A subsequence principle is obtained, characterizing Banach spaces containing $c_0$, in the spirit of the author's 1974 characterization of Banach spaces containing $\ell^1$.
Definition: A sequence $(b_j)$ in a Banach space is called {\it strongly summing\/} (s.s.) if $(b_j)$ is a weak-Cauchy basic sequence so that whenever scalars $(c_j)$ satisfy $\sup_n \|\sum_{j=1}^n c_j b_j\| <\infty$, then $\sum c_j$ converges.
A simple permanence property: if $(b_j)$ is an (s.s.) basis for a Banach space $B$ and $(b_j^*)$ are its biorthogonal functionals in $B^*$, then $(\sum_{j=1}^n b_j^*)_{n=1}^ \infty$ is a non-trivial weak-Cauchy sequence in $B^*$; hence $B^*$ fails to be weakly sequentially complete. (A weak-Cauchy sequence is called {\it non-trivial\/} if it is {\it non-weakly convergent\/}.)
Theorem. Every non-trivial weak-Cauchy sequence in a (real or complex) Banach space has either an {\rm (s.s.)} subsequence, or a convex block basis equivalent to the summing basis.
Remark : The two alternatives of the Theorem are easily seen to be mutually exclusive.
Corollary 1. A Banach space $B$ contains no isomorph of $c_0$ if and only if every non-trivial weak-Cauchy sequence in $B$ has an {\rm (s.s.)} subsequence.
Combining the $c_0$ and $\ell^1$ Theorems, we obtain
Corollary 2. If $B$ is a non-reflexive Banach space such that $X^*$ is weakly sequentially complete for all linear subspaces $X$ of $B$, then $c_0$ embeds in $X$; in fact, $B$ has property~$(u)$.
Several new characterizations of Banach spaces containing a subspace isomorphic to $\ell^1$, are obtained. These are applied to the question of when $\ell^1$ embeds in the injective tensor product of two Banach spaces.
The class of countably intersected families of sets is defined. For any such family we define a Banach space not containing $\ell^{1}(\NN )$. Thus we obtain counterexamples to certain questions related to the heredity problem for W.C.G. Banach spaces. Among them we give a subspace of a W.C.G. Banach space not containing $\ell^{1}(\NN )$ and not being itself a W.C.G. space.
We prove that a Hilbert space frame $\fti$ contains a Riesz basis if every subfamily $\ftj , J \subseteq I ,$ is a frame for its closed span. Secondly we give a new characterization of Banach spaces which do not have any subspace isomorphic to $c_0$. This result immediately leads to an improvement of a recent theorem of Holub concerning frames consisting of a Riesz basis plus finitely many elements.
In this supplement to [GJ1], [GJ3], we give an intrinsic characterization of (bounded, linear) operators on Banach lattices which factor through Banach lattices not containing a copy of $c_0$ which complements the characterization of [GJ1], [GJ3] that an operator admits such a factorization if and only if it can be written as the product of two operators neither of which preserves a copy of $c_0$. The intrinsic characterization is that the restriction of the second adjoint of the operator to the ideal generated by the lattice in its bidual does not preserve a copy of $c_0$. This property of an…
We prove that a separable Banach space $E$ does not contain a copy of the space $\co$ of null-sequences if and only if for every doubly power-bounded operator $T$ on $E$ and for every vector $x\in E$ the relative compactness of the sets $\{T^{n+m}x-T^nx: n\in \NN\}$ (for some/all $m\in\NN$, $m\geq 1$) and $\{T^nx:n\in \NN\}$ are equivalent. With the help of the Jacobs--de Leeuw--Glicksberg decomposition of strongly compact semigroups the case of (not necessarily invertible) power-bounded operators is also handled.
