the spaces involved affect such results. The special role played by $\ell_1$ spaces is also investigated with relation to interpolation of tensor products. In particular, an open problem on the interpolation of $m$ injective tensor products is solved.
A famous result due to Grothendieck asserts that every continuous linear operator from $\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}$ is absolutely $(1,1)$-summing. If $n\geq2,$ however, it is very simple to prove that every continuous $n$-linear operator from $\ell_{1}\times...\times\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}$ is absolutely $(1;1,...,1) $-summing, and even absolutely $(\frac{2}% {n};1,...,1) $-summing$.$ In this note we deal with the following problem: Given a positive integer $n\geq2$, what is the best constant $g_{n}>0$ so that every $n$-linear operator from $\ell_{1}\times...\times\ell_{1}$ to $\ell_{2}$ is absolut…
We show that for any operator $T:l_\infty^N\to Y$, where $Y$ is a Banach space, that its cotype 2 constant, $K_2(T)$, is related to its $(2,1)$-summing norm, $π_{2,1}(T)$, by $K_2(T) \le c \log\log N π_{2,1}(T) $. Thus, we can show that there is an operator $T:C(K)\to Y$ that has cotype 2, but is not 2-summing.
The aim of this paper is to start the study of multilinear generalizations of the classical ideals of linear operators of type $p$ and cotype $q$. As a first step in a theory we believe will be long and fruitful, we propose a notion of type and cotype of multilinear operators and the resulting classes of such mappings are studied in the setting of the theory of Banach/quasi-Banach ideals of multilinear operators. Distinctions between the linear and the multilinear theories are pointed out, typical multilinear features of the theory are emphasized and many illustrative examples are provided. Th…
We introduce non-linear versions of the classical cotype of Banach spaces. We show that spaces with l.u.st and cotype, and that spaces having Fourier cotype enjoy our non-linear cotype. We apply these concepts to get results on convergence of vector-valued power series in infinite many variables and on $\ell_{1}$-multipliers of vector-valued Dirichlet series. Finally we introduce cotype with respect to indexing sets, an idea that includes our previous definitions.
This paper deals with extensions or twisted sums of Banach spaces that come induced by complex interpolation and the relation between the type and cotype of the spaces in the interpolation scale and the nontriviality and singularity of the induced extension. The results are presented in the context of interpolation of families of Banach spaces, and are applied to the study of submodules of Schatten classes. We also obtain nontrivial extensions of spaces without the CAP which also fail the CAP.
We extend a theorem of Kato on similarity for sequences of projections in Hilbert spaces to the case of isomorphic Schauder decompositions in certain Banach spaces. To this end we use $\ell_Ψ$-Hilbertian and $\infty$-Hilbertian Schauder decompositions instead of orthogonal Schauder decompositions, generalize the concept of an orthogonal Schauder decomposition in a Hilbert space and introduce the class of spaces with Schauder-Orlicz decompositions. Furthermore, we generalize the notions of type, cotype, infratype and $M$-cotype of a Banach space and study the properties of unconditional Schaude…
Naor and Mendel's metric cotype extends the notion of the Rademacher cotype of a Banach space to all metric spaces. Every Banach space has metric cotype at least 2. We show that any metric space that is bi-Lipschitz equivalent to an ultrametric space has infinimal metric cotype 1. We discuss the invariance of metric cotype inequalities under snowflaking mappings and Gromov-Hausdorff limits, and use these facts to establish a partial converse of the main result.
