Let $S$ be the semigroup with identity, generated by $x$ and $y$, subject to $y$ being invertible and $yx=xy^2$. We study two Banach algebra completions of the semigroup algebra $\mathbb{C}S$. Both completions are shown to be left-primitive and have separating families of irreducible infinite-dimensional right modules. As an appendix, we offer an alternative proof that $\mathbb{C}S$ is left-primitive but not right-primitive. We show further that, in contrast to the completions, every irreducible right module for $\mathbb{C}S$ is finite dimensional and hence that $\mathbb{C}S$ has a separating family of such modules.
Let $A$ and $B$ be Banach algebras with bounded approximate identities and let $Φ:A\to B$ be a surjective continuous linear map which preserves two-sided zero products (i.e., $Φ(a)Φ(b)=Φ(b)Φ(a)=0$ whenever $ab=ba=0$). We show that $Φ$ is a weighted Jordan homomorphism provided that $A$ is zero product determined and weakly amenable. These conditions are in particular fulfilled when $A$ is the group algebra $L^1(G)$ with $G$ any locally compact group. We also study a more general type of continuous linear maps $Φ:A\to B$ that satisfy $Φ(a)Φ(b)+Φ(b)Φ(a)=0$ whenever $ab=ba=0$. We show in particul…
We introduce two notions of amenability for a Banach algebra $\cal A$. Let $I$ be a closed two-sided ideal in $\cal A$, we say $\cal A$ is $I$-weakly amenable if the first cohomology group of $\cal A$ with coefficients in the dual space $I^*$ is zero; i.e., $H^1({\cal A},I^*)=\{0\}$, and, $\cal A$ is ideally amenable if $\cal A$ is $I$-weakly amenable for every closed two-sided ideal $I$ in $\cal A$. We relate these concepts to weak amenability of Banach algebras. We also show that ideal amenability is different from amenability and weak amenability. We study the $I$-weak amenability of a Bana…
In this paper we study the ideal amenability of Banach algebras. Let $\cal A$ be a Banach algebra and let $I$ be a closed two-sided ideal in $\cal A$, $\cal A$ is $I$-weakly amenable if $H^{1}({\cal A},I^*)=\{0\}$. Further, $\cal A$ is ideally amenable if $\cal A$ is $I$-weakly amenable for every closed two-sided ideal $I$ in $\cal A$. We know that a continuous homomorphic image of an amenable Banach algebra is again amenable. We show that for ideal amenability the homomorphism property for suitable direct summands is true similar to weak amenability and we apply this result for ideal amenabil…
We introduce two notions of amenability for a Banach algebra $\cal A$. Let $n\in \Bbb N$ and let $I$ be a closed two-sided ideal in $\cal A$, $\cal A$ is $n-I-$weakly amenable if the first cohomology group of $\cal A$ with coefficients in the n-th dual space $I^{(n)}$ is zero; i.e., $H^1({\cal A},I^{(n)})=\{0\}$. Further, $\cal A$ is n-ideally amenable if $\cal A$ is $n-I-$weakly amenable for every closed two-sided ideal $I$ in $\cal A$. We find some relationships of $n-I-$ weak amenability and $m-J-$ weak amenability for some different m and n or for different closed ideals $I$ and $J$ of $\c…
We generalize an important class of Banach spaces, namely the $M$-embedded Banach spaces, to the non-commutative setting of operator spaces. The one-sided $M$-embedded operator spaces are the operator spaces which are one-sided $M$-ideals in their second dual. We show that several properties from the classical setting, like the stability under taking subspaces and quotients, unique extension property, Radon Nikod$\acute {\rm{y}}$m Property and many more, are retained in the non-commutative setting. We also discuss the dual setting of one-sided $L$-embedded operator spaces.
