A quojection (projective limit of Banach spaces with surjective linking mappings) without infinite dimensional Banach subspaces is constructed. This results answers a question posed by G.Metafune and V.B.Moscatelli.
We study properties of representing and absolutely representing systems of subspaces in Banach spaces. We also present sufficient conditions for the system of subspaces to be a representing system of subspaces.
We refine Amitsur's theory of radicals in complete lattices and apply the obtained results to the theory of radicals in the lattices of subspaces of Banach spaces and in the lattices of ideals of Banach and C*-algebras and of Banach Lie algebras.
For a Banach space $X$ we shall denote the set of all closed subspaces of $X$ by $G(X)$. In some kinds of problems it turned out to be useful to endow $G(X)$ with a topology. The main purpose of the present paper is to survey results on two the most common topologies on $G(X)$.
For every $n\geq 3,$ we construct an $n$-dimensional Banach space which is isometric to a subspace of $L_{1/2}$ but is not isometric to a subspace of $L_1.$ The isomorphic version of this problem (posed by S. Kwapien in 1969) is still open. Another example gives a Banach subspace of $L_{1/4}$ which does not embed isometrically in $L_{1/2}.$ Note that, from the isomorphic point of view, all the spaces $L_q$ with $q<1$ have the same Banach subspaces.
An absolutely representing family of subspaces is a natural generalization of an absolutely representing system of subspaces and absolutely representing system (of elements). We obtain necessary an (or) sufficient conditions for a family of subspaces to be an absolutely representing family of subspaces and study properties of absolutely representing families of subspaces in Banach spaces. As an example, we study families of subspaces spanned by exponents.
We investigate rich subspaces of $L_1$ and deduce an interpolation property of Sidon sets. We also present examples of rich separable subspaces of nonseparable Banach spaces and we study the Daugavet property of tensor products.
We analyse several examples of separable Banach spaces, some of them new, and relate them to several dichotomies obtained in the previous paper Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, by classifying them according to which side of the dichotomies they fall. This paper may be seen as a more empirical continuation of Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, in which our stress is on the study of examples for the new classes of Banach spaces considered in that work.
The main result: the dual of separable Banach space $X$ contains a total subspace which is not norming over any infinite dimensional subspace of $X$ if and only if $X$ has a nonquasireflexive quotient space with the strictly singular quotient mapping.
Let $\A$ be a semisimple unital commutative Banach algebra. We say that a Banach $\A$-module $M$ is nice if every proper closed submodule of $M$ is contained in a closed submodule of $M$ of codimension 1. We provide examples of nice and non-nice modules.
We show that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of an uncountable collection of Banach spaces is a locally convex direct sum of complemented subspaces of countable subsums. As a corollary we prove that a complemented subspace of a locally convex direct sum of arbitrary collection of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces is isomorphic to a locally convex direct sum of $\ell_{1}(Γ)$-spaces.
Let $X$ be a left introverted subspace of dual of a Banach algebra. We study $Z_t(X^*),$ the topological center of Banach algebra $X^*$. We fined the topological center of $(X\cA)^*$, when $\cA$ has a bounded right approximate identity and $\cA\subseteq X^*.$ So we introduce a new notation of amenability for a dual Banach algebra $\cal A$. A dual Banach algebra $\cal A$ is weakly Connes-amenable if the first $weak^*-$continuous cohomology group of $\cal A$ with coefficients in $\cal A$ is zero; i.e., $H^1_{w^*}(\cal A, \cal A)=\{o\}$. We study the weak Connes-amenability of some dual Banach al…
Given a Banach space $E$, we ask which closed subspaces may be realised as the kernel of a bounded operator $E \rightarrow E$. We prove some positive results which imply in particular that when $E$ is separable every closed subspace is a kernel. Moreover, we show that there exists a Banach space $E$ which contains a closed subspace that cannot be realized as the kernel of any bounded operator on $E$. This implies that the Banach algebra $\mathcal{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on $E$ fails to be weak*-topologically left Noetherian. The Banach space $E$ that we use is the dual of Wark's non-separa…
In this note we study Banach spaces of traces of real polynomials on $\mathbb R^n$ to compact subsets equipped with supremum norms from the point of view of Geometric Functional Analysis.
It is proved that there exist complemented subspaces of countable topological products (locally convex direct sums) of Banach spaces which cannot be represented as topological products (locally convex direct sums) of Banach spaces. (This is a revised version of the paper by the same name formerly contained in the file ostrovskiicompsbsp.atx.)
