The paper is devoted to two particular cases of the following general problem. Let $α$ and $β$ be two types of bases in Banach spaces. Let a Banach space $X$ has bases of both types and a subspace $M\subset X^*$ contains the sequence of biorthogonal functionals of some $α$-basis in $X$. Does $M$ contain a sequence of biorthogonal functionals of some $β$-basis in $X$?
The following particular cases are considered:
$(α, β)$=(Schauder bases, unconditional bases),
$(α, β)$=(Nonlinear operational bases, linear operational bases).
The paper contains an investigation of some of the spaces constructed by S.Belle\-not in ``The $J$-sum of Banach spaces'', J. Funct. Anal. {\bf 48} (1982), 95--106. (These spaces are used in some examples.)
In the first part of our note we prove that every Weakly Lindelöf Determined (WLD) (in particular, every reflexive) non-separable Banach $X$ space contains two dense linear subspaces $Y$ and $Z$ that are not densely isomorphic. This means that there are no further dense linear subspaces $Y_0$ and $Z_0$ of $Y$ and $Z$ which are linearly isomorphic. Our main result (Theorem B) concerns the existence of biorthogonal systems in normed spaces. In particular, we prove under the Continuum Hypothesis (CH) that there exists a dense linear subspace of $\ell_2(ω_1)$ (or more generally every WLD space of …
Let $\{v_n\}$ be a complete minimal system in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and let $\{w_m\}$ be its biorthogonal system. It is well known that $\{w_m\}$ is not necessarily complete. However the situation may change if we consider systems of reproducing kernels in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ of analytic functions. We study the completeness problem for a class of spaces with a Riesz basis of reproducing kernels and for model subspaces $K_Θ$ of the Hardy space. We find a class of spaces where systems biorthogonal to complete systems of reproducing kernels are always complete…
We consider topological invariants on compact spaces related to the sizes of discrete subspaces (spread), densities of subspaces, Lindelof degree of subspaces, irredundant families of clopen sets and others and look at the following associations between compact topological spaces and Banach spaces: a compact K induces a Banach space C(K) of real valued continuous functions on K with the supremum norm; a Banach space X induces a compact space - the dual ball with the weak* topology. We inquire on how topological invariants on K and the dual ball are linked to the sizes of biorthogonal systems a…
We show that B-spline quarks and the associated quarklets fit into the theory of biorthogonal multiwavelets. Quark vectors are used to define sequences of subspaces $ V_{p,j} $ of $ L_{2}(\mathbb{R}) $ which fulfill almost all conditions of a multiresolution analysis. Under some special conditions on the parameters they even satisfy all those properties. Moreover we prove that quarks and quarklets possess modulation matrices which fulfill the perfect reconstruction condition. Furthermore we show the existence of generalized dual quarks and quarklets which are known to be at least compactly sup…
We study Banach spaces satisfying some geometric or structural properties involving tightness of transfinite sequences of nested linear subspaces. These properties are much weaker than WCG and closely related to Corson's property (C). Given a transfinite sequence of normalized vectors, which is dispersed or null in some sense, we extract a subsequence which is a biorthogonal sequence, or even a weakly null monotone basic sequence, depending on the setting. The Separable Complementation Property is established for spaces with an M-basis under rather weak geometric properties. We also consider a…
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for when a sequence of finite dimensional subspaces (X_n) can be blocked to be a skipped blocking decompositon (SBD). These are very similar to known results about blocking of biorthogonal sequences. A separable space $X$ has PCP, if and only if, every norming decomposition (X_n) can be blocked to be a boundedly complete SBD. Every boundedly complete SBD is a JT-decomposition.
We prove that a Hilbert space frame $\fti$ contains a Riesz basis if every subfamily $\ftj , J \subseteq I ,$ is a frame for its closed span. Secondly we give a new characterization of Banach spaces which do not have any subspace isomorphic to $c_0$. This result immediately leads to an improvement of a recent theorem of Holub concerning frames consisting of a Riesz basis plus finitely many elements.
