A finite-dimensional analogue of the known Gordon-Lewis constant of a Banach space X is introduced; in its definition are used only finite rank operators. It is shown that there exist Banach spaces such that the standard Gordon-Lewis constant of X is finite and its finite-dimensional analogue GLfin(X) is infinite. Moreover, for any Banach space X of cotype 2 its finite-dimensional constant GLfin(X) is finite too.
We investigate relations between symmetrizations of quasi-Banach function spaces and constructions such as Calderon-Lozanovskii spaces, pointwise product spaces and pointwise multipliers. We show that under reasonable assumptions the symmetrization commutes with these operations. We determine also the spaces of pointwise multipliers between Lorentz spaces and Cesaro spaces. Developed methods may be regarded as an arithmetic of quasi-Banach function spaces and proofs of Theorems 3, 4 and 6 give a kind of tutorial for these methods. Finally, the above results will be used in proofs of some facto…
Let $A$ be a Banach algebra with a bounded left approximate identity $\{e_λ\}_{λ\inΛ}$, let $π$ be a continuous representation of $A$ on a Banach space $X$, and let $S$ be a non-empty subset of $X$ such that $\lim_λπ(e_λ)s=s$ uniformly on $S$. If $S$ is bounded, or if $\{e_λ\}_{λ\inΛ}$ is commutative, then we show that there exist $a\in A$ and maps $x_n: S\to X$ for $n\geq 1$ such that $s=π(a^n)x_n(s)$ for all $n\geq 1$ and $s\in S$. The properties of $a\in A$ and the maps $x_n$, as produced by the constructive proof, are studied in some detail. The results generalize previous simultaneous fac…
For Banach left and right module actions, we extend some propositions from Lau and $\ddot{U}lger$ into general situations and we establish the relationships between topological centers of module actions. We also introduce the new concepts as $Lw^*w$-property and $Rw^*w$-property for Banach $A-bimodule$ $B$ and we obtain some conclusions in the topological center of module actions and Arens regularity of Banach algebras. we also study some factorization properties of left module actions and we find some relations of them and topological centers of module actions. For Banach algebra $A$, we exte…
A Banach space X is superreflexive if each Banach space Y that is finitely representable in X is reflexive. Superreflexivity is known to be equivalent to J-convexity and to the non-existence of uniformly bounded factorizations of the summation operators S_n through X. We give a quantitative formulation of this equivalence. This can in particular be used to find a factorization of S_n through X, given a factorization of S_N through [L_2,X], where N is `large' compared to n.
The well-known factorization theorem of Lozanovski{\u ı} may be written in the form $L^{1}\equiv E\odot E^{\prime}$, where $\odot $ means the pointwise product of Banach ideal spaces. A natural generalization of this problem would be the question when one can factorize $F$ through $E$, i.e., when $F\equiv E\odot M(E, F) \,$, where $M(E, F) $ is the space of pointwise multipliers from $E$ to $F$. Properties of $M(E, F) $ were investigated in our earlier paper [KLM12] and here we collect and prove some properties of the construction $E\odot F$. The formulas for pointwise product of Calderón-Loza…
We study exponential factorization of invertible matrices over unital complex Banach algebras. In particular, we prove that every invertible matrix with entries in the algebra of holomorphic functions on a closed bordered Riemann surface can be written as a product of two exponents of matrices over this algebra. Our result extends similar results proved earlier in [KS] and [L] for $2\times 2$ matrices.
