In this article we deal with the free Banach lattice $FBL\langle \mathbb{L} \rangle$ generated by a lattice $\mathbb{L}$. We prove that if $FBL\langle \mathbb{L} \rangle$ is projective then $\mathbb{L}$ has a maximum and a minimum. On the other hand, we show that if $\mathbb{L}$ has maximum and minimum then $FBL\langle \mathbb{L} \rangle$ is $2$-lattice isomorphic to a $C(K)$-space. As a consequence, $FBL\langle \mathbb{L} \rangle$ is projective if and only if it is lattice isomorphic to a $C(K)$-space with $K$ being an absolute neighborhood retract. As an application, we characterize those linearly ordered sets and Boolean algebras for which the corresponding free Banach lattice is projective.
In this book we study metric and topological versions of projectivity injectivity and flatness of Banach modules over Banach algebras. These two non-standard versions of Banach homology theories are studied in parallel under unified approach.
We study the projectivity of the free Banach lattice generated by a lattice $\mathbb{L}$ in two cases: when the lattice is finite, and when the lattice is an infinite linearly ordered set. We prove that in the first case it is projective while in the second case, if the linear order contains either an increasing sequence without upper bounds or a decreasing sequence without lower bounds, then it is not projective.
We find large classes of injective and projective $p$-multinormed spaces. In fact, these classes are universal, in the sense that every $p$-multinormed space embeds into (is a quotient of) an injective (resp. projective) $p$-multinormed space. As a consequence, we show that any $p$-multinormed space has a canonical representation as a subspace of a quotient of a Banach lattice.
We introduce in non-coordinate presentation the notions of a quantum algebra and of a quantum module over such an algebra. Then we give the definition of a projective quantum module and of a free quantum module, the latter as a particular case of the notion of a free object in a rigged category. (Here we say "quantum" instead of frequently used protean adjective "operator"). After this we discuss the general connection between projectivity and freeness. Then we show that for a Banach quantum algebra A and a Banach quantum space E the Banach quantum A-module $A\widehat\otimes_{op}E$ is free, wh…
The free Banach lattice over a Banach space is introduced and analyzed. This generalizes the concept of free Banach lattice over a set of generators, and allows us to study the Nakano property and the density character of non-degenerate intervals on these spaces, answering some recent questions of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. Moreover, an example of a Banach lattice which is weakly compactly generated as a lattice but not as a Banach space is exhibited, thus answering a question of J. Diestel.
We extend the well-known criterion of Lotz for the dual Radon-Nikodym property (RNP) of Banach lattices to finitely generated Banach $C(K)$-modules and Banach $C(K)$-modules of finite multiplicity. Namely, we prove that if $X$ is a Banach space from one of these classes then its Banach dual $X^\star$ has the RNP iff $X$ does not contain a closed subspace isomorphic to $\ell^1$.
We study the different ways in which a weakly compact set can generate a Banach lattice. Among other things, it is shown that in an order continuous Banach lattice $X$, the existence of a weakly compact set $K \subset X$ such that $X$ coincides with the band generated by $K$, implies that $X$ is WCG.
We prove that, when $2<p<\infty$, in the free Banach lattice generated by $\ell_p$ (respectively by $c_0$), the absolute values of the canonical basis form an $\ell_r$-sequence, where $\frac{1}{r} = \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{p}$ (respectively an $\ell_2$-sequence). In particular, in any Banach lattice, the absolute values of any $\ell_p$ sequence always have an upper $\ell_r$-estimate. Quite surprisingly, this implies that the free Banach lattices generated by the nonseparable $\ell_p(Γ)$ for $2<p<\infty$, as well as $c_0(Γ)$, are weakly compactly generated whereas this is not the case for $1\leq…
A Banach space $X$ is said to have the ball generated property (BGP) if every closed, bounded, convex subset of $X$ can be written as an intersection of finite unions of closed balls. In 2002 S. Basu proved that the BGP is stable under (infinite) $c_0$- and $\ell^p$-sums for $1<p<\infty$. We will show here that for any absolute, normalised norm $\|\cdot\|_E$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ satisfying a certain smoothness condition the direct sum $X\oplus_E Y$ of two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ with respect to $\|\cdot\|_E$ enjoys the BGP whenever $X$ and $Y$ have the BGP.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. We prove that the augmentation ideal in $L^1(G)$ is (algebraically) finitely-generated as a left ideal if and only if $G$ is finite. We then investigate weighted versions of this result, as well as a version for semigroup algebras. Weighted measure algebras are also considered. We are motivated by a recent conjecture of Dales and Żelazko, which states that a unital Banach algebra in which every maximal left ideal is finitely-generated is necessarily finite-dimensional. We prove that this conjecture holds for many of the algebras considered. Finally, we use t…
We show that $c_0$ is not a projective Banach lattice, answering a question of B. de Pagter and A. Wickstead. On the other hand, we show that $c_0$ is complemented in the free Banach lattice generated by itself (seen as a Banach space). As a consequence, the free Banach lattice generated by $c_0$ is not projective.
