This paper contains results concerning the Borel reduction of the relation $E_0$ of eventual agreement between sequences of 0's and 1's, to the relation of permutative equivalence between basic sequences in a Banach space. For more clarity in this abstract, we state these results in terms of classification by real numbers.
If $R$ is some (analytic) equivalence relation on a Polish space $X$, it is said that $R$ is classifiable (by real numbers) if there exists a Borel map $g$ from $X$ into the real line such that $x R x'$ if and only if $g(x)=g(x')$. If $R$ is not classifiable, there must be $2^ω$ $R$-classes. It is conjectured that any separable Banach space such that isomorphism between its subspaces is classifiable must be isomorphic to $l_2$.
We prove the following results:
- the relation $\sim^{perm}$ of permutative equivalence between normalized basic sequences is analytic non Borel,
- if $X$ is a Banach space with a Schauder basis $(e_n)$, such that $\sim^{perm}$ between normalized block-sequences of $X$ is classifiable, then $X$ is $c_0$ or $\ell_p$ saturated for some $1 \leq p <+\infty$,
- if $(e_n)$ is shrinking unconditional, and $\sim^{perm}$ between normalized disjointly supported sequences in $X$, resp. in $X^*$, are classifiable, then $(e_n)$ is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ or $\ell_p$,
- if $(e_n)$ is unconditional, then either $X$ is isomorphic to $l_2$, or $X$ contains $2^ω$ subspaces or $2^ω$ quotients which are spanned by pairwise non permutatively equivalent normalized unconditional bases.
We prove that if the squares of two unconditional bases are equivalent up to a permutation, then the bases themselves are permutatively equivalent. This settles a twenty year-old question raised by Casazza and Kalton in [Uniqueness of unconditional bases in Banach spaces, Israel J. Math. 103 (1998), 141--175]. Solving this problem provides a new paradigm to study the uniqueness of unconditional basis in the general framework of quasi-Banach spaces. Multiple examples are given to illustrate how to put in practice this theoretical scheme. Among the main applications of this principle we obtain t…
In this paper, we give simplified and equivalent characterizations of Banach limit functional, which is the minimum requirement to characterize strong almost convergence. With this machinery, we show that Hajdukovic's quasi-almost convergence is equivalent to strong almost convergence.
Given a finite measure space $(Ω,Σ,μ)$, we show that any Banach space $X(μ)$ consisting of (equivalence classes of) real measurable functions defined on $Ω$ such that $f χ_A \in X(μ) $ and $ \|f χ_A \| \leq \|f\|, \, f \in X(μ), \ A \in Σ$, and having the subsequence property, is in fact an ideal of measurable functions and has an equivalent norm under which it is a Banach function space. As an application we characterize norms that are equivalent to a Banach function space norm.
We study Fourier convolution operators $W^0(a)$ with symbols equivalent to zero at infinity on a separable Banach function space $X(\mathbb{R})$ such that the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is bounded on $X(\mathbb{R})$ and on its associate space $X'(\mathbb{R})$. We show that the limit operators of $W^0(a)$ are all equal to zero.
In the paper is considered two problems on extension of operators whose range space for the first problem (or domain space for the second one) belongs to the fixed class of finite equivalence, which is generated by a given Banach space $X$. Both problems are considered in two variants: isometric and isomorphic ones. Received a full solution of the first problem and the solution, close to final one for the second problem.

In recent years the coincidence of the operator relations equivalence after extension and Schur coupling was settled for the Hilbert space case, by showing that equivalence after extension implies equivalence after one-sided extension. In this paper we investigate consequences of equivalence after extension for compact Banach space operators. We show that generating the same operator ideal is necessary but not sufficient for two compact operators to be equivalent after extension. In analogy with the necessary and sufficient conditions on the singular values for compact Hilbert space operators …
Let $E$ be a $(\mathrm{IV})$-polyhedral Banach space. We show that, for each $ε>0$, $E$ admits an $ε$-equivalent $\mathrm{(V)}$-polyhedral norm such that the corresponding closed unit ball is the closed convex hull of its extreme points. In particular, we obtain that every separable isomorphically polyhedral Banach space, for each $ε>0$, admits an $ε$-equivalent $(\mathrm{V})$-polyhedral norm such that the corresponding closed unit ball is the closed convex hull of its extreme points.
