The Banach space S is complementably minimal and subsequentially prime

We first include a result of the second author showing that the Banach space S is complementably minimal. We then show that every block sequence of the unit vector basis of S has a subsequence which spans a space isomorphic to its square. By the Pełczyński decomposition method it follows that every basic sequence in S which spans a space complemented in S has a subsequence which spans a space isomorphic to S (i.e. S is a subsequentially prime space).

Isometric uniqueness of a complementably universal Banach space for Schauder decompositions

We present an isometric version of the complementably universal Banach space $\mathbb{P}$ with a Schauder decomposition. The space $\mathbb{P}$ is isomorphic to Pełczyński's space with a universal basis as well as to Kadec' complementably universal space with the bounded approximation property.

The cofinal property of the Reflexive Indecomposable Banach spaces

It is shown that every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive Hereditarily Indecomposable space, which yields that every separable reflexive Banach is isomorphic to a subspace of a reflexive Indecomposable space. Furthermore, every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive complementably $\ell_p$ saturated space with $1<p<\infty$ and of a $c_0$ saturated space.

Non-ergodic Banach spaces are near Hilbert

We prove that a non ergodic Banach space must be near Hilbert. In particular, $\ell_p$ ($2<p<\infty$) is ergodic. This reinforces the conjecture that $\ell_2$ is the only non ergodic Banach space. As an application of our criterion for ergodicity, we prove that there is no separable Banach space which is complementably universal for the class of all subspaces of $\ell_p$, for $1\leq p <2$. This solves a question left open by W. B. Johnson and A. Szankowski in 1976.

Minimality properties of Tsirelson type spaces

In this paper, we study minimality properties of partly modified mixed Tsirelson spaces. A Banach space with a normalized basis (e_k) is said to be subsequentially minimal if for every normalized block basis (x_k) of (e_k), there is a further block (y_k) of (x_k) such that (y_k) is equivalent to a subsequence of (e_k). Ergodic Banach Spaces

We show that any Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or a minimal subspace. We define an ergodic Banach space $X$ as a space such that $E_0$ Borel reduces to isomorphism on the set of subspaces of $X$, and show that every Banach space is either ergodic or contains a subspace with an unconditional basis $ which is complementably universal for the family of its block-subspaces. On the bounded approximation property on subspaces of $\ell_p$ when $0<p<1$ and related issues

This paper studies the bounded approximation property (BAP) in quasi Banach spaces. In the first part of the paper we show that the kernel of any surjective operator $\ell_p\to X$ has the BAP when $X$ has it and $0<p\leq 1$, which is an analogue of the corresponding result of Lusky for Banach spaces. We then obtain and study nonlocally convex versions of the Kadec-Pełczyński-Wojtaszczyk complementably universal spaces for Banach spaces with the BAP.

On Garling sequence spaces

The aim of this paper is to introduce and investigate a new class of separable Banach spaces modeled after an example of Garling from 1968. For each $1\leqslant p<\infty$ and each nonincreasing weight $\textbf{w}\in c_0\setminus\ell_1$ we exhibit an $\ell_p$-saturated, complementably homogeneous, and uniformly subprojective Banach space $g(\textbf{w},p)$. Subspaces of rearrangement-invariant spaces

We prove a number of results concerning the embedding of a Banach lattice $X$ into an r.i. space $Y$. For example we show that if $Y$ is an r.i. space on $[0,\infty)$ which is $p$-convex for some $p>2$ and has nontrivial concavity then any Banach lattice $X$ which is $r$-convex for some $r>2$ and embeds into $Y$ must embed as a sublattice. Banach spaces without minimal subspaces

We prove three new dichotomies for Banach spaces à la W.T. Gowers' dichotomies. The three dichotomies characterise respectively the spaces having no minimal subspaces, having no subsequentially minimal basic sequences, and having no subspaces crudely finitely representable in all of their subspaces. Garling sequence spaces

By generalizing a construction of Garling, for each $1\leqslant p<\infty$ and each normalized, nonincreasing sequence of positive numbers $w\in c_0\setminus\ell_1$ we exhibit an $\ell_p$-saturated, complementably homogeneous Banach space $g(w,p)$ related to the Lorentz sequence space $d(w,p)$.
