W.B. Johnson has constructed a series of Banach spaces non isomorphic to the Hilbert one that have the hereditarily approximation property (shortly hereditarily AP): all their subspaces also have the AP. All these examples were ''sufficiently'' non-symmetric and this fact allows Johnson to ask: whether there exists any Banach space $X$ with symmetric (or, at least, subsymmetric) basis, distinct from the Hilbert space such that each its subspace has the AP? In this paper is shown that there is a Banach space with a subsymmetric basis (non-equivalent to any symmetric one), which enjoys the hereditarily AP.
Our aim in this article is to contribute to the study of the structure of subsymmetric basic sequences in Banach spaces (even, more generally, in quasi-Banach spaces). For that we introduce the notion of positioning and develop new tools which lead to a dichotomy theorem that holds for general spaces with subsymmetric bases. As an illustration of how to use this dichotomy theorem we obtain the classification of all subsymmetric sequences in certain types of spaces. We explore the diversity of subsymmetric basic sequences in spaces with a subsymmetric basis. We prove that the subsymmetrization $Su(T^*)$ of Tsirelson's original Banach space provides the first known example of a space with a unique subsymmetric basic sequence that is additionally non-symmetric. Contrastingly, we provide a criterion for a space with a subsymmetric basis to contain a continuum of nonequivalent subsymmetric basic sequences and apply it to $Su(T^*)^*$. Let $X^*$ denote a Banach space with a subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder basis satisfying condition~\eqref{eq:condition-c}. We show that for any operator $T : X^*\to X^*$, either $T(X^*)$ or $(I-T)(X^*)$ contains a subspace that is isomorphic to $X^*$ and complemented in $X^*$. We study density requirements on a given Banach space that guarantee the existence of subsymmetric basic sequences by extending Tsirelson's well-known space to larger index sets. We prove that for every cardinal $κ$ smaller than the first Mahlo cardinal there is a reflexive Banach space of density $κ$ without subsymmetric basic sequences. As for Tsirelson's space, our construction is based on the existence of a rich collection of homogeneous families on large index sets for which one can estimate the complexity on any given infinite set. A new method of defining hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces is presented. This method provides a unified approach for constructing reflexive HI spaces and also HI spaces with no reflexive subspace. All the spaces presented here satisfy the property that the composition of any two strictly singular operators is a compact one. This yields the first known example of a Banach space with no reflexive subspace such that every operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace.
We give new and simple proofs of some classical properties of hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, including the result by W. T. Gowers and B. Maurey that a hereditarily indecomposable Banach space cannot be isomorphic to a proper subspace of itself. These proofs do not make use of spectral theory and therefore, they work in real spaces as well as in complex spaces. We use our method to prove some new results. There exists a real hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $X$ such that the quotient space $L(X)/S(X)$ by strictly singular operators is isomorphic to the complex field (resp. to the quaternionic division algebra). Up to isomorphism, the example with complex quotient space has exactly two complex structures, which are conjugate, totally incomparable, and both hereditarily indecomposable. We give a complete description of the structure of the connected components of the general linear group of a real hereditarily indecomposable Banach space, depending on the existence of complex structures on the space itself and on its hyperplanes. A side result is the fact that complex structures cannot exist simultaneously on such a space and on its hyperplanes.

In the present work we provide a variety of examples of HI Banach spaces containing no reflexive subspace and we study the structure of their duals as well as the spaces of their linear bounded operators. Our approach is based on saturated extensions of ground sets and the method of attractors.
We examine a variant of a Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}$ defined by Argyros, Beanland, and the second named author that has the property that it admits precisely two spreading models in every infinite dimensional subspace. In this note we examine the connection between the stable rank one and Dedekind-finite property of the algebra of operators on a Banach space $X$. We show that for the indecomposable but not hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $X_{\infty}$ constructed by Tarbard (Ph.D. Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013), the algebra of operators $B(X_{\infty})$ is Dedekind-finite but does not have stable rank one. The aim of this paper is to introduce and investigate a new class of separable Banach spaces modeled after an example of Garling from 1968. For each $1\leqslant p<\infty$ and each nonincreasing weight $\textbf{w}\in c_0\setminus\ell_1$ we exhibit an $\ell_p$-saturated, complementably homogeneous, and uniformly subprojective Banach space $g(\textbf{w},p)$. We also show that $g(\textbf{w},p)$ admits a unique subsymmetric basis despite the fact that for a wide class of weights it does not admit a symmetric basis. Let $\mathbb{Y}$ be either an Orlicz sequence space or a Marcinkiewicz sequence space. We take advantage of the recent advances in the theory of factorization of the identity carried on in [R. Lechner, Subsymmetric weak* Schauder bases and factorization of the identity, arXiv:1804.01372 [math.FA]] to provide conditions on $\mathbb{Y}$ that ensure that, for any $1\le p\le\infty$, the infinite direct sum of $\mathbb{Y}$ in the sense of $\ell_p$ is a primary Banach space, enlarging this way the list of Banach spaces that are known to be primary.
It is shown that every separable reflexive Banach space is a quotient of a reflexive Hereditarily Indecomposable space, which yields that every separable reflexive Banach is isomorphic to a subspace of a reflexive Indecomposable space. We strengthen the property $Δ$ of a function $f:[ω_2]^2\rightarrow [ω_2]^{\leq ω}$ considered by Baumgartner and Shelah. This allows us to consider new types of amalgamations in the forcing used by Rabus, Juhász and Soukup to construct thin-very tall compact scattered spaces. We consistently obtain spaces $K$ as above where $K^n$ is hereditarily separable for each $n\in\N$. In this paper, we study the descriptive complexity of some inevitable classes of Banach spaces. Precisely, as shown in [Go], every Banach space either contains a hereditarily indecomposable subspace or an unconditional basis, and, as shown in [FR], every Banach space either contains a minimal subspace or a continuously tight subspace. In these notes, we study the complexity of those inevitable classes as well as the complexity of containing a subspace in any of those classes.