Let X be a Banach space. We prove p-independence of the one-sided decoupling inequality for X-valued tangent martingales as introduced by Kwapien and Woyczynski. It is known that a Banach space X satisfies the two-sided decoupling inequality if and only if X is a UMD Banach space. The one-sided decoupling inequality is a weaker property, including e.g. the space L^1. We provide information on the optimal constants for various spaces, and give a upper estimate of order p in general. In the second part of our paper we derive Burkholder-Davis-Gundy type estimates for p-th moments, p in (0,infty),…
Let $\cal A$ be a Banach algebra. Then $\cal A^{**}$ the second dual of $\cal A$ is a Banach algebra with first (second) Arens product. We study the Arens products of $\cal A^{4}(=({\cal A^{**}})^{**}).$ We found some conditions on $\cal A^{**}$ to be a left ideal in $\cal A^{4}.$ We found the biggest two sided ideal $I$ of ${\cal A},$ in which $I$ is a left (right) ideal of ${\cal A}^{**}$.
As a follow-up to a paper of D. Petz and J. Zemánek [4], a number of equivalent conditions which characterize the trace among linear functionals on matrix algebras, finite rank operators and the socle elements of semisimple Banach algebras in general are given. Moreover, the converse problem is also addressed, that is, given the equivalence of certain conditions which characterize the trace, what can be said about the structure of the socle? In particular, we characterize those socles isomorphic to matrix algebras in this manner, as well as those socles which are minimal two-sided ideals.
Let $A$ be a complex semisimple Banach algebra with identity, and denote by $σ'(x)$ and $ρ(x)$ the nonzero spectrum and spectral radius of an element $x \in A$, respectively. We explore the relationship between elements $a, b \in A$ that satisfy one of the following conditions: (1) $σ' (ax) \subseteq σ' (bx)$ for all $x \in A$, (2) $ρ(ax) \leq ρ(bx)$ for all $x \in A$. The latter problem was identified by Brešar and Špenko in [7]. In particular, we use these conditions to spectrally characterize prime Banach algebras amongst the class of Banach algebras with nonzero socles, as well as to obtai…
In this paper, we characterize the (left) multiplier algebra of a semidirect product algebra ${\mathcal A}={\mathcal B}\oplus {\mathcal I}$, where ${\mathcal I}$ and ${\mathcal B}$ are closed two-sided ideal and closed subalgebra of ${\mathcal A}$, respectively. As an application of this result we investigate the BSE-property of this class of Banach algebras. We then for two commutative semisimple Banach algebras ${\mathcal A}$ and ${\mathcal B}$ characterize the BSE-functions on the carrier space of ${\mathcal A}\times_ϕ{\mathcal B}$, the $ϕ$-Lau product of ${\mathcal A}$ and ${\mathcal B}$, …
Let $X$ be a separable Banach space, $Y$ a Banach space and $f: X \to Y$ an arbitrary mapping. Then the following implication holds at each point $x \in X$ except a $σ$-directionally porous set: If the one-sided Hadamard directional derivative $f'_{H+}(x,u)$ exists in all directions $u$ from a set $S_x \subset X$ whose linear span is dense in $X$, then $f$ is Hadamard differentiable at $x$. This theorem improves and generalizes a recent result of A.D. Ioffe, in which the linear span of $S_x$ equals $X$ and $Y = \R$. An analogous theorem, in which $f$ is pointwise Lipschitz, and which deals wit…
Let $A$ be a right linear operator on a two-sided quaternionic Banach space $X$. The paper studies the Drazin inverse for right linear operators on a quaternionic Banach space. It is shown that if $A$ is Drazin invertible then the Drazin inverse of $A$ is given by $f(A)$ where $f$ is $0$ in an axially symmetric neighborhood of $0$ and $f(q) = q^{-1}$ in an axially symmetric neighborhood of the nonzero spherical spectrum of $A$. Some results analogous to the ones concerning the Drazin inverse of operators on complex Banach spaces are proved in the quaternionic context.