We show that for every $1<n<\infty$, there exits a Banach space $X_n$ containing proximinal subspaces of codimension $n$ but no proximinal finite codimensional subspaces of higher codimension. Moreover, the set of norm-attaining functionals of $X_n$ contains $n$-dimensional subspaces, but no subspace of higher dimension. This gives a $n$-by-$n$ version of the solutions given by Read and Rmoutil to problems of Singer and Godefroy. We also study the existence of strongly proximinal subspaces of finite codimension, showing that for every $1<n<\infty$ and $1\leqslant k <n$, there is a Banach space…
The purpose of this article is twofold. First of all, the notion of $(D, E)$-quasi basis is introduced for a pair $(D, E)$ of dense subspaces of Hilbert spaces. This consists of two biorthogonal sequences $\{ φ_n \}$ and $\{ ψ_n \}$ such that $\sum_{n=0}^\infty \ip{x}{φ_n}\ip{ψ_n}{y}=\ip{x}{y}$ for all $x \in D$ and $y \in E$. Secondly, it is shown that if biorthogonal sequences $\{ φ_n \}$ and $\{ ψ_n \}$ form a $(D ,E)$-quasi basis, then they are generalized Riesz systems. The latter play an interesting role for the construction of non-self-adjoint Hamiltonians and other physically relevant …
In this paper we establish some new results concerning the Cauchy-Peano problem in Banach spaces. Firstly, we prove that if a Banach space $E$ admits a fundamental biorthogonal system, then there exists a continuous vector field $f\colon E\to E$ such that the autonomous differential equation $u'=f(u)$ has no solutions at any time. The proof relies on a key result asserting that every infinite-dimensional Fréchet space with a fundamental biorthogonal system possesses a nontrivial separable quotient. The later, is the byproduct of a mixture of known results on barrelledness and two fundamental r…
Several new characterizations of Banach spaces containing a subspace isomorphic to $\ell^1$, are obtained. These are applied to the question of when $\ell^1$ embeds in the injective tensor product of two Banach spaces.
The class of countably intersected families of sets is defined. For any such family we define a Banach space not containing $\ell^{1}(\NN )$. Thus we obtain counterexamples to certain questions related to the heredity problem for W.C.G. Banach spaces. Among them we give a subspace of a W.C.G. Banach space not containing $\ell^{1}(\NN )$ and not being itself a W.C.G. space.
A subsequence principle is obtained, characterizing Banach spaces containing $c_0$, in the spirit of the author's 1974 characterization of Banach spaces containing $\ell^1$. Definition: A sequence $(b_j)$ in a Banach space is called {\it strongly summing\/} (s.s.) if $(b_j)$ is a weak-Cauchy basic sequence so that whenever scalars $(c_j)$ satisfy $\sup_n \|\sum_{j=1}^n c_j b_j\| <\infty$, then $\sum c_j$ converges. A simple permanence property: if $(b_j)$ is an (s.s.) basis for a Banach space $B$ and $(b_j^*)$ are its biorthogonal functionals in $B^*$, then $(\sum_{j=1}^n b_j^*)_{n=1}^ \infty$…
In this paper, we construct new important the subspaces $D_{p}^{q}S$, $D_{p}^{q}W$, $D_{p}^{q}F$ and $D_{p}^{q}B$ for a locally convex FK-space $X$ containing $ϕ$, the space of finite sequences. Then we show that there is relation among these subspaces. Also, we study deferred Cesàro conullity of one FK-space with respect to another, and we give some important results. Finally, we examine the deferred Cesàro conullity of the absolute summability domain $l_A$, and show that if $l_A$ is deferred Cesàro conull, then $A$ cannot be $l$-replaceable.
In this paper, we study the descriptive complexity of some inevitable classes of Banach spaces. Precisely, as shown in [Go], every Banach space either contains a hereditarily indecomposable subspace or an unconditional basis, and, as shown in [FR], every Banach space either contains a minimal subspace or a continuously tight subspace. In these notes, we study the complexity of those inevitable classes as well as the complexity of containing a subspace in any of those classes.
We show that every Banach space $X$ containing an isomorphic copy of $c_0$ has an infinite equilateral set and also that if $X$ has a bounded biorthogonal system of size $α$ then it can be renormed so as to admit an equilateral set of equal size. If $K$ is any compact non metrizable space, then under a certain combinatorial condition on $K$ the Banach space $C(K)$ has an uncountable equilateral set.
A hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{\mathfrak{nr}}$ is constructed that is the first known example of a $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space not containing $c_0$, $\ell_1$, or reflexive subspaces and answers a question posed by J. Bourgain. Moreover, the space $\mathfrak{X}_{\mathfrak{nr}}$ satisfies the "scalar-plus-compact" property and it is the first known space without reflexive subspaces having this property. It is constructed using the Bourgain-Delbaen method in combination with a recent version of saturation under constraints in a mixed-Tsirelson setting. As a result, the s…
We show that every Lorentz sequence space $d(\textbf{w},p)$ admits a 1-complemented subspace $Y$ distinct from $\ell_p$ and containing no isomorph of $d(\textbf{w},p)$. In the general case, this is only the second nontrivial complemented subspace in $d(\textbf{w},p)$ yet known. We also give an explicit representation of $Y$ in the special case $\textbf{w}=(n^{-θ})_{n=1}^\infty$ ($0<θ<1$) as the $\ell_p$-sum of finite-dimensional copies of $d(\textbf{w},p)$. As an application, we find a sixth distinct element in the lattice of closed ideals of $\mathcal{L}(d(\textbf{w},p))$, of which only five …
In this note we show that every Banach space $X$ not containing $\ell_1^n$ uniformly and with unconditional basis contains an arbitrarily distortable subspace.