A space $X$ is said to be hereditarily indecomposable if no two (infinite dimensional) subspaces of $X$ are in a direct sum. In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a complex hereditarily indecomposable Banach space, then every operator from a subspace $Y$ of $X$ to $X$ is of the form $λI + S$, where $I$ is the inclusion map and $S$ is strictly singular.
Let $X$ be a Banach space, and $M,N$ be two closed subspaces of $X$. We present several necessary and sufficient conditions for the closedness of $M+N$ ($M+N$ is not necessarily direct sum).
We study the problem of the existence of a common algebraic complement for a pair of closed subspaces of a Banach space. We prove the following two characterizations: (1) The pairs of subspaces of a Banach space with a common complement coincide with those pairs which are isomorphic to a pair of graphs of bounded linear operators between two other Banach spaces. (2) The pairs of subspaces of a Banach space X with a common complement coincide with those pairs for which there exists an involution S on X exchanging the two subspaces, such that I+S is bounded from below on their union. Moreover we…
A Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis is defined to have the restricted quotient hereditarily indecomposable (QHI) property if $X/Y$ is hereditarily indecomposable (HI) for any infinite codimensional subspace $Y$ with a successive finite-dimensional decomposition on the basis of $X$. A reflexive space with the restricted QHI property is in particular HI, has HI dual, and is saturated with subspaces which are HI and have HI dual. The following dichotomy theorem is proved: any infinite dimensional Banach space contains a quotient of subspace which either has an unconditional basis, or has the…
We describe the spectrum of weighted $d$-isomorphisms of Banach lattices restricted on closed subspaces that are "rich" enough to preserve some "memory" of the order structure of the original lattice. The examples include (but are not limited to) weighted isometries of Hardy spaces on the polydisk and unit ball in $\mathds{C}^n$.
We give an intrinsic characterisation of the separable reflexive Banach spaces that embed into separable reflexive spaces with an unconditional basis all of whose normalised block sequences with the same growth rate are equivalent. This uses methods of E. Odell and T. Schlumprecht.
We show that, if $X$ is a closed subspace of a Banach space $E$ and $Z$ is a closed subspace of $E^*$ such that $Z$ is norming for $X$ and $X$ is total over $Z$ (as well as $X$ is norming for $Z$ and $Z$ is total over $X$), then $X$ and the pre-annihilator of $Z$ are complemented in $E$ whenever $Z$ is $w^*$-closed or $X$ is reflexive.
This paper deals with study of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of a linear operator to a subspace of operators defined between arbitrary Banach spaces. In case the domain space is reflexive and the subspace is finite dimensional we obtain a complete characterization. For arbitrary Banach spaces, we obtain the same under some additional conditions. For arbitrary Hilbert space $ \mathbb{H},$ we also study orthogonality to subspace of the space of linear operators $L(\mathbb{H}), $ both with respect to operator norm as well as numerical radius norm.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators in a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators in a real Hilbert space.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators on a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators on a real Hilbert space.
We prove that the dual or any quotient of a separable reflexive Banach space with the unconditional tree property has the unconditional tree property. Then we prove that a separable reflexive Banach space with the unconditional tree property embeds into a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis. This solves several long standing open problems. In particular, it yields that a quotient of a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional finite dimensional decomposition embeds into a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis.
We show that any Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or a minimal subspace. We define an ergodic Banach space $X$ as a space such that $E_0$ Borel reduces to isomorphism on the set of subspaces of $X$, and show that every Banach space is either ergodic or contains a subspace with an unconditional basis $ which is complementably universal for the family of its block-subspaces. We also use our methods to get uniformity results; for example, in combination with a result of B. Maurey, V. Milman and N. Tomczak-Jaegermann, we show that an unconditional basis of a Banach spa…
We show that for every $1<n<\infty$, there exits a Banach space $X_n$ containing proximinal subspaces of codimension $n$ but no proximinal finite codimensional subspaces of higher codimension. Moreover, the set of norm-attaining functionals of $X_n$ contains $n$-dimensional subspaces, but no subspace of higher dimension. This gives a $n$-by-$n$ version of the solutions given by Read and Rmoutil to problems of Singer and Godefroy. We also study the existence of strongly proximinal subspaces of finite codimension, showing that for every $1<n<\infty$ and $1\leqslant k <n$, there is a Banach space…
In article is constructed a wide couple of pairwice non-isomorphic separable superreflexive Banach spaces E that are subspace homogeneous. Their conjugates are quotient homogeneous. None of this couple neither isomorphic to its Cartesian square nor has the approximation property. At the same time, any such E is isomorphic to E+ E+ W for some Banach space W and, hence, solves the Schroeder - Bernstein problem.