If $ϕ$ is a submeasure satisfying an appropriate lower estimate we give a quantitative result on the total mass of a measure $μ$ satisfying $0\leμ\leϕ.$ We give a dual result for supermeasures and then use these results to investigate convexity on non-locally convex quasi-Banach lattices. We then show how to use these results to extend some factorization theorems due to Pisier to the setting of quasi-Banach spaces. We conclude by showing that if $X$ is a quasi-Banach space of cotype two then any operator $T:C(Ω)\to X$ is 2-absolutely summing and factors through a Hilbert space and discussing g…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an operator $A:X\to Y$ on a Banach space having a shrinking FDD to factor through a Banach space $Z$ such that the Szlenk index of $Z$ is equal to the Szlenk index of $A$. We also prove that for every ordinal $ξ\in (0, ω_1)\setminus\{ω^η: η<ω_1\text{\ a limit ordinal}\}$, there exists a Banach space $\mathfrak{G}_ξ$ having a shrinking basis and Szlenk index $ω^ξ$ such that for any separable Banach space $X$ and any operator $A:X\to Y$ having Szlenk index less than $ω^ξ$, $A$ factors through a subspace and through a quotient of $\mathfrak{G}_ξ$, a…
The main purpose of this paper is the study of a~new class of summing multilinear operators acting from the product of Banach lattices with some nontrivial lattice convexity. A~mixed Pietsch-Maurey-Rosenthal type factorization theorem for these operators is proved under weaker convexity requirements than the ones that are needed in the Maurey-Rosenthal factorization through products of $L^q$-spaces. A~by-product of our factorization is an extension of multilinear operators defined by a~$q$-concavity type property to a~product of special Banach function lattices which inherit some lattice-geome…
We introduce the concept of strategically reproducible bases in Banach spaces and show that operators which have large diagonal with respect to strategically reproducible bases are factors of the identity. We give several examples of classical Banach spaces in which the Haar system is strategically reproducible: multi-parameter Lebesgue spaces, mixed-norm Hardy spaces and most significantly the space $L^1$. Moreover, we show the strategical reproducibility is inherited by unconditional sums.
In this paper, we study the Arens regularity properties of module actions and we extend some proposition from Baker, Dales, Lau and others into general situations. For Banach $A-bimodule$ $B$, let $Z_1(A^{**})$, ${Z}^\ell_{B^{**}}(A^{**})$ and ${Z}^\ell_{A^{**}}(B^{**})$ be the topological centers of second dual of Banach algebra $A$, left module action $π_\ell:~A\times B\rightarrow B$ and right module action $π_r:~B\times A\rightarrow B$, respectively. We establish some relationships between them and factorization properties of $A^*$ and $B^*$. We search some necessary and sufficient conditio…
In this article, we introduce the notion of $p$-$(DPL)$ sets.\ Also, a factorization result for differentiable mappings through Dunford-Pettis $p$-convergent operators is investigated.\ Namely, if $ X ,Y $ are real Banach spaces and $U$ is an open convex subset of $X,$ then we obtain that, given a differentiable mapping $f: U\rightarrow Y$ its derivative $f^{\prime}$ takes $U$-bounded sets into $p$-$(DPL)$ sets if and only if it happens $f=g\circ S,$ where $S$ is a Dunford-Pettis $p$-convergent operator from $X$ into a suitable Banach space $Z$ and $g:S(U)\rightarrow Y$ is a Gâteaux differenti…
We show that the non-separable Banach space $SL^\infty$ is primary. This is achieved by directly solving the infinite dimensional factorization problem in $SL^\infty$. In particular, we bypass Bourgain's localization method.
We characterize the holomorphic mappings $f$ between complex Banach spaces that may be written in the form $f=T\circ g$, where $g$ is another holomorphic mapping and $T$ belongs to a closed surjective operator ideal.
We introduce algebras which are inductive limits of Banach spaces and carry inequalities which are counterparts of the inequality for the norm in a Banach algebra. We then define an associated Wiener algebra, and prove the corresponding version of the well-known Wiener theorem. Finally, we consider factorization theory in these algebra, and in particular, in the associated Wiener algebra.
We investigate weak amenability of the Banach algebra A(X) of approximable operators on a Banach space X and its relation to factorization properties of operators in A(X). We show that if A(X) is weakly amenable, then either A(X) is self-induced (a nice factorization property), or X is very special, combining some of the exotic properties of the spaces of Gowers and Maurey and of Pisier. In the class of self-induced Banach algebras we show that weak amenability is preserved under an equivalence of Morita type. Using this we extend some results of A. Blanco about weak amenability of A(X).
We study the class of $(p,q)$-regular operators between quasi-Banach lattices. In particular, a representation of this class as the dual of a certain tensor norm for Banach lattices is given. We also provide some factorization results for $(p,q)$-regular operators yielding new Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund type inequalities for Banach function spaces. An extension theorem for $(q, \infty)$-regular operators defined on a subspace of $L_q$ is also given.
