An operator $T$ from a Banach lattice $E$ into a Banach space is disjointly non-singular ($DN$-$S$, for short) if no restriction of $T$ to a subspace generated by a disjoint sequence is strictly singular. We obtain several results for $DN$-$S$ operators, including a perturbative characterization. For $E=L_p$ ($1< p<\infty$) we improve the results, and we show that the $DN$-$S$ operators have a different behavior in the cases $p=2$ and $p\neq 2$. As an application we prove that the strongly embedded subspaces of $L_p$ form an open subset in the set of all closed subspaces.
This is a survey on disjointly homogeneous Banach lattices and their applicactions. Several structural properties of this class are analyzed. In addition we show how these spaces provide a natural framework for studying the compactness of powers of operators allowing for a unified treatment of well-known results.
We introduce and study some operational quantities which characterize the disjointly non-singular operators from a Banach lattice $E$ to a Banach space $Y$ when $E$ is order continuous, and some other quantities which characterize the disjointly strictly singular operators for arbitrary $E$.
In this article we investigate the disjointly non-singular (DNS) operators. Following [8] we say that an operator $T$ from a Banach lattice $F$ into a Banach space $E$ is DNS, if no restriction of $T$ to a subspace generated by a disjoint sequence is strictly singular. We partially answer a question from [8] by showing that this class of operators forms an open subset of $L\left(F,E\right)$ as soon as $F$ is order continuous. Moreover, we show that in this case $T$ is DNS if and only if the norm topology is the minimal topology which is simultaneously stronger than the unbounded norm topology …
A Banach lattice E is called p-disjointly homogeneous, 1< p< infty, when every sequence of pairwise disjoint normalized elements in E has a subsequence equivalent to the unit vector basis of l_p. Employing methods from interpolation theory, we clarify which rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces on [0,1] are p-disjointly homogeneous. In particular, for every 1<p< infty and any increasing concave function f on [0,1], which is not equivalent neither 1 nor t, there exists a p-disjointly homogeneous r.i. space with the fundamental function f. Moreover, in the class of all interpolation r.i. spaces …
We study ``disjoint" versions of the notions of trivial, locally trivial, strictly singular and super-strictly singular quasi-linear maps in the context of Köthe function spaces. Among other results, we show: i) (locally) trivial and (locally) disjointly trivial notions coincide on reflexive spaces; ii) On non-atomic superreflexive Köthe spaces, no centralizer is singular, although most are disjointly singular. iii) No super singular quasi-linear maps exist between superreflexive spaces although Kalton-Peck centralizers are super disjointly singular; iv) Disjoint singularity does not imply sup…
Let $1\le p<\infty$. A symmetric space $X$ on $[0,1]$ is said to be $p$-disjointly homogeneous (resp. restricted $p$-disjointly homogeneous) if every sequence of normalized pairwise disjoint functions from $X$ (resp. characteristic functions) contains a subsequence equivalent in $X$ to the unit vector basis of $l_p$. Answering a question posed recently, we construct, for each $1\le p<\infty$, a restricted $p$-disjointly homogeneous symmetric space, which is not $p$-disjointly homogeneous. Moreover, we prove that the property of $p$-disjoint homogeneity is preserved under Banach isomorphisms.
Let $1\le p<\infty$. A Banach lattice $E$ is said to be disjointly homogeneous (resp. $p$-disjointly homogeneous) if two arbitrary normalized disjoint sequences from $E$ contain equivalent in $E$ subsequences (resp. every normalized disjoint sequence contains a subsequence equivalent in $E$ to the unit vector basis of $l_p$). Answering a question raised in 2014 by Flores, Hernandez, Spinu, Tradacete, and Troitsky, for each $1<p<\infty$, we construct a reflexive $p$-disjointly homogeneous rearrangement invariant space on $[0,1]$ whose dual is not disjointly homogeneous. Employing methods from i…
The disjointly non-singular ($DNS$) operators $T\in L(E,Y)$ from a Banach lattice $E$ to a Banach space $Y$ are those operators which are strictly singular in no closed subspace generated by a disjoint sequence of non-zero vectors. When $E$ is order continuous with a weak unit, $E$ can be represented as a dense ideal in some $L_1(μ)$ space, and we show that each of $T\in DNS(E,Y)$ admits an extension $\overline{T}\in DNS(L_1(μ),PO)$ from which we derive that both $T$ and $T^{**}$ are tauberian operators and that the operator $T^{co}: E^{**}/E\to Y^{**}/Y$ induced by $T^{**}$ is an (into) isomo…
Let $1\le p\le\infty$. A Banach lattice $X$ is said to be $p$-disjointly homogeneous or $(p-DH)$ (resp. restricted $(p-DH)$) if every normalized disjoint sequence in $X$ (resp. every normalized sequence of characteristic functions of disjoint subsets) contains a subsequence equivalent in $X$ to the unit vector basis of $\ell_p$. We revisit $DH$-properties of Orlicz spaces and refine some previous results of this topic, showing that $(p-DH)$-property is not stable in the class of Orlicz spaces and the classes of restricted $(p-DH)$ and $(p-DH)$ Orlicz spaces are different. Moreover, we give a c…
A condition for the presence of a "gap" between symmetric spaces sufficient for the inclusion of one of these spaces into the other to be disjointly strictly singular is found. This condition is stated in terms of fundamental functions of spaces and is exact in a certain sense. In parallel, necessary and sufficient conditions for an inclusion of Lorentz spaces to be disjointly strictly singular are obtained.
