We show that if a Banach lattice is projective, then every bounded sequence that can be mapped by a homomorphism onto the basis of $c_0$ must contain an $\ell_1$-subsequence. As a consequence, if Banach lattices $\ell_p$ or $FBL[E]$ are projective, then $p=1$ or $E$ has the Schur property, respectively. On the other hand, we show that $C(K)$ is projective whenever $K$ is an absolute neighbourhood retract, answering a question by de Pagter and Wickstead.
We show that the free Banach lattice $\mathrm{FBL}(A)$ may be constructed as the completion of $\mathrm{FVL}(A)$ with respect to the maximal lattice seminorm $ν$ on $\mathrm{FVL}(A)$ with $ν(a)\le 1$ for all $a\in A$. We present a similar construction for the free Banach lattice $\mathrm{FBL}[E]$ generated by a Banach space $E$.
The construction of the free Banach lattice generated by a real Banach space is extended to the complex setting. It is shown that for every complex Banach space $E$ there is a complex Banach lattice $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ containing a linear isometric copy of $E$ and satisfying the following universal property: for every complex Banach lattice $X_{\mathbb C}$, every operator $T:E\rightarrow X_{\mathbb C}$ admits a unique lattice homomorphic extension $\hat{T}:FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]\rightarrow X_{\mathbb C}$ with $\|\hat{T}\|=\|T\|$. The free complex Banach lattice $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ is shown to ha…
We investigate the structure of the free $p$-convex Banach lattice $FBL^{(p)}[E]$ over a Banach space $E$. After recalling why such a free lattice exists, and giving a convenient functional representation of it, we focus our study on how properties of an operator $T:E\rightarrow F$ between Banach spaces transfer to the associated lattice homomorphism $\overline{T}:FBL^{(p)}[E]\rightarrow FBL^{(p)}[F]$. Particular consideration is devoted to the case when the operator $T$ is an isomorphic embedding, which leads us to examine extension properties of operators into $\ell_p$, and several classical…
In this article we deal with the free Banach lattice $FBL\langle \mathbb{L} \rangle$ generated by a lattice $\mathbb{L}$. We prove that if $FBL\langle \mathbb{L} \rangle$ is projective then $\mathbb{L}$ has a maximum and a minimum. On the other hand, we show that if $\mathbb{L}$ has maximum and minimum then $FBL\langle \mathbb{L} \rangle$ is $2$-lattice isomorphic to a $C(K)$-space. As a consequence, $FBL\langle \mathbb{L} \rangle$ is projective if and only if it is lattice isomorphic to a $C(K)$-space with $K$ being an absolute neighborhood retract. As an application, we characterize those li…
In this article we deal with the free Banach lattice generated by a lattice and its behavior with respect to subspaces. In general, any lattice embedding $i\colon \mathbb{L} \longrightarrow \mathbb{M}$ between two lattices $\mathbb{L} \subseteq \mathbb{M}$ induces a Banach lattice homomorphism $\hat \imath\colon FBL \langle \mathbb{L} \rangle \longrightarrow FBL \langle \mathbb{M}\rangle$ between the corresponding free Banach lattices. We show that this mapping $\hat \imath$ might not be an isometric embedding neither an isomorphic embedding. In order to provide sufficient conditions for $\hat…
In this paper, we study octahedral norms in free Banach lattices $FBL[E]$ generated by a Banach space $E$. We prove that if $E$ is an $L_1(μ)$-space, a predual of von Neumann algebra, a predual of a JBW$^*$-triple, the dual of an $M$-embedded Banach space, the disc algebra or the projective tensor product under some hypothesis, then the norm of $FBL[E]$ is octahedral. We get the analogous result when the topological dual $E^*$ of $E$ is almost square. We finish the paper by proving that the norm of the free Banach lattice generated by a Banach space of dimension $ \geq 2$ is nowhere Fréchet di…
We study the $H^1$-projective Banach spaces. We prove that they have the Analytic Radon-Nikodym Property, and that they are cotype 2 spaces which satisfy Grothendieck's Theorem. We show also that the ultraproduct of $H^1$-projective spaces is $H^1$-projective. Other results are also discussed.
