We prove that if X is a separable infinite dimensional Banach space then its isomorphism class has infinite diameter with respect to the Banach-Mazur distance. One step in the proof is to show that if X is elastic then X contains an isomorph of c_0. We call X elastic if for some K < infinity for every Banach space Y which embeds into X, the space Y is K-isomorphic to a subspace of X. We also prove that if X is a separable Banach space such that for some K < infinity every isomorph of X is K-elastic then X is finite dimensional.
Megrelishvili defines \emph{light groups} of isomorphisms of a Banach space as the groups on which the Weak and Strong Operator Topologies coincide, and proves that every bounded group of isomorphisms of Banach spaces with the Point of Continuity Property (PCP) is light. We investigate this concept for isomorphism groups $G$ of classical Banach spaces $X$ without the PCP, specially isometry groups, and relate it to the existence of $G$-invariant LUR or strictly convex renormings of $X$.
Ordered vector spaces E and F are said to be order isomorphic if there is a (not necessarily linear) bijection between them that preserves order. We investigate some situations under which an order isomorphism between two Banach lattices implies the persistence of some linear lattice structure. For instance, it is shown that if a Banach lattice E is order isomorphic to C(K) for some compact Hausdorff space K, then E is (linearly) isomorphic to C(K) as a Banach lattice. Similar results hold for Banach lattices order isomorphic to c_0, and for Banach lattices that contain a closed sublattice ord…
Let $X$ and $Y$ be compact Hausdorff spaces, and $E$, $F$ be Banach lattices. Let $C(X,E)$ denote the Banach lattice of all continuous $E$-valued functions on $X$ equipped with the pointwise ordering and the sup norm. We prove that if there exists a Riesz isomorphism $\mathnormalΦ: C(X,E)\to C(Y,F)$ such that $\mathnormalΦf$ is non-vanishing on $Y$ if and only if $f$ is non-vanishing on $X$, then $X$ is homeomorphic to $Y$, and $E$ is Riesz isomorphic to $F$. In this case, $\mathnormalΦ$ can be written as a weighted composition operator: $\mathnormalΦ f(y)=\mathnormalΠ(y)(f(φ(y)))$, where $φ$ …
We continue the investigation of the behaviour of diameter two properties in tensor products of Banach spaces. Our main result shows that the symmetric strong diameter two property is stable by taking projective tensor products. We also prove a result for the symmetric strong diameter two property for the injective tensor product.
The aim of this note is to provide several variants of the diameter two properties for Banach spaces. We study such properties looking for the abundance of diametral points, which holds in the setting of Banach spaces with the Daugavet property, for example, and we intro- duce the diametral diameter two properties in Banach spaces, showing for these new properties stability results, inheritance to subspaces and characterizations in terms of finite rank projections.
We prove that if $K$ and $L$ are compact spaces and $C(K)$ and $C(L)$ are isomorphic as Banach spaces then $K$ has a $π$-base consisting of open sets $U$ such that $\bar{U}$ is a continuous image of some compact subspace of $L$. This gives some information on isomorphic classes of the spaces of the form $C([0,1]^κ)$ and $C(K)$ where $K$ is Corson compact.
We prove that the diametral strong diameter 2 property of a Banach space (meaning that, in convex combinations of relatively weakly open subsets of its unit ball, every point has an "almost diametral" point) is stable under 1-sums, i.e., the direct sum of two spaces with the diametral strong diameter 2 property equipped with the 1-norm has again this property.
We demonstrate the result stated in the title, thus answering an open question asked by Julio Becerra Guerrero, Ginés López-Pérez and Abraham Rueda Zoca in J. Conv. Anal. \textbf{25}, no. 3 (2018).