It is shown that if (X, ||.||_X) is a Banach space with Rademacher cotype q then for every integer n there exists an even integer m< n^{1+1/q}$ such that for every f:Z_m^n --> X we have $\sum_{j=1}^n \Avg_x [ ||f(x+ (m/2) e_j)-f(x) ||_X^q ] < C m^q \Avg_{\e,x} [ ||f(x+\e)-f(x) ||_X^q ]$, where the expectations are with respect to uniformly chosen x\in Z_m^n and \e\in \{-1,0,1\}^n, and all the implied constants may depend only on q and the Rademacher cotype q constant of X. This improves the bound of m< n^{2+\frac{1}{q}} from [Mendel, Naor 2008]. The proof of the above inequality is based on a …
In the article is introduced a new class of Banach spaces that are called sub B-convex. Namely, a Banach space X is said to be B -convex if it may be represented as a direct sum l_1+ W, where W is B-convex. It will be shown that any separable sub B-convex Banach space X may be almost isometrically embedded in a separable Banach space G(X) of the same cotype as X, which has a series of properties. Namely, G(X) is an approximate envelope, i.e. any separable Banach space which is finitely representable in G(X) may be almost isometrically embedded into G(X); G(X)is almost isotropic; G(X) is existe…
We are concerned about improvements of the modulus of convexity by renormings of a super-reflexive Banach space. Typically optimal results are beyond Pisier's power functions bounds $t^p$, with $p \geq 2$, and they are related to the notion of generalized cotype. We obtain an explicit upper bound for all the modulus of convexity of equivalent renormings and we show that if this bound is equivalent to $t^2$, the best possible, then the space admits a renorming with modulus of power type $2$. We show that a UMD space admits a renormings with modulus of convexity bigger, up to a multiplicative co…
In this paper we provide an abstract aproach to the study of classes of multiple summing multilinear operators between Banach spaces. The main purpose is unify the study of several known classes and results, for example multiple $(p, q_1,\dots, q_n)$-summing operators, multiple mixing $(s, q, p)$-summing operators and multiple strong $(s, q, p)$-mixing summing operators. We also define new class of multiple summing multilinear operator that are particular cases of our construction and, therefore, satisfy the results proved in the paper.
One classical result in greedy approximation theory is that almost-greedy and semi-greedy bases are equivalent in the context of Schauder bases in Banach spaces with finite cotype. This result was proved by S. J. Dilworth, N. J. Kalton and D. Kutzarova in [7] and, recently, the first author in [2] proved that the condition of finite cotype can be removed in this result. In [11], the authors extend the notion of semi-greediness to the context of weights and proved the following: if w is a weight and $\mathcal B$ is a Schauder basis in a Banach space $\mathbb X$ with finite cotype, then w-semi-g…
The main result of this paper states that if a Banach space X has the property that every bounded operator from an arbitrary subspace of X into an arbitrary Banach space of cotype 2 extends to a bounded operator on X, then $B(\ell_{\infty},X^*)=Π_2(\ell_{\infty},X^*)$. If in addition X has the Gaussian average property, then it is of type 2. This implies that the same conclusion holds if X has the Gordon-Lewis property (in particular X could be a Banach lattice) or if X is isomorphic to a subspace of a Banach lattice of finite cotype, thus solving the Maurey extension property for these classe…
We introduce the notion of cotype of a metric space, and prove that for Banach spaces it coincides with the classical notion of Rademacher cotype. This yields a concrete version of Ribe's theorem, settling a long standing open problem in the nonlinear theory of Banach spaces. We apply our results to several problems in metric geometry. Namely, we use metric cotype in the study of uniform and coarse embeddings, settling in particular the problem of classifying when L_p coarsely or uniformly embeds into L_q. We also prove a nonlinear analog of the Maurey-Pisier theorem, and use it to answer a qu…
In the short note we prove that for every $0<p<1$, there exists an infinite dimensional closed linear subspace of $\mathcal{L}\left( \ell_{p};\ell_{p}\right) $ every nonzero element of which is non $(r,s)$-absolutely summing operator for the real numbers $r,s$ with $1\leq s\leq r<\infty$. This improve a result obtained in \cite{DanielT}.
If $ϕ$ is a submeasure satisfying an appropriate lower estimate we give a quantitative result on the total mass of a measure $μ$ satisfying $0\leμ\leϕ.$ We give a dual result for supermeasures and then use these results to investigate convexity on non-locally convex quasi-Banach lattices. We then show how to use these results to extend some factorization theorems due to Pisier to the setting of quasi-Banach spaces. We conclude by showing that if $X$ is a quasi-Banach space of cotype two then any operator $T:C(Ω)\to X$ is 2-absolutely summing and factors through a Hilbert space and discussing g…
We study the $H^1$-projective Banach spaces. We prove that they have the Analytic Radon-Nikodym Property, and that they are cotype 2 spaces which satisfy Grothendieck's Theorem. We show also that the ultraproduct of $H^1$-projective spaces is $H^1$-projective. Other results are also discussed.
