A Banach space $X$ has the $2$-summing property if the norm of every linear operator from $X$ to a Hilbert space is equal to the $2$-summing norm of the operator. Up to a point, the theory of spaces which have this property is independent of the scalar field: the property is self-dual and any space with the property is a finite dimensional space of maximal distance to the Hilbert space of the same dimension. In the case of real scalars only the real line and real $\ell_\infty^2$ have the $2$-summing property. In the complex case there are more examples; e.g., all subspaces of complex $\ell_\infty^3$ and their duals.
In this paper we provide an abstract aproach to the study of classes of multiple summing multilinear operators between Banach spaces. The main purpose is unify the study of several known classes and results, for example multiple $(p, q_1,\dots, q_n)$-summing operators, multiple mixing $(s, q, p)$-summing operators and multiple strong $(s, q, p)$-mixing summing operators. We also define new class of multiple summing multilinear operator that are particular cases of our construction and, therefore, satisfy the results proved in the paper.
In the short note we prove that for every $0<p<1$, there exists an infinite dimensional closed linear subspace of $\mathcal{L}\left( \ell_{p};\ell_{p}\right) $ every nonzero element of which is non $(r,s)$-absolutely summing operator for the real numbers $r,s$ with $1\leq s\leq r<\infty$. This improve a result obtained in \cite{DanielT}.
Let $E$ and $F$ be complex Banach spaces, $U$ be an open subset of $E$ and $1\leq p\leq\infty$. We introduce and study the notion of a Cohen strongly $p$-summing holomorphic mapping from $U$ to $F$, a holomorphic version of a strongly $p$-summing linear operator. For such mappings, we establish both Pietsch domination/factorization theorems and analyse their linearizations from $\mathcal{G}^\infty(U)$ (the canonical predual of $\mathcal{H}^\infty(U)$) and their transpositions on $\mathcal{H}^\infty(U)$. Concerning the space $\mathcal{D}_p^{\mathcal{H}^\infty}(U,F)$ formed by such mappings and …
Let $1\le p\le q<\infty$ and let $X$ be a $p$-convex Banach function space over a $σ$-finite measure $μ$. We combine the structure of the spaces $L^p(μ)$ and $L^q(ξ)$ for constructing the new space $S_{X_p}^{\,q}(ξ)$, where $ξ$ is a probability Radon measure on a certain compact set associated to $X$. We show some of its properties, and the relevant fact that every $q$-summing operator $T$ defined on $X$ can be continuously (strongly) extended to $S_{X_p}^{\,q}(ξ)$. This result turns out to be a mixture of the Pietsch and Maurey-Rosenthal factorization theorems, which provide (strong) factoriz…
We construct a general framework that generates classes of multilinear operators between Banach spaces which encompasses, as particular cases, the several classes of summing type multilinear operators that have been studied individually in the literature. Summing operators by blocks in the isotropic and anisotropic cases are taken into account. The classes we create are shown to be Banach ideals of multilinear operators and applications to coherence and coincidence theorems are provided.
In this paper we prove coincidence results concerning spaces of absolutely summing multilinear mappings between Banach spaces. The nature of these results arises from two distinct approaches: the coincidence of two \textit{a priori} different classes of summing multilinear mappings and the summability of all multilinear mappings defined on products of Banach spaces. Optimal generalizations of known results are obtained. We also introduce and explore new techniques in the field, for example a technique to extend coincidence results for linear, bilinear and even trilinear mappings to general mul…
Given an infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ and a Banach space $Y$ with no finite cotype, we determine whether or not every continuous linear operator from $X$ to $Y$ is absolutely $(q;p)$-summing for almost all choices of $p$ and $q$, including the case $p=q$. If $X$ assumes its cotype, the problem is solved for all choices of $p$ and $q$. Applications to the theory of dominated multilinear mappings are also provided.
Generalizing classical results of the theory of absolutely summing operators, in this paper we characterize the duals of a quite large class of Banach operator ideals defined or characterized by the transformation of vector-valued sequences.
The main purpose of this paper is the study of a~new class of summing multilinear operators acting from the product of Banach lattices with some nontrivial lattice convexity. A~mixed Pietsch-Maurey-Rosenthal type factorization theorem for these operators is proved under weaker convexity requirements than the ones that are needed in the Maurey-Rosenthal factorization through products of $L^q$-spaces. A~by-product of our factorization is an extension of multilinear operators defined by a~$q$-concavity type property to a~product of special Banach function lattices which inherit some lattice-geome…
Cotype is used in this paper to prove new results concerning the existence of non-absolutely summing linear operators between Banach spaces. We derive consequences that extend/generalize/ complement some classic results. We also point out that some of our results are sharp.