We explore the relation between lattice versions of strict singularity for operators from a Banach lattice to a Banach space. In particular, we study when the class of disjointly strictly singular operators, those not invertible on the span of any disjoint sequence, coincides with that of lattice strictly singular operators, i.e. those not invertible on any (infinite dimensional) sublattice. New results are given which help to clarify the existing relation between these two classes.
We prove that the class of Banach function lattices in which all relatively weakly compact sets are equi-integrable sets (i.e. spaces satisfying the Dunford-Pettis criterion) coincides with the class of 1-disjointly homogeneous Banach lattices. A new examples of such spaces are provided. Furthermore, it is shown that Dunford-Pettis criterion is equivalent to de la Vallee Poussin criterion in all rearrangement invariant spaces on the interval. Finally, the results are applied to characterize weakly compact pointwise multipliers between Banach function lattices.
We study Banach spaces X with a strongly asymptotic l_p basis (any disjointly supported finite set of vectors far enough out with respect to the basis behaves like l_p) which are minimal (X embeds into every infinite dimensional subspace). In particular such spaces embed into l_p.
This paper contains results concerning the Borel reduction of the relation $E_0$ of eventual agreement between sequences of 0's and 1's, to the relation of permutative equivalence between basic sequences in a Banach space. For more clarity in this abstract, we state these results in terms of classification by real numbers. If $R$ is some (analytic) equivalence relation on a Polish space $X$, it is said that $R$ is classifiable (by real numbers) if there exists a Borel map $g$ from $X$ into the real line such that $x R x'$ if and only if $g(x)=g(x')$. If $R$ is not classifiable, there must be $…
Based on the recently introduced uniform $λ-$adjustment for closed subspaces of Banach spaces we extend the concept of the strictly singular and finitely strictly singular operators to the sequences of closed subspaces and operators in Banach spaces and prove theorems about lower semi--Fredholm stability. We also state some new open questions related to strict singularity and the geometry of Banach spaces.
We present condition on higher order asymptotic behaviour of basic sequences in a Banach space ensuring the existence of bounded non-compact strictly singular operator on a subspace. We apply it in asymptotic $\ell_p$ spaces, $1\leq p<\infty$, in particular in convexified mixed Tsirelson spaces and related asymptotic $\ell_p$ HI spaces.
We prove necessary conditions for Fredholmness of singular integral operators with piecewise continuous coefficients on weighted Banach function spaces. These conditions are formulated in terms of indices of submultiplicative functions associated with local properties of the space, of the curve, and of the weight. As an example, we consider weighted Nakano spaces $L^{p(\cdot)}_w$ (weighted Lebesgue spaces with variable exponent). Moreover, our necessary conditions become also sufficient for weighted Nakano spaces over nice curves whenever $w$ is a Khvedelidze weight, and the variable exponent …
Let $X$ and $Y$ be separable Banach spaces and denote by $\sss\sss(X,Y)$ the subset of $\llll(X,Y)$ consisting of all strictly singular operators. We study various ordinal ranks on the set $\sss\sss(X,Y)$. Our main results are summarized as follows. Firstly, we define a new rank $\rs$ on $\sss\sss(X,Y)$. We show that $\rs$ is a co-analytic rank and that dominates the rank $\varrho$ introduced by Androulakis, Dodos, Sirotkin and Troitsky [Israel J. Math., 169 (2009), 221-250]. Secondly, for every $1\leq p<+\infty$ we construct a Banach space $Y_p$ with an unconditional basis such that $\sss\sss…
We show that every subsymmetric Schauder basis $(e_j)$ of a Banach space $X$ has the factorization property, i.e. $I_X$ factors through every bounded operator $T\colon X\to X$ with a $δ$-large diagonal (that is $\inf_j |\langle Te_j, e_j^*\rangle| \geq δ> 0$, where the $(e_j^*)$ are the biorthogonal functionals to $(e_j)$). Even if $X$ is a non-separable dual space with a subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder basis $(e_j)$, we prove that if $(e_j)$ is non-$\ell^1$-splicing (there is no disjointly supported $\ell^1$-sequence in $X$), then $(e_j)$ has the factorization property. The same is true for $\…
The main result: the dual of separable Banach space $X$ contains a total subspace which is not norming over any infinite dimensional subspace of $X$ if and only if $X$ has a nonquasireflexive quotient space with the strictly singular quotient mapping.
