The notion of a strongly summing sequence is introduced. Such a sequence is weak-Cauchy, a basis for its closed linear span, and has the crucial property that the dual of this span is not weakly sequentially complete. The main result is:
Theorem. Every non-trivial weak-Cauchy sequence in a \RM(real or complex\RM) Banach space has either a strongly summing sequence or a convex block basis equivalent to the summing basis.
(A weak-Cauchy sequence is called {\it non-trivial} if it is {\it non-weakly convergent}.) The following characterization of spaces containing $c_0$ is thus obtained, in the spirit of the author's 1974 subsequence principle.
Corollary 1. A Banach space $B$ contains no isomorph of $c_0$ if and only if every non-trivial weak-Cauchy sequence in $B$ has a strongly summing subsequence.
Combining the $c_0$-and $\ell^1$-theorems, one obtains
Corollary 2. If $B$ is a non-reflexive Banach space such that $X^*$ is weakly sequentially complete for all linear subspaces $X$ of $B$, then $c_0$ embeds in $B$.
Given a finite measure space $(Ω,Σ,μ)$, we show that any Banach space $X(μ)$ consisting of (equivalence classes of) real measurable functions defined on $Ω$ such that $f χ_A \in X(μ) $ and $ \|f χ_A \| \leq \|f\|, \, f \in X(μ), \ A \in Σ$, and having the subsequence property, is in fact an ideal of measurable functions and has an equivalent norm under which it is a Banach function space. As an application we characterize norms that are equivalent to a Banach function space norm.
Let $(x_n)$ be a sequence in a Banach space $X$ which does not converge in norm, and let $E$ be an isomorphically precisely norming set for $X$ such that \[ \sum_n |x^*(x_{n+1}-x_n)|< \infty, \; \forall x^* \in E. \qquad (*) \] Then there exists a subsequence of $(x_n)$ which spans an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space. It follows immediately from results of V. Fonf that the converse is also true: If a separable Banach space $Y$ is a separable isomorphically polyhedral then there exists a non norm convergent sequence $(x_n)$ which spans $Y$ and there exists an isomorphically precisely norm…
We characterize noncommutative symmetric Banach spaces for which every bounded sequence admits either a convergent subsequence, or a $2$-co-lacunary subsequence. This extends the classical characterization, due to Räbiger.
It is shown that every normalized weakly null sequence of length $κ_λ$ in a Banach space has a subsequence of length $λ$ which is an unconditional basic sequence; here $κ_λ$ is a large cardinal depending on a given infinite cardinal $λ$. Transfinite topological games on Banach spaces are analyzed which determine the existence of a long unconditional basic sequence. Then 'asymptotic disentanglement' condition in a transfinite setting is studied which ensures a winning strategy for the unconditional basic sequence builder in the above game. The following problem is investigated: When does a Mark…
The following dichotomy is established for a normalized weakly null sequence in a Banach space: Either every subsequence admits a convex block subsequence equivalent to the unit vector basis of c, the Banach space of null sequences under the supremum norm, or there exists a subsequence which is boundedly convexly complete. This result generalizes J. Elton's dichotomy on weakly null sequences.
We first include a result of the second author showing that the Banach space S is complementably minimal. We then show that every block sequence of the unit vector basis of S has a subsequence which spans a space isomorphic to its square. By the Pełczyński decomposition method it follows that every basic sequence in S which spans a space complemented in S has a subsequence which spans a space isomorphic to S (i.e. S is a subsequentially prime space).
A Banach space contains either a minimal subspace or a continuum of incomparable subspaces. General structure results for analytic equivalence relations are applied in the context of Banach spaces to show that if $E_0$ does not reduce to isomorphism of the subspaces of a space, in particular, if the subspaces of the space admit a classification up to isomorphism by real numbers, then any subspace with an unconditional basis is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and has an isomorphically homogeneous subsequence.
We study random unconditional convergence for a basis in a Banach space. The connections between this notion and classical unconditionality are explored. In particular, we analyze duality relations, reflexivity, uniqueness of these bases and existence of unconditional subsequences.
It is proved that if a Banach space $Y$ is a quotient of a Banach space having a shrinking unconditional basis, then every normalized weakly null sequence in $Y$ has an unconditional subsequence. The proof yields the corollary that every quotient of Schreier's space is $c_o$-saturated.