A result of G. Godefroy asserts that a Banach space $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if there is an equivalent norm $|||\cdot|||$ such that, for every finite-dimensional subspace $Y$ of $X$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $x\in S_X$ so that $|||y+r x|||\geq (1-\varepsilon)(|||y|||+\vert r\vert)$ for every $y\in Y$ and every $r\in\mathbb R$. In this paper we generalize this result to larger cardinals, showing that if $κ$ is an uncountable cardinal then a Banach space $X$ contains a copy of $\ell_1(κ)$ if and only if there is an equivalent norm $|||\cdot|||$ on $X$…
We present a construction that enables one to find Banach spaces $X$ whose sets $NA(X)$ of norm attaining functionals do not contain two-dimensional subspaces and such that, consequently, $X$ does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than one, extending the results recently provided by Read and Rmoutil. Roughly speaking, we construct an equivalent renorming with the requested properties for every Banach space $X$ where the set $NA(X)$ for the original norm is not "too large". The construction can be applied to every Banach space containing $c_0$ and having a countable…
In this work we shall be concerned with some stability aspects of the classical problem of extension of $C(K)$-valued operators. We introduce the class $\mathscr{LP}$ of Banach spaces of Lindenstrauss-Pełczyński type as those such that every operator from a subspace of $c_0$ into them can be extended to $c_0$. We show that all $\mathscr{LP}$-spaces are of type $\mathcal L_\infty$ but not the converse. Moreover, $\mathcal L_\infty$-spaces will be characterized as those spaces $E$ such that $E$-valued operators from $w^*(l_1,c_0)$-closed subspaces of $l_1$ extend to $l_1$. Complemented subspaces…
Let $X$ be a topological vector space of complex-valued sequences and $Y$ be a subset of $X$. We provide conditions for $X \setminus Y \cup \{0\}$ to contain uncountably infinitely many linearly independent dense vector subspaces of $X$. We also provide conditions for $X \setminus Y \cup \{0\}$ to contain uncountably infinitely many linearly independent closed infinite-dimensional vector subspaces of $X$. We apply these results to a chain of spaces containing the $\ell^p$ spaces.
We study the relative position of three subspaces in a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. In the finite-dimensional case, Brenner described the general position of three subspaces completely. We extend it to a certain class of three subspaces in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. We also give a partial result which gives a condition on a system to have a (dense) decomposition containing a pentagon.
We study some structural aspects of the subspaces of the non-commutative (Haagerup) L_p-spaces associated with a general (non necessarily semi-finite) von Neumann algebra A. If a subspace X of L_p(A) contains uniformly the spaces \ell_p^n, n>= 1, it contains an almost isometric, almost 1-complemented copy of \ell_p. If X contains uniformly the finite dimensional Schatten classes S_p^n, it contains their \ell_p-direct sum too. We obtain a version of the classical Kadec-Pel czynski dichotomy theorem for L_p-spaces, p>= 2. We also give operator space versions of these results. The proofs are base…
Given an arbitrary finite set of data F= {f_1,..., f_m} in L2(Rd) we prove the existence and show how to construct a "small shift invariant space" that is "closest" to the data F over certain class of closed subspaces of L2(Rd). The approximating subspace is required to have extra-invariance properties, that is to be invariant under translations by a prefixed additive subgroup of Rd containing Zd. This is important for example in situations where we need to deal with jitter error of the data. Here small means that our solution subspace should be generated by the integer translates of a small n…
If $X$ is a closed subspace of a Banach space $L$ which embeds into a Banach lattice not containing $\ell_\infty^n$'s uniformly and $L/X$ contains $\ell_\infty^n$'s uniformly, then $X$ cannot have local unconditional structure in the sense of Gordon-Lewis (GL-{\sl l.u.st.}).
Given a pointed metric space $M$, we study when there exist $n$-dimensional linear subspaces of $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ consisting of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functionals, for $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that this is always the case for infinite metric spaces, providing a definitive answer to the question. We also study the possible sizes of such infinite-dimensional closed linear subspaces $Y$, as well as the inverse question, that is, the possible sizes of the metric space $M$ given that such a subspace $Y$ exists. We also show that if the metric space $M$ is $σ$-precompact, then th…
For a metric space $(K,d)$ the Banach space $\Lip(K)$ consists of all scalar-valued bounded Lipschitz functions on $K$ with the norm $\|f\|_{L}=\max(\|f\|_{\infty},L(f))$, where $L(f)$ is the Lipschitz constant of $f$. The closed subspace $\lip(K)$ of $\Lip(K)$ contains all elements of $\Lip(K)$ satisfying the $\lip$-condition $\lim_{0<d(x,y)\to 0}|f(x)-f(y)|/d(x,y)=0$. For $K=([0,1],| {\cdot} |^α)$, $0<α<1$, we prove that $\lip(K)$ is a proper $M$-ideal in a certain subspace of $\Lip(K)$ containing a copy of $\ell^{\infty}$.