We define and prove the existence of free Banach lattices in the category of Banach lattices and contractive lattice homomorphisms and establish some of their fundamental properties. We give much more detailed results about their structure in the case that there are only a finite number of generators and give several Banach lattice characterizations of the number of generators being, respectively, one, finite or countable. We define a Banach lattice $P$ to be projective if whenever $X$ is a Banach lattice, $J$ a closed ideal in $X$, $Q:X\to X/J$ the quotient map, $T:P\to X/J$ a linear lattice …
We show that $c_0$ is not a projective Banach lattice, answering a question of B. de Pagter and A. Wickstead. On the other hand, we show that $c_0$ is complemented in the free Banach lattice generated by itself (seen as a Banach space). As a consequence, the free Banach lattice generated by $c_0$ is not projective.
Galego and Samuel showed that if $K,L$ are metrizable, compact, Hausdorff spaces, then $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_πC(L)$ is $c_0$-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if $K$ and $L$ are both scattered. We remove the hypothesis of metrizability from their result, and extend it from the case of the two-fold projective tensor product to the general $n$-fold projective tensor product to show that for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and compact, Hausdorff spaces $K_1, \ldots, K_n$, $\widehat{\otimes}_{π, i=1}^n C(K_i)$ is $c_0$-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if each $…
A Banach space $E$ is said to be injective if for every Banach space $X$ and every subspace $Y$ of $X$ every operator $t:Y\to E$ has an extension $T:X\to E$. We say that $E$ is $\aleph$-injective (respectively, universally $\aleph$-injective) if the preceding condition holds for Banach spaces $X$ (respectively $Y$) with density less than a given uncountable cardinal $\aleph$. We perform a study of $\aleph$-injective and universally $\aleph$-injective Banach spaces which extends the basic case where $\aleph=\aleph_1$ is the first uncountable cardinal. When dealing with the corresponding "isomet…
In this paper we study the structure of the set $\mbox{Hom}(X,\mathbb{R})$ of all lattice homomorphisms from a Banach lattice $X$ into $\mathbb{R}$. Using the relation among lattice homomorphisms and disjoint families, we prove that the topological dual of the free Banach lattice $FBL(A)$ generated by a set $A$ contains a disjoint family of cardinality $2^{|A|}$, answering a question of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. We also deal with norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms. For classical Banach lattices, as $c_0$, $L_p$-, and $C(K)$-spaces, every lattice homomorphism on it attains its norm, wh…
We show that all the symmetric projective tensor products of a Banach space $X$ have the Daugavet property provided $X$ has the Daugavet property and either $X$ is an $L_1$-predual (i.e.\ $X^*$ is isometric to an $L_1$-space) or $X$ is a vector-valued $L_1$-space. In the process of proving it, we get a number of results of independent interest. For instance, we characterise "localised" versions of the Daugavet property (i.e.\ Daugavet points and $Δ$-points recently introduced) for $L_1$-preduals in terms of the extreme points of the topological dual, a result which allows to characterise a pol…
For a tuple $A=(A_0, A_1, ..., A_n)$ of elements in a unital Banach algebra ${\mathcal B}$, its {\em projective spectrum} $p(A)$ is defined to be the collection of $z=[z_0, z_1, ..., z_n]\in \pn$ such that $A(z)=z_0A_0+z_1A_1+... +z_nA_n$ is not invertible in ${\mathcal B}$. The pre-image of $p(A)$ in ${\cc}^{n+1}$ is denoted by $P(A)$. When ${\mathcal B}$ is the $k\times k$ matrix algebra $M_k(\cc)$, the projective spectrum is a projective hypersurface. In infinite dimensional cases, projective spectrums can be very complicated, but also have some properties similar to that of hypersurfaces. …
We characterize the positive Schur property in the positive projective tensor products of Banach lattices, we establish the connection with the weak operator topology and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the space of regular multilinear operators/homogeneous polynomials taking values in a Dedekind complete Banach lattice to have the positive Schur property.
We study the property of being strongly weakly compactly generated (and some relatives) in projective tensor products of Banach spaces. Our main result is as follows. Let $1<p,q<\infty$ be such that $1/p+1/q\geq 1$. Let $X$ (resp., $Y$) be a Banach space with a countable unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition having a disjoint lower $p$-estimate (resp., $q$-estimate). If $X$ and $Y$ are strongly weakly compactly generated, then so is its projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_πY$.

A quojection (projective limit of Banach spaces with surjective linking mappings) without infinite dimensional Banach subspaces is constructed. This results answers a question posed by G.Metafune and V.B.Moscatelli.