We construct a family $(\mathcal{X}_\al)_{\al\le ω_1}$ of reflexive Banach spaces with long transfinite bases but with no unconditional basic sequences. In our spaces $\mathcal{X}_\al$ every bounded operator $T$ is split into its diagonal part $D_T$ and its strictly singular part $S_T$.
A space $X$ is said to be hereditarily indecomposable if no two (infinite dimensional) subspaces of $X$ are in a direct sum. In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a complex hereditarily indecomposable Banach space, then every operator from a subspace $Y$ of $X$ to $X$ is of the form $λI + S$, where $I$ is the inclusion map and $S$ is strictly singular.
We construct an indecomposable reflexive Banach space $X_{ius}$ such that every infinite dimensional closed subspace contains an unconditional basic sequence. We also show that every operator $T\in \mathcal{B}(X_{ius})$ is of the form $λI+S$ with $S$ a strictly singular operator.
V. D. Milman proved in \cite{Milman:70} that the product of two strictly singular operators on $L_p[0,1]$ ($1\le p<\infty$) or on $C[0,1]$ is compact. In this note we utilize Schreier families $§_ξ$ in order to define the class of $§_ξ$-strictly singular operators, and then we refine the technique of Milman to show that certain products of operators from this class are compact, under the assumption that the underlying Banach space has finitely many equivalence classes of Schreier-spreading sequences. Finally we define the class of $§_ξ$-hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces and we examine …
A new method of defining hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces is presented. This method provides a unified approach for constructing reflexive HI spaces and also HI spaces with no reflexive subspace. All the spaces presented here satisfy the property that the composition of any two strictly singular operators is a compact one. This yields the first known example of a Banach space with no reflexive subspace such that every operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace.
Properties of Lipschitz and d.c. surfaces of finite codimension in a Banach space, and properties of generated $σ$-ideals are studied. These $σ$-ideals naturally appear in the differentiation theory and in the abstract approximation theory. Using these properties, we improve an unpublished result of M. Heisler which gives an alternative proof of a result of D. Preiss on singular points of convex functions.
We show that the perturbation class for the upper semi-Fredholm operators between two Banach spaces X and Y coincides with the strictly singular operators when X is subprojective and that the perturbation class for the lower semi-Fredholm operators coincides with the strictly cosingular operators when Y is superprojective. Similar results were previously obtained under stronger conditions for X and Y.
We answer the question of W.T. Gowers, giving an example of a bounded operator on a subspace of Gowers unconditional space which is not a strictly singular perturbation of a restriction of a diagonal operator. We make some observations on operators in arbitrary tight by support Banach space, showing in particular that in such space no two isomorphic infinitely dimensional subspaces form a direct sum.
It is proved that, for each pair (m,n) of non-negative integers, there is a Banach space X for which the group K_0(B(X)) is isomorphic to m copies of the integers and the group K_1(B(X)) is isomorphic to n copies of the integers. Along the way we compute the K-groups of all closed ideals of operators contained in the ideal of strictly singular operators, and we derive some results about the existence of splittings of certain short exact sequences.
Exploiting several $\ell_p$-factorization results for strictly singular operators, we study the strict singularity of the multiplication operator $L_A R_B\colon T\mapsto ATB$ on $\mathcal L(X)$ for various Banach spaces~$X$.
We show that there exists a Banach space $E$ with the following properties: the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(E)$ of bounded, linear operators on $E$ has a singular extension which splits algebraically, but it does not split strongly, and the homological bidimension of $\mathscr{B}(E)$ is at least two. The first of these conclusions solves a natural problem left open by Bade, Dales, and Lykova (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 1999), while the second answers a question of Helemskii. The Banach space $E$ that we use was originally introduced by Read (J. London Math. Soc. 1989).