A subset $A$ of a Banach space is called Banach-Saks when every sequence in $A$ has a Ces{à}ro convergent subsequence. Our interest here focusses on the following problem: is the convex hull of a Banach-Saks set again Banach-Saks? By means of a combinatorial argument, we show that in general the answer is negative. However, sufficient conditions are given in order to obtain a positive result.
A subsequence principle is obtained, characterizing Banach spaces containing $c_0$, in the spirit of the author's 1974 characterization of Banach spaces containing $\ell^1$. Definition: A sequence $(b_j)$ in a Banach space is called {\it strongly summing\/} (s.s.) if $(b_j)$ is a weak-Cauchy basic sequence so that whenever scalars $(c_j)$ satisfy $\sup_n \|\sum_{j=1}^n c_j b_j\| <\infty$, then $\sum c_j$ converges. A simple permanence property: if $(b_j)$ is an (s.s.) basis for a Banach space $B$ and $(b_j^*)$ are its biorthogonal functionals in $B^*$, then $(\sum_{j=1}^n b_j^*)_{n=1}^ \infty$…
The purpose of this paper is to characterize weak supercyclicity for Hilbert-space contractions, which is shown to be equivalent to characterizing weak supercyclicity for unitary operators$.$ This is naturally motivated by an open question that asks whether every weakly supercyclic power bounded operator is weakly stable (which in turn is naturally motivated by a result that asserts that every supercyclic power bounded operator is strongly stable)$.$ Precisely, weakly supercyclicity is investigated in light of boundedly spaced subsequences as discussed in Lemma 3.1$.$ The main result in Theore…
We prove that there exist Banach spaces not containing $\ell_1$, failing the point of continuity property and satisfying that every semi-normalized basic sequence has a boundedly complete basic subsequence. This answers in the negative the problem of the Remark 2 in H. P. Rosenthal. "Boundedly complete weak-Cauchy sequences in Banach spaces with PCP." J. Funct. Anal. 253 (2007) 772-781.
A Banach space $X$ has \textit{property $(K)$}, whenever every weak* null sequence in the dual space admits a convex block subsequence $(f_{n})_{n=1}^\infty$ so that $\langle f_{n},x_{n}\rangle\to 0$ as $n\to \infty$ for every weakly null sequence $(x_{n})_{n=1}^\infty$ in $X$; $X$ has \textit{property $(μ^{s})$} if every weak$^{*}$ null sequence in $X^{*}$ admits a subsequence so that all of its subsequences are Cesàro convergent to $0$ with respect to the Mackey topology. Both property $(μ^{s})$ and reflexivity (or even the Grothendieck property) imply property $(K)$. In the present paper we…
We introduce UDSp-property (resp. UDTq-property) in Banach lattices as the property that every normalized disjoint sequence has a subsequence with an upper p-estimate (resp. lower q-estimate). In the case of rearrangement invariant spaces, the relationships with Boyd indices of the space are studied. Some applications of these properties are given to the high order smoothness of Banach lattices, in the sense of the existence of differentiable bump functions.
We study infinite asymptotic games in Banach spaces with an F.D.D. and prove that analytic games are determined by characterising precisely the conditions for the players to have winning strategies. These results are applied to characterise spaces embeddable into $\ell_p$ sums of finite dimensional spaces, extending results of Odell and Schlumprecht, and to study various notions of homogeneity of bases and Banach spaces. These results are related to questions of rapidity of subsequence extraction from normalised weakly null sequences.
We show that if a Banach lattice is projective, then every bounded sequence that can be mapped by a homomorphism onto the basis of $c_0$ must contain an $\ell_1$-subsequence. As a consequence, if Banach lattices $\ell_p$ or $FBL[E]$ are projective, then $p=1$ or $E$ has the Schur property, respectively. On the other hand, we show that $C(K)$ is projective whenever $K$ is an absolute neighbourhood retract, answering a question by de Pagter and Wickstead.
We prove that a separable Banach space $E$ does not contain a copy of the space $\co$ of null-sequences if and only if for every doubly power-bounded operator $T$ on $E$ and for every vector $x\in E$ the relative compactness of the sets $\{T^{n+m}x-T^nx: n\in \NN\}$ (for some/all $m\in\NN$, $m\geq 1$) and $\{T^nx:n\in \NN\}$ are equivalent. With the help of the Jacobs--de Leeuw--Glicksberg decomposition of strongly compact semigroups the case of (not necessarily invertible) power-bounded operators is also handled.
