A norm one element $x$ of a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (respectively,~a $Δ$-point) if every slice of the unit ball (respectively,~every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) contains an element that is almost at distance 2 from $x$. We prove the equivalence of Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in spaces of Lipschitz functions over proper metric spaces and provide two characterizations for them. Furthermore, we show that in some spaces of Lipschitz functions, there exist $Δ$-points that are not Daugavet-points. Lastly, we prove that every space of Lipschitz functions over an infinite metric space contains a $Δ$-point but might not contain any Daugavet-points.
We introduce a substitute for the concept of slice for the case of non-linear Lipschitz functionals and transfer to the non-linear case some results about the Daugavet and the alternative Daugavet equations previously known only for linear operators.
A norm one element $x$ of a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (respectively, a $Δ$-point) if every slice of the unit ball (respectively, every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) contains an element, which is almost at distance 2 from $x$. We characterize Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in Lipschitz-free spaces. Furthermore, we construct a Lipschitz-free space with the Radon--Nikodým property and a Daugavet-point; this is the first known example of such a Banach space.
We study the Daugavet property in the space of Lipschitz functions $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ for a complete metric space $M$. Namely we show that $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ has the Daugavet property if and only if $M$ is a length space. This condition also characterises the Daugavet property in the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(M)$. Moreover, when $M$ is compact, we show that either $\mathcal{F}(M)$ has the Daugavet property or its unit ball has a strongly exposed point. If $M$ is an infinite compact subset of a strictly convex Banach space then the Daugavet property of $\operatorname{Lip}_…
We study the existence of Daugavet- and delta-points in the unit sphere of Banach spaces with a $1$-unconditional basis. A norm one element $x$ in a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point) if every element in the unit ball (resp. $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. A Banach space has the Daugavet property (resp. diametral local diameter two property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point). It is well-known that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not have an uncon…
A Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point) of a Banach space is a norm one element $x$ for which every point in the unit ball (resp.~element $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance 2 from $x$. A Banach space has the well-known Daugavet property (resp.~diametral local diameter 2 property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point). This paper complements the article "Delta- and Daugavet-points in Banach spaces" by T. A. Abrahamsen, R. Haller, V. Lima, and K. Pirk, where the study of the existence of Daugavet- and $Δ$-po…
For a compact metric space $K$ the space $\Lip(K)$ has the Daugavet property if and only if the norm of every $f \in \Lip(K)$ is attained locally. If $K$ is a subset of an $L_p$-space, $1<p<\infty$, this is equivalent to the convexity of $K$.
We study Daugavet points and $Δ$-points in Lipschitz-free Banach spaces. We prove that, if $M$ is a compact metric space, then $μ\in S_{\mathcal F(M)}$ is a Daugavet point if, and only if, there is no denting point of $B_{\mathcal F(M)}$ at distance strictly smaller than two from $μ$. Moreover, we prove that if $x$ and $y$ are connectable by rectifiable curves of lenght as close to $d(x,y)$ as we wish, then the molecule $m_{x,y}$ is a $Δ$-point. Some conditions on $M$ which guarantee that the previous implication reverses are also obtained. As a consequence of our work, we show that Lipschitz-…
We prove that if a metric space $M$ has the finite CEP then $\mathcal F(M)\widehat{\otimes}_π X$ has the Daugavet property for every non-zero Banach space $X$. This applies, for instance, if $M$ is a Banach space whose dual is isometrically an $L_1(μ)$ space. If $M$ has the CEP then $L(\mathcal F(M),X)=\Lip(M,X)$ has the Daugavet property for every non-zero Banach space $X$, showing that this is the case when $M$ is an injective Banach space or a convex subset of a Hilbert space.