We prove a general result on the factorization of matrix-valued analytic functions. We deduce that if $(E_0,E_1)$ and $(F_0,F_1)$ are interpolation pairs with dense intersections, then under some conditions on the spaces $E_0$, $E_1$, $F_0$ and $F_1$, we have $$ [E_0\hat\otimes F_0,E_1\hat\otimes F_1]_t= [E_0, E_1]_t\hat\otimes[F_0, F_1]_t, 0 < t< 1.$$ We find also conditions on the spaces $E_0$, $E_1$, $F_0$ and $F_1$, so that the following holds $$ [E_0\wcheck\otimes F_0,E_1\wcheck\otimes F_1]_t= [E_0,E_1]_t\wcheck\otimes [F_0,F_1]_t, 0 <t< 1.$$ Some applications of these results are also co…
We characterize projective and injective Banach modules in approximate terms, generalizing thereby a characterization of contractible Banach algebras given by F. Ghahramani and R. J. Loy. As a corollary, we show that each uniformly approximately amenable Banach algebra is amenable. Some applications to homological dimensions of Banach modules and algebras are also given.
We investigate the relationship between the diagonal of the Fremlin projective tensor product of a Banach lattice $E$ with itself and the 2-concavification of $E$.
We show that for a Banach algebra $A$ with a bounded approximate identity, the amenability of the projective tensor product of A with A, the amenability of the projective tensor product of A with A^{op}and the amenability of A are equivalent. Also if A is a closed ideal in a commutative Banach algebra B, then the weak amenability of the projective tensor product of A and B implies the weak amenability of A.
We study the projectivity of the free Banach lattice generated by a lattice $\mathbb{L}$ in two cases: when the lattice is finite, and when the lattice is an infinite linearly ordered set. We prove that in the first case it is projective while in the second case, if the linear order contains either an increasing sequence without upper bounds or a decreasing sequence without lower bounds, then it is not projective.
Let $X$ be a complex Banach space and $x,y\in X$. By definition, we say that $x$ is Birkhoff-James orthogonal to $y$ if $ \|x+λy\|_{X} \geq \|x\|_{X}$ for all $λ\in \mathbb{C}$. We prove that $x$ is Birkhoff-James orthogonal to $y$ if and only if there exists a semi-inner product $φ$ on $X$ such that $\|φ\| = 1$, $φ(x,x)=\|x\|^2$ and $φ(x,y)=0$. A similar result holds for $C^*$-algebras. A key point in our approach to orthogonality is the representations of bounded bilinear maps via projective tensor product spaces.
In this article, we study the relationship between \(p\)-\((V)\) subsets and p-\(V^*\) subsets of dual spaces. We investigate the Banach space X with the property that adjoint every \(p\)-convergent operator \(T: X \rightarrow Y\) is weakly \(q\)-compact, for every Banach space \(Y\). Moreover, we define the notion of \(q\)-reciprocal Dunford-Pettis\(\^*\)property of order \(p\) on Banach spaces and obtain a characterization of Banach spaces with this property. The stability of reciprocal Dunford-Pettis property of order \(p\) for the projective tensor product is given.
We introduce in non-coordinate presentation the notions of a quantum algebra and of a quantum module over such an algebra. Then we give the definition of a projective quantum module and of a free quantum module, the latter as a particular case of the notion of a free object in a rigged category. (Here we say "quantum" instead of frequently used protean adjective "operator"). After this we discuss the general connection between projectivity and freeness. Then we show that for a Banach quantum algebra A and a Banach quantum space E the Banach quantum A-module $A\widehat\otimes_{op}E$ is free, wh…
We study octahedral norms in the space of bounded linear operators between Banach spaces. In fact, we prove that $L(X,Y)$ has octahedral norm whenever $X^*$ and $Y$ have octahedral norm. As a consequence the space of operators $L(\ell_1 ,X)$ has octahedral norm if, and only if, $X$ has octahedral norm. These results also allows us to get the stability of strong diameter 2 property for projective tensor products of Banach spaces, which is an improvement of the known results about the size of nonempty relatively weakly open subsets in the unit ball of the projective tensor product of Banach spac…
We prove the existence of free objects in certain subcategories of Banach lattices, including $p$-convex Banach lattices, Banach lattices with upper $p$-estimates, and AM-spaces. From this we immediately deduce that projectively universal objects exist in each of these subcategories, extending results of Leung, Li, Oikhberg and Tursi (\emph{Israel J.\ Math.}~2019). In the $p$-con\-vex and AM-space cases, we are able to explicitly identify the norms of the free Banach lattices, and we conclude by investigating the structure of these norms in connection with nonlinear $p$-summing maps.