We present a construction that enables one to find Banach spaces $X$ whose sets $NA(X)$ of norm attaining functionals do not contain two-dimensional subspaces and such that, consequently, $X$ does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than one, extending the results recently provided by Read and Rmoutil. Roughly speaking, we construct an equivalent renorming with the requested properties for every Banach space $X$ where the set $NA(X)$ for the original norm is not "too large". The construction can be applied to every Banach space containing $c_0$ and having a countable…
We show that finite dimensional Banach spaces fail to be uniformly non locally almost square. Moreover, we construct an equivalent almost square bidual norm on $\ell_\infty.$ As a consequence we get that every dual Banach space containing $c_0$ has an equivalent almost square dual norm. Finally we characterize separable real almost square spaces in terms of their position in their fourth duals.
We prove two theorems about differentiable functions on the Banach space C(K), where K is compact. (i) If C(K) admits a non-trivial function of class C^m and of bounded support, then all continuous real-valued functions on C(K) may be uniformly approximated by functions of class C^m. (ii) If C(K) admits an equivalent norm with locally uniformly convex dual norm, then C(K) admits an equivalent norm which is of class C^infty (except at 0).
In this article we study bounded operators $T$ on Banach space $X$ which satisfy the discrete Gomilko Shi-Feng condition $$\int_{0}^{2π}|\langle R(re^{it},T)^{2}x,x^*\rangle |dt \leq \frac{C}{(r^2-1)}\norme{x}\norme{x^*},\quad r>1, x\in X, x^* \in X^*. $$ We show that it is equivalent to a certain derivative bounded functional calculus and also to a bounded functional calculus relative to Besov space. Also on Hilbert space discrete Gomilko Shi-Feng condition is equivalent to power-boundedness. Finally we discuss the last equivalence on general Banach space involving the concept of $γ$-boundedn…
We extend to the non separable setting many characterizations of the Banach spaces admitting an equivalent norm with the property $(β)$ of Rolewicz. These characterizations involve in particular the Szlenk index and asymptotically uniformly smooth or convex norms. This allows to extend easily to the non separable case some recent results from the non linear geometry of Banach spaces.
The hierarchy of the block bases of transfinite normalized averages of a normalized Schauder basic sequence is introduced and a criterion is given for a normalized weakly null sequence in C(K), the Banach space of scalar valued functions continuous on the compact metric space K, to admit a block basis of normalized averages equivalent to the unit vector basis of c_0, the Banach space of null scalar sequences. As an application of this criterion, it is shown that every normalized weakly null sequence in C(K), for countable K, admits a block basis of normalized averages equivalent to the unit ve…
We introduce the notions of approximate cohomology and approximate homotopy in Banach algebras and we study the relation between them. We show that the approximate homotopically equivalent cochain complexes give the same approximate cohomologies. As an special case, approximate Hochschild cohomology is introduced and studied.
We introduce the class of Orlicz-Pettis polynomials between Banach spaces, defined by their action on weakly unconditionally Cauchy series. We give a number of equivalent definitions, examples and counterexamples which highlight the differences between these polynomials and the corresponding linear operators.
We give an intrinsic characterisation of the separable reflexive Banach spaces that embed into separable reflexive spaces with an unconditional basis all of whose normalised block sequences with the same growth rate are equivalent. This uses methods of E. Odell and T. Schlumprecht.
We study almost square Banach spaces under a topological point of view. Indeed, we prove that the class of Banach spaces which admits an equivalent norm to be ASQ is that of those Banach spaces which contain an isomorphic copy of $c_0$. We also prove that the symmetric projective tensor products of an almost square Banach space have the strong diameter two property
It is shown that a separable Banach space $X$ can be given an equivalent norm $|\!|\!|\cdot |\!|\!|$ with the following properties:\quad If $(x_n)\subseteq X$ is relatively weakly compact and $\lim_{m\to\infty} \lim_{n\to\infty}\break |\!|\!| x_m + x_n |\!|\!| = 2\lim_{m\to\infty} |\!|\!| x_m|\!|\!|$ then $(x_n)$ converges in norm. This yields a characterization of reflexivity once proposed by V.D.~Milman. In addition it is shown that some spreading model of a sequence in $(X, |\!|\!|\cdot |\!|\!|)$ is 1-equivalent to the unit vector basis of $\ell_1$ (respectively, $c_0$) implies that $X$ con…
Classes of Banach spaces that are finitely, strongly finitely or elementary equivalent are introduced. On sets of these classes topologies are defined in such a way that sets of defined classes become compact totally disconnected topological spaces. Results are used in the problem of synthesis of Banach spaces, and to describe omittable spaces that are defined below.
the main goal of this paper is to prove that any Banach space X, that every dual ball in X** is weak* -separable, or every weak* -closed convex subset in X** is weak* -separable, or every norm-closed convex set in X* is constructible, admits an equivalent Frechet differentiable norm.