We study the ideals of linear operators between Banach spaces determined by the transformation of vector-valued sequences involving the new sequence space introduced by Karn and Sinha \cite{karnsinha} and the classical spaces of absolutely, weakly and Cohen strongly summable sequences. As applications, we prove a new factorization theorem for absolutely summing operators and a contribution to the existence of infinite dimensional spaces formed by non-absolutely summing operators is given.
In this paper, we construct the abstract ideal of polynomials. We show this is an ideal of Banach and, in a second moment, we explore the question of the coherence and compatibility of the pair composed by the abstract ideals of polynomials and multilinear applications.
It is well known in Banach space theory that for a finite dimensional space $E$ there exists a constant $c_E$, such that for all sequences $(x_k)_k \subset E$ one has \[ \summ_k \noo x_k \rrm \kl c_E \pl \sup_{\eps_k \pm 1} \noo \summ_k \eps_k x_k \rrm \pl .\] Moreover, if $E$ is of dimension $n$ the constant $c_E$ ranges between $\sqrt{n}$ and $n$. This implies that absolute convergence and unconditional convergence only coincide in finite dimensional spaces. We will characterize Banach spaces $X$, where the constant $c_E \sim \sqrt{n}$ for all finite dimensional subspaces. More generally, we…
In this paper, we explore the concept of multilinear operators that are multiple almost summing and present a new concept of type and cotype of multilinear operators and investigate the conditions for this new concept to recover the original concept of type and type for multilinear operators. We also show that these classes are Banach multi-ideals and establish the coherence and compatibility of these classes with the generated homogeneous polynomials.
We prove a substantial extension of a well-known result due to Bennett and Carl: The inclusion of a 2-concave symmetric Banach sequence space E into l_2 is (E,1)-summing, i.e. for every unconditionally summable sequence (x_n) in E the scalar sequence (||x_n||_2) is contained in E. Various applications are given, e.g. to the theory of eigenvalue distribution of compact operators and approximation theory.
We prove when a Banach ideal of linear operators defined, or characterized, by the transformation of vector-valued sequences is maximal. Known results are recovered as particular cases and new information is obtained. To accomplish this task we study a tensor quasi-norm determined by the underlying sequence classes. The duality theory for these tensor quasi-norms is also developed.
In this paper we study absolutely summing mappings on Banach spaces by exploring the cotype of their domains and ranges. It is proved that every $n$% -linear mapping from $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$-spaces into $\mathbb{K}$ is $% (2;2,...,2,\infty)$-summing and also shown that every $n$-linear mapping from $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$-spaces into $F$ is $(q;2,...,2)$-summing whenever $F$ has cotype $q.$ We also give new examples of analytic summing mappings and polynomial and multilinear versions of a linear Extrapolation Theorem.
We investigate lineability/spaceability problems within the setting of multilinear summing operators on quasi-Banach sequence spaces. Furthermore, we deal with the contemporary geometric notions of pointwise-lineability and $(α,β)$-lineability. Among other results, we prove that the class of multilinear operators taking values on $\ell_q \, (0<q \leq \infty)$ that are absolutely but not multiple summing is pointwise $\mathfrak{c}$-spaceable when non-empty. Spaceability in other classes, such as Dunford-Pettis operators and multilinear operators on general summable scalar families, is also stud…
We introduce the notion of index of summability for pairs of Banach spaces; for Banach spaces E; F, this index plays the role of a kind of measure of how the m-homogeneous polynomials from E to F are far from being absolutely summing. In some cases the optimal index of summability is computed.