In this paper we consider generalized square function norms of holomorphic functions with values in a Banach space. One of the main results is a characterization of embeddings of the form \[L^p(X)\subseteq γ(X) \subseteq L^q(X),\] in terms of the type $p$ and cotype $q$ for the Banach space $X$. As an application we prove $L^p$-estimates for vector-valued Littlewood-Paley-Stein $g$-functions and derive an embedding result for real and complex interpolation spaces under type and cotype conditions.
In [3] it was proved that almost-greedy and semi-greedy bases are equivalent in the context of Banach spaces with finite cotype. In this paper we show this equivalence for general Banach spaces.
A finite-dimensional analogue of the known Gordon-Lewis constant of a Banach space X is introduced; in its definition are used only finite rank operators. It is shown that there exist Banach spaces such that the standard Gordon-Lewis constant of X is finite and its finite-dimensional analogue GLfin(X) is infinite. Moreover, for any Banach space X of cotype 2 its finite-dimensional constant GLfin(X) is finite too.
Let $E$ and $F$ be complex Banach spaces, $U$ be an open subset of $E$ and $1\leq p\leq\infty$. We introduce and study the notion of a Cohen strongly $p$-summing holomorphic mapping from $U$ to $F$, a holomorphic version of a strongly $p$-summing linear operator. For such mappings, we establish both Pietsch domination/factorization theorems and analyse their linearizations from $\mathcal{G}^\infty(U)$ (the canonical predual of $\mathcal{H}^\infty(U)$) and their transpositions on $\mathcal{H}^\infty(U)$. Concerning the space $\mathcal{D}_p^{\mathcal{H}^\infty}(U,F)$ formed by such mappings and …
In this paper we develop the theory of Fourier multiplier operators $T_{m}:L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{d};X)\to L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^{d};Y)$, for Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, $1\leq p\leq q\leq \infty$ and $m:\mathbb{R}^d\to \mathcal{L}(X,Y)$ an operator-valued symbol. The case $p=q$ has been studied extensively since the 1980's, but far less is known for $p<q$. In the scalar setting one can deduce results for $p<q$ from the case $p=q$. However, in the vector-valued setting this leads to restrictions both on the smoothness of the multiplier and on the class of Banach spaces. For example, one often needs that …
Is shown that any separable superreflexive Banach space X may be isometrically embedded in a separable superreflexive Banach space Z=Z(X) (which, in addition, is of the same type and cotype as X) such that its conjugate admits a continuous surjection on each its subspace. This gives an affirmative answer on S. Banach problem: Whether there exists a Banach space X, non isomorphic to a Hilbert space, which admits a continuous linear surjection on each its subspace and is essentially different from l_1?
We show that there exists a strong uniform embedding from any proper metric space into any Banach space without cotype. Then we prove a result concerning the Lipschitz embedding of locally finite subsets of $\mathcal{L}_{p}$-spaces. We use this locally finite result to construct a coarse bi-Lipschitz embedding for proper subsets of any $\mathcal{L}_p$-space into any Banach space $X$ containing the $\ell_p^n$'s. Finally using an argument of G. Schechtman we prove that for general proper metric spaces and for Banach spaces without cotype a converse statement holds.
It is shown that for every $p\in (1,\infty)$ there exists a Banach space $X$ of finite cotype such that the projective tensor product $\ell_p\tp X$ fails to have finite cotype. More generally, if $p_1,p_2,p_3\in (1,\infty)$ satisfy $\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2}+\frac{1}{p_3}\le 1$ then $\ell_{p_1}\tp\ell_{p_2}\tp\ell_{p_3}$ does not have finite cotype. This is a proved via a connection to the theory of locally decodable codes.