We develop tools to produce equivalent norms with specific local geometry around infinitely many points in the sphere of a Banach space via an inductive procedure. We combine this process with smoothness results and techniques to solve two open problems posed in the recently published monograph [GMZ22] by A. J. Guirao, V. Montesinos and V. Zizler. Specifically, on the one hand we construct in every separable Banach space admitting a $C^k$-smooth norm an equivalent norm which is $C^k$-smooth but fails to be uniformly Gâteaux in any direction; and on the other hand we produce in $c_0(Γ)$ for any…
For $1<p\le \infty$, we show the existence of a Banach space which is both injectively and surjectively universal for the class of all separable Banach spaces with an equivalent $p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth norm. We prove that this class is analytic complete in the class of separable Banach spaces. These results extend previous works by Kalton, Werner and Kurka in the case $p=\infty$.
Associated to a nonzero homomorphism $φ$ of a Banach algebra $A$, we regard special functionals, say $m_φ$, on certain subspaces of $A^\ast$ which provide equivalent statements to the existence of a bounded right approximate identity in the corresponding maximal ideal in $A$. For instance, applying a fixed point theorem yields an equivalent statement to the existence of a $m_φ$ on $A^\ast$; and, in addition we expatiate the case that if a functional $m_φ$ is unique, then $m_φ$ belongs to the topological center of the bidual algebra $A^{\ast\ast}$. An example of a function algebra, surprisingly…
We prove that every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ can be equivalently renormed so that its bidual space is octahedral, which answers, in the separable case, a question by Godefroy in 1989. As a direct consequence, we obtain that every dual Banach space, with a separable predual, failing to be strongly regular (that is, without convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small for some closed, convex and bounded subset) can be equivalently renormed with a dual norm to satisfy the strong diameter two property (that is, such that every convex combination of slices in its …
A basic result in semigroup theory states that every $C_0$-semigroup is quasi-contractive with respect to some appropriately chosen equivalent norm. This paper contains a counterpart of this well-known fact. Namely, by examining the convergence of the Trotter-type formula $(e^{\frac{t}{n}A}P)^n$ (where $P$ denotes a bounded projection), we prove that whenever the generator $A$ is unbounded it is possible to introduce an equivalent norm on the space with respect to which the semigroup is {\it{not}} quasi-contractive.
Let $A$ be a dual Banach algebra with predual $A_\ast$ and consider the following assertions: (A) $A$ is Connes-amenable; (B) $A$ has a normal, virtual diagonal; (C) $A_\ast$ is an injective $A$-bimodule. For general $A$, all that is known is that (B) implies (A) whereas, for von Neumann algebras, (A), (B), and (C) are equivalent. We show that (C) always implies (B) whereas the converse is false for $A = M(G)$ where $G$ is an infinite, locally compact group. Furthermore, we present partial solutions towards a characterization of (A) and (B) for $B(G)$ in terms of $G$: For amenable, discrete $G…
The principal aim of this paper is to study the Banach-Saks property when the speed of convergence of a Cesaro mean sequence can be chosen independtly from the choice of the initial sequence. We establish links between the uniform Banach-Saks property, properties $(A_\infty)$ of Partington and the $p$-Banach-Saks property. We also prove that the $p$-Banach-Saks property and the strong $p$-Banach-Saks property are equivalent. Many examples are given and we apply the results to the symmetric Kottman constant.