It is proved that the relation of isomorphism between separable Banach spaces is a complete analytic equivalence relation, i.e., that any analytic equivalence relation Borel reduces to it. Thus, separable Banach spaces up to isomorphism provide complete invariants for a great number of mathematical structures up to their corresponding notion of isomorphism. The same is shown to hold for (1) complete separable metric spaces up to uniform homeomorphism, (2) separable Banach spaces up to Lipschitz isomorphism, and (3) up to (complemented) biembeddability, (4) Polish groups up to topological isomo…
We prove that, if Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ are $δ$-average rough, then their direct sum with respect to an absolute norm $N$ is $δ/N(1,1)$-average rough. In particular, for octahedral $X$ and $Y$ and for $p$ in $(1,\infty)$ the space $X\oplus_p Y$ is $2^{1-1/p}$-average rough, which is in general optimal. Another consequence is that for any $δ$ in $(1,2]$ there is a Banach space which is exactly $δ$-average rough. We give a complete characterization when an absolute sum of two Banach spaces is octahedral or has the strong diameter 2 property. However, among all of the absolute sums, the diame…
We show that the class of all Banach spaces which are isomorphic to $ c_{0} $ is a complete analytic set with respect to the Effros Borel structure of separable Banach spaces. The proof employs a recent Bourgain-Delbaen construction by Argyros, Gasparis and Motakis.
We study the unknown differences between the size of slices and relatively weakly open subsets of the unit ball in Banach spaces. We show that every Banach space containing isomorphic copies of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that every slice of its unit ball has diameter 2 and satisfying that its unit ball contains nonempty relatively weakly open subsets with diameter arbitrarily small, which answers an open problem and stresses the differences of diameter between slices and relatively weakly open subsets of the unit ball in Banach spaces.
We improve the known results about the complexity of the relation of isomorphism between separable Banach spaces up to Borel reducibility, and we achieve this using the classical spaces $c_0$, $\ell_p$ and $L_p$, $1 \leq p <2$. More precisely, we show that the relation $E_{K_σ}$ is Borel reducible to isomorphism and complemented biembeddability between subspaces of $c_0$ or $\ell_p, 1 \leq p <2$. We show that the relation $E_{K_σ} \otimes =^+$ is Borel reducible to isomorphism, complemented biembeddability, and Lipschitz equivalence between subspaces of $L_p, 1 \leq p <2$.
The geometric notion of huskability initiated and developed in [B3], [BR] ,[EW], [GM] was subsequently extensively studied in the context of dentability and Radon Nikodym Property in [GGMS]. In this work, we introduce a new geometric property of Banach space, the Ball Huskable Property ($BHP$), namely, the unit ball has relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter. We compare this property to two related geometric properties, $BSCSP$ namely, the unit ball has convex combination of slices of arbitrarily small diameter and $BDP$ namely, the closed unit ball has slices of arbitrar…
We study when diameter two properties pass down to subspaces. We obtain that the slice two property (respectively diameter two property, strong diameter two property) passes down from a Banach space $X$ to a subspace $Y$ whenever $Y$ is complemented by a norm one projection with finite-dimensional kernel (respectively the quotient $X/Y$ is finite dimensional, $X/Y$ is strongly regular). Also we study the same problem for dual properties of the above ones, as having octahedral, weakly octahedral or 2-rough norm.
Following a result of Hatori, Miura and Tagaki ([4]) we give here a spectral characterization of an isomorphism from a $C^\star$-algebra onto a Banach algebra. We then use this result to show that a $C^\star$-algebra $A$ is isomorphic to a Banach algebra $B$ if and only if there exists a surjective function $ϕ:A\rightarrow B$ satisfying (i) $σ\left(ϕ(x)ϕ(y)ϕ(z)\right)=σ\left(xyz\right)$ for all $x,y,z\in A$ (where $σ$ denotes the spectrum), and (ii) $ϕ$ is continuous at $\mathbf 1$. A simple example shows that (i) cannot be relaxed to products of two elements, as is the case with commutative B…
In this work we study three different versions of small diameter properties of the unit ball in a Banach space and its dual. The related concepts for all closed bounded convex sets of a Banach space was initiated and developed in \cite{B3}, \cite{BR} ,\cite{EW}, \cite{GM} was extensively studied in the context of dentability, huskability, Radon Nikodym Property and Krein Milman Property in \cite{GGMS}. We introduce the the Ball Huskable Property ($BHP$), namely, the unit ball has relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter. We compare this property to two related properties, $…
A Banach space has the ball huskable property ($BHP$) if the closed unit ball has weakly open sets of arbitrarily small diameter. We can analogously define $w^*$-$BHP$ in the dual space. In this short note, we study these properties in the context of ideals in Banach spaces. The notion of an ideal, was introduced by Godefroy, Kalton and Saphar. We show that if a Banach space $X$ has $BHP,$ then any $M$-ideal of $X$ also has $BHP.$ We further show that if $Y$ is an $M$-ideal of $X,$ then $Y^*$ has $w^*$-$BHP$ implies $X^*$ has $w^{*}$-$BHP.$ We use this result to prove that for a compact Hausdo…
We show that every Banach space containing isomorphic copies of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball has diameter 2 and, however, its unit ball still contains convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small, which improves in a optimal way the known results about the size of this kind of subsets in Banach spaces.