In the first part of our paper, we show that $\ell_\infty$ has a dense linear subspace which admits an equivalent real analytic norm. As a corollary, every separable Banach space, as well as $\ell_1(\mathfrak{c})$, also has a dense linear subspace which admits an analytic renorming. By contrast, no dense subspace of $c_0(ω_1)$ admits an analytic norm. In the second part, we prove (solving in particular an open problem of Guirao, Montesinos, and Zizler) that every Banach space with a long unconditional Schauder basis contains a dense subspace that admits a $C^{\infty}$-smooth norm. Finally, we …
In this paper, we study the descriptive complexity of some inevitable classes of Banach spaces. Precisely, as shown in [Go], every Banach space either contains a hereditarily indecomposable subspace or an unconditional basis, and, as shown in [FR], every Banach space either contains a minimal subspace or a continuously tight subspace. In these notes, we study the complexity of those inevitable classes as well as the complexity of containing a subspace in any of those classes.
We prove that a Hilbert space frame $\fti$ contains a Riesz basis if every subfamily $\ftj , J \subseteq I ,$ is a frame for its closed span. Secondly we give a new characterization of Banach spaces which do not have any subspace isomorphic to $c_0$. This result immediately leads to an improvement of a recent theorem of Holub concerning frames consisting of a Riesz basis plus finitely many elements.
Given a Banach space X and a subspace Y, the pair (X,Y) is said to have the approximation property (AP) provided there is a net of finite rank bounded linear operators on X all of which leave the subspace Y invariant such that the net converges uniformly on compact subsets of X to the identity operator. The main result is an easy to apply dual formulation of this property. Applications are given to three space properties; in particular, if X has the approximation property and its subspace Y is script L-infinity, then X/Y has the approximation property.
To describe a set of functions, which forms a reflexive subspace B of the classical Banach space L a special function that characterizes their average integral growth is introduced. It is shown that this function essentially depends on the geometry of B. By the way, one question of la Vallee Poussin is answered. Also a short proof of the known result about the existence of an uncomplemented subspace isomorphic to the Hilbert space in every Lebesgue - Riesz space Lp (1<p<2) is obtained.
We prove that every lattice homomorphism acting on a Banach space $\mathcal{X}$ with the lattice structure given by an unconditional basis has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. In fact, it has a non-trivial closed invariant ideal, which is no longer true for every positive operator on such a space. Motivated by these later examples, we characterize tridiagonal positive operators without non-trivial closed invariant ideals on $\mathcal{X}$ extending to this context a result of Grivaux on the existence of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces for tridiagonal operators.
We study when diameter two properties pass down to subspaces. We obtain that the slice two property (respectively diameter two property, strong diameter two property) passes down from a Banach space $X$ to a subspace $Y$ whenever $Y$ is complemented by a norm one projection with finite-dimensional kernel (respectively the quotient $X/Y$ is finite dimensional, $X/Y$ is strongly regular). Also we study the same problem for dual properties of the above ones, as having octahedral, weakly octahedral or 2-rough norm.
It is an English translation of the paper originally published in Russian and Ukrainian in 1987. In the appendix of his book S.Banach introduced the following definition Let $X$ be a Banach space and $Γ$ be a subspace of the dual space $X^*$. The set of all limits of $w^{*}$-convergent sequences in $Γ$ is called the $w^*${\it -derived set} of $Γ$ and is denoted by $Γ_{(1)}$. For an ordinal $α$ the $w^{*}$-{\it derived set of order} $α$ is defined inductively by the equality: $$ Γ_{(α)}=\bigcup _{β<α}((Γ_{(β)})_{(1)}. $$
We prove results of existence of a solution (resp. existence and uniqness of a solution) for nonlinear differential equations of type $x'(t) +G(x,t) x(t) = F(x,t),$ in an abstract Banach subspace $X$ of the space of bounded real-valued continuous functions, satisfying some general and natural property. In our work, the functions $F$ and $G$ jointly depend on the variables $(x,t)\in X\times \R$. Several examples will be given, in various function spaces, to illustrate our results. The vector-valued framework is also considered.
Let $X$ be a Banach space. We introduce a formal approach which seems to be useful in the study of those properties of operators on $X$ which depend only on the norms of images of elements. This approach is applied to the Daugavet equation for norms of operators; in particular we develop a general theory of narrow operators and rich subspaces of $X$ previously studied in the context of the classical spaces $C(K)$ and $L_1(μ)$.