Let $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ be Banach spaces and let $U$ be a subspace of $\mathcal{L}(X^*,Y)$, the Banach space of all operators from $X^*$ to $Y$. An operator $S: U \to Z$ is said to be $(\ell^s_p,\ell_p)$-summing (where $1\leq p <\infty$) if there is a constant $K\geq 0$ such that $$ \Big( \sum_{i=1}^n \|S(T_i)\|_Z^p \Big)^{1/p} \le K \sup_{x^* \in B_{X^*}} \Big(\sum_{i=1}^n \|T_i(x^*)\|_Y^p\Big)^{1/p} $$ for every $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and every $T_1,\dots,T_n \in U$. In this paper we study this class of operators, introduced by Blasco and Signes as a natural generalization of the $(p,Y)$-summing ope…
The notion of a strongly summing sequence is introduced. Such a sequence is weak-Cauchy, a basis for its closed linear span, and has the crucial property that the dual of this span is not weakly sequentially complete. The main result is: Theorem. Every non-trivial weak-Cauchy sequence in a \RM(real or complex\RM) Banach space has either a strongly summing sequence or a convex block basis equivalent to the summing basis. (A weak-Cauchy sequence is called {\it non-trivial} if it is {\it non-weakly convergent}.) The following characterization of spaces containing $c_0$ is thus obtained, in the sp…
Unifying several directions of the development of the study of summing multilinear operators between Banach spaces, we construct a general framework that studies, under one single definition, multilinear operators that are summing with respect to sums taken over any number of indices, iterated and non-iterated sums (the isotropic and the anisotropic cases), sums over arbitrary blocks and over several different sequence norms. A large number of special classes of multilinear operators and of methods of generating classes of multilinear operators are recovered as particular instances. Ideal prop…
We relate the injectivity of the canonical map from $C(B_{E'})$ to $L_p(μ)$, where $μ$ is a regular Borel probability measure on the closed unit ball $B_{E'}$ of the dual $E'$ of a Banach space $E$ endowed with the weak* topology, to the existence of injective $p$-summing linear operators/$p$-dominated homogeneous polynomials defined on $E$ having $μ$ as a Pietsch measure. As an application we fill the gap in the proofs of some results of concerning Pietsch-type factorization of dominated polynomials.
Let $E_{1},...,E_{m},F$ be Banach spaces. The index of summability of $\left(E_{1}\times\cdots\times E_{m},F\right) $ is a kind of measure of how far the $m$-linear operators $T:E_{1}\times\cdots\times E_{m}\rightarrow F$ are from being multiple summing. In this paper we estimate the index of summability of several pairs of Banach spaces$.$
In this paper we extend the scope of three important results of the linear theory of absolutely summing operators. The first one was proved by Bu and Kranz in \cite{BK} and it asserts that a continuous linear operator between Banach spaces takes almost unconditionally summable sequences into Cohen strongly $q$-summable sequences for any $q\geq2$, whenever its adjoint is $p$-summing for some $p\geq1$. The second of them states that $p$-summing operators with hilbertian domain are Cohen strongly $q$-summing operators ($1<p,q<\infty$), this result is due to Bu \cite{Bu}. The third one is due to K…
In this work we discuss several ways to extend to the context of Banach spaces the notion of Hilbert-Schmidt operators: $p$-summing operators, $γ$-summing or $γ$-radonifying operators, weakly $*1$-nuclear operators and classes of operators defined via factorization properties. We introduce the class $PS_2(E; F)$ of pre-Hilbert-Schmidt operators as the class of all operators $u:E\to F$ such that $w\circ u \circ v$ is Hilbert-Schmidt for every bounded operator $v: H_1\to E$ and every bounded operator $w:F\to H_2$, where $H_1$ et $H_2$ are Hilbert spaces. Besides the trivial case where one of the…
Let $E$ be a Banach space that does not contain any copy of $\ell^1$ and $\A$ be a non commutative $C^*$-algebra. We prove that every absolutely summing operator from $\A$ into $E^*$ is compact, thus answering a question of Pełczynski. As application, we show that if $G$ is a compact metrizable abelian group and $Λ$ is a Riesz subset of its dual then every countably additive $\A^*$-valued measure with bounded variation and whose Fourier transform is supported by $Λ$ has relatively compact range. Extensions of the same result to symmetric spaces of measurable operators are also presented.
In the article is introduced a new class of Banach spaces that are called sub B-convex. Namely, a Banach space X is said to be B -convex if it may be represented as a direct sum l_1+ W, where W is B-convex. It will be shown that any separable sub B-convex Banach space X may be almost isometrically embedded in a separable Banach space G(X) of the same cotype as X, which has a series of properties. Namely, G(X) is an approximate envelope, i.e. any separable Banach space which is finitely representable in G(X) may be almost isometrically embedded into G(X); G(X)is almost isotropic; G(X) is existe…
Among other results we investigate $\left( α,β\right) $-lineability of the set of non-continuous $m$-linear operators defined between normed spaces as a subset of the space of all $m$-linear operators. We also give a partial answer to an open problem on the lineability of the set of non absolutely summing operators.
We prove the existence of free objects in certain subcategories of Banach lattices, including $p$-convex Banach lattices, Banach lattices with upper $p$-estimates, and AM-spaces. From this we immediately deduce that projectively universal objects exist in each of these subcategories, extending results of Leung, Li, Oikhberg and Tursi (\emph{Israel J.\ Math.}~2019). In the $p$-con\-vex and AM-space cases, we are able to explicitly identify the norms of the free Banach lattices, and we conclude by investigating the structure of these norms in connection with nonlinear $p$-summing maps.
