We study delta-points in Banach spaces $h_{\mathcal{A},p}$ generated by adequate families $\mathcal A$ where $1 \le p < \infty$. In the case the familiy $\mathcal A$ is regular and $p=1,$ these spaces are known as combinatorial Banach spaces. When $p > 1$ we prove that neither $h_{\mathcal{A},p}$ nor its dual contain delta-points. Under the extra assumption that $\mathcal A$ is regular, we prove that the same is true when $p=1.$ In particular the Schreier spaces and their duals fail to have delta-points. If $\mathcal A$ consists of finite sets only we are able to rule out the existence of delta-points in $h_{\mathcal{A},1}$ and Daugavet-points in its dual.
We also show that if $h_{\mathcal{A},1}$ is polyhedral, then it is either (I)-polyhedral or (V)-polyhedral (in the sense of Fonf and Veselý).
We study the existence of Daugavet- and delta-points in the unit sphere of Banach spaces with a $1$-unconditional basis. A norm one element $x$ in a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point) if every element in the unit ball (resp. $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. A Banach space has the Daugavet property (resp. diametral local diameter two property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point). It is well-known that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not have an uncon…
A continuous quadratic form ("quadratic form", in short) on a Banach space $X$ is: (a) delta-semidefinite (i.e., representable as a difference of two nonnegative quadratic forms) if and only if the corresponding symmetric linear operator $T\colon X\to X^*$ factors through a Hilbert space; (b) delta-convex (i.e., representable as a difference of two continuous convex functions) if and only if $T$ is a UMD-operator. It follows, for instance, that each quadratic form on an infinite-dimensional $L_p(μ)$ space ($1\le p \le\infty$) is: (a) delta-semidefinite iff $p \ge 2$; (b) delta-convex iff $p>1$…
A Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point) of a Banach space is a norm one element $x$ for which every point in the unit ball (resp.~element $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance 2 from $x$. A Banach space has the well-known Daugavet property (resp.~diametral local diameter 2 property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point). This paper complements the article "Delta- and Daugavet-points in Banach spaces" by T. A. Abrahamsen, R. Haller, V. Lima, and K. Pirk, where the study of the existence of Daugavet- and $Δ$-po…
Given a closed set $C$ in a Banach space $(X, \|\cdot\|)$, a point $x\in X$ is said to have a nearest point in $C$ if there exists $z\in C$ such that $d_C(x) =\|x-z\|$, where $d_C$ is the distance of $x$ from $C$. We shortly survey the problem of studying how large is the set of points in $X$ which have nearest points in $C$. We then discuss the topic of delta-convex functions and how it is related to finding nearest points.
We study solutions and approximate solutions of the multiplicative Sincov equation $$T(f, h) = T(f, g)T(g, h)$$ for mapping $T$ taking values in a commutative Banach algebra.
A $Δ$-point $x$ of a Banach space is a norm one element that is arbitrarily close to convex combinations of elements in the unit ball that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. If, in addition, every point in the unit ball is arbitrarily close to such convex combinations, $x$ is a Daugavet-point. A Banach space $X$ has the Daugavet property if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point. We show that $Δ$- and Daugavet-points are the same in $L_1$-spaces, $L_1$-preduals, as well as in a big class of Müntz spaces. We also provide an example of a Banach space where all points on the uni…
A norm one element $x$ of a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (respectively, a $Δ$-point) if every slice of the unit ball (respectively, every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) contains an element, which is almost at distance 2 from $x$. We characterize Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in Lipschitz-free spaces. Furthermore, we construct a Lipschitz-free space with the Radon--Nikodým property and a Daugavet-point; this is the first known example of such a Banach space.
In terms of fragmentability, we describe a new class of Banach spaces which do not contain weak-G_delta open bounded subsets. In particular, none of these spaces is isomorphic to a separable polyhedral space.