In 1989, G. Godefroy proved that a Banach space contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if it can be equivalently renormed to be octahedral. It is known that octahedral norms can be characterized by means of covering the unit sphere by a finite number of balls. This observation allows us to connect the theory of octahedral norms with ball-covering properties of Banach spaces introduced by L. Cheng in 2006. Following this idea, we extend G. Godefroy's result to higher cardinalities. We prove that, for an infinite cardinal $κ$, a Banach space $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_…
A recent result of T.~Abrahamsen, P.~Hájek and S.~Troyanski states that a separable Banach space is almost square if and only if there exists $h\in S_{X^{****}}$ such that $\|x+h\|=\max\{\|x\|,1\}$ for all $x\in X$. The proof passes through a sequential version of being almost square which we call being \textit{sequentially almost square}. In this article we study these conditions in the nonseparable setting. On one hand, we show that a Banach space $X$ contains a copy of $c_0$ if and only if there exists an equivalent renorming $| \cdot |$ on $X$ for which there exists $h\in S_{X^{****}}$ suc…
For a topological group G, we show that a compact metric G-space is tame if and only if it can be linearly represented on a separable Banach space which does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$ (we call such Banach spaces, Rosenthal spaces). With this goal in mind we study tame dynamical systems and their representations on Banach spaces.
A result of G. Godefroy asserts that a Banach space $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if there is an equivalent norm $|||\cdot|||$ such that, for every finite-dimensional subspace $Y$ of $X$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $x\in S_X$ so that $|||y+r x|||\geq (1-\varepsilon)(|||y|||+\vert r\vert)$ for every $y\in Y$ and every $r\in\mathbb R$. In this paper we generalize this result to larger cardinals, showing that if $κ$ is an uncountable cardinal then a Banach space $X$ contains a copy of $\ell_1(κ)$ if and only if there is an equivalent norm $|||\cdot|||$ on $X$…
We characterize those classes $\mathcal{C}$ of separable Banach spaces for which there exists a separable Banach space $Y$ not containing $\ell_1$ and such that every space in the class $\mathcal{C}$ is a quotient of $Y$.
We show that for every $1<n<\infty$, there exits a Banach space $X_n$ containing proximinal subspaces of codimension $n$ but no proximinal finite codimensional subspaces of higher codimension. Moreover, the set of norm-attaining functionals of $X_n$ contains $n$-dimensional subspaces, but no subspace of higher dimension. This gives a $n$-by-$n$ version of the solutions given by Read and Rmoutil to problems of Singer and Godefroy. We also study the existence of strongly proximinal subspaces of finite codimension, showing that for every $1<n<\infty$ and $1\leqslant k <n$, there is a Banach space…
We show that the classes of separable reflexive Banach spaces and of spaces with separable dual are strongly bounded. This gives a new proof of a recent result of E. Odell and Th. Schlumprecht, asserting that there exists a separable reflexive Banach space containing isomorphic copies of every separable uniformly convex Banach spaces.
We prove that there exist Banach spaces not containing $\ell_1$, failing the point of continuity property and satisfying that every semi-normalized basic sequence has a boundedly complete basic subsequence. This answers in the negative the problem of the Remark 2 in H. P. Rosenthal. "Boundedly complete weak-Cauchy sequences in Banach spaces with PCP." J. Funct. Anal. 253 (2007) 772-781.
We investigate for a bounded semigroup of linear operators $S$ on a Banach space $E$ and a vector $x \in E$, when relative compactness of $S(I-T)x$ for every $T \in S$ implies relative compactness of the orbit $Sx$. In particular, we derive characterizations of separable Banach spaces not containing $\mathrm{c}_0$ and of reflexivity of Banach spaces with a Schauder basis in terms of such compactness results.
The paper is devoted to two particular cases of the following general problem. Let $α$ and $β$ be two types of bases in Banach spaces. Let a Banach space $X$ has bases of both types and a subspace $M\subset X^*$ contains the sequence of biorthogonal functionals of some $α$-basis in $X$. Does $M$ contain a sequence of biorthogonal functionals of some $β$-basis in $X$? The following particular cases are considered: $(α, β)$=(Schauder bases, unconditional bases), $(α, β)$=(Nonlinear operational bases, linear operational bases). The paper contains an investigation of some of the spaces constructed…
In this paper, we study the descriptive complexity of some inevitable classes of Banach spaces. Precisely, as shown in [Go], every Banach space either contains a hereditarily indecomposable subspace or an unconditional basis, and, as shown in [FR], every Banach space either contains a minimal subspace or a continuously tight subspace. In these notes, we study the complexity of those inevitable classes as well as the complexity of containing a subspace in any of those classes.