The study of the Banach-Saks property in Banach spaces has a long and illustrious history. Of late, motivated by applications in financial mathematics, interest has arisen in the Banach-Saks type properties with respect to order convergence. This paper presents a study of order Banach-Saks properties in Banach function spaces, and in particular in rearrangement invariant spaces. Among the results obtained, we provide some sufficient conditions for the (weak) order Banach-Saks property. We also characterize the (weak) order Banach-Saks property in Orlicz spaces. It is also shown that the (weak)…
Relatively recently it was proved that if $Γ$ is an arbitrary set, then any equivalent norm on $c_0(Γ)$ can be approximated uniformly on bounded sets by polyhedral norms and $C^\infty$ smooth norms, with arbitrary precision. We extend this result to more classes of spaces having uncountable symmetric bases, such as preduals of the `discrete' Lorentz spaces $d(w,1,Γ)$, and certain symmetric Nakano spaces and Orlicz spaces. We also show that, given an arbitrary ordinal number $α$, there exists a scattered compact space $K$ having Cantor-Bendixson height at least $α$, such that every equivalent n…
It is well known that in the calculus of variations and in optimization there exist many formulations of the fundamental propositions on the attainment of the infima of sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous coercive functions on reflexive Banach spaces. By either some constructive skills or the regularization skill by inf--convolutions we show in this paper that all these formulations together with their important variants are equivalent to each other and equivalent to the reflexivity of the underlying space. Motivated by this research, we also give a characterization for a normed space to …
In 1989, G. Godefroy proved that a Banach space contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if it can be equivalently renormed to be octahedral. It is known that octahedral norms can be characterized by means of covering the unit sphere by a finite number of balls. This observation allows us to connect the theory of octahedral norms with ball-covering properties of Banach spaces introduced by L. Cheng in 2006. Following this idea, we extend G. Godefroy's result to higher cardinalities. We prove that, for an infinite cardinal $κ$, a Banach space $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_…
It is known that two Banach space operators that are Schur coupled are also equivalent after extension, or equivalently, matricially coupled. The converse implication, that operators which are equivalent after extension or matricially coupled are also Schur coupled, was only known for Fredholm Hilbert space operators and Fredholm Banach space operators with index 0. We prove that this implication also holds for Hilbert space operators with closed range, generalizing the result for Fredholm operators, and Banach space operators that can be approximated in operator norm by invertible operators. …
We show that norms on certain Banach spaces $X$ can be approximated uniformly, and with arbitrary precision, on bounded subsets of $X$ by $C^{\infty}$ smooth norms and polyhedral norms. In particular, we show that this holds for any equivalent norm on $c_0(Γ)$, where $Γ$ is an arbitrary set. We also give a necessary condition for the existence of a polyhedral norm on a weakly compactly generated Banach space, which extends a well-known result of Fonf.
In three previous papers, we discussed quasidense multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual, or, equivalently, quasidense subsets of the product of a Banach space and its dual. In this paper, we survey (without proofs) some of the main results about quasidensity, and give some simple limiting examples in Hilbert spaces, reflexive Banach spaces, and nonreflexive Banach spaces.
We prove that the class of Banach function lattices in which all relatively weakly compact sets are equi-integrable sets (i.e. spaces satisfying the Dunford-Pettis criterion) coincides with the class of 1-disjointly homogeneous Banach lattices. A new examples of such spaces are provided. Furthermore, it is shown that Dunford-Pettis criterion is equivalent to de la Vallee Poussin criterion in all rearrangement invariant spaces on the interval. Finally, the results are applied to characterize weakly compact pointwise multipliers between Banach function lattices.
A Banach space X is superreflexive if each Banach space Y that is finitely representable in X is reflexive. Superreflexivity is known to be equivalent to J-convexity and to the non-existence of uniformly bounded factorizations of the summation operators S_n through X. We give a quantitative formulation of this equivalence. This can in particular be used to find a factorization of S_n through X, given a factorization of S_N through [L_2,X], where N is `large' compared to n.
Let (e_i) be a dictionary for a separable Banach space X. We consider the problem of approximation by linear combinations of dictionary elements with quantized coefficients drawn usually from a `finite alphabet'. We investigate several approximation properties of this type and connect them to the Banach space geometry of X. The existence of a total minimal system with one of these properties, namely the coefficient quantization property, is shown to be equivalent to X containing c_0.
In this note we provide examples that show that a common notion of causality for linear operators on Banach spaces does not carry over to the closure of the respective operators. We provide an alternative definition for causality, which is equivalent to the usual definition for closed linear operators but does carry over to the closure.
We show that every Banach space containing isomorphic copies of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball has diameter 2 and, however, its unit ball still contains convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small, which improves in a optimal way the known results about the size of this kind of subsets in Banach spaces.
We obtain Lebesgue-type inequalities for the greedy algorithm for arbitrary complete seminormalized biorthogonal systems in Banach spaces. The bounds are given only in terms of the upper democracy functions of the basis and its dual. We also show that these estimates are equivalent to embeddings between the given Banach space and certain discrete weighted Lorentz spaces. Finally, the asymptotic optimality of these inequalities is illustrated in various examples of non necessarily quasi-greedy bases.