A Banach space $X$ is said to have property ($μ^s$) if every weak$^*$-null sequence in $X^*$ admits a subsequence such that all of its subsequences are Cesàro convergent to $0$ with respect to the Mackey topology. This is stronger than the so-called property (K) of Kwapień. We prove that property $(μ^s)$ holds for every subspace of a Banach space which is strongly generated by an operator with Banach-Saks adjoint (e.g. a strongly super weakly compactly generated space). The stability of property $(μ^s)$ under $\ell^p$-sums is discussed. For a family $\mathcal{A}$ of relatively weakly compact s…
Let $X$ be a Banach space and $Y \subseteq X$ be a closed subspace. We prove that if the quotient $X/Y$ is weakly Lindelöf determined or weak Asplund, then for every $w^*$-convergent sequence $(y_n^*)_{n\in \mathbb N}$ in $Y^*$ there exist a subsequence $(y_{n_k}^*)_{k\in \mathbb N}$ and a $w^*$-convergent sequence $(x_k^*)_{k\in \mathbb N}$ in $X^*$ such that $x_k^*|_Y=y_{n_k}^*$ for all $k\in \mathbb N$. As an application we obtain that $Y$ is Grothendieck whenever $X$ is Grothendieck and $X/Y$ is reflexive, which answers a question raised by González and Kania.
If a Banach space is saturated with basic sequences whose linear span embeds into the linear span of any subsequence, then it contains a minimal subspace. It follows that any Banach space is either ergodic or contains a minimal subspace. For a Banach space $X$ with an (unconditional) basis, topological 0-1 law type dichotomies are stated for block-subspaces of $X$ as well as for subspaces of $X$ with a successive FDD on its basis. A uniformity principle for properties of block-sequences, results about block-homogeneity, and a possible method to construct a Banach space with an unconditional ba…
We provide a generalization of two results of Knaust and Odell from \cite{KO2} and \cite{KO}. We prove that if $X$ is a Banach space and $(g_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is a right dominant Schauder basis such that every normalized, weakly null sequence in $X$ admits a subsequence dominated by a subsequence of $(g_n)_{n=1}^\infty$, then there exists a constant $C$ such that every normalized, weakly null sequence in $X$ admits a subsequence $C$-dominated by a subsequence of $(g_n)_{n=1}^\infty$. We also prove that if every spreading model generated by a normalized, weakly null sequence in $X$ is dominated …
Let ${\mathcal N}$ be a nest on a complex Banach space $X$ and let $\mbox{ Alg}{\mathcal N}$ be the associated nest algebra. We say that an operator $Z\in \mbox{ Alg}{\mathcal N}$ is an all-derivable point of $\mbox{ Alg}{\mathcal N}$ if every linear map $δ$ from $\mbox{ Alg}{\mathcal N}$ into itself derivable at $Z$ (i.e. $δ$ satisfies $δ(A)B+Aδ(B)=δ(Z)$ for any $A,B \in \mbox{ Alg}{\mathcal N}$ with $AB=Z$) is a derivation. In this paper, it is shown that every injective operator and every operator with dense range in $\mbox{Alg}{\mathcal N}$ are all-derivable points of $\mbox{Alg}{\mathcal …
We show that if an infinite-dimensional Banach space X has a symmetric basis then there exists a bounded, linear operator R : X --> X such that the set A = {x in X : ||R^n(x)|| --> infinity} is non-empty and nowhere dense in X. Moreover, if x in X\A then some subsequence of (R^n(x)) converges weakly to x. This answers in the negative a recent conjecture of Prajitura. The result can be extended to any Banach space containing an infinite-dimensional, complemented subspace with a symmetric basis; in particular, all 'classical' Banach spaces admit such an operator.