We introduce the free Banach lattice generated by a lattice L. We give an explicit description of it and we study some of its properties for the case when $\mathbb{L}$ is a linear order, like the countable chain condition.

We study delta-points in Banach spaces $h_{\mathcal{A},p}$ generated by adequate families $\mathcal A$ where $1 \le p < \infty$. In the case the familiy $\mathcal A$ is regular and $p=1,$ these spaces are known as combinatorial Banach spaces. When $p > 1$ we prove that neither $h_{\mathcal{A},p}$ nor its dual contain delta-points. Under the extra assumption that $\mathcal A$ is regular, we prove that the same is true when $p=1.$ In particular the Schreier spaces and their duals fail to have delta-points. If $\mathcal A$ consists of finite sets only we are able to rule out the existence of delt…
In this paper, we study octahedral norms in free Banach lattices $FBL[E]$ generated by a Banach space $E$. We prove that if $E$ is an $L_1(μ)$-space, a predual of von Neumann algebra, a predual of a JBW$^*$-triple, the dual of an $M$-embedded Banach space, the disc algebra or the projective tensor product under some hypothesis, then the norm of $FBL[E]$ is octahedral. We get the analogous result when the topological dual $E^*$ of $E$ is almost square. We finish the paper by proving that the norm of the free Banach lattice generated by a Banach space of dimension $ \geq 2$ is nowhere Fréchet di…

Given a domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and a collection of test functions $Ψ$ on $Ω$, we consider the complex-valued $Ψ$-Schur-Agler class associated to the pair $(Ω,\,Ψ)$. In this article, we characterize interpolating sequences for the associated Banach algebra of which the $Ψ$-Schur-Agler class is the closed unit ball. When $Ω$ is the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$ and the class of test function includes only the identity function on $\mathbb{D}$, the aforementioned algebra is the algebra of bounded holomorphic functions on $\mathbb{D}$ and in this case, our characte…
In this paper we introduce a discrete fractional resolvent family $\{S_{α,β}^n\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}_0}$ generated by a closed linear operator in a Banach space $X$ for a given $α,β>0.$ Moreover, we study its main properties and, as a consequence, we obtain a method to study the existence and uniqueness of the solutions to discrete fractional difference equations in a Banach space.
In this article we investigate the disjointly non-singular (DNS) operators. Following [8] we say that an operator $T$ from a Banach lattice $F$ into a Banach space $E$ is DNS, if no restriction of $T$ to a subspace generated by a disjoint sequence is strictly singular. We partially answer a question from [8] by showing that this class of operators forms an open subset of $L\left(F,E\right)$ as soon as $F$ is order continuous. Moreover, we show that in this case $T$ is DNS if and only if the norm topology is the minimal topology which is simultaneously stronger than the unbounded norm topology …
We present and study commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators with generalized quasi-radial pseudo-homogeneous symbols acting on the Bergman space over the unit ball. We develop the Gelfand theory of these algebras and give some structural information about them. In particular, we provide a description of the radical of these algebras. This paper generalizes and completes the results from previous works related to Toeplitz operators with quasi-radial quasi-homogeneous symbols.
