In our note we show the very close connection between the existence of a Finite Dimensional Decomposition (FDD for short) for a separable Banach space $X$ and the existence of a Lipschitz retraction of $X$ onto a small (in a certain precise sense) generating convex and compact subset $K$ of $X$. In one direction, if $X$ admits an FDD then we construct a Lipschitz retraction onto a small generating convex and compact set $K$. On the other hand, we prove that if $X$ admits a small generating compact Lipschitz retract then $X$ has the $π$-property. We note that it is still unknown if the $π$-property is isomorphically equivalent to the existence of an FDD. For dual Banach spaces this is true, so our results lead in particular to a characterization of the FDD property for dual Banach spaces $X$ in terms of the existence of Lipschitz retractions onto small generating convex and compact subsets of $X$. It is conceivable that our results will find applications in the area of Lipschitz isomorphisms of Banach spaces. Our arguments make critical use of the Lipschitzization of coarse Lipschitz mappings due to J. Bourgain, and of an unpublished complementability result of V. Milman. We give an example of a small generating convex compact set which is not a Lipschitz retract of $C[0,1]$, although it is contained in a small convex Lipschitz retract and contains another one. In the last part of our note we characterize isomorphically Hilbertian spaces as those Banach spaces $X$ for which every convex and compact subset is a Lipschitz retract of $X$. Finally, we prove that a convex and compact set $K$ in any Banach space with a Uniformly Rotund in Every Direction norm is a uniform retract, of every bounded set containing it, via the nearest point map.
We show that the basis constant of every retractional Schauder basis on the Free space of a graph circle increases with the radius. As a consequence, there exists a uniformly discrete subset $M\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ such that $\mathcal F(M)$ does not have a retractional Schauder basis. Furthermore, we show that for any net $ N\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ there is no retractional unconditional basis on the Free space $\mathcal F(N)$.
In the present note we give two explicit constructions (based on a retractional argument) of a Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$, over certain uniformly discrete metric spaces $N$. The first one applies to every net $N$ in a finite dimensional Banach space, leading to the basis constant independent of the dimension. The second one applies to grids in Banach spaces with an FDD. As a corollary, we obtain a retractional Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$ over a net $N$ in every Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis containing a copy of $c_0$, …
Paley-Wiener theorem for frames for Hilbert spaces, Banach frames, Schauder frames and atomic decompositions for Banach spaces are known. In this paper, we derive Paley-Wiener theorem for p-approximate Schauder frames for separable Banach spaces. We show that our results give Paley-Wiener theorem for frames for Hilbert spaces.
We extend a theorem of Kato on similarity for sequences of projections in Hilbert spaces to the case of isomorphic Schauder decompositions in certain Banach spaces. To this end we use $\ell_Ψ$-Hilbertian and $\infty$-Hilbertian Schauder decompositions instead of orthogonal Schauder decompositions, generalize the concept of an orthogonal Schauder decomposition in a Hilbert space and introduce the class of spaces with Schauder-Orlicz decompositions. Furthermore, we generalize the notions of type, cotype, infratype and $M$-cotype of a Banach space and study the properties of unconditional Schaude…
We introduce the notion of a continuous Schauder frame for a Banach space. This is both a generalization of continuous frames and coherent states for Hilbert spaces and a generalization of unconditional Schauder frames for Banach spaces. As a natural example, we prove that any wavelet for $L_p(\R)$ with $1<p<\infty$ generates a continuous wavelet Schauder frame. Furthermore, we generalize the properties shrinking and boundedly complete to the continuous Schauder frame setting, and prove that many of the fundamental James theorems still hold in this general context.
This paper studies Schauder frames in Banach spaces, a concept which is a natural generalization of frames in Hilbert spaces and Schauder bases in Banach spaces. The associated minimal and maximal spaces are introduced, as are shrinking and boundedly complete Schauder frames. Our main results extend the classical duality theorems on bases to the situation of Schauder frames. In particular, we will generalize James' results on shrinking and boundedly complete bases to frames. Secondly we will extend his characterization of the reflexivity of spaces with unconditional bases to spaces with uncond…
We present an isometric version of the complementably universal Banach space $\mathbb{P}$ with a Schauder decomposition. The space $\mathbb{P}$ is isomorphic to Pełczyński's space with a universal basis as well as to Kadec' complementably universal space with the bounded approximation property.
It is known in Hilbert space frame theory that a Bessel sequence can be expanded to a frame. Contrary to Hilbert space situation, using a result of Casazza and Christensen, we show that there are Banach spaces and approximate Bessel sequences which can not be expanded to approximate Schauder frames. We characterize Banach spaces in which one can expand approximate Bessel sequences to approximate Schauder frames.
We give an intrinsic characterisation of the separable reflexive Banach spaces that embed into separable reflexive spaces with an unconditional basis all of whose normalised block sequences with the same growth rate are equivalent. This uses methods of E. Odell and T. Schlumprecht.