The goal of this paper is to study band-dominated operators on Banach spaces with Schauder basis with respect to uniformly locally finite metric spaces as well as the Banach algebras generated by them: the so called uniform Roe algebras. We investigate several kinds of isomorphisms between those Banach spaces (e.g., isomorphisms preserving norm, order, algebraic structure, etc) and prove several rigidity results on when a certain kind of isomorphism between the uniform Roe algebras implies that the base metric spaces are (bijectively) coarsely equivalent.
We prove that every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ can be equivalently renormed so that its bidual space is octahedral, which answers, in the separable case, a question by Godefroy in 1989. As a direct consequence, we obtain that every dual Banach space, with a separable predual, failing to be strongly regular (that is, without convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small for some closed, convex and bounded subset) can be equivalently renormed with a dual norm to satisfy the strong diameter two property (that is, such that every convex combination of slices in its …
A Banach space is locally almost square if, for every $y$ in its unit sphere, there exists a sequence $(x_n)$ in its unit sphere such that $\lim\|y\pm x_n\|=1$. A Banach space is weakly almost square if, in addition, we require the sequence $(x_n)$ to be weakly null. It is known that these two properties are distinct, so we aim to investigate if local almost squareness implies a weaker version of the latter property by replacing the sequence with a net. In order to achieve this result, we restrict ourselves to Banach lattices and introduce a strengthening of local almost squareness by requirin…
We study transfinite analogues of the symmetric strong diameter two property. We investigate the stability of these properties under $c_0$, $\ell_\infty$ sums and under projective tensor products. Moreover, we characterize Banach spaces of the form $C_0(X)$, where $X$ is a T$_4$ locally compact space, which posses these transfinite properties via cardinal functions over $X$. As an application, we are able to produce a variety of examples of Banach spaces which enjoy or fail these properties.
We show that the class of subspaces of c_0 is stable under Lipschitz isomorphisms. The main corollary is that any Banach space which is Lipschitz isomorphic to c_0 is linearly isomorphic to c_0.
There exists a real hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $X$ such that the quotient space $L(X)/S(X)$ by strictly singular operators is isomorphic to the complex field (resp. to the quaternionic division algebra). Up to isomorphism, the example with complex quotient space has exactly two complex structures, which are conjugate, totally incomparable, and both hereditarily indecomposable. So there exist two Banach spaces which are isometric as real spaces but totally incomparable as complex spaces. This extends results of J. Bourgain and S. Szarek from 1986. The quaternionic example, on the …
We study the relation between octahedral norms, Daugavet property and the size of convex combinations of slices in Banach spaces. We prove that the norm of an arbitrary Banach space is octahedral if, and only if, every convex combination of $w^*$-slices in the dual unit ball has diameter 2, which answer an open question. As a consequence we get that the Banach spaces with the Daugavet property and its dual spaces have octahedral norms. Also, we show that for every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ and for every $\varepsilon >0$ there is an equivalent norm so that every convex combinat…
We give two examples of polyhedral Banach spaces failing all the diameter two properties, showing that there is not any connection between polyhedrality and the diameter two properties.