As a follow-up to work done in [7], some new insights to the structure of the socle of a semisimple Banach algebra is obtained. In particular, it is shown that the socle is isomorphic as an algebra to the direct sum of tensor products of corresponding left and right minimal ideals. Remarkably, the finite-dimensional case here reduces to the classical Wedderburn-Artin Theorem, and this approach does not use any continuous irreducible representations of the algebra in question. Furthermore, the structure of the socles for which the classical Shoda's Theorem for matrices can be extended, is chara…
The theory of M-ideals and multiplier mappings of Banach spaces naturally generalizes to left (or right) M-ideals and multiplier mappings of operator spaces. These subspaces and mappings are intrinsically characterized in terms of the matrix norms. In turn this is used to prove that the algebra of left adjointable mappings of a dual operator space X is a von Neumann algebra. If in addition X is an operator A--B-bimodule for $C^{*}$-algebras A and B, then the module operations on X are automatically weak$^{*}$ continuous. One sided L-projections are introduced, and analogues of various results …
In this paper we introduce the notion of slice regular right linear semigroup in a quaternionic Banach space. It is an operatorial function which is slice regular (a noncommutative counterpart of analyticity) and which satisfies a noncommutative semigroup law characterizing the exponential function in an infinite dimensional noncommutative setting. We prove that a right linear operator semigroup in a quaternionic Banach space is slice regular if and only if its generator is spherical sectorial. This result provides a connection between the slice regularity and the noncommutative semigroups the…
Suppose $\Cal J$ is a two-sided quasi-Banach ideal of compact operators on a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $\Cal H$. We show that an operator $T\in\Cal J$ can be expressed as finite linear combination of commutators $[A,B]$ where $A\in\Cal J$ and $B\in\Cal B(\Cal H)$ if and only its eigenvalues $(λ_n)$ (arranged in decreasing order of absolute value, repeated according to algebraic multiplicity and augmented by zeros if necessary) satisfy the condition that the diagonal operator $\diag\{\frac1n(λ_1+\cdots +λ_n)\}$ is a member of $\Cal J.$ This answers (for quasi-Banach ideals) a…
We investigate the higher-dimensional amenability of tensor products $\A \ptp \B$ of Banach algebras $\A$ and $\B$. We prove that the weak bidimension $db_w$ of the tensor product $\A \ptp \B$ of Banach algebras $\A$ and $\B$ with bounded approximate identities satisfies \[ db_w \A \ptp \B = db_w \A + db_w \B. \] We show that it cannot be extended to arbitrary Banach algebras. For example, for a biflat Banach algebra $\A$ which has a left or right, but not two-sided, bounded approximate identity, we have $db_w \A \ptp \A \le 1$ and $db_w \A + db_w \A =2.$ We describe explicitly the continuous …
A left ideal of any $C^*$-algebra is an example of an operator algebra with a right contractive approximate identity (r.c.a.i.). Indeed left ideals in $C^*$-algebras may be characterized as the class of such operator algebras, which happen also to be triple systems. Conversely, we show here and in a sequel to this paper, that operator algebras with r.c.a.i. should be studied in terms of a certain left ideal of a $C^*$-algebra. We study left ideals from the perspective of `Hamana theory' and using the multiplier algebras introduced by the author. More generally, we develop some general theory f…
In [BEZ] the notion of a complete one-sided M-ideal for an operator space X was introduced as a generalization of Alfsen and Effros' notion of an M-ideal for a Banach space [AE72]. In particular, various equivalent formulations of complete one-sided M-projections were given. In this paper, some sharper equivalent formulations are given in the special situation that $X = \mathcal{A}$, a $C^*$-algebra (in which case the complete left M-projections are simply left multiplication on $\mathcal{A}$ by a fixed orthogonal projection in $\mathcal{A}$ or its multiplier algebra). The proof of the first e…
Let B be a unital Banach algebra. A projection in B which is equivalent to the identitity may give rise to a matrix-like structure on any two-sided ideal A in B. In this set-up we prove a theorem to the effect that the bounded Hochschild cohomology H^n(A,A^*) vanishes for all n>=1. The hypothesis of this theorem involve (i) strong H-unitality of A, (ii) a growth condition on diagonal matrices in A, (iii) an extension of A in B with trivial bounded simplicial homology. As a corollary we show that if X is an infinite dimensional Banach space with the bounded approximation property, L_1(μ,Ω) is a…