We utilize the idea underlying the construct of the classical weighted backward shift Rolewicz's operators to furnish a straightforward approach to a general construct of chaotic unbounded linear operators in a (real or complex) Banach space with a Schauder basis.
We prove that a Schauder frame for any separable Banach space is shrinking if and only if it has an associated space with a shrinking basis, and that a Schauder frame for any separable Banach space is shrinking and boundedly complete if and only if it has a reflexive associated space. To obtain these results, we prove that the upper and lower estimate theorems for finite dimensional decompositions of Banach spaces can be extended and modified to Schauder frames. We show as well that if a separable infinite dimensional Banach space has a Schauder frame, then it also has a Schauder frame which i…
In the present note we give a construction (based on a retractional argument) of a Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$, over a net $N$ in any separable infinite dimensional $\mathcal{L}_\infty$-space $X$. In particular, this yields the first example of an infinite dimensional Banach space $X$ not containing $c_0$ with such a property.
In the present paper we prove that a necessary condition for a Banach space $X$ to admit a generating compact Lipschitz retract $K$, which satisfies an additional mild assumption on its shape, is that $X$ enjoys the Bounded Approximation Property. This is a partial solution to a question raised by Godefroy and Ozawa.
We extend the well-known characterizations of convergence in the spaces $l_p$ ($1\le p<\infty$) of $p$-summable sequence and $c_0$ of vanishing sequences to a general characterization of convergence in a Banach space with a Schauder basis and obtain as instant corollaries characterizations of convergence in an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space and the space $c$ of convergent sequences.
In the present paper we introduce and study the Lipschitz retractional structure of metric spaces. This topic was motivated by the analogous projectional structure of Banach spaces, a topic that has been thoroughly investigated. The more general metric setting fits well with the currently active theory of Lipschitz free spaces and spaces of Lipschitz functions. Among our applications we show that the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(X)$ is a Plichko space whenever $X$ is a Plichko Banach space. Our main results include two examples of metric spaces. The first one $M$ contains two points $\{0,…
The main result of this paper is a fixed point result relating the spreading model structure of Banach spaces and Schauder basis with not too large basis constant. As a striking consequence, we deduce that every super-reflexive space has the fixed point property thus solving a long-standing open question in metric fixed point theory.
We prove that if X is any complex separable infinite-dimensional Banach space with an unconditional Schauder decomposition, X supports an operator T which is chaotic and frequently hypercyclic. In contrast with the complex case, we observe that there are real Banach spaces with an unconditional basis which support no chaotic operator.
Difficulty in the construction of dual frames for a given Hilbert space led to the introduction of approximately dual frames in Hilbert spaces by Christensen and Laugesen. It becomes even more difficult in Banach spaces to construct duals. For this purpose, we introduce approximately dual frames for a class of approximate Schauder frames for Banach spaces and develop basic theory. Approximate duals for this subclass is completely characterized and its perturbation is also studied.
We extend the concept of weaving Hilbert space frames to the Banach space setting. Similar to frames in a Hilbert space, we show that for any two approximate Schauder frames for a Banach space, every weaving is an approximate Schauder frame if and only if there is a uniform constant $C\geq 1$ such that every weaving is a $C$-approximate Schauder frame. We also study weaving Schauder bases, where it is necessary to introduce two notions of weaving. On one hand, we can ask if two Schauder bases are woven when considered as Schauder frames with their biorthogonal functionals, and alternatively, w…
Schauder's theorem asserts that a bounded linear operator between Banach spaces is compact if ad only if its adjoint is. We give a new proof of this result, which is both short and completely elementary in the sense that it does not depend on anything beyond basic functional analysis, i.e., the Hahn--Banach theorem and some of its consequences; in particular, we avoid the Arzela--Ascoli theorem (and any kind of related diagonal argument).
A basic problem of interest in connection with the study of Schauder frames in Banach spaces is that of characterizing those Schauder frames which can essentially be regarded as Schauder bases. In this paper, we give a solution to this problem using the notion of the minimal-associated sequence spaces and the minimal-associated reconstruction operators for Schauder frames. We prove that a Schauder frame is a near-Schauder basis if and only if the kernel of the minimal-associated reconstruction operator contains no copy of $c_0$. In particular, a Schauder frame of a Banach space with no copy of…
We begin the study of characterizations of recently defined approximate Schauder frame (ASF) and its duals for separable Banach spaces. We show that, under some conditions, both ASF and its dual frames can be characterized for Banach spaces. We also give an operator-theoretic characterization for similarity of ASFs. Our results encode the results of Holub, Li, Balan, Han, and Larson. We also address orthogonality of ASFs.