A subsequence principle is obtained, characterizing Banach spaces containing $c_0$, in the spirit of the author's 1974 characterization of Banach spaces containing $\ell^1$. Definition: A sequence $(b_j)$ in a Banach space is called {\it strongly summing\/} (s.s.) if $(b_j)$ is a weak-Cauchy basic sequence so that whenever scalars $(c_j)$ satisfy $\sup_n \|\sum_{j=1}^n c_j b_j\| <\infty$, then $\sum c_j$ converges. A simple permanence property: if $(b_j)$ is an (s.s.) basis for a Banach space $B$ and $(b_j^*)$ are its biorthogonal functionals in $B^*$, then $(\sum_{j=1}^n b_j^*)_{n=1}^ \infty$…
Consider a Banach space valued measurable function $f$ and an operator $u$ from the space where {$f$} takes values. If $f $ is Pettis integrable, a classical result due to J. Diestel shows that composing it with $u$ gives a Bochner integrable function $u \circ f$ whenever $u$ is absolutely summing. In a previous work we have shown that a well-known interpolation technique for operator ideals allows to prove under some requirements that a composition of a $p$-Pettis integrable function with a $q$-summing operator provides an $r$-Bochner integrable function. In this paper a new abstract inclusio…
For $0<p<1,$ we prove that there is a $\mathfrak{c}$-dimensional subspace of $\mathcal{L}\left( \ell_{p},\ell_{p}\right) $ such that, except for the null vector, all of its vectors fail to be absolutely $(r,s)$-summing regardless of the real numbers $r,s$, with $1\leq s\leq r<\infty$. This extends a result proved by Maddox in 1987. Moreover, the result is sharp in the sense that it is not valid for $p\geq1.$
Let $1 \leq p <\infty$. A sequence $\lef x_n \rig$ in a Banach space $X$ is defined to be $p$-operator summable if for each $\lef f_n \rig \in l^{w^*}_p(X^*)$, we have $\lef \lef f_n(x_k)\rig_k \rig_n \in l^s_p(l_p)$. Every norm $p$-summable sequence in a Banach space is operator $p$-summable, while in its turn every operator $p$-summable sequence is weakly $p$-summable. An operator $T \in B(X, Y)$ is said to be $p$-limited if for every $\lef x_n \rig \in l_p^w(X)$, $\lef Tx_n \rig$ is operator $p$-summable. The set of all $p$-limited operators form a normed operator ideal. It is shown that ev…
We prove an abstract interpolation theorem which interpolates the (r,2)-summing and (s,2)-mixing norm of a fixed operator in the image and the range space. Combined with interpolation formulas for spaces of operators we obtain as an application the original Bennett-Carl inequalities for identities acting between Minkowski spaces l_u as well as their analogues for Schatten classes S_u. Furthermore, our techniques motivate a study of Bennett-Carl inequalities within a more general setting of symmetric Banach sequence spaces and unitary ideals.
Let $(Ω,Σ,μ)$ be a complete probability space, $X$ a Banach space and $1\leq p<\infty$. In this paper we discuss several aspects of $p$-Dunford integrable functions $f:Ω\to X$. Special attention is paid to the compactness of the Dunford operator of $f$. We also study the $p$-Bochner integrability of the composition $u\circ f:Ω\to Y$, where $u$ is a $p$-summing operator from $X$ to another Banach space $Y$. Finally, we also provide some tests of $p$-Dunford integrability by using $w^*$-thick subsets of $X^*$.
As is well known absolute convergence and unconditional convergence for series are equivalent only in finite dimensional Banach spaces. Replacing the classical notion of absolutely summing operators by the notion of 1 summing operators \[ \summ_k || Tx_k || \leq c || \summ_k e_k \otimes x_k ||_{\ell_1\otimes_{min}E}\] in the category of operator spaces, it turns out that there are quite different interesting examples of 1 summing operator spaces. Moreover, the eigenvalues of a composition $TS$ decreases of order $n^{\frac{1}{q}}$ for all operators $S$ factorizing completely through a commutati…
Let $X,Y$ and $Z$ be Banach spaces, and let $\prod_p(Y,Z) (1\leq p<\infty)$ denote the space of $p$-summing operators from $Y$ to $Z$. We show that, if $X$ is a {\it \$}$_\infty$-space, then a bounded linear operator $T: X\hat \otimes_εY\longrightarrow Z$ is 1-summing if and only if a naturally associated operator $T^#: X\longrightarrow \prod_1(Y,Z)$ is 1-summing. This result need not be true if $X$ is not a {\it \$}$_\infty$-space. For $p>1$, several examples are given with $X=C[0,1]$ to show that $T^#$ can be $p$-summing without $T$ being $p$-summing. Indeed, there is an operator $T$ on $C[0…
We define the frame potential for a Schauder frame on a finite dimensional Banach space as the square of the $2$-summing norm of the frame operator. As is the case for frames for Hilbert spaces, we prove that the frame potential can be used to characterize finite unit norm tight frames (FUNTFs) for finite dimensional Banach spaces. We prove the existence of FUNTFs for a variety of spaces, and in particular that every $n$-dimensional complex Banach space with a $1$-unconditional basis has a FUNTF of $N$ vectors for every $N\geq n$. However, many interesting results on FUNTFs and sums of rank on…
In this paper we first take a detail survey of the study of the Banach-Saks property of Banach spaces and then show the Banach-Saks property of the product spaces generated by a finite number of Banach spaces having the Banach-Saks property. A more general inequality for integrals of a class of composite functions is also given by using this property.