The concept of uniform convexity of a Banach space was generalized to linear operators between Banach spaces and studied by Beauzamy [1976]. Under this generalization, a Banach space X is uniformly convex if and only if its identity map I_X is. Pisier showed that uniformly convex Banach spaces have martingale type p for some p>1. We show that this fact is in general not true for linear operators. To remedy the situation, we introduce the new concept of martingale subtype and show, that it is equivalent, also in the operator case, to the existence of an equivalent uniformly convex norm on X. In…
We study the unknown differences between the size of slices and relatively weakly open subsets of the unit ball in Banach spaces. We show that every Banach space containing isomorphic copies of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that every slice of its unit ball has diameter 2 and satisfying that its unit ball contains nonempty relatively weakly open subsets with diameter arbitrarily small, which answers an open problem and stresses the differences of diameter between slices and relatively weakly open subsets of the unit ball in Banach spaces.
A well-known result of R. Pol states that a Banach space $X$ has property ($\mathcal{C}$) of Corson if and only if every point in the weak*-closure of any convex set $C \subseteq B_{X^*}$ is actually in the weak*-closure of a countable subset of $C$. Nevertheless, it is an open problem whether this is in turn equivalent to the countable tightness of $B_{X^*}$ with respect to the weak*-topology. Frankiewicz, Plebanek and Ryll-Nardzewski provided an affirmative answer under $\mathrm{MA}+\neg \mathrm{CH}$ for the class of $\mathcal{C}(K)$-spaces. In this article we provide a partial extension of …
In this work, we obtain some necessary and some sufficient conditions for a space to be nicely smooth, and show that they are equivalent for separable or Asplund spaces. We obtain a sufficient condition for the Ball Generated Property (BGP), and conclude that Property $(II)$ implies the BGP, which, in turn, implies the space is nicely smooth. We show that the class of nicely smooth spaces is stable under $c_o$ and $\ell_p$ sums and also under finite $\ell_1$ sums; that being nicely smooth is not a three space property; and that the Bochner $L_p$ spaces are nicely smooth if and only if $X$ is b…
W.B. Johnson has constructed a series of Banach spaces non isomorphic to the Hilbert one that have the hereditarily approximation property (shortly hereditarily AP): all their subspaces also have the AP. All these examples were ''sufficiently'' non-symmetric and this fact allows Johnson to ask: whether there exists any Banach space $X$ with symmetric (or, at least, subsymmetric) basis, distinct from the Hilbert space such that each its subspace has the AP? In this paper is shown that there is a Banach space with a subsymmetric basis (non-equivalent to any symmetric one), which enjoys the hered…
We prove that in every separable Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis and a $C^k$-smooth norm it is possible to approximate, uniformly on bounded sets, every equivalent norm with a $C^k$-smooth one in a way that the approximation is improving as fast as we wish on the elements depending only on the tail of the Schauder basis. Our result solves a problem from the recent monograph of Guirao, Montesinos and Zizler.
Using the game approach to fragmentability, we give new and simpler proofs of the following known results: (a) If the Banach space admits an equivalent Kadec norm, then its weak topology is fragmented by a metric which is stronger than the norm topology. (b) If the Banach space admits an equivalent rotund norm, then its weak topology is fragmented by a metric. (c) If the Banach space is weakly locally uniformly rotund, then its weak topology is fragmented by a metric which is stronger than the norm topology.
We study the relation between octahedral norms, Daugavet property and the size of convex combinations of slices in Banach spaces. We prove that the norm of an arbitrary Banach space is octahedral if, and only if, every convex combination of $w^*$-slices in the dual unit ball has diameter 2, which answer an open question. As a consequence we get that the Banach spaces with the Daugavet property and its dual spaces have octahedral norms. Also, we show that for every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ and for every $\varepsilon >0$ there is an equivalent norm so that every convex combinat…
A group G is representable in a Banach space X if G is isomorphic to the group of isometries on X in some equivalent norm. We prove that a countable group G is representable in a separable real Banach space X in several general cases, including when $G=\{-1,1\} \times H$, H finite and $\dim X \geq |H|$, or when G contains a normal subgroup with two elements and X is of the form c_0(Y) or $\ell_p(Y)$, $1 \leq p <+\infty$. This is a consequence of a result inspired by methods of S. Bellenot and stating that under rather general conditions on a separable real Banach space X and a countable bounde…
We prove that a Banach space of continuous functions $C(K)$ has a renorming that is uniformly rotund in every direction (URED) if and only if the compact space $K$ supports a strictly positive measure