Famous Naimark-Han-Larson dilation theorem for frames in Hilbert spaces states that every frame for a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is image of a Riesz basis under an orthogonal projection from a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_1$ which contains $\mathcal{H}$ isometrically. In this paper, we derive dilation result for p-approximate Schauder frames for separable Banach spaces. Our result contains Naimark-Han-Larson dilation theorem as a particular case.
We introduce and study two notions of entropy in a Banach space X with a normalized Schauder basis . The geometric entropy E(A) of a subset A of X is defined to be the infimum of radii of compact bricks containing A. We obtain several compactness characterizations for bricks (Theorem 3.7) useful for main results. We also obtain sufficient conditions on a set in a Hilbert space to have finite unconditional entropy. For Banach spaces without a Schauder basis we offer another entropy, called the Auerbach entropy. Finally, we pose some open problems.
We prove that in every separable Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis and a $C^k$-smooth norm it is possible to approximate, uniformly on bounded sets, every equivalent norm with a $C^k$-smooth one in a way that the approximation is improving as fast as we wish on the elements depending only on the tail of the Schauder basis. Our result solves a problem from the recent monograph of Guirao, Montesinos and Zizler.
With the aim of representing subsets of Banach spaces as an infinite series using Lipschitz functions, we study a variant of metric frames which we call Lipschitz p-approximate Schauder frames (Lipschitz p-ASFs). We characterize Lipschitz p-ASFs and their duals completely using the canonical Schauder basis for classical sequence spaces. Similarity of Lipschitz p-ASF is introduced and characterized.
A very useful identity for Parseval frames for Hilbert spaces was obtained by Balan, Casazza, Edidin, and Kutyniok. In this paper, we obtain a similar identity for Parseval p-approximate Schauder frames for Banach spaces which admits a homogeneous semi-inner product in the sense of Lumer-Giles.
It was proved by Argyros and Dodos that, for many classes $ C $ of separable Banach spaces which share some property $ P $, there exists an isomorphically universal space that satisfies $ P $ as well. We introduce a variant of their amalgamation technique which provides an isometrically universal space in the case that $ C $ consists of spaces with a monotone Schauder basis. For example, we prove that if $ C $ is a set of separable Banach spaces which is analytic with respect to the Effros-Borel structure and every $ X \in C $ is reflexive and has a monotone Schauder basis, then there exists a…
Two retractions Q and R on closed convex cones M and respectively N of a Banach space are called mutually polar if Q+R=I and QR=RQ=0. This note investigates the existence of a pair of mutually polar retractions for given cones M and N. It is shown that if dim N=1 (or dim M=1) then the retractions are subadditive with respect to the order relation their cone range endow.
We characterize the weak-star point of continuity property for subspaces of dual spaces with separable predual and we deduce that the weak-star point of continuity property is determined by subspaces with a Schauder basis in the natural setting of dual spaces of separable Banach spaces. As a consequence of the above characterization we get that a dual space satisfies the Radon-Nikodym property if, and only if, every seminormalized topologically weak-star null tree has a boundedly complete branch, which improves some results in \cite{DF} obtained for the separable case. Also, as a consequence o…
Let $X^*$ denote a Banach space with a subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder basis satisfying condition~\eqref{eq:condition-c}. We show that for any operator $T : X^*\to X^*$, either $T(X^*)$ or $(I-T)(X^*)$ contains a subspace that is isomorphic to $X^*$ and complemented in $X^*$. Moreover, we prove that $\ell^p(X^*)$, $1\leq p \leq \infty$ is primary.
We provide a characterization of the Banach spaces $X$ with a Schauder basis $(e_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ which have the property that the dual space $X^*$ is naturally isomorphic to the space $\mathcal{L}_{diag}(X)$ of diagonal operators with respect to $(e_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ . We also construct a Hereditarily Indecomposable Banach space ${\mathfrak X}_D$ with a Schauder basis $(e_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ such that ${\mathfrak X}^*_D$ is isometric to $\mathcal{L}_{diag}({\mathfrak X}_D)$ with these Banach algebras being Hereditarily Indecomposable. Finally, we show that every $T\in \mathcal{L}_{dia…
Motivated from two decades old famous Feichtinger conjectures for frames, $R_\varepsilon$-conjecture and Weaver's conjecture for Hilbert spaces (and their solution by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava), we formulate Feichtinger conjectures for p-approximate Schauder frames, $R_\varepsilon$-conjecture, Weaver's conjectures and Akemann-Weaver conjectures for Banach spaces. We also formulate conjectures on p-approximate Schauder frames based on the results of Casazza for frames for Hilbert spaces. We state conjectures and problems for p-approximate Schauder frames based on fundamental inequality f…
For a Banach space $X$ with a shrinking Schauder frame $(x_i,f_i)$ we provide an explicit method for constructing a shrinking associated basis. In the case that the minimal associated basis is not shrinking, we prove that every shrinking associated basis of $(x_i,f_i)$ dominates an uncountable family of incomparable shrinking associated bases of $(x_i,f_i)$. By adapting a construction of Pełczy{ń}ski, we characterize spaces with shrinking Schauder frames as spaces having the $w^*$-bounded approximation property.