Let $1\le p\le q<\infty$ and let $X$ be a $p$-convex Banach function space over a $σ$-finite measure $μ$. We combine the structure of the spaces $L^p(μ)$ and $L^q(ξ)$ for constructing the new space $S_{X_p}^{\,q}(ξ)$, where $ξ$ is a probability Radon measure on a certain compact set associated to $X$. We show some of its properties, and the relevant fact that every $q$-summing operator $T$ defined on $X$ can be continuously (strongly) extended to $S_{X_p}^{\,q}(ξ)$. This result turns out to be a mixture of the Pietsch and Maurey-Rosenthal factorization theorems, which provide (strong) factoriz…
We establish variant Khintchine inequalities on normed spaces of Hanner type and cotype, in which the Rademacher distribution corresponding to classical Khintchine inequality is replaced by general symmetric distributions. The proof involves the $p$-barycenter and Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. More importantly, by employing these Khintchine inequalities, we get some lower bounds for Banach-Mazur distance between $l^p$-ball and a general centrally symmetric convex body.
We introduce asymptotic analogues of the Rademacher and martingale type and cotype of Banach spaces and operators acting on them. Some classical local theory results related, for example, to the `automatic-type' phenomenon, the type-cotype duality, or the Maurey-Pisier theorem, are extended to the asymptotic setting. We also investigate operator ideals corresponding to the asymptotic subtype/subcotype. As an application of this theory, we provide a sharp version of a result of Brooker and Lancien by showing that any twisted sum of Banach spaces with Szlenk power types $p$ and $q$ has Szlenk po…
We construct a general framework that generates classes of multilinear operators between Banach spaces which encompasses, as particular cases, the several classes of summing type multilinear operators that have been studied individually in the literature. Summing operators by blocks in the isotropic and anisotropic cases are taken into account. The classes we create are shown to be Banach ideals of multilinear operators and applications to coherence and coincidence theorems are provided.
We study the way in which the Euclidean subspaces of a Banach space fit together, somewhat in the spirit of the Kašin decomposition. The main tool that we introduce is an estimate regarding the convex hull of a convex body in John's position with a Euclidean ball of a given radius, which leads to a new and simplified proof of the randomized isomorphic Dvoretzky theorem. Our results also include a characterization of spaces with nontrivial cotype in terms of arrangements of Euclidean subspaces.
In this paper we prove coincidence results concerning spaces of absolutely summing multilinear mappings between Banach spaces. The nature of these results arises from two distinct approaches: the coincidence of two \textit{a priori} different classes of summing multilinear mappings and the summability of all multilinear mappings defined on products of Banach spaces. Optimal generalizations of known results are obtained. We also introduce and explore new techniques in the field, for example a technique to extend coincidence results for linear, bilinear and even trilinear mappings to general mul…
Recently an operator space version of type and cotype, namely type $(p,H)$ and cotype $(q,H)$ of operator spaces for $1\leq p \leq 2\leq q \leq \infty$ and a subquadratic and homogeneous Hilbetian operator space $H$ were introduced and investigated by the author. In this paper we define weak type $(2,H)$ (resp. weak cotype $(2,H)$) of operator spaces, which lies strictly between type $(2,H)$ (resp. cotype $(2,H)$) and type $(p,H)$ for all $1\leq p <2$ (resp. cotype $(q,H)$ for all $2<q \leq \infty$). This is an analogue of weak type 2 and weak cotype 2 in the Banach space case, so we develop a…
The paper contains the following results and observations: (1) There exists a sequence of unweighted graphs $\{G_n\}_n$ with maximum degree 3 such that a Banach space $X$ has no nontrivial cotype iff $\{G_n\}_n$ admit uniformly bilipschitz embeddings into $X$; (2) The same for Banach spaces with no nontrivial type; (3) A sequence $\{G_n\}$ characterizing Banach spaces with no nontrivial cotype in the sense described above can be chosen to be a sequence of bounded degree expanders; (4) The infinite diamond does not admit a bilipschitz embedding into Banach spaces with the Radon-Nikodým property…
We consider the fractional derivative of a general Poisson semigroup. With this fractional derivative we define the generalized fractional Littlewood-Paley $g$-function for semigroups acting on $L^p$-spaces of functions with values in Banach spaces. We give a characterization of the classes of Banach spaces for which the fractional Litlewood-Paley $g$-function is bounded on $L^p$-spaces. We show that the class of Banach spaces is independent of the order of derivation and coincides with the classical (Lusin type/cotype) case. It is also shown that the same kind of results exist for the case of…
The main purpose of this paper is the study of a~new class of summing multilinear operators acting from the product of Banach lattices with some nontrivial lattice convexity. A~mixed Pietsch-Maurey-Rosenthal type factorization theorem for these operators is proved under weaker convexity requirements than the ones that are needed in the Maurey-Rosenthal factorization through products of $L^q$-spaces. A~by-product of our factorization is an extension of multilinear operators defined by a~$q$-concavity type property to a~product of special Banach function lattices which inherit some lattice-geome…
If Z is a quotient of a subspace of a separable Banach space X, and V is any separable Banach space, then there is a Banach couple (A_0,A_1) such that A_0 and A_1 are isometric to $X\oplus V$, and any intermediate space obtained using the real or complex interpolation method contains a complemented subspace isomorphic to Z. Thus many properties of Banach spaces, including having non-trivial cotype, having the Radon-Nikodym property, and having the analytic unconditional martingale difference sequence property, do not pass to intermediate spaces.