Suppose that $E$ is a uniformly complete vector lattice and $p_1,..., p_n$ are positive reals. We prove that the diagonal of the Fremlin projective tensor product of $E_{(p_1)},..., E_{(p_n)}$ can be identified with $E_{(p)}$ where $p = p_1+...+p_n$ and $E_{(p)}$ stands for the $p$-concavification of $E$. We also provide a variant of this result for Banach lattices. This extends the main result of [BBPTT].
We define and study the metric, or extreme version of the notion of a projective normed module. The relevant definition takes into account the exact value of the norm of the module in question, in contrast with the standard known definition that is formulated in terms of norm topology. After some preliminary observations and discussion of the case where the base normed algebra A is just the field of complex numbers, we concentrate on the case of the next degree of complication, where A is a sequence algebra, satisfying some natural conditions. The main results give a full characterization of e…
In this work, we study the volume ratio of the projective tensor products $\ell^n_p\otimes_π\ell_q^n\otimes_π\ell_r^n$ with $1\leq p\leq q \leq r \leq \infty$. We obtain asymptotic formulas that are sharp in almost all cases. As a consequence of our estimates, these spaces allow for a nearly Euclidean decomposition of Kashin type whenever $1\leq p \leq q\leq r \leq 2$ or $1\leq p \leq 2 \leq r \leq \infty$ and $q=2$. Also, from the Bourgain-Milman bound on the volume ratio of Banach spaces in terms of their cotype $2$ constant, we obtain information on the cotype of these $3$-fold projective t…
The paper investigates the algebraic properties of Banach algebras of complex-valued functions of bounded variation on a finite interval. It is proved that such algebras have Bass stable rank one and are projective free if they do not contain nontrivial idempotents. These properties are derived from a new result on the vanishing of the second Čech cohomology group of the polynomially convex hull of a continuum of a finite linear measure.
A discrete group $\G$ is called rigidly symmetric if for every $C^*$-algebra $\A$ the projective tensor product $\ell^1(\G)\widehat\otimes\A$ is a symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra. For such a group we show that the twisted crossed product $\ell^1_{α,ø}(\G;\A)$ is also a symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra, for every twisted action $(α,ø)$ of $\G$ in a $C^*$-algebra $\A$\,. We extend this property to other types of decay, replacing the $\ell^1$-condition. We also make the connection with certain classes of twisted kernels, used in a theory of integral operators involving group $2$-cocycles. The algebra …
We introduce the $H^1$-projective property, and use it to construct a Banach space $X$ such that the natural map $J:H^2(X)\otimes H^2(X) -> H^1(X\otimes X)$ is not onto.
In this paper, we will study some Arens regularity properties of module actions. Let $B$ be a Banach $A-bimodule$ and let ${Z}^\ell_{B^{**}}(A^{**})$ and ${Z}^\ell_{A^{**}}(B^{**})$ be the topological centers of the left module action $π_\ell:~A\times B\rightarrow B$ and the right module action $π_r:~B\times A\rightarrow B$, respectively. In this paper, we will extend some problems from topological center of second dual of Banach algebra $A$, $Z_1(A^{**})$, into spaces ${Z}^\ell_{B^{**}}(A^{**})$ and ${Z}^\ell_{A^{**}}(B^{**})$. We investigate some relationships between ${Z}_1({A^{**}})$ and t…
It is shown that for every $p\in (1,\infty)$ there exists a Banach space $X$ of finite cotype such that the projective tensor product $\ell_p\tp X$ fails to have finite cotype. More generally, if $p_1,p_2,p_3\in (1,\infty)$ satisfy $\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2}+\frac{1}{p_3}\le 1$ then $\ell_{p_1}\tp\ell_{p_2}\tp\ell_{p_3}$ does not have finite cotype. This is a proved via a connection to the theory of locally decodable codes.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a $C^*$-algebra, and consider the Banach algebra $\mathcal{A} \otimes_γ\mathcal{A}$, where $\otimes_γ$ denotes the projective Banach space tensor product; if $\mathcal{A}$ is commutative, this is the Varopoulos algebra $V_\mathcal{A}$. It has been an open problem for more than 35 years to determine precisely when $\mathcal{A} \otimes_γ\mathcal{A}$ is Arens regular. Even the situation for commutative $\mathcal{A}$, in particular the case $\mathcal{A} = \ell_\infty$, has remained unsolved. We solve this classical question for arbitrary $C^*$-algebras by using von Neumann alg…
