A Banach space $\X$ has the complete continuity property (CCP) if each bounded linear operator from $L_1$ into $\X$ is completely continuous (i.e., maps weakly convergent sequences to norm convergent sequences). The main theorem shows that a Banach space failing the CCP (resp., failing the CCP and failing cotype) has a subspace with a finite dimensional decomposition (resp., basis) which fails the CCP.
We introduce and analyse the notion of slice continuity between operators on Banach spaces in the setting of the Daugavet property. It is shown that under the slice continuity assumption the Daugavet equation holds for weakly compact operators. As an application we define and characterise the Daugavet property for bilinear maps, and we prove that this allows us to describe some $p$-convexifications of the Daugavet equation for operators on Banach function spaces that have recently been introduced.
We characterize the weak-star point of continuity property for subspaces of dual spaces with separable predual and we deduce that the weak-star point of continuity property is determined by subspaces with a Schauder basis in the natural setting of dual spaces of separable Banach spaces. As a consequence of the above characterization we get that a dual space satisfies the Radon-Nikodym property if, and only if, every seminormalized topologically weak-star null tree has a boundedly complete branch, which improves some results in \cite{DF} obtained for the separable case. Also, as a consequence o…
Let X be a compact convex set and let ext X stand for the set of extreme points of X. We show that an affine function with the point of continuity property on X satisfies the minimum principle. As a corollary we obtain a generalization of a theorem by H.B. Cohen and C.H. Chu by proving the following result. Let X,Y be compact convex sets such that every extreme point of X and Y is a weak peak point and let the Banach-Mazur distance between spaces of affine continuous functions on X and Y is smaller then 2. Then ext X is homeomorphic to ext Y.
In this paper we introduce and study absolute continuity and singularity of positive operators acting on anti-dual pairs. We establish a general theorem that can be considered as a common generalization of various earlier Lebesgue-type decompositions. Different algebraic and topological characterizations of absolute continuity and singularity are supplied and also a complete description of uniqueness of the decomposition is provided. We apply the developed decomposition theory to some concrete objects including Hilbert space operators, Hermitian forms, representable functionals, and additive s…
For a compact Hausdorff space $S$, we prove that the closed unit ball of a closed linear subalgebra of the space of real-valued continuous functions on $S$, denoted by $C(S)$, satisfies property-$(P_1)$ (the set-valued generalization of strong proximinality) for the non-empty closed bounded subsets of the bidual of $C(S)$. Various stability results related to property-$(P_1)$ and semi-continuity properties of restricted Chebyshev-center maps are also established. As a consequence, we derive that if $Y$ is a proximinal finite co-dimensional subspace of $c_0$ then the closed unit ball of $Y$ sat…
In this paper we focus on the relation between Riemann integrability and weak continuity. A Banach space $X$ is said to have the weak Lebesgue property if every Riemann integrable function from $[0,1]$ into $X$ is weakly continuous almost everywhere. We prove that the weak Lebesgue property is stable under $\ell_1$-sums and obtain new examples of Banach spaces with and without this property. Furthermore, we characterize Dunford-Pettis operators in terms of Riemann integrability and provide a quantitative result about the size of the set of $τ$-continuous non Riemann integrable functions, with …
In this article we study the fractional Hankel transform and its inverse on certain Gel'fand-Shilov spaces of type S. The continuous fractional wavelet transform is defined involving the fractional Hankel transform. The continuity of fractional Hankel wavelet transform is discussed on Gel'fand-Shilov spaces of type S. This article goes further to discuss the continuity property of fractional Hankel transform and fractional Hankel wavelet transform on the ultradifferentiable function spaces.
For every $c\geq 1$, we define a strengthening of Kazhdan's Property (T) by considering uniformly bounded representations $π$ with fixed bound $|π|\leq c$. We carry out a systematic study of this property and show that it can be characterised by the weak*-continuity of the unique invariant mean on a suitable space of coefficients. For countable groups, we prove that the family of properties thus obtained yield an invariant at the von Neumann algebra level. Moreover, by focusing on certain representations of rank 1 Lie groups, we show that $\operatorname{Sp}(n,1)$ and $F_{4,-20}$ admit proper u…
In this paper, we prove strong type, weak type inequalities of Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator and fractional Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on variable sequence spaces lp(Z). This is achieved using Calderon-Zygmund decomposition for sequences, properties of modular functional and Log Holder continuity.