Given a Banach space~$X$ with an unconditional basis, we consider the following question: does the identity on~$X$ factor through every operator on~$X$ with large diagonal relative to the unconditional basis? We show that on Gowers' unconditional Banach space, there exists an operator for which the answer to the question is negative. By contrast, for any operator on the mixed-norm Hardy spaces $H^p(H^q)$, where $1 \leq p,q < \infty$, with the bi-parameter Haar system, this problem always has a positive solution. The spaces $L^p, 1 < p < \infty$, were treated first by Andrew~[{\em Studia Math.}…
For a Banach left module action, we will extend some propositions from Lau and $\ddot{U}$lger and others into general situations and we establish the relationships between topological centers of the left module action with the multiplier and factorization properties of left module actions. We have some applications in the dual groups.
In this paper, we will study some Arens regularity properties of module actions. Let $B$ be a Banach $A-bimodule$ and let ${Z}^\ell_{B^{**}}(A^{**})$ and ${Z}^\ell_{A^{**}}(B^{**})$ be the topological centers of the left module action $π_\ell:~A\times B\rightarrow B$ and the right module action $π_r:~B\times A\rightarrow B$, respectively. In this paper, we will extend some problems from topological center of second dual of Banach algebra $A$, $Z_1(A^{**})$, into spaces ${Z}^\ell_{B^{**}}(A^{**})$ and ${Z}^\ell_{A^{**}}(B^{**})$. We investigate some relationships between ${Z}_1({A^{**}})$ and t…
The main concern of this note is the Moore-Penrose inverse in the context of Banach spaces and algebras. Especially attention will be given to a particular class of elements with the aforementioned inverse, namely EP Banach space operators and Banach algebra elements, which will be studied and characterized extending well-known results obtained in the frame of Hilbert space operators and $C^*$-algebra elements.
The notions of $p$-convexity and $q$-concavity are mostly known because of their importance as a tool in the study of isomorphic properties of Banach lattices, but they also play a role in several results involving linear maps between Banach spaces and Banach lattices. In this paper we introduce Lipschitz versions of these concepts, dealing with maps between metric spaces and Banach lattices, and start by proving nonlinear versions of two well-known factorization theorems through $L_p$ spaces due to Maurey/Nikishin and Krivine. We also show that a Lipschitz map from a metric space into a Banac…
Several characterizations of EP and normal Moore-Penrose invertible Banach algebra elements will be considered. The Banach space operator case will be also studied. The results of the present article will extend well known facts obtained in the frames of matrices and Hilbert space operators.
Let $X$ be a Banach space, $Σ$ be a $σ$-algebra, and $m:Σ\to X$ be a (countably additive) vector measure. It is a well known consequence of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczýnski factorization procedure that there exist a reflexive Banach space $Y$, a vector measure $\tilde{m}:Σ\to Y$ and an injective operator $J:Y \to X$ such that $m$ factors as $m=J\circ \tilde{m}$. We elaborate some theory of factoring vector measures and their integration operators with the help of the isometric version of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczýnski factorization procedure. Along this way, we sharpen a result of Okad…
In this article poles, isolated spectral points, group, Drazin and Koliha-Drazin invertible elements in the context of quotient Banach algebras or in ranges of (not necessarily continuous) homomorphism between complex unital Banach algebras will be characterized using Fredholm and Riesz Banach algebra elements. Calkin algebras on Banach and Hilbert spaces will be also considered.
The weighted Moore-Penrose inverse will be introduced and studied in the context of Banach algebras. In addition, weighted EP Banach algebra elements will be characterized. The Banach space operator case will be also considered.
Given a Banach Algebra $A$ and $a\in A$, several relations among the Drazin spectrum of $a$ and the Drazin spectra of the multiplication operators $L_a$ and $R_a$ will be stated. The Banach space operator case will be also examined. Furthermore, a characterization of the Drazin spectrum will be considered.