We study the lattice structure of the family of weakly compact subsets of the unit ball $B_X$ of a separable Banach space $X$, equipped with the inclusion relation (this structure is denoted by $\mathcal{K}(B_X)$) and also with the parametrized family of almost inclusion relations $K \subseteq L+εB_X$, where $ε>0$ (this structure is denoted by $\mathcal{AK}(B_X)$). Tukey equivalence between partially ordered sets and a suitable extension to deal with $\mathcal{AK}(B_X)$ are used. Assuming the axiom of analytic determinacy, we prove that separable Banach spaces fall into four categories, namely…
We prove that if $(v_i)$ is a normalized basic sequence and X is a Banach space such that every normalized weakly null sequence in X has a subsequence that is dominated by $(v_i)$, then there exists a uniform constant $C\geq1$ such that every normalized weakly null sequence in X has a subsequence that is C-dominated by $(v_i)$. This extends a result of Knaust and Odell, who proved this for the cases in which $(v_i)$ is the standard basis for $\ell_p$ or $c_0$.
Let $\cal M$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra equipped with a distinguished faithful, normal, semi-finite trace $τ$. We introduce the notion of equi-integrability in non-commutative spaces and show that if a rearrangement invariant quasi-Banach function space $E$ on the positive semi-axis is $α$-convex with constant 1 and satisfies a non-trivial lower $q$-estimate with constant 1, then the corresponding non-commutative space of measurable operators $E({\cal M}, τ)$ has the following property: every bounded sequence in $E({\cal M}, τ)$ has a subsequence that splits into a $E$-equi-integrabl…
We present a reflexive Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}$ which is Hereditarily Indecomposable and satisfies the following properties. In every subspace $Y$ of $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}$ there exists a weakly null normalized sequence $\{y_n\}_n$, such that every subsymmetric sequence $\{z_n\}_n$ is isomorphically generated as a spreading model of a subsequence of $\{y_n\}_n$. Also, in every block subspace $Y$ of $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}$ there exists a seminormalized block sequence $\{z_n\}$ and $T:\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}\rightarrow\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{usm}}}$ an i…
The main result of the paper shows that, for 1<p and 1<=q, a linear operator T from l_p to l_q attains its norm if, and only if, there exists a not weakly null maximizing sequence for T (counterexamples can be easily constructed when p=1). For 1<p (and q different from p), as a consequence of the previous result we show that any not weakly null maximizing sequence for a norm attaining operator T from l_p to l_q has a norm-convergent subsequence (and this result is sharp in the sense that it is not valid if p=q). We also investigate lineability of the sets of norm-attaining and non-norm attaini…
In this survey, we present several results related to characterizing the surjective isometries on Banach sequence spaces. Our survey includes full proofs of these characterizations for the classical spaces as well as more recent results for combinatorial Banach spaces and Tsirelson-type spaces. Along the way, we pose many open problems related to the structure of the group of surjective isometries and characterizations of the group of surjective isometries for various Banach spaces.
We introduce an ordinal index which characterizes weak compactness of operators between Banach spaces. We study when classes consisting of operators having bounded index form a closed ideal, the distinctness of the classes, and the descriptive set theoretic properties of this index.
We characterize Hilbert spaces in the class of all Banach spaces using Fourier transform of vector-valued functions over the field $Q_p$ of $p$-adic numbers. Precisely, Banach space $X$ is isomorphic to a Hilbert one if and only if Fourier transform $F: L_2(Q_p,X)\to L_2(Q_p,X)$ in space of functions, which are square-integrable in Bochner sense and take value in $X$, is a bounded operator.
The notion of $α$-large families of finite subsets of an infinite set is defined for every countable ordinal number $α$, extending the known notion of large families. The definition of the $α$-large families is based on the transfinite hierarchy of the Schreier families $\mathcal{S}_α, α<ω_1$. We prove the existence of such families on the cardinal number $2^{\aleph_0}$ and we study their properties. As an application, based on those families we construct a reflexive space $\mathfrak{X}_{2^{\aleph_0}}^α$, $α<ω_1$ with density the continuum, such that every bounded non norm convergent sequence …
A Banach space $X$ is said to have property (K) if every $w^*$-convergent sequence in $X^*$ admits a convex block subsequence which converges with respect to the Mackey topology. We study the connection of this property with strongly weakly compactly generated Banach spaces and its stability under subspaces, quotients and $\ell^p$-sums. We extend a result of Frankiewicz and Plebanek by proving that property (K) is preserved by $\ell^1$-sums of less than $\mathfrak{p}$ summands. Without any cardinality restriction, we show that property (K) is stable under $\ell^p$-sums for $1<p<\infty$.