In addition to Pisier's counterexample of a non-accessible maximal Banach ideal, we will give a large class of maximal Banach ideals which {\it{are accessible}}. The first step is implied by the observation that a "good behaviour" of trace duality, which is canonically induced by conjugate operator ideals can be extended to adjoint Banach ideals, if and only if these adjoint ideals satisfy an accessibility condition (theorem 3.1). This observation leads in a natural way to a characterization of accessible injective Banach ideals, where we also recognize the appearance of the ideal of {\it{abso…
A famous result of S. Kwapień asserts that a linear operator from a Banach space to a Hilbert space is absolutely $1$-summing whenever its adjoint is absolutely $q$-summing for some $1\leq q<\infty$; this result was recently extended to Lipschitz operators by Chen and Zheng. In the present paper we show that Kwapień's and Chen--Zheng theorems hold in a very relaxed nonlinear environment, under weaker hypotheses. Even when restricted to the original linear case, our result generalizes Kwapień's theorem because it holds when the adjoint is just almost summing. In addition, a variant for $\mathca…
In this paper we prove a plenty of new results concerning summabililty properties of multilinear mappings between Banach spaces, such as an extension of Littlewood's 4/3 Theorem. Among other features, it is shown that every continuous n-linear form on the disc algebra or the Hardy space is (1;2,...,2)-summing, the role of the Littlewood-Orlicz property in the theory is established and the interplay with almost summing multilinear mappings is explored.
A classical result by J. Diestel establishes that the composition of a summing operator with a (strongly measurable) Pettis integrable function gives a Bochner integrable function. In this paper we show that a much more general result is possible regarding the improvement of the integrability of vector valued functions by the summability of the operator. After proving a general result, we center our attention in the particular case given by the $(p,σ)$-absolutely continuous operators, that allows to prove a lot of special results on integration improvement for selected cases of classical Banac…
We show that for any operator $T:l_\infty^N\to Y$, where $Y$ is a Banach space, that its cotype 2 constant, $K_2(T)$, is related to its $(2,1)$-summing norm, $π_{2,1}(T)$, by $K_2(T) \le c \log\log N π_{2,1}(T) $. Thus, we can show that there is an operator $T:C(K)\to Y$ that has cotype 2, but is not 2-summing.
We prove that a Banach space $E$ has the compact range property (CRP) if and only if for any given $C^*$-algebra $\cal A$, every absolutely summing operator from $\cal A$ into $E$ is compact.
A Banach space E is said to have Property (w) if every (bounded linear) operator from E into E' is weakly compact. We give some interesting examples of James type Banach spaces with Property (w). We also consider the passing of Property (w) from E to C(K,E).
A Banach space X is said to have the Tsirelson property if it does not contain subspaces that are isomorphic to l_{p}, p in [1,infty) or c_{0}. The article contains a quite simple method to producing Banach spaces with the Tsirelson property.
The aim of this note is to consider different notions for the Banach-Saks property in locally solid vector lattices as an extension for the known concepts of the Banach-Saks property in Banach lattices. We investigate relations between them; in particular, we shall characterize spaces in which, these notions agree.
Fixed a Banach operator ideal $\mathcal A$, we introduce and investigate two new approximation properties, which are strictly weaker than the bounded approximation property (BAP) for $\mathcal A$ of Lima, Lima and Oja (2010). We call them the weak BAP for $\mathcal A$ and the local BAP for $\mathcal A$, showing that the latter is in turn strictly weaker than the former. Under this framework, we address the question of approximation properties passing from dual spaces to underlying spaces. We relate the weak and local BAPs for $\mathcal A$ with approximation properties given by tensor norms and…