Consider two continuous linear operators $T\colon X_1(μ)\to Y_1(ν)$ and $S\colon X_2(μ)\to Y_2(ν)$ between Banach function spaces related to different $σ$-finite measures $μ$ and $ν$. We characterize by means of weighted norm inequalities when $T$ can be strongly factored through $S$, that is, when there exist functions $g$ and $h$ such that $T(f)=gS(hf)$ for all $f\in X_1(μ)$. For the case of spaces with Schauder basis our characterization can be improved, as we show when $S$ is for instance the Fourier operator, or the Cesàro operator. Our aim is to study the case when the map $T$ is besides…
Properties of the inverse along an element in rings with an involution, Banach algebras and $C^*$-alegbras will be studied unifying known expressions concerning generalized inverses.
We prove a basic property of continuous multilinear mappings between topological vector spaces, from which we derive an easy proof of the fact that a multilinear mapping (and a polynomial) between topological vector spaces is weakly continuous on weakly bounded sets if and only if it is weakly {\it uniformly\/} continuous on weakly bounded sets. This result was obtained in 1983 by Aron, Hervés and Valdivia for polynomials between Banach spaces, and it also holds if the weak topology is replaced by a coarser one. However, we show that it need not be true for a stronger topology, thus answering …
Let $1\le p\le q<\infty$ and let $X$ be a $p$-convex Banach function space over a $σ$-finite measure $μ$. We combine the structure of the spaces $L^p(μ)$ and $L^q(ξ)$ for constructing the new space $S_{X_p}^{\,q}(ξ)$, where $ξ$ is a probability Radon measure on a certain compact set associated to $X$. We show some of its properties, and the relevant fact that every $q$-summing operator $T$ defined on $X$ can be continuously (strongly) extended to $S_{X_p}^{\,q}(ξ)$. This result turns out to be a mixture of the Pietsch and Maurey-Rosenthal factorization theorems, which provide (strong) factoriz…
Let $X^*$ denote a Banach space with a subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder basis satisfying condition~\eqref{eq:condition-c}. We show that for any operator $T : X^*\to X^*$, either $T(X^*)$ or $(I-T)(X^*)$ contains a subspace that is isomorphic to $X^*$ and complemented in $X^*$. Moreover, we prove that $\ell^p(X^*)$, $1\leq p \leq \infty$ is primary.
We show that if $T$ is an isometry (as metric spaces) from an open subgroup of the group of the invertible elements in a unital semisimple commutative Banach algebra onto an open subgroup of the group of the invertible elements in a unital Banach algebra, then $T(1)^{-1}T$ is an isometrical group isomorphism. In particular, $T(1)^{-1}T$ is extended to an isometrical real algebra isomorphism from $A$ onto $B$.
We show that every subsymmetric Schauder basis $(e_j)$ of a Banach space $X$ has the factorization property, i.e. $I_X$ factors through every bounded operator $T\colon X\to X$ with a $δ$-large diagonal (that is $\inf_j |\langle Te_j, e_j^*\rangle| \geq δ> 0$, where the $(e_j^*)$ are the biorthogonal functionals to $(e_j)$). Even if $X$ is a non-separable dual space with a subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder basis $(e_j)$, we prove that if $(e_j)$ is non-$\ell^1$-splicing (there is no disjointly supported $\ell^1$-sequence in $X$), then $(e_j)$ has the factorization property. The same is true for $\…
Given unital Banach algebras $A$ and $B$ and elements $a\in A$ and $b\in B$, the Drazin spectrun of $a\otimes b\in A\overline{\otimes} B$ will be fully characterized, where $A\overline{\otimes} B$ is a Banach algebra that is the completion of $A\otimes B$ with respect to a uniform crossnorm. To this end, however, first the isolated points of the spectrum of $a\otimes b\in A\overline{\otimes} B$ need to be characterized. On the other hand, given Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ and Banach space operators $S\in L(X)$ and $T\in L(Y)$, using similar arguments the Drazin spectrum of $τ_{ST}\in L(L(Y,X))$,…
Generalizing earlier results about the set of idempotents in a Banach algebra, or of self-adjoint idempotents in a $C^*$-algebra, we announce constructions of nice connecting paths in the connected components of the set of elements in a Banach algebra, or of self-adjoint elements in a $C^*$-algebra, that satisfy a given polynomial equation, without multiple roots. In particular, we will prove that in the Banach algebra case every such non-central element lies on a complex line, all of whose points satisfy the given equation. We also formulate open questions.