It is shown that Jamison sequences, introduced in 2007 by Badea and Grivaux ([C. Badea and S. Grivaux, Unimodular eigenvalues, uniformly distributed sequences and linear dynamics, Adv. Math. 211 (2007), no. 2, 766--793]), arise naturally in the study of topological groups with no small subgroups, of Banach or normed algebra elements whose powers are close to identity along subsequences, and in characterizations of (self-adjoint) positive operators by the accretiveness of some of their powers. The common core of these results is a description of those sequences for which non-identity elements i…
We study multiplication operators on the weighted Banach spaces of an infinite tree. We characterize the bounded and the compact operators, as well as determine the operator norm. In addition, we determine the spectrum of the bounded multiplication operators and characterize the isometries. Finally, we study the multiplication operators between the weighted Banach spaces and the Lipschitz space by characterizing the bounded and the compact operators, determine estimates on the operator norm, and show there are no isometries.
Inspired by subsequential ergodic theorems, we study the validity of Wiener's lemma and the extremal behavior of a measure $μ$ on the unit circle via the behavior of its Fourier coefficients $\hatμ(k_n)$ along subsequences $(k_n)$. We focus on arithmetic subsequences such as polynomials, primes and polynomials of primes, and also discuss connections to rigidity sequences, return times sequences and strongly sweeping out sequences as well as measures on $\mathbb{R}$. We also present consequences for orbits of operators and of $C_0$-semigroups on Hilbert and Banach spaces extending the results o…
We consider a normalized basis in a Banach space with the following property: any normalized block sequence of the basis has a subsequence equivalent to the basis. We show that under uniformity or other natural assumptions, a basis with this property is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ or $\ell_p$. We also address an analogous problem for spreading models.
It is known that there exists a Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis $(e_i)_{i=1}^{\infty}$ which does not admit $\ell_p$ as the model space obtained by a finite chain of sequences such that each element is a spreading model of a block subsequence of the previous element, starting from a block subsequence of $(e_i)_{i=1}^{\infty}$. We prove that $X$ has the stronger property of not admitting $\ell_p$ via a finite chain consisting of block asymptotic models. This is related to a question posed by L. Halbeisen and E. Odell for the special case of block generated asymptotic models. Also, we sho…
We define and study asymptotically symmetric Banach spaces (a.s.) and its variations: weakly a.s. (w.a.s.) and weakly normalized a.s. (w.n.a.s.). If X is a.s. then all spreading models of X are uniformly symmetric. We show that the converse fails. We also show that w.a.s. and w.n.a.s. are not equivalent properties and that Schlumprecht's space S fails to be w.n.a.s. We show that if X is separable and has the property that every normalized weakly null sequence in X has a subsequence equivalent to the unit vector basis of c_0 then X is w.a.s.. We obtain an analogous result if c_0 is replaced by …
A recent result of Freeman, Odell, Sari, and Zheng states that whenever a separable Banach space not containing $\ell_1$ has the property that all asymptotic models generated by weakly null sequences are equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ then the space is Asymptotic $c_0$. We show that if we replace $c_0$ with $\ell_1$ then this result is no longer true. Moreover, a stronger result of B. Maurey - H. P. Rosenthal type is presented, namely, there exists a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis admitting $\ell_1$ as a unique asymptotic model whereas any subsequence of the b…
Motivated by the equivalent definition of a continuous operator between Banach spaces in terms of weakly null nets, we introduce unbounded continuous operators by replacing weak convergence with the unbounded absolutely weak convergence ( $uaw$-convergence) in the definition of a continuous operator between Banach lattices. We characterize order continuous Banach lattices and reflexive Banach lattices in terms of these spaces of operators. Moreover, motivated by characterizing of a reflexive Banach lattice in terms of unbounded absolutely weakly Cauchy sequences, we consider pre-unbounded oper…
A well-known application of the Ramsey Theorem in the Banach Space Theory is the proof of the fact that every normalized basic sequence has a subsequence which generates a spreading model (the Brunel-Sucheston Theorem). Based on this application, as an intermediate step, we can talk about the notion of $(k,\varepsilon)-$oscillation stable sequence, which will be described and analyzed more generally in this article. Indeed, we introduce the notion $((\mathcal{B}_i)_{i=1}^k,\varepsilon)-$block oscillation stable sequence where $(\mathcal{B}_i)_{i=1}^k$ is a finite sequence of barriers and using…
We define the ($w^\ast$-) boundedness property and the ($w^\ast$-) surjectivity property for sets in normed spaces. We show that these properties are pairwise equivalent in complete normed spaces by characterizing them in terms of a category-like property called ($w^\ast$-) thickness. We give examples of interesting sets having or not having these properties. In particular, we prove that the tensor product of two $w^\ast$-thick sets in $\Xastast$ and $\Yast$ is a $w^\ast$-thick subset in $L(X,Y)^\ast$ and obtain as a concequense that the set $w^\ast -exp\:B_{K(l_2)^\ast}$ is $w^\ast$-thick.