The notion of a strongly summing sequence is introduced. Such a sequence is weak-Cauchy, a basis for its closed linear span, and has the crucial property that the dual of this span is not weakly sequentially complete. The main result is: Theorem. Every non-trivial weak-Cauchy sequence in a \RM(real or complex\RM) Banach space has either a strongly summing sequence or a convex block basis equivalent to the summing basis. (A weak-Cauchy sequence is called {\it non-trivial} if it is {\it non-weakly convergent}.) The following characterization of spaces containing $c_0$ is thus obtained, in the sp…
A nonempty closed convex bounded subset $C$ of a Banach space is said to have the weak approximate fixed point property if for every continuous map $f:C\to C$ there is a sequence $\{x_n\}$ in $C$ such that $x_n-f(x_n)$ converge weakly to 0. We prove in particular that $C$ has this property whenever it contains no sequence equivalent to the standard basis of $\ell_1$. As a byproduct we obtain a characterization of Banach spaces not containing $\ell_1$ in terms of the weak topology.
The present paper contributes to the ongoing programme of quantification of isomorphic Banach space theory focusing on Pełczyński's classical work on dual Banach spaces containing $L_{1}$ ($=L_{1}[0,1]$) and the Hagler--Stegall characterisation of dual spaces containing complemented copies of $L_{1}$. We prove the following quantitative version of the Hagler--Stegall theorem asserting that for a Banach space $X$ the following statements are equivalent: $\bullet$ $X$ contains almost isometric copies of $(\bigoplus_{n=1}^{\infty} \ell_{\infty}^{n})_{\ell_1}$, $\bullet$ for all $\varepsilon>0$, $…
Let (e_i) be a dictionary for a separable Banach space X. We consider the problem of approximation by linear combinations of dictionary elements with quantized coefficients drawn usually from a `finite alphabet'. We investigate several approximation properties of this type and connect them to the Banach space geometry of X. The existence of a total minimal system with one of these properties, namely the coefficient quantization property, is shown to be equivalent to X containing c_0.
We present a construction that enables one to find Banach spaces $X$ whose sets $NA(X)$ of norm attaining functionals do not contain two-dimensional subspaces and such that, consequently, $X$ does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than one, extending the results recently provided by Read and Rmoutil. Roughly speaking, we construct an equivalent renorming with the requested properties for every Banach space $X$ where the set $NA(X)$ for the original norm is not "too large". The construction can be applied to every Banach space containing $c_0$ and having a countable…
We show that every Banach space containing isomorphic copies of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball has diameter 2 and, however, its unit ball still contains convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small, which improves in a optimal way the known results about the size of this kind of subsets in Banach spaces.
A well known argument of James yields that if a Banach space $X$ contains $\ell_1^n$'s uniformly then $X$ contains $\ell_1^n$'s almost isometrically. In the first half of the paper we extend this idea to the ordinal $\ell_1$-indices of Bourgain. In the second half we use our results to calculate the $\ell_1$-index of certain Banach spaces. Furthermore we show that the $\ell_1$-index of a separable Banach space not containing $\ell_1$ must be of the form $ω^α$ for some countable ordinal $α$.
We study the unknown differences between the size of slices and relatively weakly open subsets of the unit ball in Banach spaces. We show that every Banach space containing isomorphic copies of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that every slice of its unit ball has diameter 2 and satisfying that its unit ball contains nonempty relatively weakly open subsets with diameter arbitrarily small, which answers an open problem and stresses the differences of diameter between slices and relatively weakly open subsets of the unit ball in Banach spaces.