A Banach space (or its norm) is said to have the diameter $2$ property (D$2$P in short) if every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of its closed unit ball has diameter $2$. We construct an equivalent norm on $L_1[0,1]$ which is weakly midpoint locally uniformly rotund and has the D$2$P. We also prove that for Banach spaces admitting a norm-one finite-co-dimensional projection it is impossible to be uniformly rotund in every direction and at the same time have the D$2$P.
We prove several dichotomies on linear embeddings between Banach spaces. Given an arbitrary Banach space X with a basis, we show that the relations of isomorphism and bi-embedding are meager or co-meager on the Polish set of block-subspaces of X. We relate this result with tightness and minimality of Banach spaces. Examples and open questions are provided.
We prove some results on weakly almost square Banach spaces and their relatives. On the one hand, we discuss weak almost squareness in the setting of Banach function spaces. More precisely, let $(Ω,Σ)$ be a measurable space, let $E$ be a Banach lattice and let $ν:Σ\to E^+$ be a non-atomic countably additive measure having relatively norm compact range. Then the space $L_1(ν)$ is weakly almost square. This result applies to some abstract Cesàro function spaces. Similar arguments show that the Lebesgue-Bochner space $L_1(μ,Y)$ is weakly almost square for any Banach space~$Y$ and for any non-atom…
There is a natural isomorphism from image to complement of nullspace, for a bounded linear map from a real Banach space onto a closed subspace of a real Hilbert space. This generalizes Riesz representation (self-duality of Hilbert space). The isomorphism helps solve the pressure equation of fluid dynamics.
We extend the (attaining of) strong diameter two property to infinite cardinals. In particular, a Banach space has the 1-norming attaining strong diameter two property with respect to $ω$ (1-ASD2P$_ω$ for short) if every convex series of slices of the unit ball intersects the unit sphere. We characterize $C(K)$ spaces and $L_1(μ)$ spaces having the 1-ASD2P$_ω$. We establish dual implications between the 1-ASD2P$_ω$, $ω$-octahedral norms and Banach spaces failing the $(-1)$-ball-covering property. The stability of these new properties under direct sums and tensor products is also investigated.
Let $K_1$, $K_2$ be compact Hausdorff spaces and $E_1, E_2$ be Banach spaces not containing a copy of $c_0$. We establish lower estimates of the Banach-Mazur distance between the spaces of continuous functions $\mathcal{C}(K_1, E_1)$ and $\mathcal{C}(K_2, E_2)$ based on the ordinals $ht(K_1)$, $ht(K_2)$, which are new even for the case of spaces of real valued functions on ordinal intervals. As a corollary we deduce that $\mathcal{C}(K_1, E_1)$ and $\mathcal{C}(K_2, E_2)$ are not isomorphic if $ht(K_1)$ is substantially different from $ht(K_2)$.
Let ${\mathcal N}$ and ${\mathcal M}$ be nests on Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ over the (real or complex) field $\mathbb F$ and let $\mbox{\rm Alg}{\mathcal N}$ and $\mbox{\rm Alg}{\mathcal M}$ be the associated nest algebras, respectively. It is shown that a map $Φ:{\rm Alg}{\mathcal N}\rightarrow{\rm Alg}{\mathcal M}$ is a Lie ring isomorphism (i.e., $Φ$ is additive, Lie multiplicative and bijective) if and only if $Φ$ has the form $Φ(A) = TAT^{-1} + h(A)I$ for all $A\in \mbox{\rm Alg}{\mathcal N}$ or $Φ(A)=-TA^*T^{-1}+h(A)I$ for all $A\in \mbox{\rm Alg}{\mathcal N}$, where $h$ is an additive f…
We deal with isomorphic Banach-Stone type theorems for closed subspaces of vector-valued continuous functions. Let $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$. For $i=1,2$, let $E_i$ be a reflexive Banach space over $\mathbb{F}$ with a certain parameter $λ(E_i)>1$, which in the real case coincides with the Schaffer constant of $E_i$, let $K_i$ be a locally compact (Hausdorff) topological space and let $\mathcal{H}_i$ be a closed subspace of $\mathcal{C}_0(K_i, E_i)$ such that each point of the Choquet boundary $\mathcal{Ch}_{\mathcal{H}_i} K_i$ of $\mathcal{H}_i$ is a weak peak point. We show that…
Let \(X\) be a compact metric space and \(E\) be a Banach space. \(\lip (X, E)\) denotes the Banach space of all \(E\)-valued little Lipschitz functions on \(X\). We show that \(\lip (X, E)^{**}\) is isometrically isomorphic to Banach space of \(E^{**}\)-valued Lipschitz functions \(\Lip(X, E^{**})\) under several conditions. Moreover, we describe the isometric isomorphism from \(\lip (X, E)^{**}\) to \(\Lip (X, E^{**})\).