We characterize the weak-star point of continuity property for subspaces of dual spaces with separable predual and we deduce that the weak-star point of continuity property is determined by subspaces with a Schauder basis in the natural setting of dual spaces of separable Banach spaces. As a consequence of the above characterization we get that a dual space satisfies the Radon-Nikodym property if, and only if, every seminormalized topologically weak-star null tree has a boundedly complete branch, which improves some results in \cite{DF} obtained for the separable case. Also, as a consequence o…
Using the hierarchy of weakly null sequences introduced by Argyros, Merkourakis, and Tsarpalias, we introduce two new families of operator classes. The first family simultaneously generalizes the completely continuous operators and the weak Banach-Saks operators. The second family generalizes the class $\mathfrak{DP}$. We study the distinctness of these classes, and prove that each class is an operator ideal. We also investigate the properties possessed by each class, such as injectivity, surjectivity, and identification of the dual class. We produce a number of examples, including the higher …
Given a set $B$ of operators between subspaces of $L_p$ spaces, we characterize the operators between subspaces of $L_p$ spaces that remain bounded on the $X$-valued $L_p$ space for every Banach space on which elements of the original class $B$ are bounded. This is a form of the bipolar theorem for a duality between the class of Banach spaces and the class of operators between subspaces of $L_p$ spaces, essentially introduced by Pisier. The methods we introduce allow us to recover also the other direction --characterizing the bipolar of a set of Banach spaces--, which had been obtained by Hern…
A Banach lattice E is called p-disjointly homogeneous, 1< p< infty, when every sequence of pairwise disjoint normalized elements in E has a subsequence equivalent to the unit vector basis of l_p. Employing methods from interpolation theory, we clarify which rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces on [0,1] are p-disjointly homogeneous. In particular, for every 1<p< infty and any increasing concave function f on [0,1], which is not equivalent neither 1 nor t, there exists a p-disjointly homogeneous r.i. space with the fundamental function f. Moreover, in the class of all interpolation r.i. spaces …
Let $X$ be a Banach space with an unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition $(E_n)$. We consider the general problem of characterizing conditions under which one can construct an unconditional basis for $X$ by forming an unconditional basis for each $E_n.$ For example, we show that if $\sup \dim E_n<\infty$ and $X$ has Gordon-Lewis local unconditional structure then $X$ has an unconditional basis of this type. We also give an example of a non-Hilbertian space $X$ with the property that whenever $Y$ is a closed subspace of $X$ with a UFDD $(E_n)$ such that $\sup\dim E_n<\infty$ th…
A bounded subset $M$ of a Banach space $X$ is said to be $\varepsilon$-weakly precompact, for a given $\varepsilon\geq 0$, if every sequence $(x_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ in $M$ admits a subsequence $(x_{n_k})_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ such that $$ \limsup_{k\to \infty}x^*(x_{n_k})-\liminf_{k\to\infty}x^*(x_{n_k}) \leq \varepsilon $$ for all $x^*\in B_{X^*}$. In this paper we discuss several aspects of $\varepsilon$-weakly precompact sets. On the one hand, we give quantitative versions of the following known results: (a) the absolutely convex hull of a weakly precompact set is weakly precompact (Stegall)…
Cocompactness is a property of embeddings between two Banach spaces, similar to but weaker than compactness, defined relative to some non-compact group of bijective isometries. In presence of a cocompact embedding, bounded sequences (in the domain space) have subsequences that can be represented as a sum of a well-structured "bubble decomposition" (or defect of compactness) plus a remainder vanishing in the target space. This note is an exposition of different proofs of cocompactness for Sobolev-type embeddings, which employ methods of classical PDE, potential theory, and harmonic analysis.
