In the present paper we introduce and study the Lipschitz retractional structure of metric spaces. This topic was motivated by the analogous projectional structure of Banach spaces, a topic that has been thoroughly investigated. The more general metric setting fits well with the currently active theory of Lipschitz free spaces and spaces of Lipschitz functions. Among our applications we show that the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(X)$ is a Plichko space whenever $X$ is a Plichko Banach space. Our main results include two examples of metric spaces. The first one $M$ contains two points $\{0,1\}$ such that no separable subset of $M$ containing these points is a Lipschitz retract of $M$. The second example fails the analogous property for arbitrary infinite density. Finally, we introduce the metric version of the concept of locally complemented Banach subspace, and prove some metric analogues to the linear theory.
In the present paper we prove that a necessary condition for a Banach space $X$ to admit a generating compact Lipschitz retract $K$, which satisfies an additional mild assumption on its shape, is that $X$ enjoys the Bounded Approximation Property. This is a partial solution to a question raised by Godefroy and Ozawa.
If a Banach-space operator has a complemented range, then its normed-space adjoint has a complemented kernel and the converse holds on a reflexive Banach space. It is also shown when complemented kernel for an operator is equivalent to complemented range for its normed-space adjoint. This is applied to compact operators and to compact perturbations. In particular, compact perturbations of semi-Fredholm operators have complemented range and kernel for both the perturbed operator and its normed-space adjoint
In our note we show the very close connection between the existence of a Finite Dimensional Decomposition (FDD for short) for a separable Banach space $X$ and the existence of a Lipschitz retraction of $X$ onto a small (in a certain precise sense) generating convex and compact subset $K$ of $X$. In one direction, if $X$ admits an FDD then we construct a Lipschitz retraction onto a small generating convex and compact set $K$. On the other hand, we prove that if $X$ admits a small generating compact Lipschitz retract then $X$ has the $π$-property. We note that it is still unknown if the $π$-prop…
In the present note we give two explicit constructions (based on a retractional argument) of a Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$, over certain uniformly discrete metric spaces $N$. The first one applies to every net $N$ in a finite dimensional Banach space, leading to the basis constant independent of the dimension. The second one applies to grids in Banach spaces with an FDD. As a corollary, we obtain a retractional Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$ over a net $N$ in every Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis containing a copy of $c_0$, …
For Banach spaces X and Y, we establish a natural bijection between preduals of Y and preduals of L(X,Y) that respect the right L(X)-module structure. If X is reflexive, it follows that there is a unique predual making L(X) into a dual Banach algebra. This removes the condition that X have the approximation property in a result of Daws. We further establish a natural bijection between projections that complement Y in its bidual and L(X)-linear projections that complement L(X,Y) in its bidual. It follows that Y is complemented in its bidual if and only if L(X,Y) is (either as a module or as a B…
In this paper, two main results concerning uniformly continuous retractions are proved. First, an $α$-Hölder retraction from any separable Banach space onto a compact convex subset whose closed linear span is the whole space is constructed for every positive $α<1$. This constitutes a positive solution to a Hölder version of a question raised by Godefroy and Ozawa. In fact, compact convex sets are found to be absolute $α$-Hölder retracts under certain assumption of flatness. Second, we provide an example of a strictly convex Banach space $X$ arbitrarily close to $\ell_2$ (for the Banach Mazur d…
We investigate the geometry of $C(K,X)$ and $\ell_{\infty}(X)$ spaces through complemented subspaces of the form $\left(\bigoplus_{i\in \varGamma}X_i\right)_{c_0}$. Concerning the geometry of $C(K,X)$ spaces we extend some results of D. Alspach and E. M. Galego from \cite{AlspachGalego}. On $\ell_{\infty}$-sums of Banach spaces we prove that if $\ell_{\infty}(X)$ has a complemented subspace isomorphic to $c_0(Y)$, then, for some $n \in \mathbb{N}$, $X^n$ has a subspace isomorphic to $c_0(Y)$. We further prove the following: (1) If $C(K)\sim c_0(C(K))$ and $C(L)\sim c_0(C(L))$ and $\ell_{\infty…

We study projectional skeletons and the Plichko property in Lipschitz-free spaces, relating these concepts to the geometry of the underlying metric space. Specifically, we identify a metric property that characterizes the Plichko property witnessed by Dirac measures in the associated Lipschitz-free space. We also show that the Lipschitz-free space of all $\mathbb{R}$-trees has the Plichko property witnessed by molecules, and define the concept of retractional trees to generalize this result to a bigger class of metric spaces. Finally, we show that no separable subspace of $\ell_\infty$ contain…
We use techniques of proof mining to extract a uniform rate of metastability (in the sense of Tao) for the strong convergence of approximants to fixed points of uniformly continuous pseudocontractive mappings in Banach spaces which are uniformly convex and uniformly smooth, i.e. a slightly restricted form of the classical result of Reich. This is made possible by the existence of a modulus of uniqueness specific to uniformly convex Banach spaces and by the arithmetization of the use of the limit superior. The metastable convergence can thus be proved in a system which has the same provably tot…
In this paper, we investigate homological properties of Banach algebras. We show that retractions Banach algebras preserve biprojectivity, contractibility and biflatness. We also prove that contractibility of second dual of a Banach algebra implies contractibility of the Banach algebra. For a Banach algebra $A$ with $Δ(A)\neq\emptyset$, let $\frak{F}(X, A)$ be one of the Banach algebras $C_b(X, A)$, $C_0(X, A)$, $\hbox{Lip}_α(X, A)$ or $\hbox{lip}_α(X, A)$. In the following, we study homological properties of Banach algebra $\frak{F}(X, A)$, especially contractibility of it. We prove that cont…
In the present note we give a construction (based on a retractional argument) of a Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$, over a net $N$ in any separable infinite dimensional $\mathcal{L}_\infty$-space $X$. In particular, this yields the first example of an infinite dimensional Banach space $X$ not containing $c_0$ with such a property.
We consider two questions on the geometry of Lipschitz free $p$-spaces $\mathcal F_p$, where $0<p\leq 1$, over subsets of finite-dimensional vector spaces. We solve an open problem and show that if $(\mathcal M, ρ)$ is an infinite doubling metric space (e.g., an infinite subset of an Euclidean space), then $\mathcal F_p (\mathcal M, ρ^α)\simeq\ell_p$ for every $α\in(0,1)$ and $0<p\leq 1$. An upper bound on the Banach-Mazur distance between the spaces $\mathcal F_p ([0, 1]^d, |\cdot|^α)$ and $\ell_p$ is given. Moreover, we tackle a question due to arXiv:2006.08018v1 [math.FA] and expound the ro…