We first unify all notions of partial injectivity appearing in the literature ---(universal) separable injectivity, (universal) $\aleph$-injectivity --- in the notion of $(α, β)$-injectivity ($(α, β)_λ$-injectivity if the parameter $λ$ has to be specified). Then, extend the notion of space of universal disposition to space of universal $(α, β)$-disposition. Finally, we characterize the $1$-complemented subspaces of spaces of universal $(α, β)$-disposition as precisely the spaces $(α, β)_1$-injective.
Let $X$ be a Banach space and $Y \subseteq X$ be a closed subspace. We prove that if the quotient $X/Y$ is weakly Lindelöf determined or weak Asplund, then for every $w^*$-convergent sequence $(y_n^*)_{n\in \mathbb N}$ in $Y^*$ there exist a subsequence $(y_{n_k}^*)_{k\in \mathbb N}$ and a $w^*$-convergent sequence $(x_k^*)_{k\in \mathbb N}$ in $X^*$ such that $x_k^*|_Y=y_{n_k}^*$ for all $k\in \mathbb N$. As an application we obtain that $Y$ is Grothendieck whenever $X$ is Grothendieck and $X/Y$ is reflexive, which answers a question raised by González and Kania.
Let $X$ be a separable nonquasireflexive Banach space. Let $Y$ be a Banach space isomorphic to a subspace of $X^*$. The paper is devoted to the following questions: 1. Under what conditions does there exist an isomorphic embedding $T:Y\to X^*$ such that subspace $T(Y)\subset X^*$ is total? 2. If such embeddings exist, what are the possible orders of $T(Y)$? Here we need to recall some definitions. For a subset $M\subset X^*$ we denote the set of all limits of weak$^*$ convergent sequences in $M$ by $M_{(1)}$. Inductively, for ordinal number $α$ we let $$M_{(α)}=\cup_{β<α}(M_{(β)})_{(1)}.$$ The…
We construct for each $0<p\le 1$ an infinite collection of subspaces of $\ell_p$ that extend the example from [J. Lindenstrauss, On a certain subspace of $\ell_{1}$, Bull. Acad. Polon. Sci. Sér. Sci. Math. Astronom. Phys. 12 (1964), 539-542] of a subspace of $\ell_{1}$ with no unconditional basis. The structure of this new class of $p$-Banach spaces is analyzed and some applications to the general theory of $\mathcal{L}_{p}$-spaces for $0<p<1$ are provided. The introduction of these spaces serves the purpose to develop the theory of conditional quasi-greedy bases in $p$-Banach spaces for $p<1$…
This paper contains two improvements on a theorem of S. N. Bernstein for Banach spaces. We show that if $X$ is an arbitrary infinite-dimensional Banach space, $\{Y_n\}$ is a sequence of strictly nested subspaces of $ X$ and if $\{d_n\}$ is a non-increasing sequence of non-negative numbers tending to 0, then for any $c\in(0,1]$ we can find $x_{c} \in X$, such that the distance $ρ(x_{c}, Y_n)$ from $x_{c}$ to $Y_n$ satisfies $$ c d_n \leq ρ(x_{c},Y_n) \leq 4c d_n,~\mbox{for all $n\in\mathbb N$}. $$ We prove the above inequality by first improving Borodin (2006)'s result for Banach spaces by weak…
A new method of defining hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces is presented. This method provides a unified approach for constructing reflexive HI spaces and also HI spaces with no reflexive subspace. All the spaces presented here satisfy the property that the composition of any two strictly singular operators is a compact one. This yields the first known example of a Banach space with no reflexive subspace such that every operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace.
If Z is a quotient of a subspace of a separable Banach space X, and V is any separable Banach space, then there is a Banach couple (A_0,A_1) such that A_0 and A_1 are isometric to $X\oplus V$, and any intermediate space obtained using the real or complex interpolation method contains a complemented subspace isomorphic to Z. Thus many properties of Banach spaces, including having non-trivial cotype, having the Radon-Nikodym property, and having the analytic unconditional martingale difference sequence property, do not pass to intermediate spaces.
The complemented subspace problem asks, in general, which closed subspaces $M$ of a Banach space $X$ are complemented; i.e. there exists a closed subspace $N$ of $X$ such that $X=M\oplus N$? This problem is in the heart of the theory of Banach spaces and plays a key role in the development of the Banach space theory. Our aim is to investigate some results on complemented subspaces, to give a history of the subject, and to present some open problems.
For a large class of Banach spaces, a general construction of subspaces without local unconditional structure is presented. As an application it is shown that every Banach space of finite cotype contains either $l_2$ or a subspace without unconditional basis, which admits a Schauder basis. Some other interesting applications and corollaries follow.