In this paper we consider the cone of all positive, bounded operators acting on an infinite dimensional, complex Hilbert space, and examine bijective maps that preserve absolute continuity in both directions. It turns out that these maps are exactly those that preserve singularity in both directions. Moreover, in some weak sense, such maps are always induced by bounded, invertible, linear- or conjugate linear operators of the underlying Hilbert space. Our result gives a possible generalization of a recent theorem of Molnar which characterizes maps on the positive cone that preserve the Lebesgu…
We establish an approximate fixed point result for self-maps on compact convex subsets of Hausdorff topological vector spaces where continuity is not a necessary condition.
We prove that all the composition operators $T_f(g):= f\circ g$, which take the Adams-Frazier space $W^{m}_{p}\cap \dot{W}^{1}_{mp}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to itself, are continuous mappings from $W^{m}_{p}\cap \dot{W}^{1}_{mp}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to itself, for every integer $m\geq 2$ and every real number $1\leq p<+\infty$. The same automatic continuity property holds for Sobolev spaces $W^m_p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $m\geq 2$ and $1\leq p<+\infty$.
Let H be a real (or complex) Hilbert space. Every nonnegative operator $L \in L(H)$ admits a unique nonnegative square root $R \in L(H)$, i.e., a nonnegative operator $R \in L(H)$ such that $R^{2}= L$. Let $GL^{+}_{S}(H)$ be the set of nonnegative isomorphisms in $L(H)$. First we will show that $GL^{+}_{S}(H)$ is a convex (real) Banach manifold. Denoting by $L^{1/2}$ the nonnegative square root of $L$. In [10], Richard Bouldin proves that $L^{1/2}$ depends continuously on $L$ (this proof is non-trivial). This result has several applications. For example, it is used to find the polar decomposit…
We show that an infinite dimensional Lie group in Milnor's sense has the strong Trotter property if it is locally $μ$-convex. This is a continuity condition imposed on the Lie group multiplication that generalizes the triangle inequality for locally convex vector spaces, and is equivalent to $C^0$-continuity of the evolution map on its domain. In particular, the result proven in this paper significantly extends the respective result obtained by Glöckner in the context of measurable regularity.
One proves that any everywhere defined constructive mapping from a complete metric space into a complete metric space which preserves the property of precompacity of subsets is locally uniformly continuous. This fact can be viewed as interpretation of L. E. J. Brower's fan theorem in terms of A. A. Markov's constructive analysis.
We extend Berge's Maximum Theorem to allow for incomplete preferences. We first provide a simple version of the Maximum Theorem for convex feasible sets and a fixed preference. Then, we show that if, in addition to the traditional continuity assumptions, a new continuity property for the domains of comparability holds, the limits of maximal elements along a sequence of decision problems are maximal elements in the limit problem. While this new continuity property for the domains of comparability is not generally necessary for optimality to be preserved by limits, we provide conditions under wh…
In this paper, we consider the structure of maximally monotone operators in Banach space whose domains have nonempty interior and we present new and explicit structure formulas for such operators. Along the way, we provide new proofs of the norm-to-weak$^{*}$ closedness and of property (Q) for these operators (as recently proven by Voisei). Various applications and limiting examples are given.
We combine aspects of the notions of finite decomposition complexity and asymptotic property C into a notion that we call finite APC-decomposition complexity. Any space with finite decomposition complexity has finite APC-decomposition complexity and any space with asymptotic property C has finite APC-decomposition complexity. Moreover, finite APC-decomposition complexity implies property A for metric spaces. We also show that finite APC-decomposition complexity is preserved by direct products of groups and spaces, amalgamated products of groups, and group extensions, among other constructions.
We establish a general superposition principle for curves of measures solving a continuity equation on metric spaces without any smooth structure nor underlying measure, representing them as marginals of measures concentrated on the solutions of the associated ODE defined by some algebra of observables. We relate this result with decomposition of acyclic normal currents in metric spaces. As an application, a slightly extended version of a probabilistic representation for absolutely continuous curves in Kantorovich-Wasserstein spaces, originally due to S. Lisini, is provided in the metric frame…
We introduce a new approach to absolute continuity of laws of Poisson functionals. It is based on the {\it energy image density} property for Dirichlet forms and on what we call {\it the lent particle method} which consists in adding a particle and taking it back after some calculation.
Broadly speaking, this paper is concerned with dual spaces of operator algebras. More precisely, we investigate the existence of what we call Lebesgue projections: central projections in the bidual of an operator algebra that detect the weak-$*$ continuous part of the dual space. Associated to any such projection is a Lebesgue decomposition of the dual space. We are particularly interested in Lebesgue projections in the context of inclusions of operator algebras. We show how their presence is intimately connected with an extension property for the inclusion reminiscent of a classical theorem o…