We study an ordinal rank on the class of Banach spaces with bases that quantifies the distortion of the norm of a given Banach space. The rank $AD(\cdot)$, introduced by P. Dodos, uses the transfinite Schreier familes and has the property that $AD(X) < ω_1$ if and only if $X$ is arbitrarily distortable. We prove several properties of this rank as well as some new results concerning higher order $\ell_1$ spreading models. We also compute this rank for for several Banach spaces. By generalizing a construction of Garling, for each $1\leqslant p<\infty$ and each normalized, nonincreasing sequence of positive numbers $w\in c_0\setminus\ell_1$ we exhibit an $\ell_p$-saturated, complementably homogeneous Banach space $g(w,p)$ related to the Lorentz sequence space $d(w,p)$. Using methods originally developed for studying $d(w,p)$, we show that $g(w,p)$ admits a unique (up to equivalence) subsymmetric basis, although when $w=(n^{-θ})_{n=1}^\infty$ for some $0<θ<1$, it does not admit a symmetric basis. We construct a Hereditarily Indecomposable Banach space $\eqs_d$ with a Schauder basis \seq{e}{n} on which there exist strictly singular non-compact diagonal operators. Moreover, the space $\mc{L}_{\diag}(\eqs_d)$ of diagonal operators with respect to the basis \seq{e}{n} contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_{\infty}(\N)$.
We show that when $C(K)$ does not have few operator -- in the sense of Koszmider [P. Koszmider, Banach spaces of continuous functions with few operators. Math. Ann. 300 (2004), no. 1, 151 - 183.] -- the sets of operators which are not weak multipliers is spaceable. Hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces may have density at most continuum (Plichko-Yost, Argyros-Tolias). In this paper we show that this cannot be proved for indecomposable Banach spaces. We provide the first example of an indecomposable Banach space of density two to continuum. The space exists consistently, is of the form C(K) and it has few operators in the sense that any bounded linear operator T on C(K) satisfies T(f)=gf+S(f) for every f in C(K), where g is in C(K) and S is weakly compact (strictly singular).
The paper deals with continuous homomorphisms $S \ni s \mapsto T_s \in L(E)$ of amenable semigroups $S$ into the algebra $L(E)$ of all bounded linear operators on a Banach space $E$. For a closed linear subspace $F$ of $E$, sufficient conditions are given under which there exists a projection $P \in L(E)$ onto $F$ that commutes with all $T_s$. A bounded linear operator $T$ on a Banach space $X$ is called frequently hypercyclic if there exists $x\in X$ such that the lower density of the set $\{n\in\N:T^nx\in U\}$ is positive for any non-empty open subset $U$ of $X$. Bayart and Grivaux have raised a question whether there is a frequently hypercyclic operator on any separable infinite dimensional Banach space. We prove that the spectrum of a frequently hypercyclic operator has no isolated points. Recently, W. Cuellar Carrera, N. de Rancourt, and V. Ferenczi introduced the notion of $d_2$-hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, i.e., non-Hilbertian spaces that do not contain the direct sum of any two non-Hilbertian subspaces. They posed the question of the existence of such spaces that are $\ell_2$-saturated. Motivated by this question, we define and study two variants $JT_{2,p}$ and $JT_G$ of the James Tree space $JT$. They are meant to be classical analogues of a future space that will affirmatively answer the aforementioned question.

To every Banach space V we associate a compact right topological affine semigroup E(V). We show that a separable Banach space V is Asplund if and only if E(V) is metrizable, and it is Rosenthal (i.e. it does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$) if and only if E(V) is a Rosenthal compactum. We study representations of compact right topological semigroups in E(V).