We characterize Cesàro-Orlicz function spaces $Ces_φ$ containing isomorphic copy of $l^\infty$. We also describe the subspaces $(Ces_φ)_a$ of all order continuous elements of $Ces_φ$. Finally, we study the monotonicity structure of the spaces $Ces_φ$ and $(Ces_φ)_a$.
In the present work we provide a variety of examples of HI Banach spaces containing no reflexive subspace and we study the structure of their duals as well as the spaces of their linear bounded operators. Our approach is based on saturated extensions of ground sets and the method of attractors.
The main results of the paper: {\bf (1)} The dual Banach space $X^*$ contains a linear subspace $A\subset X^*$ such that the set $A^{(1)}$ of all limits of weak$^*$ convergent bounded nets in $A$ is a proper norm-dense subset of $X^*$ if and only if $X$ is a non-quasi-reflexive Banach space containing an infinite-dimensional subspace with separable dual. {\bf (2)} Let $X$ be a non-reflexive Banach space. Then there exists a convex subset $A\subset X^*$ such that $A^{(1)}\neq {\bar{A}\,}^*$ (the latter denotes the weak$^*$ closure of $A$). {\bf (3)} Let $X$ be a quasi-reflexive Banach space and…
The spaces $W_α$ are the Banach spaces whose duals are isometric to $\ell_1$ and such that the standard basis of $\ell_1$ is $w^*$-convergent to $α\in \ell_1$. The core result of our paper proves that an $\ell_1$-predual $X$ contains isometric copies of all $W_α$, where the norm of $α$ is controlled by the supremum of the norms of the $w^*$-cluster points of the extreme points of the closed unit ball in $\ell_1$. More precisely, for every $\ell_1$-predual $X$ we have $$ r^*(X)=\sup\left\lbrace \left\|g^*\right\|: g^*\in \left(\mathrm{ext}\, B_{\ell_1}\right)'\right\rbrace =\sup \left\lbrace \l…
In 1965, Ron Douglas proved that if $X$ is a closed subspace of an $L^1$-space and $X$ is isometric to another $L^1$-space, then $X$ is the range of a contractive projection on the containing $L^1$-space. In 1977 Arazy-Friedman showed that if a subspace $X$ of $C_1$ is isometric to another $C_1$-space (possibly finite dimensional), then there is a contractive projection of $C_1$ onto $X$. In 1993 Kirchberg proved that if a subspace $X$ of the predual of a von Neumann algebra $M$ is isometric to the predual of another von Neumann algebra, then there is a contractive projection of the predual of…
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a countably infinite group of unitary operators on a complex separable Hilbert space $H$. Let $X = \{x_{1},...,x_{r}\}$ and $Y = \{y_{1},...,y_{s}\}$ be finite subsets of $H$, $r < s$, $V_{0} = \bar{span} \mathcal{G}(X), V_1 = \bar{span} \mathcal{G}(Y)$ and $ V_{0} \subset V_{1} $. We prove the following result: Let $W_0$ be a closed linear subspace of $V_1$ such that $V_0 \oplus W_0 = V_1$ (i.e., $V_0 + W_0 = V_1$ and $V_0 \cap W_0 = \{0 \}$). Suppose that $\mathcal{G}(X)$ and $\mathcal{G}(Y)$ are Riesz bases for $V_{0}$ and $V_{1}$ respectively. Then there exists a subse…
The notion of a strongly summing sequence is introduced. Such a sequence is weak-Cauchy, a basis for its closed linear span, and has the crucial property that the dual of this span is not weakly sequentially complete. The main result is: Theorem. Every non-trivial weak-Cauchy sequence in a \RM(real or complex\RM) Banach space has either a strongly summing sequence or a convex block basis equivalent to the summing basis. (A weak-Cauchy sequence is called {\it non-trivial} if it is {\it non-weakly convergent}.) The following characterization of spaces containing $c_0$ is thus obtained, in the sp…
The famous Rosenthal-Lacey theorem asserts that for each infinite compact space $K$ the Banach space $C(K)$ admits a quotient which is either a copy of $c_{0}$ or $\ell_{2}$. The aim of the paper is to study a natural variant of this result for the space $C_{p}(K)$ of continuous real-valued maps on $K$ with the pointwise topology. Following famous Josefson-Nissenzweig theorem for infinite-dimensional Banach spaces we introduce a corresponding property (called Josefson-Nissenzweig property, briefly, the JNP) for $C_{p}$-spaces. We prove: For a Tychonoff space $X$ the space $C_p(X)$ satisfies th…