We describe the spectrum of weighted $d$-isomorphisms of Banach lattices restricted on closed subspaces that are "rich" enough to preserve some "memory" of the order structure of the original lattice. The examples include (but are not limited to) weighted isometries of Hardy spaces on the polydisk and unit ball in $\mathds{C}^n$.
A Banach space contains either a minimal subspace or a continuum of incomparable subspaces. General structure results for analytic equivalence relations are applied in the context of Banach spaces to show that if $E_0$ does not reduce to isomorphism of the subspaces of a space, in particular, if the subspaces of the space admit a classification up to isomorphism by real numbers, then any subspace with an unconditional basis is isomorphic to its square and hyperplanes and has an isomorphically homogeneous subsequence.

In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the weak min-max property and the diameter uniformity of domains in Banach spaces with dimensions at least $2$. As an application, we show that diameter uniform domains are invariant under relatively quasimöbius mappings.
We study smoothness and strict convexity of (the bidual) of Banach spaces in the presence of diameter 2 properties. We prove that the strong diameter 2 property prevents the bidual from being strictly convex and being smooth, and we initiate the investigation whether the same is true for the (local) diameter 2 property. We also give characterizations of the following property for a Banach space $X$: "For every slice $S$ of $B_X$ and every norm-one element $x$ in $S$, there is a point $y\in S$ in distance as close to 2 as we want." Spaces with this property are shown to have non-smooth bidual.
We study almost square Banach spaces under a topological point of view. Indeed, we prove that the class of Banach spaces which admits an equivalent norm to be ASQ is that of those Banach spaces which contain an isomorphic copy of $c_0$. We also prove that the symmetric projective tensor products of an almost square Banach space have the strong diameter two property
We study the existence of Daugavet- and delta-points in the unit sphere of Banach spaces with a $1$-unconditional basis. A norm one element $x$ in a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point) if every element in the unit ball (resp. $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. A Banach space has the Daugavet property (resp. diametral local diameter two property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point). It is well-known that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not have an uncon…
A topological setting is defined to study the complexities of the relation of equivalence of embeddings (or "position") of a Banach space into another and of the relation of isomorphism of complex structures on a real Banach space. The following results are obtained: a) if $X$ is not uniformly finitely extensible, then there exists a space $Y$ for which the relation of position of $Y$ inside $X$ reduces the relation $E_0$ and therefore is not smooth; b) the relation of position of $\ell_p$ inside $\ell_p$, or inside $L_p$, $p \neq 2$, reduces the relation $E_1$ and therefore is not reducible t…
The aim of this note is to study some geometrical properties like diameter two properties, octahedrality and almost squareness in the setting of (symmetric) tensor product spaces. In particular, we show that the injective tensor product of two octahedral Banach spaces is always octahedral, the injective tensor product of an almost square Banach space with any Banach space is almost square, and the injective symmetric tensor product of an octahedral Banach space is octahedral.
We show in this paper that every bijective linear isometry between the continuous section spaces of two non-square Banach bundles gives rise to a Banach bundle isomorphism. This is to support our expectation that the geometric structure of the continuous section space of a Banach bundle determines completely its bundle structures. We also describe the structure of an \emph{into} isometry from a continuous section space into an other. However, we demonstrate by an example that a non-surjective linear isometry can be far away from a subbundle embedding.