We study Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in Banach spaces. A norm one element $x$ is a Daugavet-point (respectively a $Δ$-point) if in every slice of the unit ball (respectively in every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) you can find another element of distance as close to $2$ from $x$ as desired. In this paper we look for criteria and properties ensuring that a norm one element is not a Daugavet- or $Δ$-point. We show that asymptotically uniformly smooth spaces and reflexive asymptotically uniformly convex spaces do not contain $Δ$-points. We also show that the same conclusion holds true for th…
We study when the integration maps of vector measures can be computed as pointwise limits of their finite rank Radon-Nikodým derivatives. We will show that this can sometimes be done, but there are also principal cases in which this cannot be done. The positive cases are obtained using the circle of ideas of the approximation property for Banach spaces. The negative ones are given by means of an adequate use of the Daugavet property. As an application, we analyse when the norm in a space of integrable functions $L^1(m)$ can be computed as a limit of the norms of the spaces of integrable functi…
We study dentable maps from a closed convex subset of a Banach space into a metric space as an attempt of generalize the Radon-Nikodým property to a "less linear" frame. We note that a certain part of the theory can be developed in rather great generality. Indeed, we establish that the elements of the dual which are "strongly slicing" for a given uniformly continuous dentable function form a dense $\mathcal{G}_δ$ subset of the dual. As a consequence, the space of uniformly continuous dentable maps from a closed convex bounded set to a Banach space is a Banach space. However some interesting ap…
A norm one element $x$ of a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (respectively,~a $Δ$-point) if every slice of the unit ball (respectively,~every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) contains an element that is almost at distance 2 from $x$. We prove the equivalence of Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in spaces of Lipschitz functions over proper metric spaces and provide two characterizations for them. Furthermore, we show that in some spaces of Lipschitz functions, there exist $Δ$-points that are not Daugavet-points. Lastly, we prove that every space of Lipschitz functions over an infinite metric space…
What is an adequate extension of an operator ideal I to the polynomial and multilinear settings? This question motivated the appearance of the concepts of coherent sequences of polynomial ideals and compatibility of a polynomial ideal with an operator ideal, introduced by D. Carando el al. We propose a different approach by considering pairs (U_{k},M_{k})_{k=1}^{\infty}, where (U_{k})_{k=1}^{\infty} is a polynomial ideal and (M_{k})_{k=1}^{\infty} is a multi-ideal, instead of considering just polynomial ideals. Our approach ends a discomfort caused by the previous theory: for real scalars the …
The (delta-) normal cone to an arbitrary intersection of sublevel sets of proper, lower semicontinuous, and convex functions is characterized, using either epsilon-subdifferentials at the nominal point or exact subdifferentials at nearby points. Our tools include (epsilon-) calculus rules for sup/max functions. The framework of this work is that of a locally convex space, however, formulas using exact subdifferentials require some restriction either on the space (e.g. Banach), or on the function (e.g. epi-pointed).
We introduce a new diametral notion for points of the unit sphere of Banach spaces, that naturally complements the notion of Delta-points, but is weaker than the notion of Daugavet points. We prove that this notion can be used to provide a new geometric characterization of the Daugavet property, as well as to recover -- and even to provide new -- results about Daugavet points in various contexts such as absolute sums of Banach spaces or projective tensor products. Finally, we show that this notion leads to powerful new ideas for renorming questions, and that those ideas can be combined with pr…
For various function spaces of the form gU or U+gV, U and V e.g. almost periodic functions AP, (bounded) uniformly continuous functions BUC, UC, g(t) = exp(it^2), their properties are discussed, especially a Loomis type condition (Delta) which has been essential in getting such properties : A satisfies (Delta) if for any loclly integrable f : J -> X with all differences f(.+h) - f(.) in A for all positive h implies f(.) - (1/h) integral from 0 to h f(.+s)ds in A (J = [0,infty) or R, X any Banach space).
We present an example in ZFC of a locally compact, scattered Hausdorff non-Gruenhage space $D$ having a $\G_delta$-diagonal. This answers a question posed by Orihuela, Troyanski and the author in a study of strictly convex norms on Banach spaces. In addition, we show that the Banach space of continuous functions $C_0(D)$ admits a $C^\infty$-smooth bump function.
About twenty years ago Johnson and Zippin showed that every separable L_1(mu)-predual was isometric to a quotient of C(Delta ), where Delta is the Cantor set. In this note we will show that the natural analogue of the theorem for l_1-preduals does not hold. We will show that there are many l_1-preduals which are not isometric to a quotient of any C(K)-space with K a countable compact metric space. We also prove some general results about the relationship between l_1-preduals and quotients of C(K)-spaces with K a countable compact metric space. The results in this paper were presented at the Wo…
By iterative techniques,we present two fixed point theorems, whose modular formulations are relatively close to the Banach's fixed point theorem in the normed spaces. The first result concerns the fixed point of the strongly contraction mappings. The second result deals with the fixed point of the strict contraction mappings where the modular satisfies the delta-condition. For the nonexpansive mappings, where the modular satisfies the regular growth condition,we present a fixed point theorem of the Shauder's type, without boundedness condition on the domain of theses mappings.
Let L_U = -Delta+U be a Schrödinger operator on R^d, where U\in L^1_{loc}(R^d) is a non-negative potential and d\geq 3. The Hardy space H^1(L_U) is defined in terms of the maximal function for the semigroup K_{t,U} = exp(-t L_U), namely H^1(L_U) = {f\in L^1(R^d): \|f\|_{H^1(L_U)}:= \|sup_{t>0} |K_{t,U} f| \|_{L^1(R^d)} < \infty. Assume that U=V+W, where V\geq 0 satisfies the global Kato condition sup_{x\in R^d} \int_{R^d} V(y)|x-y|^{2-d} < \infty. We prove that, under certain assumptions on W\geq 0, the space H^1(L_U) admits an atomic decomposition of local type. An atom a for H^1(L_U) is eith…