We construct Zachary space in $\R^\infty$ and find that this is a Banach space of functions of bounded mean oscillation with order $p, 1\leq p \leq \infty$ containing the function of bounded mean oscillation $BMO[\R_I^\infty]$ as a dense continuous embedding. As an application of $\R_I^\infty$ we construction $\mcB,$ where $\mcB $ is separable Banach space and finally we construct $\mcZ^p[\mcB]$.
We introduce and study two notions of entropy in a Banach space X with a normalized Schauder basis . The geometric entropy E(A) of a subset A of X is defined to be the infimum of radii of compact bricks containing A. We obtain several compactness characterizations for bricks (Theorem 3.7) useful for main results. We also obtain sufficient conditions on a set in a Hilbert space to have finite unconditional entropy. For Banach spaces without a Schauder basis we offer another entropy, called the Auerbach entropy. Finally, we pose some open problems.
We show that finite dimensional Banach spaces fail to be uniformly non locally almost square. Moreover, we construct an equivalent almost square bidual norm on $\ell_\infty.$ As a consequence we get that every dual Banach space containing $c_0$ has an equivalent almost square dual norm. Finally we characterize separable real almost square spaces in terms of their position in their fourth duals.
In the present note we give two explicit constructions (based on a retractional argument) of a Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$, over certain uniformly discrete metric spaces $N$. The first one applies to every net $N$ in a finite dimensional Banach space, leading to the basis constant independent of the dimension. The second one applies to grids in Banach spaces with an FDD. As a corollary, we obtain a retractional Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$ over a net $N$ in every Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis containing a copy of $c_0$, …
We study the relation between octahedral norms, Daugavet property and the size of convex combinations of slices in Banach spaces. We prove that the norm of an arbitrary Banach space is octahedral if, and only if, every convex combination of $w^*$-slices in the dual unit ball has diameter 2, which answer an open question. As a consequence we get that the Banach spaces with the Daugavet property and its dual spaces have octahedral norms. Also, we show that for every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ and for every $\varepsilon >0$ there is an equivalent norm so that every convex combinat…
In this work, we define a new class of fractional analytic functions containing functional parameters in the open unit disk. By employing this class, we introduce two types of fractional operators, differential and integral. The fractional differential operator is considered to be in the sense of Ruscheweyh differential operator, while the fractional integral operator is in the sense of Noor integral. The boundedness and compactness in a complex Banach space are discussed. Other studies are illustrated in the sequel.
The construction of the free Banach lattice generated by a real Banach space is extended to the complex setting. It is shown that for every complex Banach space $E$ there is a complex Banach lattice $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ containing a linear isometric copy of $E$ and satisfying the following universal property: for every complex Banach lattice $X_{\mathbb C}$, every operator $T:E\rightarrow X_{\mathbb C}$ admits a unique lattice homomorphic extension $\hat{T}:FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]\rightarrow X_{\mathbb C}$ with $\|\hat{T}\|=\|T\|$. The free complex Banach lattice $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ is shown to ha…
We prove that every Banach space containing a subspace isomorphic to $\co$ fails the fixed point property. The proof is based on an amalgamation approach involving a suitable combination of known results and techniques, including James's distortion theorem, Ramsey's combinatorial theorem, Brunel-Sucheston spreading model techniques and Dowling, Lennard and Turett's fixed point methodology employed in their characterization of weak compactness in $\co$.
The aim of this note is to complement and extend some recent results on Whitley's indices of thinness and thickness in three main directions. Firstly, we investigate both the indices when forming $\ell_p$-sums of Banach spaces, and obtain formulas which show that they behave rather differently. Secondly, we consider the relation of the indices of the space and a subspace. Finally, every Banach space $X$ containing a copy of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that in the new norm $c_0$ is an M-ideal in $X$ and both the thickness and thinness index of $X$ equal 1.