We study the ideals of linear operators between Banach spaces determined by the transformation of vector-valued sequences involving the new sequence space introduced by Karn and Sinha \cite{karnsinha} and the classical spaces of absolutely, weakly and Cohen strongly summable sequences. As applications, we prove a new factorization theorem for absolutely summing operators and a contribution to the existence of infinite dimensional spaces formed by non-absolutely summing operators is given.
In this paper, we construct the abstract ideal of polynomials. We show this is an ideal of Banach and, in a second moment, we explore the question of the coherence and compatibility of the pair composed by the abstract ideals of polynomials and multilinear applications.
We introduce stronger versions of the usual notions of martingale type p <= 2 and cotype q >= 2 of a Banach space X and show that these concepts are equivalent to uniform p-smoothness and q-convexity, respectively. All these are metric concepts, so they depend on the particular norm in X. These concepts allow us to get some more insight into the fine line between X being isomorphic to a uniformly p-smooth space or being uniformly p-smooth itself. Instead of looking at Banach spaces, we consider linear operators between Banach spaces right away. The situation of a Banach space X can be rediscov…
We investigate the quotient algebra $\mathfrak{A}_X^{\mathcal I}:=\mathcal I(X)/\overline{\mathcal F(X)}^{||\cdot||_{\mathcal I}}$ for Banach operator ideals $\mathcal I$ contained in the ideal of the compact operators, where $X$ is a Banach space that fails the $\mathcal I$-approximation property. The main results concern the nilpotent quotient algebras $\mathfrak A_X^{\mathcal{QN}_p}$ and $\mathfrak A_X^{\mathcal{SK}_p}$ for the quasi $p$-nuclear operators $\mathcal{QN}_p$ and the Sinha-Karn $p$-compact operators $\mathcal{SK}_p$. The results include the following: (i) if $X$ has cotype 2, t…
The abscissas of convergence, uniform convergence and absolute convergence of vector valued Dirichlet series with respect to the original topology and with respect to the weak topology $σ(X,X')$ of a locally convex space $X$, in particular of a Banach space $X$, are compared. The relation of their coincidence with geometric or topological properties of the underlying space $X$ is investigated. Cotype in the context of Banach spaces, and nuclearity and certain topological invariants for Fréchet spaces play a relevant role.
We prove the symmetric version of Kottman's theorem, that is to say, we demonstrate that the unit sphere of an infinite-dimensional Banach space contains an infinite subset $A$ with the property that $\|x\pm y\| > 1$ for distinct elements $x,y\in A$, thereby answering a question of J. M. F. Castillo. In the case where $X$ contains an infinite-dimensional separable dual space or an unconditional basic sequence, the set $A$ may be chosen in a way that $\|x\pm y\| \geqslant 1+\varepsilon$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$ and distinct $x,y\in A$. Under additional structural properties of $X$, such as no…
We prove a substantial extension of a well-known result due to Bennett and Carl: The inclusion of a 2-concave symmetric Banach sequence space E into l_2 is (E,1)-summing, i.e. for every unconditionally summable sequence (x_n) in E the scalar sequence (||x_n||_2) is contained in E. Various applications are given, e.g. to the theory of eigenvalue distribution of compact operators and approximation theory.