We address the following two questions regarding the maximal left ideals of the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(E)$ of bounded operators acting on an infinite-dimensional Banach pace $E$: (Q1) Does $\mathscr{B}(E)$ always contain a maximal left ideal which is not finitely generated? (Q2) Is every finitely-generated, maximal left ideal of $\mathscr{B}(E)$ necessarily of the form \{T\in\mathscr{B}(E): Tx = 0\} (*) for some non-zero $x\in E$? Since the two-sided ideal $\mathscr{F}(E)$ of finite-rank operators is not contained in any of the maximal left ideals given by (*), a positive answer to the se…
We develop a generalized Littlewood-Paley theory for semigroups acting on $L^p$-spaces of functions with values in uniformly convex or smooth Banach spaces. We characterize, in the vector-valued setting, the validity of the one-sided inequalities concerning the generalized Littlewood-Paley-Stein $g$-function associated with a subordinated Poisson symmetric diffusion semigroup by the martingale cotype and type properties of the underlying Banach space. We show that in the case of the usual Poisson semigroup and the Poisson semigroup subordinated to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup on ${\mathbb …
In earlier work a crossed product of a Banach algebra was constructed from a Banach algebra dynamical system $(A,G,α)$ and a class $\mathcal{R}$ of continuous covariant representations, and its representations were determined. In this paper the theory is developed further. We consider the dependence of the crossed product on the class $\mathcal{R}$ and its essential uniqueness. Next we study generalized Beurling algebras: weighted Bochner spaces of $A$-valued functions on $G$ with a continuous multiplication. Though not Banach algebras in general, they are isomorphic to a crossed product of a …

We construct a Banach space $Z$ such that the lattice of closed two-sided ideals of the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(Z)$ of bounded operators on $Z$ is as follows: $$ \{0\}\subset \mathscr{K}(Z)\subset\mathscr{E}(Z) \raisebox{-.5ex}% {\ensuremath{\overset{\begin{turn}{30}$\subset$\end{turn}}% {\begin{turn}{-30}$\subset$\end{turn}}}}\!\!% \begin{array}{c}\mathscr{M}_1\\[1mm]\mathscr{M}_2\end{array}\!\!\!% \raisebox{-1.25ex}% {\ensuremath{\overset{\raisebox{1.25ex}{\ensuremath{\begin{turn}{-30}$\subset$\end{turn}}}}% {\raisebox{-.25ex}{\ensuremath{\begin{turn}{30}$\subset$\end{turn}}}}}}\,\mathsc…
J. L. Rubio de Francia proved the one-sided Littlewood--Paley inequality for arbitrary intervals in $L^p$, $2\le p<\infty$ and later N. N. Osipov proved the similar inequality for Walsh functions. In this paper we investigate some properties of Banach spaces $X$ such that the latter inequality holds for $X$-valued functions.
Two themes drive this article: identifying the structure necessary to formulate quaternionic operator theory and revealing the relation between complex and quaternionic operator theory. The theory of quaternionic right linear operators is usually formulated assuming the existenc of both a right- and a left-multiplication on the Banach space $V$, as the space of bounded operators on $V$ is otherwise not a quaternionic linear space. A right linear operator is however only associated with the right-multiplication and in certain settings, e.g. on Hilbert spaces, the left-multiplication is not defi…
We define Schatten classes of adjointable operators on Hilbert modules over abelian $C^*$-algebras. Many key features carry over from the Hilbert space case. In particular, the Schatten classes form two-sided ideals of compact operators and are equipped with a Banach norm and a $C^*$-valued trace with the expected properties. For trivial Hilbert bundles, we show that our Schatten-class operators can be identified bijectively with Schatten-norm-continuous maps from the base space into the Schatten classes on the Hilbert space fiber, with the fiberwise trace. As applications, we introduce the $C…
The paper makes the first steps into the study of extensions ("twisted sums") of noncommutative $L^p$-spaces regarded as Banach modules over the underlying von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$. Our approach combines Kalton's description of extensions by centralizers (these are certain maps which are, in general, neither linear nor bounded) with a general principle, due to Rochberg and Weiss saying that whenever one finds a given Banach space $Y$ as an intermediate space in a (complex) interpolation scale, one automatically gets a self-extension $ 0\longrightarrow Y\longrightarrow X\longrightarrow …