The main results of the paper: {\bf (1)} The dual Banach space $X^*$ contains a linear subspace $A\subset X^*$ such that the set $A^{(1)}$ of all limits of weak$^*$ convergent bounded nets in $A$ is a proper norm-dense subset of $X^*$ if and only if $X$ is a non-quasi-reflexive Banach space containing an infinite-dimensional subspace with separable dual. {\bf (2)} Let $X$ be a non-reflexive Banach space. Then there exists a convex subset $A\subset X^*$ such that $A^{(1)}\neq {\bar{A}\,}^*$ (the latter denotes the weak$^*$ closure of $A$). {\bf (3)} Let $X$ be a quasi-reflexive Banach space and…
We obtain the following characterization of Hilbert spaces. Let $E$ be a Banach space whose unit sphere $S$ has a hyperplane of symmetry. Then $E$ is a Hilbert space iff any of the following two conditions is fulfilled: a) the isometry group ${\rm Iso}\, E$ of $E$ has a dense orbit in S; b) the identity component $G_0$ of the group ${\rm Iso}\, E$ endowed with the strong operator topology acts topologically irreducible on $E$. Some related results on infinite dimentional Coxeter groups generated by isometric reflexions are given which allow to analyse the structure of isometry groups containin…
Let B(X) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space X with dim X greater than 3. In this paper, we characterize the forms of surjective linear maps on B(X) which preserve the dimension of the vector space containing of all fixed points of operators, whenever X is a fifinite dimensional Banach space. Moreover, we characterize the forms of linear maps on B(X) which preserve the vector space containing of all fixed points of operators.
If $X$ is a closed subspace of a Banach space $L$ which embeds into a Banach lattice not containing $\ell_\infty^n$'s uniformly and $L/X$ contains $\ell_\infty^n$'s uniformly, then $X$ cannot have local unconditional structure in the sense of Gordon-Lewis (GL-{\sl l.u.st.}).
If $Q$ is a surjection from $L^1(μ)$, $μ$ $σ$-finite, onto a Banach space containing $c_0$ then (*) $\ker Q$ is uncomplemented in its second dual. If $Q$ is a surjection from an ${\cal L}_1$-space onto a Banach space containing uniformly $\ell_n^\infty$ ($n=1,2,\dots$) then (**) there exists a bounded linear operator from $\ker Q$ into a Hilbert space which is not 2-absolutely summing. Let $S$ be an infinite Sidon set in the dual group $Γ$ of a compact abelian group $G$. Then $L^1_{\tilde{S}}(G)=\{f\in L^1(G): \hat{f}(γ)=0$ for $γ\in S\}$ satisfies (*) and (**) hence $L^1_{\tilde{S}}(G)$ is no…
We prove that every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ can be equivalently renormed so that its bidual space is octahedral, which answers, in the separable case, a question by Godefroy in 1989. As a direct consequence, we obtain that every dual Banach space, with a separable predual, failing to be strongly regular (that is, without convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small for some closed, convex and bounded subset) can be equivalently renormed with a dual norm to satisfy the strong diameter two property (that is, such that every convex combination of slices in its …
In the present paper we introduce and study the Lipschitz retractional structure of metric spaces. This topic was motivated by the analogous projectional structure of Banach spaces, a topic that has been thoroughly investigated. The more general metric setting fits well with the currently active theory of Lipschitz free spaces and spaces of Lipschitz functions. Among our applications we show that the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(X)$ is a Plichko space whenever $X$ is a Plichko Banach space. Our main results include two examples of metric spaces. The first one $M$ contains two points $\{0,…
Previous examples of non-type (D) maximal monotone operators were restricted to $\ell^1$, $L^1$, and Banach spaces containing isometriccopies of these spaces. This fact led to the conjecture that non-type (D) operators were restricted to this class of Banach spaces. We present a linear non-type (D) operator in $c_0$.
The notion of retro Banach frame with the help of b-linear functional in n-Banach spaces is being presented. Some properties related to the construction of new retro Banach frame in n-Banach space have been studied. In n-Banach spaces, some perturbation results of retro Banach frame have been discussed. Finally, we give a condition in which finite sum of retro Banach frames is a retro Banach frame in n-Banach space.
In this paper we first take a detail survey of the study of the Banach-Saks property of Banach spaces and then show the Banach-Saks property of the product spaces generated by a finite number of Banach spaces having the Banach-Saks property. A more general inequality for integrals of a class of composite functions is also given by using this property.