The construction of the free Banach lattice generated by a real Banach space is extended to the complex setting. It is shown that for every complex Banach space $E$ there is a complex Banach lattice $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ containing a linear isometric copy of $E$ and satisfying the following universal property: for every complex Banach lattice $X_{\mathbb C}$, every operator $T:E\rightarrow X_{\mathbb C}$ admits a unique lattice homomorphic extension $\hat{T}:FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]\rightarrow X_{\mathbb C}$ with $\|\hat{T}\|=\|T\|$. The free complex Banach lattice $FBL_{\mathbb C}[E]$ is shown to ha…
The relation $xy-yx=h(y)$, where $h$ is a holomorphic function, occurs naturally in the definitions of some quantum groups. To attach a rigorous meaning to the right-hand side of this equality, we assume that $x$ and $y$ are elements of a Banach algebra (or of an Arens--Michael algebra). We prove that the universal algebra generated by a commutation relation of this kind can be represented explicitly as an analytic Ore extension. An analysis of the structure of the algebra shows that the set of holomorphic functions of $y$ degenerates, but at each zero of $h$, some local algebra of power serie…
An operator $T$ from a Banach lattice $E$ into a Banach space is disjointly non-singular ($DN$-$S$, for short) if no restriction of $T$ to a subspace generated by a disjoint sequence is strictly singular. We obtain several results for $DN$-$S$ operators, including a perturbative characterization. For $E=L_p$ ($1< p<\infty$) we improve the results, and we show that the $DN$-$S$ operators have a different behavior in the cases $p=2$ and $p\neq 2$. As an application we prove that the strongly embedded subspaces of $L_p$ form an open subset in the set of all closed subspaces.
A Banach space $X$ is said to have property ($μ^s$) if every weak$^*$-null sequence in $X^*$ admits a subsequence such that all of its subsequences are Cesàro convergent to $0$ with respect to the Mackey topology. This is stronger than the so-called property (K) of Kwapień. We prove that property $(μ^s)$ holds for every subspace of a Banach space which is strongly generated by an operator with Banach-Saks adjoint (e.g. a strongly super weakly compactly generated space). The stability of property $(μ^s)$ under $\ell^p$-sums is discussed. For a family $\mathcal{A}$ of relatively weakly compact s…
We show that the free Banach lattice $\mathrm{FBL}(A)$ may be constructed as the completion of $\mathrm{FVL}(A)$ with respect to the maximal lattice seminorm $ν$ on $\mathrm{FVL}(A)$ with $ν(a)\le 1$ for all $a\in A$. We present a similar construction for the free Banach lattice $\mathrm{FBL}[E]$ generated by a Banach space $E$.
In this article we deal with the free Banach lattice generated by a lattice and its behavior with respect to subspaces. In general, any lattice embedding $i\colon \mathbb{L} \longrightarrow \mathbb{M}$ between two lattices $\mathbb{L} \subseteq \mathbb{M}$ induces a Banach lattice homomorphism $\hat \imath\colon FBL \langle \mathbb{L} \rangle \longrightarrow FBL \langle \mathbb{M}\rangle$ between the corresponding free Banach lattices. We show that this mapping $\hat \imath$ might not be an isometric embedding neither an isomorphic embedding. In order to provide sufficient conditions for $\hat…
We study the stability of the differential process of Rochberg and Weiss associated to an analytic family of Banach spaces obtained using the complex interpolation method for families. In the context of Köthe function spaces we complete earlier results of Kalton (who showed that there is global bounded stability for pairs of Köthe spaces) by showing that there is global (bounded) stability for families of up to three Köthe spaces distributed in arcs on the unit sphere while there is no (bounded) stability for families of four or more Köthe spaces. In the context or arbitrary pairs of Banach sp…
We study the property of being strongly weakly compactly generated (and some relatives) in projective tensor products of Banach spaces. Our main result is as follows. Let $1<p,q<\infty$ be such that $1/p+1/q\geq 1$. Let $X$ (resp., $Y$) be a Banach space with a countable unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition having a disjoint lower $p$-estimate (resp., $q$-estimate). If $X$ and $Y$ are strongly weakly compactly generated, then so is its projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_πY$.