We work in an ordered Banach space with closed generating positive cone. We show that a positive compact operator has zero spectral radius or a positive eigenvector with the corresponding eigenvalue equal to the spectral radius.
The conditions on a Banach space, $E$, under which the algebra, $\mathcal{K}(E)$, of compact operators on $E$ is right flat or homologically unital are investigated. These homological properties are related to factorization in the algebra and it is shown that, for $\mathcal{K}(E)$, they are closely associated with the approximation property for $E$. The class of spaces, $E$, such that $\mathcal{K}(E)$ is known to be right flat and homologically unital is extended to include spaces which do not have the bounded compact approximation property.
In this work, given a unital Banach algebra $\A$ and $a\in \A$ such that $a$ has a Moore-Penrose inverse $a^\dagger$, it will be characterized when $aa^\dagger-a^\dagger a$ is invertible. A particular subset of this class of objects will also be studied. In addition, perturbations of this class of elements will be studied. Finally, the Banach space operator case will be also considered.
Let $\mathbb{Y}$ be either an Orlicz sequence space or a Marcinkiewicz sequence space. We take advantage of the recent advances in the theory of factorization of the identity carried on in [R. Lechner, Subsymmetric weak* Schauder bases and factorization of the identity, arXiv:1804.01372 [math.FA]] to provide conditions on $\mathbb{Y}$ that ensure that, for any $1\le p\le\infty$, the infinite direct sum of $\mathbb{Y}$ in the sense of $\ell_p$ is a primary Banach space, enlarging this way the list of Banach spaces that are known to be primary.
Given a (not necessarily continuous) homomorphism between Banach algebras $\T\colon\A\to\B$, an element $a\in\A$ will be said to be B-Fredholm (respectively generalized B-Fredholm) relative to $\T$, if $\T(a)\in \B$ is Drazin invertible (respectively Koliha-Drazin invertible). In this article, the aforementioned elements will be characterized and their main properties will be studied. In addition, perturbation properties will be also considered.
We show that if $T$ is an isometry (as metric spaces) between the invertible groups of unital Banach algebras, then $T$ is extended to a surjective real-linear isometry up to translation between the two Banach algebras. Furthermore if the underling algebras are closed unital standard operator algebras, $(T(e_A))^{-1}T$ is extended to a surjective real algebra isomorphism; if $T$ is a surjective isometry from the invertible group of a unital commutative Banach algebra onto that of a unital semisimple Banach algebra, then $(T(e_A))^{-1}T$ is extended to a surjective isometrical real algebra isom…
A Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point) of a Banach space is a norm one element $x$ for which every point in the unit ball (resp.~element $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance 2 from $x$. A Banach space has the well-known Daugavet property (resp.~diametral local diameter 2 property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point). This paper complements the article "Delta- and Daugavet-points in Banach spaces" by T. A. Abrahamsen, R. Haller, V. Lima, and K. Pirk, where the study of the existence of Daugavet- and $Δ$-po…
In this paper we introduce the quadratic weighted geometric mean for invertible elements x, y in a Hermitian unital Banach star-algebra and provide some inequalities for this mean under various assumptions for the elements involved.
We give an example of a positive element $a$ in some ordered Banach algebra $A$ such that its spectrum is equal to $\{1\}$ and it is not greater than or equal to the unit element of $A$.
A banach space X is a normed vector space, which is complete with respect to the metric induced by the norm. Given a bounded linear operator T acting on a banach space X, T is said to attain its norm if there is a unit vector z in X, such that the norm of Tz equals the norm of T. The existence of an infinite dimensional banach space X, in which each bounded linear operator acting on X attains its norm, is still undetermined. This question was posed by M.I. Ostrovskii at St. John's University. In this paper we show that if an infinite dimensional banach space is considered over GF(2), then it i…