We present a new proof of Zippin's Embedding Theorem, that every separable reflexive Banach space embeds into one with shrinking and boundedly complete basis, and every Banach space with a separable dual embeds into one with a shrinking basis. This new proof leads to improved versions of other embedding results.
We single out and study a natural class of Banach spaces -- almost square Banach spaces. In an almost square space we can find, given a finite set $x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_N$ in the unit sphere, a unit vector $y$ such that $\|x_i-y\|$ is almost one. These spaces have duals that are octahedral and finite convex combinations of slices of the unit ball of an almost square space have diameter 2. We provide several examples and characterizations of almost square spaces. We prove that non-reflexive spaces which are M-ideals in their biduals are almost square. We show that every separable space containing a…
The free Banach lattice over a Banach space is introduced and analyzed. This generalizes the concept of free Banach lattice over a set of generators, and allows us to study the Nakano property and the density character of non-degenerate intervals on these spaces, answering some recent questions of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. Moreover, an example of a Banach lattice which is weakly compactly generated as a lattice but not as a Banach space is exhibited, thus answering a question of J. Diestel.
Our aim in this paper is to present a new type of the modular space. This space contains the classical modular space. There are some mappings that do not have contractive condition in the usual modular space but become contraction in this new space.
We show that the dual of every infinite-dimensional Lipschitz-free Banach space contains an isometric copy of $\ell_\infty$ and that it is often the case that a Lipschitz-free Banach space contains a $1$-complemented subspace isometric to $\ell_1$. Even though we do not know whether the latter is true for every infinite-dimensional Lipschitz-free Banach space, we show that the space is never rotund. Further, in the last section we survey the relations between "isometric embedding of~$\ell_\infty$ into the dual" and "containing as good copy of~$\ell_1$ as possible" in a general Banach space.
EP Banach space operators and EP Banach algebra elements are characterized using different kinds of factorizations. The results obtained generalize well-known characterizations of EP matrices, EP Hilbert space operators and EP $C^*$-algebra elements. Furthermore, new results that hold in these contexts are presented.
Several characterizations of EP and normal Moore-Penrose invertible Banach algebra elements will be considered. The Banach space operator case will be also studied. The results of the present article will extend well known facts obtained in the frames of matrices and Hilbert space operators.
We refine Amitsur's theory of radicals in complete lattices and apply the obtained results to the theory of radicals in the lattices of subspaces of Banach spaces and in the lattices of ideals of Banach and C*-algebras and of Banach Lie algebras.
In this note we show that every Banach space $X$ not containing $\ell_1^n$ uniformly and with unconditional basis contains an arbitrarily distortable subspace.
Let $(M,d)$ be a bounded countable metric space and $c>0$ a constant, such that $d(x,y)+d(y,z)-d(x,z) \ge c$, for any pairwise distinct points $x,y,z$ of $M$. For such metric spaces we prove that they can be isometrically embedded into any Banach space containing an isomorphic copy of $\ell_\infty$.
The main concern of this note is the Moore-Penrose inverse in the context of Banach spaces and algebras. Especially attention will be given to a particular class of elements with the aforementioned inverse, namely EP Banach space operators and Banach algebra elements, which will be studied and characterized extending well-known results obtained in the frame of Hilbert space operators and $C^*$-algebra elements.
For a Banach space $X$ we shall denote the set of all closed subspaces of $X$ by $G(X)$. In some kinds of problems it turned out to be useful to endow $G(X)$ with a topology. The main purpose of the present paper is to survey results on two the most common topologies on $G(X)$.
Let $X$ be a Banach space. We prove that, for a large class of Banach or quasi-Banach spaces $E$ of $X$-valued sequences, the sets $E-\bigcup _{q\inΓ}\ell_{q}(X)$, where $Γ$ is any subset of $(0,\infty]$, and $E-c_{0}(X)$ contain closed infinite-dimensional subspaces of $E$ (if non-empty, of course). This result is applied in several particular cases and it is also shown that the same technique can be used to improve a result on the existence of spaces formed by norm-attaining linear operators.