We show that if the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is bounded on a reflexive Banach function space $X(\mathbb{R})$ and on its associate space $X'(\mathbb{R})$, then the space $X(\mathbb{R})$ has an unconditional wavelet basis. As a consequence of the existence of a Schauder basis in $X(\mathbb{R})$, we prove that the ideal of compact operators $\mathcal{K}(X(\mathbb{R}))$ on the space $X(\mathbb{R})$ is contained in the Banach algebra generated by all operators of multiplication $aI$ by functions $a\in C(\dot{\mathbb{R}})$, where $\dot{\mathbb{R}}=\mathbb{R}\cup\{\infty\}$, and by all Fouri…
A bounded subset $M$ of a Banach space $X$ is said to be $\varepsilon$-weakly precompact, for a given $\varepsilon\geq 0$, if every sequence $(x_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ in $M$ admits a subsequence $(x_{n_k})_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ such that $$ \limsup_{k\to \infty}x^*(x_{n_k})-\liminf_{k\to\infty}x^*(x_{n_k}) \leq \varepsilon $$ for all $x^*\in B_{X^*}$. In this paper we discuss several aspects of $\varepsilon$-weakly precompact sets. On the one hand, we give quantitative versions of the following known results: (a) the absolutely convex hull of a weakly precompact set is weakly precompact (Stegall)…
We study Hilbert generated versions of nonseparable Banach spaces $\mathcal X$ considered by Shelah, Steprāns and Wark where the behavior of the norm on nonseparable subsets is so irregular that it does not allow any linear bounded operator on $\mathcal X$ other than a diagonal operator (or a scalar multiple of the identity) plus a separable range operator. We address the questions if these spaces admit uncountable equilateral sets and if their unit spheres admit uncountable $(1+)$-separated or $(1+\varepsilon)$-separated sets. We resolve some of the above questions for two types of these spac…
Let $Φ$ be a $C^*$-subalgebra of $L^\infty(\mathbb{R})$ and $SO_{X(\mathbb{R})}^\diamond$ be the Banach algebra of slowly oscillating Fourier multipliers on a Banach function space $X(\mathbb{R})$. We show that the intersection of the Calkin image of the algebra generated by the operators of multiplication $aI$ by functions $a\inΦ$ and the Calkin image of the algebra generated by the Fourier convolution operators $W^0(b)$ with symbols in $SO_{X(\mathbb{R})}^\diamond$ coincides with the Calkin image of the algebra generated by the operators of multiplication by constants.
We prove the existence of a separable approximately ultra-homogeneous Banach lattice $\mathfrak{BL}$ that is isometrically universal for separable Banach lattices. This is done by showing that the class of Banach lattices has the Amalgamation Property, and thus finitely generated Banach lattices form a metric Fraïssé class. Some additional results about the structural properties of $\mathfrak{ BL}$ are also proven.
We provide a complete description of those Banach algebras that are generated by an invertible isometry of an $L^p$-space together with its inverse. Examples include the algebra $PF_p(\mathbb{Z})$ of $p$-pseudofunctions on $\mathbb{Z}$, the commutative $C^*$-algebra $C(S^1)$ and all of its quotients, as well as uncountably many `exotic' Banach algebras. We associate to each isometry of an $L^p$-space, a spectral invariant called `spectral configuration', which contains considerably more information than its spectrum as an operator. It is shown that the spectral configuration describes the isom…
We analyze a definition of product of Banach spaces that is naturally associated by duality with an abstract notion of space of multiplication operators. This dual relation allows to understand several constructions coming from different fields of the functional analysis, that can be seen as instances of the abstract one when a particular product is considered. Some relevant examples and applications are shown.
We construct an Asplund Banach space $\mathcal{X}$ with a norming Markuševič basis such that $\mathcal{X}$ is not weakly compactly generated. This solves a long-standing open problem from the early nineties, originally due to Gilles Godefroy. En route to the proof, we construct a peculiar example of scattered compact space, that also solves a question due to Wiesław Kubiś and Arkady Leiderman.