A $Δ$-point $x$ of a Banach space is a norm one element that is arbitrarily close to convex combinations of elements in the unit ball that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. If, in addition, every point in the unit ball is arbitrarily close to such convex combinations, $x$ is a Daugavet-point. A Banach space $X$ has the Daugavet property if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point. We show that $Δ$- and Daugavet-points are the same in $L_1$-spaces, $L_1$-preduals, as well as in a big class of Müntz spaces. We also provide an example of a Banach space where all points on the uni…
We study Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in Banach spaces. A norm one element $x$ is a Daugavet-point (respectively a $Δ$-point) if in every slice of the unit ball (respectively in every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) you can find another element of distance as close to $2$ from $x$ as desired. In this paper we look for criteria and properties ensuring that a norm one element is not a Daugavet- or $Δ$-point. We show that asymptotically uniformly smooth spaces and reflexive asymptotically uniformly convex spaces do not contain $Δ$-points. We also show that the same conclusion holds true for th…
We introduce a new diametral notion for points of the unit sphere of Banach spaces, that naturally complements the notion of Delta-points, but is weaker than the notion of Daugavet points. We prove that this notion can be used to provide a new geometric characterization of the Daugavet property, as well as to recover -- and even to provide new -- results about Daugavet points in various contexts such as absolute sums of Banach spaces or projective tensor products. Finally, we show that this notion leads to powerful new ideas for renorming questions, and that those ideas can be combined with pr…
We show that all the symmetric projective tensor products of a Banach space $X$ have the Daugavet property provided $X$ has the Daugavet property and either $X$ is an $L_1$-predual (i.e.\ $X^*$ is isometric to an $L_1$-space) or $X$ is a vector-valued $L_1$-space. In the process of proving it, we get a number of results of independent interest. For instance, we characterise "localised" versions of the Daugavet property (i.e.\ Daugavet points and $Δ$-points recently introduced) for $L_1$-preduals in terms of the extreme points of the topological dual, a result which allows to characterise a pol…
We prove that the Lipschitz-free space over a metric space M is locally almost square whenever M is a length space. Consequently, the Lipschitz-free space is locally almost square if and only if it has the Daugavet property. We also show that a Lipschitz-free space is never almost square.
We provide some new consequences on the Lipschitz numerical radius and index which were introduced recently. More precisely, we give some renorming results on the Lipschitz numerical index, introduce a concept of Lipschitz numerical radius attaining functions in order to show that the denseness fails for an arbitrary Banach space, and study a Lipschitz version of Daugavet centers. Furthermore, we discuss the Lipschitz numerical index of vector-valued function spaces, absolute sums of Banach spaces, the Köthe-Bochner spaces, and Banach spaces which contain a dense union of increasing family of …
We solve some open problems regarding diameter two properties within the class of Banach spaces of real-valued Lipschitz functions by using the de Leeuw transform. Namely, we show that: the diameter two property, the strong diameter two property, and the symmetric strong diameter two property are all different for these spaces of Lipschitz functions; the space $\operatorname{Lip}_0(K_n)$ has the symmetric strong diameter two property for every $n\in \mathbb{N}$, including the case of $n=2$; every local norm-one Lipschitz function is a Daugavet point.
The aim of this manuscript is to study \emph{spear operators}: bounded linear operators $G$ between Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ satisfying that for every other bounded linear operator $T:X\longrightarrow Y$ there exists a modulus-one scalar $ω$ such that $$ \|G + ω\,T\|=1+ \|T\|. $$ To this end, we introduce two related properties, one weaker called the alternative Daugavet property (if rank-one operators $T$ satisfy the requirements), and one stronger called lushness, and we develop a complete theory about the relations between these three properties. To do this, the concepts of spear vector an…
We study delta-points in Banach spaces $h_{\mathcal{A},p}$ generated by adequate families $\mathcal A$ where $1 \le p < \infty$. In the case the familiy $\mathcal A$ is regular and $p=1,$ these spaces are known as combinatorial Banach spaces. When $p > 1$ we prove that neither $h_{\mathcal{A},p}$ nor its dual contain delta-points. Under the extra assumption that $\mathcal A$ is regular, we prove that the same is true when $p=1.$ In particular the Schreier spaces and their duals fail to have delta-points. If $\mathcal A$ consists of finite sets only we are able to rule out the existence of delt…