Motivated from the complete solution of important $abc$-problem for Gabor system for the Hilbert space $\mathcal{L}^2(\mathbb{R})$ by Dai and Sun [\textit{Memoirs of Amer. Math. Soc., 2016}] and from the existential result of approximate Schauder frames for $\mathcal{L}^p(\mathbb{R})$ using translation operators on $\mathcal{L}^p(\mathbb{R})$ by Freeman, Odell, Schlumprecht, and Zsak [\textit{Israel. J. Math, 2014}], we formulate $(abc, pqr)$-problem for approximate Schauder frames for Banach spaces $\mathcal{L}^p(\mathbb{R})$, $1<p<\infty$.
In this paper, two main results concerning uniformly continuous retractions are proved. First, an $α$-Hölder retraction from any separable Banach space onto a compact convex subset whose closed linear span is the whole space is constructed for every positive $α<1$. This constitutes a positive solution to a Hölder version of a question raised by Godefroy and Ozawa. In fact, compact convex sets are found to be absolute $α$-Hölder retracts under certain assumption of flatness. Second, we provide an example of a strictly convex Banach space $X$ arbitrarily close to $\ell_2$ (for the Banach Mazur d…
For a constant $K\geq 1$ let $\mathfrak{B}_K$ be the class of pairs $(X,(\mathbf e_n)_{n\inω})$ consisting of a Banach space $X$ and an unconditional Schauder basis $(\mathbf e_n)_{n\inω}$ for $X$, having the unconditional basic constant $K_u\leq K$. Such pairs are called $K$-based Banach spaces. A based Banach space $X$ is rational if the unit ball of any finite-dimensional subspace spanned by finitely many basic vectors is a polyhedron whose vertices have rational coordinates in the Schauder basis of $X$. Using the technique of Fraïssé theory, we construct a rational $K$-based Banach space $…
We study the existence of a retraction from the dual space $X^*$ of a (real or complex) Banach space $X$ onto its unit ball $B_{X^*}$ which is uniformly continuous in norm topology and continuous in weak-$*$ topology. Such a retraction is called a uniformly simultaneously continuous retraction. It is shown that if $X$ has a normalized unconditional Schauder basis with unconditional basis constant 1 and $X^*$ is uniformly monotone, then a uniformly simultaneously continuous retraction from $X^*$ onto $B_{X^*}$ exists. It is also shown that if $\{X_i\}$ is a family of separable Banach spaces who…
For a large class of Banach spaces, a general construction of subspaces without local unconditional structure is presented. As an application it is shown that every Banach space of finite cotype contains either $l_2$ or a subspace without unconditional basis, which admits a Schauder basis. Some other interesting applications and corollaries follow.
We introduce a new concept of frame operators for Banach spaces we call a Hilbert-Schauder frame operator. This is a hybird between standard frame theory for Hilbert spaces and Schauder frame theory for Banach spaces. Most of our results involve basic structure properties of the Hilbert-Schauder frame operator. Examples of Hilbert-Schauder frames include standard Hilbert frames and classical bases of $\ell_p$ and $L^p$-spaces with $1< p \le 2$. Finally, we give a new isomorphic characterization of Hilbert spaces.
Using the technique of Fraïssé theory, for every constant $K\ge 1$ we consruct a universal object in the class of Banach spaces with normalized $K$-suppression unconditional Schauder bases.
We prove some generalizations of results concerning Valdivia compact spaces (equivalently spaces with a commutative retractional skeleton) to the spaces with a retractional skeleton (not necessarily commutative). Namely, we show that the dual unit ball of a Banach space is Corson provided the dual unit ball of every equivalent norm has a retractional skeleton. Another result to be mentioned is the following. Having a compact space K, we show that K is Corson if and only if every continuous image of K has a retractional skeleton.
We investigate for a bounded semigroup of linear operators $S$ on a Banach space $E$ and a vector $x \in E$, when relative compactness of $S(I-T)x$ for every $T \in S$ implies relative compactness of the orbit $Sx$. In particular, we derive characterizations of separable Banach spaces not containing $\mathrm{c}_0$ and of reflexivity of Banach spaces with a Schauder basis in terms of such compactness results.
We prove that if $ C $ is a family of separable Banach spaces which is analytic with respect to the Effros-Borel structure and none member of $ C $ is isometrically universal for all separable Banach spaces, then there exists a separable Banach space with a monotone Schauder basis which is isometrically universal for $ C $ but still not for all separable Banach spaces. We also establish an analogous result for the class of strictly convex spaces.
