In this paper structure of infinite dimensional Banach spaces is studied by using an asymptotic approach based on stabilization at infinity of finite dimensional subspaces which appear everywhere far away. This leads to notions of asymptotic structures and asymptotic versions of a given Banach space. As an example of application of this approach, a class of asymptotic $l_p$-spaces is introduced and investigated in detail. Some properties of this class, as duality and complementation, are analogous to properties of classical $l_p$ spaces, although the latter is more ``regular'' than its classical counterpart; in contrast, the property exhibited in the uniqueness theorem is very different than for spaces $l_p$.
We study the existence of zeroes of mappings defined in Banach spaces. We obtain, in particular, an extension of the well-known Bolzano-Poincaré-Miranda theorem to infinite dimensional Banach spaces. We also establish a result regarding the existence of periodic solutions to differential equations posed in an arbitrary Banach space.
These notes concern the nonlinear geometry of Banach spaces, asymptotic uniform smoothness and several Banach-Saks-like properties. We study the existence of certain concentration inequalities in asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces as well as weakly sequentially continuous coarse (Lipschitz) embeddings into those spaces. Some results concerning the descriptive set theoretical complexity of those properties are also obtained. We finish the paper with a list of open problem.
A banach space X is a normed vector space, which is complete with respect to the metric induced by the norm. Given a bounded linear operator T acting on a banach space X, T is said to attain its norm if there is a unit vector z in X, such that the norm of Tz equals the norm of T. The existence of an infinite dimensional banach space X, in which each bounded linear operator acting on X attains its norm, is still undetermined. This question was posed by M.I. Ostrovskii at St. John's University. In this paper we show that if an infinite dimensional banach space is considered over GF(2), then it i…
For $1<p\le \infty$, we show the existence of a Banach space which is both injectively and surjectively universal for the class of all separable Banach spaces with an equivalent $p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth norm. We prove that this class is analytic complete in the class of separable Banach spaces. These results extend previous works by Kalton, Werner and Kurka in the case $p=\infty$.
For $1<p\leqslant \infty$, we study the complexity and the existence of universal spaces for two classes of separable Banach spaces, denoted $\textsf{A}_p$ and $\textsf{N}_p$, and related to asymptotic smoothness in Banach spaces. We show that each of these classes is Borel in the class of separable Banach spaces. Then we build small families of Banach spaces that are both injectively and surjectively universal for these classes. Finally, we prove the optimality of this universality result, by proving in particular that none of these classes admits a universal space.
Every new inner product in a Hilbert space is obtained from the original one by means of a unique positive operator$.$ The first part of the paper is a survey on applications of such a technique, including a characterization of similarity to isometries$.$ The second part focuses on Banach limits for dealing with power bounded operators. It is shown that if a power bounded operator for which the sequence of shifted Cesàro means converges (at least in the weak topology) uniformly in the shift parameter, then it has a Cesàro asymptotic limit coinciding with its $φ$-asymptotic limit for all Banach…
This paper is devoted to providing a unifying approach to the study of the uniqueness of unconditional bases, up to equivalence and permutation, of infinite direct sums of quasi-Banach spaces. Our new approach to this type of problem permits us to show that a wide class of vector-valued sequence spaces have a unique unconditional basis up to a permutation. In particular, solving a problem from [F. Albiac and C. Leránoz, Uniqueness of unconditional bases in nonlocally convex $\ell_1$-products, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 374 (2011), no. 2, 394--401] we show that if $X$ is quasi-Banach space with a str…
We study the invertibility nonsmooth maps between infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. To this end, we introduce an analogue of the notion of pseudo-Jacobian matrix of Jeyakumar and Luc in this infinite-dimensional setting. Using this, we obtain several inversion results. In particular, we give a version of the classical Hadamard integral condition for global invertibility in this context.
Let $(e_i)_i$ denote the unit vector basis of $\ell_p$, $1\leq p< \infty$, or $c_0$. We construct a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis that admits $(e_i)_i$ as a uniformly unique spreading model while it has no subspace with a unique asymptotic model, and hence it has no asymptotic-$\ell_p$ or $c_0$ subspace. This solves a problem of E. Odell. We also construct a space with a unique $\ell_1$ spreading model and no subspace with a uniformly unique $\ell_1$ spreading model. These results are achieved with the utilization of a new version of the method of saturation under constrai…
The Banach-Mazur problem, which asks if every infinite-dimensional Banach space has an infinite-dimensional separable quotient space, has remained unsolved for 85 years, but has been answered in the affirmative for special cases such as reflexive Banach spaces. It is also known that every infinite-dimensional non-normable Fréchet space has an infinite-dimensional separable quotient space, namely $\mathbb{R}^ω$. It is proved in this paper that every infinite-dimensional Fréchet space (including every infinite-dimensional Banach space), indeed every locally convex space which has a subspace whic…
The purpose of this paper is to lay the foundations for the study of the problem of when $\Ext^n(X, Y)=0$ in Banach/quasi-Banach spaces. We provide a number of examples of couples $X,Y$ so that $\Ext^n(X,Y)$ is (or is not ) $0$, including the first example of a separable Banach space $\mathscr K$ so that $\Ext^n(\mathscr K, \mathscr K)\neq 0$ for all $n\in \N$. Such space moreover provides the first example of Banach spaces with infinite homological dimension/codimension. We also show that the homological dimension/codimension of Hilbert spaces is infinite. The final section is devoted to comp…
Motivated by the study of dynamics of interacting spins for infinite particle systems, we consider an infinite family of first order differential equations in a Euclidean space, parameterized by elements $x$ of a fixed countable set. We suppose that the system is row-finite, that is, the right-hand side of the $x$-equation depends on a finite but in general unbounded number $n_x$ of variables. Under certain dissipativity-type conditions on the right-hand side and a bound on the growth of $n_x$, we show the existence of the solutions with infinite life-time, and prove that they live in an incre…
A subset of a Banach space is called equilateral if the distances between any two of its distinct elements are the same. It is proved that there exist non-separable Banach spaces (in fact of density continuum) with no infinite equilateral subset. These examples are strictly convex renormings of $\ell_1([0,1])$. A wider class of renormings of $\ell_1([0,1])$ which admit no uncountable equilateral sets is also considered.
We continue our investigation, from \cite{dh}, of the ring-theoretic infiniteness properties of ultrapowers of Banach algebras, studying in this paper the notion of being purely infinite. It is well known that a $C^*$-algebra is purely infinite if and only if any of its ultrapowers are. We find examples of Banach algebras, as algebras of operators on Banach spaces, which do have purely infinite ultrapowers. Our main contribution is the construction of a "Cuntz-like" Banach $*$-algebra which is purely infinite, but whose ultrapowers are not even simple, and hence not purely infinite. This algeb…