We prove that if the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is bounded on a separable Banach function space $X(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and on its associate space $X'(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and a maximally modulated Calderón-Zygmund singular integral operator $T^Φ$ is of weak type $(r,r)$ for all $r\in(1,\infty)$, then $T^Φ$ extends to a bounded operator on $X(\mathbb{R}^n)$. This theorem implies the boundedness of the maximally modulated Hilbert transform on variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R})$ under natural assumptions on the variable exponent $p:\mathbb{R}\to(1,\infty)$. Applications of the above r…
The class of strictly singular operators originating from the dual of a separable Banach space is written as an increasing union of $ω_1$ subclasses which are defined using the Schreier sets. A question of J. Diestel, of whether a similar result can be stated for strictly cosingular operators, is studied.
We construct a Hereditarily Indecomposable Banach space $\eqs_d$ with a Schauder basis \seq{e}{n} on which there exist strictly singular non-compact diagonal operators. Moreover, the space $\mc{L}_{\diag}(\eqs_d)$ of diagonal operators with respect to the basis \seq{e}{n} contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_{\infty}(\N)$.
There exists a real hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $X$ such that the quotient space $L(X)/S(X)$ by strictly singular operators is isomorphic to the complex field (resp. to the quaternionic division algebra). Up to isomorphism, the example with complex quotient space has exactly two complex structures, which are conjugate, totally incomparable, and both hereditarily indecomposable. So there exist two Banach spaces which are isometric as real spaces but totally incomparable as complex spaces. This extends results of J. Bourgain and S. Szarek from 1986. The quaternionic example, on the …
Let CBV denote the Banach algebra of all continuous real-valued functions of bounded variation, defined in [0,1]. We show that the set of strongly singular functions in CBV is nonseparably spaceable. We also prove that certain families of singular functions constitute strongly c-algebrable sets. The argument is based on a new general criterion of strong c-algebrability.
We prove that the class of trilinear multiplier forms with singularity over a one dimensional subspace, including the bilinear Hilbert transform, admit bounded $L^p$-extension to triples of intermediate $\mathrm{UMD}$ spaces. No other assumption, for instance of Rademacher maximal function type, is made on the triple of $\mathrm{UMD}$ spaces. Among the novelties in our analysis is an extension of the phase-space projection technique to the $\mathrm{UMD}$-valued setting. This is then employed to obtain appropriate single tree estimates by appealing to the $\mathrm{UMD}$-valued bound for bilinea…
Let $E$ be the Banach space constructed by Read (J. London Math. Soc. 1989) such that the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on $E$ admits a discontinuous derivation. We show that $\mathscr{B}(E)$ has a singular, admissible extension which splits algebraically, but does not split strongly. This answers a natural question going back to the work of Bade, Dales, and Lykova (Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 1999), and complements recent results of Laustsen and Skillicorn (C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris, to appear).
Let (X,d,μ) be a space of homogeneous type and E a UMD Banach space. Under the assumption mu({x})=0 for all x in X, we prove a representation theorem for singular integral operators on (X,d,mu) as a series of simple shifts and rearrangements plus two paraproducts. This gives a T(1) Theorem in this setting.
Using the notion of $S_ξ$-strictly singular operator introduced by Androulakis, Dodos, Sirotkin and Troitsky, we define an ordinal index on the subspace of strictly singular operators between two separable Banach spaces. In our main result, we provide a sufficient condition implying that this index is bounded by $ω_1$. In particular, we apply this result to study operators on totally incomparable spaces, hereditarily indecomposable spaces and spaces with few operators.
We prove that if T is a strictly singular 1-1 operator defined on an infinite dimensional Banach space X, then for every infinite dimensional subspace Y of X there exists an infinite dimensional subspace Z of Y such that Z contains orbits of T of every finite length and the restriction of T on Z is a compact operator.
In this paper we study two types of collections of operators on a Banach space on the subject of forming operator ideals. One of the types allows us to construct an uncountable chain of closed ideals in each of the operator algebras $\mathcal{L}(\ell_1\oplus\ell_q)$, $1<q<\infty$, and $\mathcal{L}(\ell_1\oplus c_0)$. This finishes answering a longstanding question of Pietsch.
The modern study of singular integral operators on curves in the plane began in the 1970's. Since then, there has been a vast array of work done on the boundedness of singular integral operators defined on lower dimensional sets in Euclidean spaces. In recent years, mathematicians have attempted to push these results into a more general metric setting particularly in the case of singular integral operators defined on curves and graphs in Carnot groups. Suppose $X = Y^*$ for a separable Banach space $Y$. Any separable metric space can be isometrically embedded in such a Banach space via the Kur…
