Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a Banach space with a fundamental biorthogonal system and let $\mathcal{Y}$ be the dense subspace spanned by the vectors of the system. We prove that $\mathcal{Y}$ admits a $C^\infty$-smooth norm that locally depends on finitely many coordinates (LFC, for short), as well as a polyhedral norm that locally depends on finitely many coordinates. As a consequence, we also prove that $\mathcal{Y}$ admits locally finite, $σ$-uniformly discrete $C^\infty$-smooth and LFC partitions of unity and a $C^1$-smooth LUR norm. This theorem substantially generalises several results present in the literature and gives a complete picture concerning smoothness in such dense subspaces. Our result covers, for instance, every WLD Banach space (hence, all reflexive ones), $L_1(μ)$ for every measure $μ$, $\ell_\infty(Γ)$ spaces for every set $Γ$, $C(K)$ spaces where $K$ is a Valdivia compactum or a compact Abelian group, duals of Asplund spaces, or preduals of Von Neumann algebras. Additionally, under Martin Maximum {\sf MM}, all Banach spaces of density $ω_1$ are covered by our result.
In the first part of our note we prove that every Weakly Lindelöf Determined (WLD) (in particular, every reflexive) non-separable Banach $X$ space contains two dense linear subspaces $Y$ and $Z$ that are not densely isomorphic. This means that there are no further dense linear subspaces $Y_0$ and $Z_0$ of $Y$ and $Z$ which are linearly isomorphic. Our main result (Theorem B) concerns the existence of biorthogonal systems in normed spaces. In particular, we prove under the Continuum Hypothesis (CH) that there exists a dense linear subspace of $\ell_2(ω_1)$ (or more generally every WLD space of …
In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the norm on an infinite dimensional Banach space to be sub differentiable, for various classes of Bananch spaces.
We show that norms on certain Banach spaces $X$ can be approximated uniformly, and with arbitrary precision, on bounded subsets of $X$ by $C^{\infty}$ smooth norms and polyhedral norms. In particular, we show that this holds for any equivalent norm on $c_0(Γ)$, where $Γ$ is an arbitrary set. We also give a necessary condition for the existence of a polyhedral norm on a weakly compactly generated Banach space, which extends a well-known result of Fonf.
Let $E$ be a $(\mathrm{IV})$-polyhedral Banach space. We show that, for each $ε>0$, $E$ admits an $ε$-equivalent $\mathrm{(V)}$-polyhedral norm such that the corresponding closed unit ball is the closed convex hull of its extreme points. In particular, we obtain that every separable isomorphically polyhedral Banach space, for each $ε>0$, admits an $ε$-equivalent $(\mathrm{V})$-polyhedral norm such that the corresponding closed unit ball is the closed convex hull of its extreme points.
Let $(x_n)$ be a sequence in a Banach space $X$ which does not converge in norm, and let $E$ be an isomorphically precisely norming set for $X$ such that \[ \sum_n |x^*(x_{n+1}-x_n)|< \infty, \; \forall x^* \in E. \qquad (*) \] Then there exists a subsequence of $(x_n)$ which spans an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space. It follows immediately from results of V. Fonf that the converse is also true: If a separable Banach space $Y$ is a separable isomorphically polyhedral then there exists a non norm convergent sequence $(x_n)$ which spans $Y$ and there exists an isomorphically precisely norm…
The aim of this note is to present two results that make the task of finding equivalent polyhedral norms on certain Banach spaces, having either a Schauder basis or an uncountable unconditional basis, easier and more transparent. The hypotheses of both results are based on decomposing the unit sphere of a Banach space into countably many pieces, such that each one satisfies certain properties. Some examples of spaces having equivalent polyhedral norms are given.
The aim of this paper is to present two tools, Theorems 4 and 7, that make the task of finding equivalent polyhedral norms on certain Banach spaces easier and more transparent. The hypotheses of both tools are based on countable decompositions, either of the unit sphere S_X or of certain subsets of the dual ball of a given Banach space X. The sufficient conditions of Theorem 4 are shown to be necessary in the separable case. Using Theorem 7, we can unify two known results regarding the polyhedral renorming of certain C(K) spaces, and spaces having an (uncountable) unconditional basis. New exam…
We characterize $k-$smoothness of an element on the unit sphere of a finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach space. Then we study $k-$smoothness of an operator $T \in \mathbb{L}(\ell_{\infty}^n,\mathbb{Y}),$ where $\mathbb{Y}$ is a two-dimensional Banach space with the additional condition that $T$ attains norm at each extreme point of $B_{\ell_{\infty}^{n}}.$ We also characterize $k-$smoothness of an operator defined between $\ell_{\infty}^3$ and $\ell_{1}^3.$
We consider topological invariants on compact spaces related to the sizes of discrete subspaces (spread), densities of subspaces, Lindelof degree of subspaces, irredundant families of clopen sets and others and look at the following associations between compact topological spaces and Banach spaces: a compact K induces a Banach space C(K) of real valued continuous functions on K with the supremum norm; a Banach space X induces a compact space - the dual ball with the weak* topology. We inquire on how topological invariants on K and the dual ball are linked to the sizes of biorthogonal systems a…
Let $X$ be a finite-dimensional normed space and let $Y \subseteq X$ be its proper linear subspace. The set of all minimal projections from $X$ to $Y$ is a convex subset of the space all linear operators from $X$ to $X$ and we can consider its affine dimension. We establish several results on the possible values of this dimension. We prove optimal upper bounds in terms of the dimensions of $X$ and $Y$. Moreover, we improve these estimates in the polyhedral normed spaces for an open and dense subset of subspaces of the given dimension. As a consequence, in the polyhedral normed spaces a minimal…
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for when a sequence of finite dimensional subspaces (X_n) can be blocked to be a skipped blocking decompositon (SBD). These are very similar to known results about blocking of biorthogonal sequences. A separable space $X$ has PCP, if and only if, every norming decomposition (X_n) can be blocked to be a boundedly complete SBD. Every boundedly complete SBD is a JT-decomposition.
Relatively recently it was proved that if $Γ$ is an arbitrary set, then any equivalent norm on $c_0(Γ)$ can be approximated uniformly on bounded sets by polyhedral norms and $C^\infty$ smooth norms, with arbitrary precision. We extend this result to more classes of spaces having uncountable symmetric bases, such as preduals of the `discrete' Lorentz spaces $d(w,1,Γ)$, and certain symmetric Nakano spaces and Orlicz spaces. We also show that, given an arbitrary ordinal number $α$, there exists a scattered compact space $K$ having Cantor-Bendixson height at least $α$, such that every equivalent n…
Let ${\mathcal H}$ be a complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal B}({\mathcal H})$ be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on ${\mathcal H}$. For a positive integer $k$ less than the dimension of ${\mathcal H}$ and ${\mathbf A} = (A_1, \dots, A_m)\in {\mathcal B}({\mathcal H})^m$, the joint $k$-numerical range $W_k({\mathbf A})$ is the set of $(α_1, \dots, α_m) \in{\mathbb C}^m$ such that $α_i = \sum_{j = 1}^k \langle A_ix_j, x_j\rangle$ for an orthonormal set $\{x_1, \ldots, x_k\}$ in ${\mathcal H}$. Relations between the geometric properties of $W_k({\mathbf A})$ and the algebraic and…
